Roxas City

Roxas, officially the City of Roxas or Roxas City, is a component city in the province of Capiz, Philippines. It is considered as one of Panay Island's center of education, trade, economic activity and logistics. Once known as the Municipality of Capiz, the origin of the present name of the province, was renamed into Roxas City in honor of native Manuel Roxas, the First President of the Philippine Third Republic, after it became a chartered city on May 12, 1951. Languages spoken in Roxas City are Capiznon and Hiligaynon. Based on the 2010 census of population, the city has a population of 156,197 and a density of 1,542.89/km2 people with 95.4% literacy. The abundance of marine life makes Roxas City the "Seafood Capital of the Philippines." It has received Cleanest and Greenest Component City in Western Visayas Award in the Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran Cleanliness and Environmental contest. The Department of Health awarded the city with the Red Orchid Award for being "100 percent tobacco-free." It has also gained the Department of Interior and Local Government Seal of Good Housekeeping and won the Best Police Station in the region by the Philippine National Police.

La Carlota City

La Carlota, officially City of La Carlota, is a fourth class city in the central Philippine province of Negros Occidental. According to the 2010 official census, it has a population of 63,852. Until two years after its foundation in 1871, it was known as Simancas, a barrio under the jurisdiction of the neighboring town of San Enrique, which was led by a Spaniard who was married to a woman named Carlota. Legend has it that she was well-loved by the natives for her social works so that they named their settlement after her when it was created as a municipality near the end of the Spanish colonial era in the Philippines. In line with the Spanish practice of adding an article before a proper noun, “La Carlota” became its official name. On June 19, 1965, by virtue of Republic Act No. 4585, La Carlota was granted a city charter, becoming the only landlocked city in the island province. In 2011, the Department of the Interior and Local Government awarded the city with a "seal of good housekeeping" for its efforts in advancing accountability and transparency in local governance. In the same year, it was also named as one of the top performing local government units in the Philippines, ranking eighth in the component cities category. On December 29, 2011, the city was nominated for excellence in local governance, an honor given by the provincial government under its Pagpasidungog Awards .

Bacolod City

Bacolod /ˌbɒˈkoʊləd/, officially the City of Bacolod , is a highly urbanized city in the Philippines. It is the capital of the province of Negros Occidental. Having a total of 511,820 inhabitants as of 2010, it is the most populous city in the Negros Island Region and the second most populous city in the Visayas after Cebu City. It is part of the Bacolod Metropolitan Area, which also includes the cities of Silay and Talisay. It is notable for its MassKara Festival held during the third week of October. Known for being a relatively friendly city, it bears the nickname "City of Smiles". In 2008, Bacolod topped a survey by MoneySense Magazine as the "Best Place to Live in the Philippines". The city has also been declared by the Department of Science and Technology as a "center of excellence" for information technology and business process management operations.

Iloilo City

Iloilo City, officially the City of Iloilo , is a highly urbanized city on Panay island in the Philippines. It is the capital city of the province of Iloilo and is also the regional center of the Western Visayas region as well as the center of the Iloilo-Guimaras Metropolitan Area. In the 2010 census, Iloilo City had a population of 424,619 with a 1.8% population annual growth rate. For the metropolitan area, the total population is 878,621. Iloilo City is bordered by the towns of Oton in the west, Pavia in the north, Leganes in the northeast and the Iloilo Strait in its eastern and southern coastline. The city was a conglomeration of former towns, which are now the geographical districts consisting of: Jaro (an independent city-before), Molo, La Paz, Mandurriao, Villa Arevalo, and Iloilo City Proper. The district of Lapuz, a former part of La Paz, was declared a separate district in 2008.

Silay City

Silay, officially City of Silay, is a third class city in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. According to the 2010 census, it had a total population of 120,999 people. It is part of the metropolitan area called Metro Bacolod, which includes the cities of Bacolod and Talisay. It has a sizable commercial and fishing port and is the site of the new Bacolod-Silay International Airport, which replaced the Bacolod City Domestic Airport. Silay is often referred to as the "Paris of Negros" due to its artists, cultural shows and large collection of perfectly preserved heritage houses. More than thirty of these houses have been declared by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines as part of the Silay National Historical Landmark. In 2015, the city celebrated its 58th charter anniversary.

Panay Church

The Santa Monica Parish Church , commonly known as Panay Church, is the oldest church on the island of Panay located in Panay Municipality, Capiz, Philippines. It is also the home of the largest church bell in the Philippines and the fifth biggest in the world. The original structure of the church was built during the term of Fr. Manuel Lopez between 1692 and 1698, but it was reported that a typhoon had ruined it. In 1774, Fr. Miguel Murguía rebuilt the church, but it was also later damaged by a typhoon on 15 January 1875. Fr. José Beloso restored the church in 1884. The original name of the settlement was Bamban and it was changed by the early Spaniards to Panay, a word which means “mouth of the river". This is also the location of a fortress built by Juan de la Isla in late 1570.

Northern Negros Natural Park

The Northern Negros Natural Park is a protected area of the Philippines located in the northern mountainous forest region of the island of Negros in the Visayas. It is spread over five municipalities and six cities in the province of Negros Occidental and is the provinces largest watershed and water source for seventeen municipalities and cities including the Bacolod metropolitan area. The park was established first as a forest reserve spanning 107,727 hectares on 28 April 1935 through Administrative Act No. 789 signed by Governor-General Frank Murphy. On 7 August 1946, the Northern Negros Forest Reserve was reduced to its present area of 80,454.5 hectares with the signing of Proclamation No. 798 by President Manuel Roxas. In 2005, the protected area was converted into a natural park under the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act by virtue of Proclamation No. 895 signed by President Gloria Arroyo.

Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park

The Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park is located on the island of Panay, in the provinces of Aklan and Antique of the Philippines which was proclaimed a natural park by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on 18 April 2002 . The Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park has an area of 120.09 km2, found within the municipalities of Nabas, Malay, Buruanga, Libertad and Pandan. The site is home to a wide range of flora and fauna of the Western Visayas, as the Visayan leopard cat, the Visayan warty pig, the Visayan spotted deer, the Negros bleeding-heart dove, the blue-naped parrot, the Visayan hornbill, Waldens hornbill, and the Panay monitor. The Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park is also an important watershed. The forest of the Natural Park channels the water from the rains into a system of springs and rivers that provide water for over 100,000 inhabitants. The water for Boracay Island and the hundreds of thousands of tourists that visit there every year is also provided by the Northwest Panay watershed. As this area is considered highly important, the Northwest Panay Biodiversity Management Council was formed in 1999 to protect it. The NPBMC is made up of the local government units of Northwest Panay, Non-governmental organizations like BioCon, and National and Local Government Agencies like the Department of Environment and Natural Resources .

Fountain of Justice

The Fountain of Justice is a historic landmark in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. It marks the location where the house of Jose Ruiz de Luzurriaga used to stand. It was in this house that the surrender of Bacolod by Spanish authorities to the Filipino forces of General Aniceto Lacson took place on November 6, 1898, during the Negros Revolution. Luzurriaga acted as mediator between the two belligerents. Colonel Isidro de Castro, Spanish governor of Negros, signed the surrender document on behalf of the Spanish forces. The landmark now lies in front of the old Bacolod City Hall. The plaza and fountain area is also a place for recreation, political, spiritual and cultural activities and is illuminated at night. The fountain is a meeting place for rallies and protesters of many organizations, private, public and labor movements and political sectors. The fountain was the site of the celebration of the 66th Charter Anniversary of Bacolod City.

Rose Memorial Auditorium

The Rose Memorial Auditorium is a large multi-purpose theater on the campus of Central Philippine University in Jaro, Iloilo City. Rose is the largest auditorium in Western Visayas with a seating capacity of ~4000+ and has hosted over 100+ international and local concerts, conventions and events. The present day structure was built in the 90s after the old one was burned down by fire. Recently, the Cultural Center of the Philippines has designated the Rose Memorial Auditorium for three-year Memorandum of Understanding, as one of the first batch of nine Cultural Center of the Philippines Regional Art Centers or Kaisa sa Sining Regional Art Centers in 2014. With exception to the concerts that Rose hosts, it is also the venue for religious convocations of Central Philippine University and an biennial convention of the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches.

La Salle Coliseum

The La Salle Coliseum is an indoor sporting arena located in Bacolod, Philippines. The Coliseum has played host to a number of basketball games including those of Philippine Basketball Association out of town games and the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association. It served as the home court of the Negros Slashers of the MBA. It is the largest indoor facility in Western Visayas. It is located inside the campus of the University of St. La Salle and hosts sporting and entertainment events in the province. Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural Educational Association sports opening ceremony are usually held in the coliseum and was the official venue during the 2005 Southeast Asian Games particularly the Boxing event where 11 countries participated the competition. The coliseum also hosted two major karatedo championships, the 1996 Philippine Karatedo Federation National Championship headed by Pocholo Veguillas and Cristina Ramos-Jalasco, former Philippine Olympic Committee chairman and daughter of former president Fidel Ramos and the 2007 20th PKF National Open. Both tournaments were held at the USLS Coliseum. The tournaments were participated by hundreds of karatekas all over the country.

Central Philippine University Library

The Central Philippine University Library is a library system located on the campus of the Central Philippine University in Iloilo City, Philippines. Central Philippine University Library is one of the largest libraries in the Philippines (largest library in Western Visayas). The library has more than 250,000 volumes including holdings of special collections like the 40,000 United Nations Documents, American Studies Resource Center, Meyer-Asian Collection, Food and Agriculture Organization and Elizabeth Knox Sacred Music Collection. Rare collections of Second World War documents and Asian archaeological artifacts is also in the collection of the main library. The CPU Library System is composed of various libraries where the Henry Luce III Library is the main library. Henry Luce III Library, the main library, encompasses the library system's departmental libraries and was constructed and funded through the Henry Luce Foundation by Henry Luce III, the elder son of the founder and editor in chief of Time Inc.. The Central Philippine University Library has been designated by the Philippine National Statistics Office as National Statistics Office (NSO) Information Center for Western Visayan region. The Henry Luce III is also a depository of the United Nations and the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). The library is a regular recipient of library materials from international and local organizations and centers such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Population Council in New York, National Library of the Philippines in Manila, Australian Centre for Publication Acquired for Development (ACPAD), Population Information Network, and the International Rice Research Institute (in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines). Through the library system’s American Studies Resource Center (ASRC), which is located in the main library (Henry Luce III Library), is also a regular recipient from the: Thomas Jefferson Information Center in Manila (one of the 13 such centers in the Philippines), and the United States Information Service. The Henry Luce III Library's American Studies Resource Center helps/assists students who want to study in the United States through its Educational Advising Program. A Knowledge for Development Center, donated by the World Bank in consortium with the University was launched in 2008 The CPU World Bank Knowledge for Development Center is one of such centers which are hubs for dialogue and research on development issues established by the World Bank in key cities around the country in partnership with leading state and private universities. The library system maintains accord with the Silliman University and Trinity University of Asia libraries.

University Church

The University Church, Central Philippine University, commonly referred as University Church, UC or CPU Church, is located on the main campus of the Central Philippine University, Jaro District, Iloilo City, Philippines. Officially, the church was founded in 1913. The present church building was built after an older chapel housed in Rose Memorial Hall was destroyed by fire in 1995. Notably, the church architecture is resonant of an Indonesian or Malayan style of house built on palm leaves and bamboo and is a famous landmark in Iloilo. It is independent from the University and is a member of Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches . The church seats almost 1,000 people. A denominational church, it hosts weekly and mid week Congregational Christian Protestant worship services. It also hosts several annual special events, such as baccalaureate services and commencements.

Central Philippine University

Central Philippine University is a private research university in Iloilo City, Philippines. It was established in 1905 through a grant given by the American business magnate, industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller under the auspices of the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, it is the first Baptist founded and second American university in the Philippines and Asia. It initially consisted of two separate schools: the Jaro Industrial School for boys and the Baptist Missionary Training School that trains ministers and other Christian workers. In 1913, women began to be admitted to the school for boys, and in 1920 the school started offering high school education. The school for boys became a junior college and started offering college degrees in 1923 and changed its name to Central Philippine College. In 1936 the junior college became a senior college and two years after it in 1938, the Baptist Missionary Training School merged with the theology department of the college. In 1953, the college attained university status. Central pioneered nursing education in the Philippines, when Presbyterian American missionaries established the Union Mission Hospital Training School for Nurses in 1906. In the same year, the CPU Republic (Central Philippine University Republic), the university's official student governing body, was organized, making it as the first established student governing body in South East Asia. Central was also the first institution to pioneer the work-study programs in the country that were later patterned and followed by other institutions. The university's hospital, the Iloilo Mission Hospital, which was established in 1901 by the Presbyterian Americans, is the first American and Protestant founded hospital in the Philippines, predating the founding of CPU by four years. The university is affiliated with the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches and maintains fraternal ties with the International Ministries of the American Baptist Churches, known before as the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, but maintains to be non-sectarian and independent. CPU consists of fifteen schools and colleges that provides instruction in basic education all the way up to the post-graduate levels. In the undergraduate and graduate levels, its disciplines include accountancy, arts and sciences, business, computer studies, education, engineering, law, mass communication, medical laboratory sciences, medicine, pharmacy, lifestyle and fitness, tourism, nursing and theology. The Commission on Higher Education has granted the University a full autonomous status, the same government agency that accredited some of its programs as Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development. while its Civil Engineering program has been designated by the Department of Science and Technology as Center for Civil Engineering Education. It has also been registered and declared as a National Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and certifies as one of the few ISO certified educational institutions in the Philippines by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Recently, through international collaborations with other institutions, CPU has offered international undergraduate, graduate and doctorate extension programs in Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese universities, especially the Thai Nguyen University of Economics and Business Administration in Vietnam.
