Top Attractions in Varmland County

Mårbacka

Mårbacka is a mansion in Sunne Municipality in Värmland, Sweden. Author Selma Lagerlöf was born and raised at Mårbacka. The main building was constructed in 1793 and rebuilt in 1921–1923, designed by architect Isak Gustaf Clason. The estate was owned from about 1720 by the assistant vicar Olof Morell and then was inherited by two of his successors in office. In 1801 it was inherited by the Lagerlöf family and when Selma Lagerlöfs father Lieutenant Gustaf Lagerlöf died in 1885 his son Johan took over, but he was unsuccessful running the farm and went bankrupt. He moved to America and the mansion had to be sold. The family lost the ownership of the estate in 1889. Selma Lagerlöf bought back the main building in 1907 and in 1910, she could buy back the whole estate with the help of the prize money she received from the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. A few years later, when she had the building reconstructed, not much of the original appearance of her childhood home remained. The original red-painted cottage was extended eastward, a new floor and an attic were added and the grand facade completed its transformation into an elegant mansion. Mårbacka is now kept as a memorial estate, as a result of the author writing in her testament that Mårbacka should be preserved and shown to the public in the condition it was at her death. By paid entrance, visitors can get a guided tour of the main building and next to the building is also a garden, a cafe and a bookstore. In the barn there is a memorial exhibition of Lagerlöfs life and writings.

Löfbergs Arena

Löfbergs Arena is an arena located in Karlstad, Sweden, situated just above the river delta of Klarälven. It is primarily used for ice hockey, and is the home arena of Färjestad BK. It opened in 2001 following a complete overhaul and major expansion of the previously existing arena Färjestads Ishall. It replaced Färjestads Ishall as the home of Färjestad and has a capacity of 8,647 people. In 2004 and 2006, the arena hosted a semi-final of Melodifestivalen. Other notable music artists and groups who have performed at the arena include Elton John, Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Bryan Adams, Dolly Parton, Rod Stewart, Motörhead and Judas Priest. On September 30, 2009, Färjestad BK faced off against the NHL's Detroit Red Wings in an exhibition match from the arena, losing 6-2. The arena was named the host of the 2010 Men's World Inline Hockey Championships, as well as the 2012 European Curling Championships. The name of the arena comes from the coffee roastery Löfbergs.

Löfbergs

Löfbergs, named Löfbergs Lila between 1906–2012, is a coffee roastery in Karlstad, Sweden. It was founded in 1906 by the three brothers Josef, Anders and John Löfberg. Löfbergs is today one of the largest coffee roasteries in the Nordic countries. The company is still family owned and is now in third and fourth generation. The main office and one of the roasteries is in Karlstad. They own 50% of Peter Larsens Kaffe in Viborg, Denmark. Löfbergs also owns Kobbs tea. The company has 200 employees. As of 1999 the company had a 20% market share in Sweden. In recent years Löfbergs have strengthened their position in the market, with an emphasis on social responsibility and working for a better environment. Löfbergs is one of Europe's largest importers of organic and fair trade coffee, as well as being Sweden's major supplier of coffee to restaurants, cafés and companies. Löfbergs sponsors the ice hockey team Färjestad BK as well as Löfbergs Arena. For many years, Färjestad's team colours were the same purple and yellow as Löfbergs's colours, but that was changed for the 2006–07 season. In August 2012, the roastery dropped "Lila" from its name to become Löfbergs.

Wermlands Brygghus

Wermlands Brygghus is a microbrewery located in Kristinehamn, Värmland, in the west of central Sweden. The brewery was founded in 2012 by Hans and Christina Skan. It is the first microbrewey in Värmland and the first operating brewery in Kristinehamn since 1957, when the then last operating brewery was taken over by Pripps and subsequently closed. Brewing started in 2013 and the first beer brewed was the Wermlands Premiärbrygd, a classic Ale. The Wermlands Premiärbrygd was originally intended to be a one-time production, but has since become brewed on regular basis. As of 2016, the brewery has an assortment of eight beers, including a seasonal Christmas beer and three low-alcohol beers. Yearly production is estimated at 70,000-75,000 liters for 2015 and 100,000 liters for 2016, compared to 45,000 liters for 2013. As of May 2015, the brewery had 3,5 full time employees but was planning to increase the staff. The brewery offers tours and openings for both private persons and companies.

Karlstad University

Karlstad University (Swedish Karlstads universitet) is a state university in Karlstad, Sweden. The university, being a former university college (founded 1977) was granted university status in 1999 by the Government of Sweden. Originally it was a branch of the University of Gothenburg. There are about 40 training programmes, 30 programme extensions and 900 courses within humanities, social studies, science, technology, teaching, health care and arts. As of today, it has approximately 16,000 students and 1,200 employees. Its university press is named Karlstad University Press. Service Research Center (Swedish Centrum för tjänsteforskning), or "CTF", at Karlstad University is one of the world's leading research centers focusing on service management and value creation through service. On March 26, 2009 the faculty of Economics, communication and IT formed Karlstad Business School (Swedish Handelshögskolan vid Karlstads universitet) as a brand of their educational programmes in the business related areas. Karlstad University has two a cappella groups, Sällskapet CMB and Söt Likör. Many students live at the nearby student accommodation facilities called Unionen and Campus Futurum. The motto of the University is Sapere aude (Dare to know).

Ransäters bruksherrgård

Ransäters bruksherrgård, even called Geijersgården, is a mansion and Erik Gustaf Geijers birthplace located at Ransäter in Värmland, Sweden. There is a museum in the main building of the mansion. Earlier Ransäter was an ironwork. It was built in the 17th century by mayor Johan Börjesson who later also built Munkfors work. The ironwork had three bar iron hammers which were closed in the end of the 19th century. The work was bought by Erik Gustaf Geijers grandfather, later it was sold by his younger brother Emanuel in 1817 to Barthold Dahlgren, the father of the author Fredrik August Dahlgren. Later Fredrik August Dahlgren got married to a sister daughter of Erik Gustaf Geijer. Geijersgården was sold to Forshaga sulfit AB, but in 1907 the Geijer family bought it. The farm was a long and white-painted 1-floor-woodbuilding. The building was demolished and in the summer of 1914 a new building was built by parts of the old building. Today Geijersgården is a museum of Erik Gustaf Geijer, Fredrik August Dahlgren and the painter Uno Troili.

Arvika Festival

Arvika Festival was an annual music festival held in Arvika, Sweden. It took place during three days in the middle of July, from Thursday to Saturday, with camping available from the beginning of the week. The non-profit association "Galaxen" (Swedish for "The Galaxy") arranged the festival. Since the nineties, the festival had built up a tradition of booking many big synth-pop bands. This was initially an unintended side effect: for the first festival in 1992 the arrangers had booked Cat Rapes Dog, Pouppée Fabrikk and S.P.O.C.K. and about 50% of the audience that showed up was actually mostly interested in these bands since no other festival booked many synth acts. However, along with the synth bands, internationally and nationally famous rock and pop acts visit the festival every year, attracting people not only interested in synth pop. In 2006, somewhere between 15000 and 16000 people visited the festival, breaking a new record in ticket sales, and confirming the festival's spot as one of the big ones in Sweden. In 2009 the total number of tickets sold were 22500 including all three-day and one-day passes.
