Shkoder

Shkodër , also called Skadar, is a city and municipality in northwestern Albania and the seat of the county with the same name. It is one of the oldest and most historic places in Albania, as well as an important cultural and economic centre. During many different epochs it has retained its status as a major city in the Western Balkans, due to its geostrategic positioning close to the Adriatic and the Italian ports, but also with land-routes to other important cities and towns in neighbouring regions. The present municipality, which now extends from the Albanian Alps to the Adriatic Sea, was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Ana e Malit, Bërdicë, Dajç, Guri i Zi, Postribë, Pult, Rrethinat, Shalë, Shkodër, Shosh and Velipojë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the city Shkodër. The total population is 135,612 , in a total area of 872.71 km2. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 77,075. Its importance is heightened by the Lake of Skadar to the west of the city—the largest in the Western Balkans—that straddles Albania and neighbouring Montenegro. The population of Shkodër municipality at the 2011 census was 77,075, while Shkodër County had a population of 215,347.

Shalë

Shalë is a former municipality in the Shkodër County, northwestern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Shkodër. The population at the 2011 census was 1,804. Its name comes from the Shala tribe which lives in the area. The municipal unit covers the upper course of the river Shalë, and part of the Prokletije mountains. There are eleven small mountain villages in the municipality: Breg-Lumi, Abat, Nicaj-Shalë, Lekaj, Vuksanaj, Pecaj, Theth, Ndërhysaj, Gimaj, Nen-Mavriq, Mekshaj, and Lotaj.

Postribë

Postribë is a former municipality in the Shkodër County, northwestern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became a subdivision of the municipality Shkodër. The population at the 2011 census was 7,069. It includes the village of Urë e Shtrenjtë. Shkodër Cathedral

Shkodër Cathedral, also known as St Stephens Catholic Cathedral or Kisha e Madhe is a cathedral in the city of Shkodër in northwestern Albania. The Roman Catholic cathedral is dedicated to Saint Stephen. During the Siege of Scutari the cathedral was damaged by the Montenegrin army, particularly the south east side, causing fire in the bell tower. The Cathedral was closed in 1967 and reopened in 1990.

Prokletije

Prokletije is a mountain range on the western Balkan peninsula, extending from northern Albania to Kosovo and eastern Montenegro. Its peak in Albania, Maja Jezercë at 2,694 m, is the highest point of the Dinaric Alps, and the 7th highest peak in Albania. Both the highest peak in Montenegro, Zla Kolata at 2,534 m and the highest in Kosovo, Đeravica at 2,656 m, are located here. The highest peak in Albania, however, is Mount Korab, part of the Korab range, at 2,764 m high and located in the east of the country on the border with the Republic of Macedonia . The southernmost glaciers in Europe were recently discovered in the Albanian part of the range. The regional economy is based mainly on agriculture, immigrant remittances and tourism.

Great Lake of Buni Jezerce

Big lake of Buni Jezercë is one of the largest lakes in the Albanian Alps found in the north of Albania. Big Lake is on an altitude of 1,792 m above sea level and is the largest of the 6 lakes found in the Buni Jezercë near the Montenegrian border. Many high peaks surround the lake, including Maja e Jezercës with a height of 2,694 m . This large mountain lake has an estimated maximum length of 380 m and a maximum width of 200 m . The area of the lake is almost five hectares.

Pukë

Pukë is a town and municipality in northern Albania. It was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Gjegjan, Pukë, Qelëz, Qerret and Rrapë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the town Pukë. The total population is 11,069 , in a total area of 505.53 km2. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 3,607. The local football club is called KS Tërbuni Pukë. At 838 metres above sea level, the town is one of the highest in elevation in Albania and a well known ski area. It is 150 km from Albania's capital, Tirana.

Maja Harapit

Maja Harapit is a mountain in the Prokletije range in the north of Albania. The mountain is 2,217 metres high, with its impressive 800 metres high south wall' the northwestern edge of a large basin, where it dominates as a prominent rock formation, the conclusion of the Shala Valley and is one of the landmarks of Theth Valley. The mountain is on the edge of the National Parks Theth. The mountain is located near the mountain pass of Qafa e Pejës (520 metres (1,710 ft)) north of Theth between the mountains of the Bjeshkët e Nemuna in the West completed by the Maja Radohimës (2,570 metres (8,430 ft)) and the Maja Jezercë massif in the east. While the steep south wall of the Shala Valley which is part of the mountain is actually based on a broad saddle between the two great massifs, the height of 2,000 metres steeply to a rocky point jutting which it juts from. The tip and the surrounding saddle is made of rugged rock, of sinkholes and caves penetrating karst formations. Albania's longest horizontal cave is located beneath the south wall. Bulgarian researchers have explored its length at 2,585 metres (8,481 ft). The depth of the cave is 346 metres (1,135 ft). Within the cave 15 species have been discovered. The south wall is considered the highest rock face of the Balkan peninsula and in the summer of 2010 was a tourist hotspot for the first time by a majority of tourists coming from Germany, especially big wall climbers throughout Europe. The name Harapi from Albanian to English can be translated as dark or Arabs.

Dinaric Alps

The Dinaric Alps or Dinarides is a mountain chain which spans areas of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. They extend for 645 kilometres along the coast of the Adriatic Sea , from the Julian Alps in the northwest down to the Šar-Korab massif, where the mountain direction changes to north-south. The highest mountain of the Dinaric Alps is Mount Prokletije, located on the border of eastern Montenegro and northern Albania, with the peak called "Lake Crest" at 2,694 metres . The Dinaric Alps are the fifth most rugged and extensively mountainous area of Europe after the Caucasus Mountains, Alps, Pyrenees and Scandinavian Mountains. They are formed largely of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary rocks of dolomite, limestone, sand and conglomerates formed by seas and lakes that had once covered the area. During the Alpine earth movements that occurred 50-100 million years ago, immense lateral pressures folded and overthrust the rocks in a great arc around the old rigid block of the northeast. The Dinaric Alps were thrown up in more or less parallel ranges, stretching like necklaces from the Julian Alps as far as the areas of northern Albania and Kosovo, where the mountainous terrain subsides to make way for the waters of Drin and the fields of Kosovo. The Šar and Korab mountains then rise and the mountainous terrain continues southwards to the Pindus of Greece and the mountains of the Peloponnese and Crete, Rhodes to the Taurus Mountains of southern Turkey.

Loro Boriçi Stadium

Loro Boriçi Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Shkodër, Albania currently used mostly for football matches and home ground of Vllaznia Shkodër. The stadium holds 16,000 spectators and was reconstructed in 2001. It is named in honour of Loro Boriçi, a famous player in the 1940s and 1950s. The stadium is also the second largest stadium in Albania behind the Qemal Stafa stadium in Tirana. Since May 2015, the stadium is undergoing major reconstruction works including the building of several new side stands.

Drisht Castle

Drisht Castle is a ruined castle above the modern Albanian village of Drisht, medieval Drivastum, in the municipal unit Postribë, Shkodër County, Albania. The earliest traces of fortifications date to the late Neolithic era. In the 9th century, it was part of the defences of the Zeta principality. Part of castle was built in the 13th century during the Byzantine rule. The current walls and towers date to 1396-1478 during the Venetian era. In the 14th century the castle became independent of Shkodra. In 1442 the castle was taken from Serbian Despot Đurađ Branković by the Venetian forces. It finally fell to the Ottomans during the massive siege of Shkodra in 1478. There are the remains of 11 houses inside the castle walls.

Lake Skadar

Lake Skadar — also called Lake Scutari, Lake Shkodër and Lake Shkodra — lies on the border of Albania and Montenegro, the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula. It is named after the city of Shkodër in northern Albania . It is a karst lake.

Theth is a community in the former Shalë municipality, Shkodër County, northern Albania. At the 2015 local government reform it became part of the municipality Shkodër. The community is at the centre of the Theth National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Vau I Dejës

Vau i Dejës , English: Deja's Ford, is a town and a municipality in Shkodër County, northwestern Albania. It was formed at the 2015 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities Bushat, Hajmel, Shllak, Temal, Vau i Dejës and Vig-Mnelë, that became municipal units. The seat of the municipality is the town Vau i Dejës. The total population is 30,438 , in a total area of 499.09 km2. The population of the former municipality at the 2011 census was 8,117. Vau i Dejës (or Vau Dejës or Vau-Dejës) also refers to the city center for the municipality, which is sometimes referred to as Laç or Laç-Vau i Dejës. Located in the norther region of Zadrima, Vau i Dejës is intersected by the Drin and Gjadër rivers. It is also strategically about 41 kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. Settlements in the area can be dated back to the 15th century, while the main city of Vau i Dejës was developed to house workers during the construction of the Vau i Dejës hydroelectric dam from 1971- 73. After the completion of the dam, families displaced from the flood waters began to inhabit the city. Today Vau i Dejës is composed of 8 villages and a city center. The population in 2008 was 12,345. The municipality covers a total of 31 km and is composed of 1 city center and 8 villages. The villages of Vau i Dejës are Mjedë, Spathar, Spathar, Shelqet, Kacë, Narac, Dush, Gomsiqe and Karmë. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sapë.

Mes Bridge

Mes Bridge is a bridge in the village of Mes, about five kilometres northeast of Shkodër, in northwestern Albania. It was built in the 18th century, around 1780, by Kara Mahmud Bushati, the local Ottoman pasha, and it spans the Kir River. It is 108 m long, and represent one of the longest Ottoman bridges in the region. It was built as part of the road that goes up the Kir Valley, eventually to Pristina.

Baleč

Baleč was a Serbian medieval fortified town near Shkodër in what is now Albania. It was built on the hill whose name was Baleš . The settlement may have originated in Roman times. During Byzantine rule over the area, it was part of the Dyrrhachium theme. Later it was a seat of a župa of the Kingdom of Duklja, and later still of the Lordship of Zeta. Baleč suffered much damage during the Second Scutari War between the Serbian Despotate and the Republic of Venice. After the Republic of Venice gained control over it at the beginning of the 15th century, its size was reduced to a small pronoia with only 25 houses, and the fortress was abandoned and fell to ruin. Skanderbegs forces rebuilt the fortress during his war with Venice in 1448 and established a strong garrison in it, but the Venetian forces soon drove them away and demolished the fortress. Ottoman plans to rebuild Baleč and populate it with Turkish settlers were never implemented and Baleč remained in ruins, which can still be seen today.

Parrucë Mosque

The Parrucë Mosque is the latest mosque in the northern Albanian city of Shkodra. The Parruca Mosque the predecessor was demolished in March 23, 1967 by the communist regime was completed in 2006 in Ottoman style with the money of Haxhi Sait Jakup Fishta. Exactly 40 years after the destruction of the old mosque, the Parruca Mosque was consecrated on March 23, 2007. The interior is decorated with bright color paintings.

Ismail Xhemali Stadium

Ismail Xhemali Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Pukë, Albania. The stadium has a seated capacity of 1,950 people and it is mostly used for football matches and it is the home ground of Tërbuni Pukë. Following Tërbuni Pukë's promotion to the Albanian Superliga for the first time in 2015, the Ismail Xhemali Stadium was inspected by the Albanian Football Association and it was deemed unfit to host top flight football games, and it required reconstruction to meet the minimum requirements of standards set by the Albanian Football Association ahead of the 2015-16 season. Renovations were required on the changing rooms for both players and officials, and seats needed to be installed for the first time in the stadium, rather than benches.

Fierza Hydroelectric Power Station

The Fierza Hydroelectric Power Station is a large hydroelectric power station on the Drin River, in Albania. Fierza is the upper HPP of the Drin River cascade. Based on the installed power capacity, position and the volume of the reservoir, Fierza plays a key role for the exploitation, regulation and safe operation of Drin cascade. Work for its construction began in 1970. The first power unit become operational in 1978 and the plant wad fully operational in 1980. Fierza HPP was build with equipment mostly from China but on the concepts of Albanian engineers. Around 14, 000 workers, engineers and specialist were involved in the construction of the plant. Fierza is a HPP with a Rock-fill dam with a clay core and reservoir. When it was build, Fierza was the second in Europe for the height of its type. The dam has a total volume of 8 million m3. This rock-fill dam measures 167 m in height, and 380 m in length along the crest. Construction began in 1971 and was completed seven years later in 1978. The dam is one of the three hydroelectric dams on the Drin River. The reservoir was filled with water between 1978 and 1981. The four units installed in the plant have "Francis" vertical turbines with 125 MW power each; 3-Phase synchronous generators of 13.8kV voltage; and lifting transformers 13.8kV/242 kV for the connection with the transmission substation. The annual output of Fierza HPP averages in 1,330 GWh, that represent approximately 33% of Drin cascade production. The importance of Fierza, beside energy production, relates on the capacity of its lake which regulates the annual inflowws and increase the efficient use of the Drin cascade.

Koman Hydroelectric Power Station

The Koman Hydroelectric Power Station is a large hydroelectric power station, for which a dam on the Drin River was built. The dam is near the settlement of Koman, northern Albania. It is the second of three dams on the Drin River; the Fierza Hydroelectric Power Station upstream, and the Vau i Dejës Hydroelectric Power Station downstream. The dam, 130m tall, was completed in 1985 and the reservoir was filled with water at full capacity in 1986. Completed in 1986, the power station consists of four turbines of French origin with a nominal capacity of 150 MW each, totalling the installed capacity to 600 MW.
