Brecon

Brecon , archaically known as Brecknock, is a market town and community in Powys, Mid Wales, with a population of 7,901. Historically it was the county town of Brecknockshire; although its role as such was eclipsed with the formation of the County of Powys, it remains an important local centre. Brecon is the third largest town in Powys, after Newtown and Ystradgynlais. It lies north of the Brecon Beacons mountain range, but is just within the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Machynlleth

Machynlleth , sometimes referred to colloquially as Mach, is a market town and community in Powys, Wales and within the historic boundaries of Montgomeryshire . It is in the Dyfi Valley at the intersection of the A487 and the A489 roads. At the 2001 Census it had a population of 2,147. Machynlleth was the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament in 1404, and as such claims to be the "ancient capital of Wales". However, it has never held any official recognition as a capital. It applied for city status in 2000 and 2002, but was unsuccessful. It is twinned with Belleville, Michigan. Machynlleth hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1937 and 1981.

Montgomery

Montgomery is a town in the Welsh Marches, administratively in the Welsh county of Powys. It is the traditional county town of the historic county of Montgomeryshire, to which it gives its name. The town centre lies one mile from the English border. Its castle, Montgomery Castle, was started in 1223, and its parish church in 1227. Other locations in the town include The Old Bell Museum, the Offa's Dyke Path, the Robber's Grave and the town wall. The large Iron Age hill fort of Ffridd Faldwyn is sited to the NW of the town and to the W of Montgomery Castle. In the 2011 census, the community of Montgomery had a population of 1295.

Corris

Corris is a village and community in the south of Snowdonia in the Welsh county of Gwynedd. It lies in the historic county of Merionethshire/Sir Feirionnydd. Although the Snowdonia National Park covers much of the area around Corris, the village is not within the park. The name is possibly derived from the English word "quarries", and the extensive slate quarries that surround the village are its most prominent historical feature. However, The Place Names of Wales states : "We find the forms Corys and Corus in the Cambrian Register for 1795. Some think the place takes its name from a saint called Corus. It is also said that Cunedda Wedig had a son called Coras. Others think that the river which gives the place its name, was called Corus from its making round excavations in the angles of its banks." The name Corris is also shared with a small river in Denbighshire, a tributary of the Clywedog which in turn flows into the river Clwyd. It is extremely unlikely that the name Corris is a derivation from the English word 'quarry'. Both the Meirionydd and Denbigh Corris predate the rise of the slate industry. The population of Corris community was 723 at the 2011 Census.

Our Lady of Ransom and the Holy Souls Church

Llandrindod Wells is a town and community in Powys, within the historic boundaries of Radnorshire, Wales. It serves as the seat of Powys County Council and thus the administrative centre of Powys. It was developed as a spa town in the 19th century, with a boom in the late 20th century as a centre of local government. Before the 1860s the site of the town was common land in Llanfihangel Cefn-llys parish. Llandrindod Wells is the fifth largest town in Powys. It is locally nicknamed "Llandod" or "Dod".

Welshpool

Welshpool is a town in Wales, historically in the county of Montgomeryshire, but currently administered as part of the unitary authority of Powys. The town is 4 miles from the Wales-England border and low-lying on the River Severn; its Welsh language name Y Trallwng literally means "the marshy or sinking land". Welshpool is the fourth largest town in Powys. In English it was initially known as Pool but its name was changed to Welshpool in 1835 to distinguish it from the English town of Poole. It has a population of 6,664 (United Kingdom Census 2011), contains much Georgian architecture and is just north of Powis Castle.

Newtown

Newtown is the largest town in the county of Powys, Wales. It had a population of 12,783 in 2001, falling to 11,357 at the 2011 census. Lying on the River Severn, within the historic boundaries of Montgomeryshire, the town is best known as the birthplace of Robert Owen in 1771 His former house stood on what is now the site of the HSBC Bank. The Robert Owen Museum is across the road, occupying the ground floor of the council offices. Newtown is also the home of Theatr Hafren and of Oriel Davies, a major public gallery, which displays national and international contemporary art and craft.

Knighton

Knighton is a small market town and community situated chiefly in Powys, Wales, within the historic county boundaries of Radnorshire. Lying on the River Teme, the town straddles the English-Welsh border; Knighton railway station, as well as a small part of the towns built-up area, is located in Shropshire, England. Knighton is the sixth largest town in Powys. The name Knighton derives from Old English meaning A settlement of knights or knights town. This was both an Anglo-Saxon and later a Norman fortified boundary, a place where knights protected the borderlands from Welsh invaders. Tref-y-clawdd, its Welsh name, is not a translation: it means town on the dyke and not Knighton. If you were to translate Knighton into Welsh it would be called Tref marchogion or Aheddiad o farchogionn.

Talgarth

Talgarth is a small market town and community in southern Powys, mid Wales, with a population of 1,645. Notable buildings in the town include its 14th-century parish church and 13th-century Pele Tower, located in the town centre, now home to the Tourist Information and Resource Centre. According to traditional accounts Talgarth was the capital of the early medieval Welsh Kingdom of Brycheiniog.

Llanidloes

Llanidloes is a town along the A470 road and B4518 road in Powys, within the historic county boundaries of Montgomeryshire , Wales. The population in 2011 was 2,929, of whom 15% could speak Welsh. It is the first town on the River Severn . The town's Member of Parliament is the Conservatives' Glyn Davies and its Assembly Member is Conservative Russell George .

Castle Caereinion

Castle Caereinion is a small village in Powys, Wales upon the River Banwy (also known as the River Einion), around 8 miles west of Welshpool. In 2011 the ward had a population of 509. Castle Caereinion railway station is on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. The village is named after an ancient castle. The castle was built in 1156 by Madog ap Maredudd. Madog's nephew Owain Cyfeiliog swore allegiance to the English, Owain Gwynedd took the castle from him and destroyed it in about 1167. It has been suggested that a mound in the churchyard of St Garmon's is the remains of the earthwork castle. This mound is known as Twmpath Garmon, so it could be a preaching mound (as in Llanfechain). The most recent view is that the mound does not appear motte-like and a survey in 2002 failed to find a surrounding ditch. The church of St Garmon was completely rebuilt in 1866 with additions in 1874. Its predecessor was 15th century. Some of the fittings from the earlier church survive, mostly from the 18th century. St Garmon’s was not an important ecclesiastical centre, being classed as a chapel in 1254. Tŷ Mawr, a Grade I timber framed house, is in Trefnant within the parish of Castle Caereinion.

Hay on Wye

Hay-on-Wye, often abbreviated to just "Hay", is a small market town and community in the traditional county and district of Brecknockshire in Wales, currently administered as part of the unitary authority of Powys. Often described as "the town of books", it is the National Book Town of Wales. The annual Hay Festival is a major literary festival. The settlements name is first referred to between 1135 and 1147 as "Haya"; in 1299 the name of "La Haye" is used. By the 16th century it was simply called "Hay", and the use of the river as a suffix is a later addition. In 1215, a Welsh name, "Gelli" was recorded, and "Gelli gandrell" in 1614; the two names may have been used concurrently in 1625. The English language name, "Hay", is derived from Old English "hæg", possibly meaning a "fenced area" and a noun used in late Saxon and Norman times for an enclosure in a forest. The Welsh word celli has a range of meanings including wooded areas of various extents.

Presteign

Presteigne (; Welsh: Llanandras (the church of St. Andrew)) is a town and community in Powys, Wales. It was the county town of the historic county of Radnorshire. Despite lying on a minor B road the town has, in common with several other towns close to the Wales-England border, assumed the motto, "Gateway to Wales". The town sits on the south bank of the River Lugg, which forms the England-Wales border as it passes the town — the border effectively wraps around three sides of the town (north, east and south). Nearby towns are Kington to the south and Knighton to the north, and surrounding villages include Norton and Stapleton. The town falls within the Diocese of Hereford. Presteigne is considered by Country Life magazine editor Clive Aslet to be one of Britain's top 10 small towns.

Offa's Dyke

Offas Dyke is a large linear earthwork that roughly follows the current border between England and Wales. The structure is named after Offa, the 8th century king of Mercia, who is traditionally believed to have ordered its construction. Although its precise original purpose is debated, it delineated the border between Anglian Mercia and the Welsh kingdom of Powys. The Dyke, which was up to 65 feet wide and 8 feet high, traversed low ground, hills and rivers. Today the earthwork is protected as a scheduled monument. Much of its route is followed by the Offas Dyke Path; a 176 mi long-distance footpath that runs between Liverpool Bay in the north and the Severn Estuary in the south. Although the Dyke is conventionally dated to the Early Middle Ages of Anglo-Saxon England, research in recent decades using techniques such as radioactive carbon dating has challenged the conventional historiography and theories about the earthwork.

Rhayader

Rhayader is a market town and community in Powys, Wales. It has a population of 2,088, and is the first town on the banks of the River Wye, 20 miles from its source on the Plynlimon range of the Cambrian Mountains. The town is one of the principal centres of population in the predominantly rural historic county of Radnorshire. It is situated roughly midway between North and south Wales on the A470, 13 miles north of Builth Wells and 30 miles east of Aberystwyth on the A44 two of Wales' most important trunk roads. The B4574 mountain road to Aberystwyth is described by the AA as one of the ten most scenic drives in the world.

Berriew

Berriew is a village in Powys, Wales, situated on the Montgomeryshire Canal and the afon Rhiw near the confluence with the River Severn at grid reference SJ185005 and is 79 miles from Cardiff and 151 miles from London.

Hen Domen

Hen Domen, Welsh, meaning "old mound", is the site of a medieval timber motte-and-bailey castle in Powys, Wales. It is the site of the original Montgomery Castle and was built by Roger de Montgomery in 1070. From 1105 the castle was the home of the de Boulers family and it is from Baldwin de Boulers that Montgomery gets its Welsh name, Trefaldwyn "The Town of Baldwin". When the castle was rebuilt in stone it was decided to rebuild it on a rocky promontory a mile to the south-east – the location of the current town of Montgomery, Powys. The Hen Domen site has been extensively excavated. There are permanent exhibitions relating to both the medieval Hen Domen and Norman Montgomery Castles and their archaeological excavations in The Old Bell Museum in Montgomery.

Maespoeth Junction

Maespoeth Junction is a railway location to the south of Corris in Gwynedd. It lies in the historic county of Merionethshire/Sir Feirionnydd, in the valley of the Afon Dulas. It is known principally as a railway junction on the historic Corris Railway, and is also the site of a small number of residential dwellings.

Llanfechain

Llanfechain is a small village in northern Powys, mid Wales, between Llanfyllin and Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain on the B4393 road. Historically it was part of Montgomeryshire. Afon Cain runs through the village. It has a population of about 500.

Pistyll y Llyn

Pistyll y Llyn is one of the tallest waterfalls in Wales and the United Kingdom. It is a horsetail style set of falls which are located in the Cambrian Mountains about 2.48 miles from Glaspwll in Powys, Wales. It is formed where the River Llyfnant falls from Llyn Penrhaeadr for approximately 160 metres into Cwm Rhaeadr in two waterfalls, and a series of cascades. The tallest waterfall is a single horsetail drop of 91 metres. This is sometimes mistakenly stated as 73 metres.

Brecon Cathedral

Brecon Cathedral, in the town of Brecon, is the cathedral of the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon in the Church in Wales and seat of the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon. Previously the church of Brecon Priory and then the Parish Church of St John the Evangelist, it became Brecon Cathedral following the disestablishment of the Church in Wales in 1920 and the creation of the diocese in 1923.

Pen y Gadair Fawr

Pen y Gadair Fawr is a subsidiary summit of Waun Fach and the second highest peak in the Black Mountains in south-eastern Wales. Pen y Gadair Fawr is a much more distinguished top than its parent. The summit is marked by a medium-sized cairn. Waun Fach is to the north, while its top Pen Twyn Mawr is to the south.

Rhos Dirion

Rhos Dirion is a top of Waun Fach in the Black Mountains in south-eastern Wales. It is the highest point on the Rhos Dirion Chwarel y Fan ridge. The summit is marked by a trig point and crowns an area of peat bog, heather and long grasses. Its northern face is precipitous.

Waun Fach

Waun Fach is the highest mountain in the Black Mountains in south-eastern Wales. It is one of the three Marilyns over 600m that make up the range, the others being Black Mountain and Mynydd Troed. To the north Rhos Fawr and the Radnor Forest can be seen. After Pen y Fan, it is the second highest mountain in mainland Britain south of Snowdonia. It is situated at the head of the Grwyne Fechan valley, above and to the west of the Grwyne Fawr reservoir . It has an undistinguished rounded summit . The nearby tops on the ridge, Pen Trumau and Pen y Gadair Fawr, although lower, are very much more recognisable.

Clywedog Reservoir

The Clywedog reservoir is a reservoir near Llanidloes, Wales. Completed in 1967, the reservoir was built near the B4518 road, Powys, to supply water to Birmingham and the English Midlands by river regulation and to mitigate flooding in the lower Severn by storing excess winter rainfall. The reservoir was formed by damming the Afon Clywedog, a tributary of the River Severn. Its concrete buttress dam is the tallest concrete dam in the UK, with a height of 72 metres and a length of 230 metres. When at capacity the reservoir contains approximately 50,000 megalitres of water. A second, much smaller embankment dam is located at Bwlch-y-gle to prevent overflow into the next valley. Construction of the dam commenced in 1963 after the passing of an Act of Parliament ordering its creation to help prevent flooding of the River Severn in winter and to maintain its water levels in the summer. Local opposition was strong against the construction of the reservoir as it would result in the flooding of much of the Clywedog valley and the drowning of 615 acres of agricultural land. On top of several disruptions and protests, during construction in 1966 a bomb was detonated within the construction site, setting work back by almost 2 months. The political extremist group Mudiad Amddiffyn Cymru was widely suspected of carrying out the bombing. The reservoir was opened in 1967 and till this day has been in continuous usage, generally filling with water over the winter months and gradually releasing it during the summer months. The reservoir is currently owned and operated by Severn Trent Water Limited with oversight and regulation by Natural Resources Wales. Clywedog Sailing Club operates on the lake, and Powys County Councils Staylittle Outdoor Centre delivers a range of adventure education both on the water and in the surrounding area. The dam operating plant runs self-sufficiently from a 500 kW hydro-electric turbine. The area around Clywedog dam is now a popular leisure destination offering scenic walks and wildlife watching. In a TV ad for the Land Rover Defender, a Defender 90 is seen winching up the face of the dam under its own power.

Cadair Berwyn

Cadair Berwyn or Cader Berwyn is a mountain summit in north east Wales. It is the highest point in the Berwyn range, and the highest significant summit in Wales outside the National Parks. Cadair Berwyn and Cyrniau Nod to the west are the two Marilyns that form the Berwyn range. The mountain lies on main ridge of the Berwyns which runs north-south. The eastern side of the ridge is characterised by steep drops and crags including Craig Berwyn north of the summit and Craig y Llyn to the south. Craig y Llyn forms the headwall of a cwm, and it is to this that the word cadair presumably refers. Further north along the ridge is Cadair Bronwen, whilst to south the ridge continues to Moel Sych . It is often reported that Moel Sych, 1 kilometre along the ridge, is of equal height, but Cadair Berwyn's spot height on the Ordnance Survey maps, where the trig point stands, is not the true summit. Cadair Berwyn's summit, 200 metres south of the trig point, is 3 metres taller than Moel Sych. This summit is listed as Cadair Berwyn New Top on the Nuttall list. However, the name given to it by its discoverer, Bernard Wright, was Craig Uchaf. In 1987 Bernard Wright, a rambler from Cheshire, was standing on Cadair Berwyn when he noticed that a nearby peak appeared to be higher. After first denying it, the cartographers at the Ordnance Survey finally admitted that Bernard had discovered a 'new mountain' at 830 metres above sea level. Bernard's name for this peak was Craig Uchaf the topographical name fitting in well with those that the Welsh have been giving their landscape for centuries. Near the summit is a Bronze Age cairn suggesting that over two thousand years ago people had recognised the true top. Several other summits in the area are listed as Hewitts or Nuttalls, including Foel Wen and Mynydd Tarw ([ˈmɐnɨð ˈtæɾu], bull mountain). The summit lies on the border between Powys and Denbighshire, and is the highest point in Denbighshire. The northern end Craig Berwyn is the highest point in Wrexham county borough. It stands between Snowdon and the Wrekin and blocks their line-of-sight. There is a standing stone in the area, located near the summit between Cadair Berwyn and Tomle. This was re-erected in June 2008 by High Sports. The standing stone can be found at SJ080337. Below the mountain is a small lake, Llyn Lluncaws. It is the location, as well as Cadair Bronwen, of an alleged UFO landing in 1974, known as the Berwyn Mountain UFO incident.

Cadair Berwyn North Top or Cadair Berwyn is a top of Cadair Berwyn in north east Wales. It is jointly the second highest summit in the Berwyn range along with Moel Sych. The summit was often considered to be the highest summit in the Berwyns until the OS discovered a new top in between it and Moel Sych, which was 3m higher at 830m. This top, now known as Cadair Berwyn, is listed as Cadair Berwyn New Top on the Nuttall list. The summit has a trig point. To the north-east is Cadair Bronwen, to the south-east is Tomle, Foel Wen and Mynydd Tarw.

Drygarn Fawr

Drygarn Fawr is a mountain in the county of Powys, Wales. It is one of the highest summits in Mid Wales standing at 645 metres above sea level. Rising above the remote moorland plateau of the Cambrian Mountains, the summit is topped by two distinctive, large cairns. The mountain has a gentle, grassy, conical shape with a few rocks near the summit. Nearby are the summits of Gorllwyn and Y Gamriw, both over 600m. There are two paths to the summit which can offer impressive views. From Llannerch Yrfa, a bridleway winds up through forests in the Nant y Fedw valley before skirting the southern edge of the mountain. An alternative route may be taken starting from Rhiwnant on the edge of the Caban Coch reservoir, one of the Elan Valley Reservoirs, and following the Nant Paradwys before turning off west towards the summit cairn. Both routes pass across wild moorland and peat bogs and the path may become difficult to follow and impassable, particularly after heavy rain. The views to the north include Pen y Garn and Plynlimon, to the east Rhos Fawr and Gorllwyn and the Brecon Beacons to the south.

Moel Sych

Moel Sych is a subsidiary summit of Cadair Berwyn in north east Wales. It is jointly the second highest summit in the Berwyn range along with Cadair Berwyn North Top. The summit was often considered to be the highest summit in the Berwyns until Cadair Berwyn North Top, then known as Cadair Berwyn was found to be of the same height. Later on the OS discovered a new top in between the two, which was 3m higher at 830m. This top, now known as Cadair Berwyn, is listed as Cadair Berwyn New Top on the Nuttall list. The summit has a cairn, and overlooks Llyn Lluncaws in the southern Cwm.
