National Botanic Garden of Wales

The National Botanic Garden of Wales is situated near Llanarthney in the Towy Valley, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The garden is both a visitor attraction and a centre for botanical research and conservation, and features the worlds largest single-span glasshouse measuring 110 m long by 60 m wide. NBGW seeks "to develop a viable world-class national botanic garden dedicated to the research and conservation of biodiversity and its sustainable utilisation, to lifelong learning and to the enjoyment of the visitor." NBGW is a Registered Charity reliant upon funding from visitors, friends, grants and gifts. From 2008–2009 onwards, the garden will be receiving £550,000 revenue support per annum from the Welsh Assembly Government. Significant start-up costs were shared with the UK Millennium Fund.

Capel Heol Awst

Capel Heol Awst is an Independent Welsh chapel in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The present building dates from 1826–27, replacing a 1726 building which itself had been enlarged in 1802 and again in 1826 to seat a congregation of 1000. It is located at 7 Friars Park, Carmarthen. It was designated as a Grade II* listed building on 19 May 1981. The chapel was built in 1826 and 1827 by William Owen of Haverfordwest and is considered the finest chapel of its kind in the area. The exterior is plain with a big, hipped roof. There are two arched windows above two Iconic doorways. The interior is spacious, broad and well-fitted, with a single deep gallery. The box pews are neatly fitted and there is a most unusual pulpit; this is shaped like a wine-glass with a curved flight of steps. A similar pulpit is to be found in the nearby Capel Heol Dŵr, which was built in 1831, but they are rare elsewhere having disappeared when alterations and enlargements were made to chapels. Tabernacle Chapel, Llandovery, built in 1836, has a similar broad interior but differs in having large Gothic windows and a gabled roof. Capel Heol Awst was designated as a Grade II*-listed building on 19 May 1981, being an example of one of the outstanding early nineteenth century chapels in Wales, with "strong external architectural character and a good interior". The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales curates the archaeological, architectural and historic records for this church. These include digital photographs and colour transparencies of the exterior and interior of the building.

English Baptist Church

The English Baptist Church is a Baptist church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1869 and is located at the street address 9 Dark Gate in Lammas Street. The church was designated a Grade II* listed building on 19 May 1981. The church is set back from the road in a courtyard where the Black Horse Inn had previously stood. It was built between 1869 and 1870 by the Carmarthen architect George Morgan, his first major undertaking. Records show that the church cost £1,400 to build. The façade is built in temple-style from Bath stone, with four tall columns supporting the portico. There is a flight of wide stone steps leading to the entrance. The interior has a single raked gallery, behind which is an arch with painted foliage and fluted decoration. The edge of the gallery is bounded by a cast iron band and is supported by cast iron columns. The lower parts of the walls are panelled and the original furnishings are still in place; the great seat has a simple balustrade. The organ has a purpose-built gallery but was not installed until 1887. The church was designated a Grade II* listed building on 19 May 1981, as "one of the most architecturally-ambitious classical chapels in Wales". The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales curates the archaeological, architectural and historic records for this church. These include digital photographs and colour transparencies of the exterior and interior of the building, and a leaflet containing a short history of the church.

Christ Church

Christ Church is an Anglican parish church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1869 and is located at Friar's Park, Carmarthen. The parish church of Christ Church, Carmarthen was commenced by R. K. Penson in 1867. It was officially opened in September 1869, during the National Eisteddfod, by the Bishop of St David's, Connop Thirlwall. It was designed to be the English-language church for this expanding parish while Eglwys Dewi Sant, Carmarthen was designed to cater for Welsh-speaking parishioners. The organ was added in 1873 and renovations took place in 1891. The church has an unusual central tower with clasping buttresses and gables half way up. The church was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981, being "a prominent mid-Victorian church with crossing tower, a landmark in distant views".

Eglwys Dewi Sant

Eglwys Dewi Sant or St David's Church, was an Anglican parish church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The building dates from 1835 and is located at Picton Terrace, Carmarthen. Eglwys Dewi Sant is an Anglican parish church built in 1835 by Edward Haycock and was opened in 1837. Another parish church, Christ Church, Carmarthen, was built in 1867 to cater for the English members of the congregation of this expanding parish so that Eglwys Dewi Sant could concentrate on providing Welsh services for Welsh-speaking parishioners. The church was originally a rectangular building on a north/south axis with a tower at the front. In 1853–55, a new nave was added on an east/west axis and the interior of the church was rearranged with the altar and organ in different positions. The church was designated a Grade II-listed building on 19 May 1981, being "a prominent C19 suburban church with landmark tower. The establishment and subsequent history of enlargement, trace the growing importance of suburban development in this area". Storm damage in November 2003 caused the closure of the church. In 2011 the building was sold for £1. Concerns about the condition of the church and graveyard led to calls in 2015 for the Church in Wales to take responsibility for the upkeep of the latter.

Danycoed Halt railway station

Danycoed Halt, which is Welsh for below the trees, was built by the Gwili Railway in the late 1990s and opened in 2001. It is the current northern terminus of the line, but may become redundant when the preserved railway extends over a mile northwards into the nearby Conwyl station site and then further on up to Llanpumpsaint Station some 2½ miles further on. The halt (along with a nearby "Llwyfan Cerrig" station) did not exist in British Railways days and currently features a four-coach platform, a typical GWR storage hut and other station furniture such as lamp posts and benches. The track layout consists of a simple "run-round" loop (designed to allow the locomotive to run around and couple up to the carriages for the return journey) with a pair of points controlled by a "single throw" lever at the northern end, and a pair controlled by a two-lever ground frame locked by a key on the train staff at the southern end. Just beyond the north end of the platform, a wrought iron girder bridge crosses the River Gwili. The bridge requires repair and thus inhibits immediate progress into the site of "Conwyl Elfed" station, (Just three bridges across the River Gwili).

Bronwydd Arms railway station

Bronwydd Arms railway station, originally a stop on the now closed Carmarthen to Aberystwyth Line, is the current terminus of the preserved Gwili Railway. The station first opened on 3 September 1860 as part of the Carmarthen and Cardigan Railway and closed to passengers on 22 February 1965. Following closure, the station building and signal box were demolished, leaving behind only a bare platform. In 1978, the Gwili Railway re-opened the station and gradually rebuilt the station building and signal box using redundant buildings recovered from the Heart of Wales Line. The station building was constructed from Llandovery signal box, clad with components from Ammanford railway station, while the signal box from Llandybie was also recovered and is now used as the 'new' Bronwydd Arms signal box. A third box from central Wales, Ffairfach, is also in use as a museum. Other smaller items have been incorporated into the rebuilt station, such as Great Western Railway lamp posts and benches, a parcels shed and a water tower, recovered from Barry Docks in 1979. The station features a level crossing with wooden gates at the south end where the railway crosses the B4301 road. Passenger trains do not currently use the crossing but it will be brought into use when the railway's extension to Abergwili Junction is completed. In 2010 the level crossing was renewed to enable the original two-gate system to be re-instated in GWR style, thus re-creating another feature of the original station. The crossing and its gates were completed by August 2011. Work is being concentrated on the extension of the line to Abergwili Junction which is planned to open in 2017.

Eglwys Sant Ioan

Eglwys Sant Ioan, or Church of St John, is an Anglican church in the town of Carmarthen, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It was built in 1889–1890 as the Welsh language church for the parish of St Peter. It is located in Penuel Street. The architects for the building of Eglwys Sant Ioan were Middleton, Prothero & Phillot of Cheltenham. Alfred Edwards, Bishop of St. Asaph and former vicar of St Peter's, Carmarthen, laid the foundation stone on 25 June 1889 and Thomas Collins of Tewkesbury undertook the building work. The original estimate was for a total amount of around £2000 but the costs overan, and the final sum spent was £3041. The building was opened on 15 June 1890 by the Bishop of St. Davids. The church was designated as a Grade II listed building on 19 May 1981, being "a well-designed late Victorian smaller town church".

Carmarthen Public Rooms

The Carmarthen Public Rooms were built in 1854, with the intention to create public rooms were first expressed by Dr David Lloyd in 1839. Commonly referred to as the "Assembly Rooms" the building was designed by James Wilson of Bath on the site of the Scurlock family town house, where Sir Richard Steele, founder of The Spectator, died in 1729. The site was occupied by The Ivy Bush inn until c1801, and was then premises of the Timmins family, timber merchants. The Assembly Rooms had a 5-bay, 2-storey Italianate stucco facade with balustraded parapet, cornice, arched first floor windows between paired pilasters, and channelled ground floor with recessed sash windows and centre door. In 1918 an article appeared in the Carmarthen Journal stating that in future the Carmarthen Assembly Rooms were to be called The Lyric. The Lyric is a theatre and cinema, and was recently refurbished.

Bronwydd Arms transmitting station

The Bronwydd Arms television relay station is sited on high ground to the west of the village of Bronwydd Arms to the north of Carmarthen. It was originally built in mid 1989 as a fill-in relay for UHF analogue colour television covering the village of Bronwydd Arms and the surrounding community. It consists of a 14 m wooden telegraph pole standing on a hillside which is itself about 85 m above sea level. The transmissions are beamed east to cover the target. The Bronwydd Arms transmission station is owned and operated by Arqiva. Bronwydd Arms transmitter re-radiates the signal received off-air from Carmel about 30 km to the southeast. When it came, the digital switchover process for Bronwydd Arms duplicated the timing at Carmel with the first stage taking place on 26 August 2009 and with the second stage being completed on 23 September 2009. After the switchover process, analogue channels had ceased broadcasting permanently and the Freeview digital TV services were radiated at an ERP of 2 W each.

Carmarthen transmitting station

The Carmarthen transmitting station was originally built by the BBC in 1964/65 as a relay for VHF radio and VHF television. The site was built on a 135 m ridge to the north of Carmarthen itself, and entered service on 15 March 1965. The transmission station is now owned and operated by Arqiva. UHF 625-line colour television was never radiated from this site: the main transmitter at Carmel provided that service to the town from 1973 when it opened. The 405-line VHF television service closed across the UK in 1985, but according to the BBC's transmitter list and the BBC's internal "Eng. Inf." magazine, Carmarthen was due to close early - in the first quarter of 1982. From that point onwards the site just relayed FM radio until 6 June 2011 when a single multiplex of DAB radio was added.

Cynwyl Elfed transmitting station

The Cynwyl Elfed television relay station is sited on high ground to the east of the village of Cynwyl Elfed to the north of Carmarthen. It was originally built in mid 1989 as a fill-in relay for UHF analogue colour television covering the village of Cynwyl Elfed and the surrounding community. It consists of a 14 m self-supporting lattice steel mast standing on a hillside which is itself about 115 m above sea level. The transmissions are beamed west to cover the target. The Cynwyl Elfed transmission station is owned and operated by Arqiva. Cynwyl Elfed transmitter re-radiates the signal received off-air from Preseli about 20 km to the west. When it came, the digital switchover process for Cynwyl Elfed duplicated the timing at Preseli with the first stage taking place on 19 August 2009 and with the second stage being completed on 16 September 2009. After the switchover process, analogue channels had ceased broadcasting permanently and the Freeview digital TV services were radiated at an ERP of 2 W each.
