Devil's Grinding Mill

The Devils Grinding Mill, sometimes known as the Devils Hole, is part of The Angels Drainpipe, a partially collapsed cave system on the River Eden in England, which forms dramatic gorges and natural arches. It is located South of Kirkby Stephen within Stenkrith Park. The water moving with the caves and gorges produces an incessant roar. Geologically it is unusual as it has formed not in true limestone, but in brockram, a breccia of limestone fragments within sandstone. In 1828 it was visited by a travel writer who remembered it as follows : At about three quarters of a mile east of Kirby Stephen, Westmoreland, is a bridge of solid rock, known by the name of Staincroft Bridge or Stonecroft Bridge, under which runs a small but fathomless rivulet. The water roars and gushes through the surrounding rocks and precipices with such violence, as almost to deafen the visitor. Three or four yards from the bridge is an immense abyss, where the waters “incessantly roar”, which goes by the name of Devil’s Hole; the tradition of which is, that two lovers were swallowed up in this frightful gulf. The neighbouring peasants tell a tale of one Deville, a lover, who, through revenge, plunged his fair mistress into these waters, and afterwards followed her. How far this story may get belief, I know not; but such they aver is the truth, while they mournfully lament the sad affair. They point out a small hole in the bank where you may hear the waters dashing with fury against the projecting rocks. This, some imagine to be the noise of infernal spirits, who have taken up their abode in this tremendous abyss; while others persist in their opinion, that the lover’s name was Deville, and that it retains his name to this day, in commemoration of the horrid deed. I have seen, and taken a view of the frightful place, which may rather be imagined than described. One part of the water was formerly so narrow, that a wager was laid by a gentleman that he could span it with the thumb and little finger, and which he would have accomplished, but his adversary, getting up in the night time, chipped a piece off the rock with a hammer, and thus won the wager. It is now, however, little more than from a foot and a half, to two feet broad, excepting at the falls and Devil’s Hole. The water runs into the Eden at the distance of about a mile or two from Staincroft Bridge. Trout are caught with the line and net in great quantities, and are particularly fine here.

Stainmore Railway Company

Stainmore Railway Company is a volunteer run non-profit preservation company formed in 2000 with the aim of restoring Kirkby Stephen East railway station in Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, England. In 1997 a company called Stainmore Properties Ltd. was formed, with the intention to convert KSE into an authentic North Eastern Railway focused heritage centre representing the early 1950s. The Stainmore Railway Company was subsequently formed to restore the site. Since then essential repairs have been made to the roof and station, a number of rooms have been restored and a short section of track has been laid along the formation of the old Eden Valley Line, with some sidings and yard infrastructure within the station area and surroundings. A quantity of rolling stock that is authentic to the site has since been brought in and further arrivals are expected in 2015. The station was formerly on the South Durham Lancashire Union Railway and the company aims to relay a short section of track to allow train running. There is the eventual aim of joining up with the Heritage Eden Valley Railway, respectively. August 2011 marked the 150th anniversary of the railway. To commemorate this occasion a series of events were held during 2011, leading up to Stainmore 150, a large event, where Steve Davis, the then-head of the National Railway Museum, drove the first fare-paying passenger train from the station in over 50 years. In 2013 the Stainmore Railway Company began its first operating season, running Peckett 0-4-0 F C Tingey on selected weekends. In 2014 this was joined by Yorkshire Engine Company Stanton which operates diesel hauled trains on weekends when there is no steam service.

Brough Castle

Brough Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Brough, Cumbria, England. The castle was built by William Rufus around 1092 within the old Roman fort of Verterae to protect a key route through the Pennine mountains. The initial motte and bailey castle was attacked and destroyed by the Scots in 1174 during the Great Revolt against Henry II. Rebuilt after the war, a square keep was constructed and the rest of the castle converted to stone. The Clifford family took possession of Brough after the Second Barons War in the 1260s; they built Cliffords Tower and undertook a sequence of renovations to the castle, creating a fortification in a typical northern English style. In 1521, however, Henry Clifford held a Christmas feast at the castle, after which a major fire broke out, destroying the property. The castle remained abandoned until Lady Anne Clifford restored the property between 1659 and 1661, using it as one of her northern country homes. In 1666 another fire broke out, once again rendering the castle uninhabitable. Brough Castle went into sharp decline and was stripped first of its fittings and then its stonework. The castles masonry began to collapse around 1800. In 1921, Brough Castle was given to the state and is now run by English Heritage as a tourist attraction. It is a listed building and a scheduled monument.

Kirkby Stephen railway station

Kirkby Stephen railway station serves the town of Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria, England. It is operated by Northern, which provides all passenger train services. The station was designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders. The station is nearly a mile from the town at Midland Hill and was formerly known as Kirkby Stephen West because of the older Kirkby Stephen or Kirkby Stephen East station that was situated in the town and was on the North Eastern Railway's Stainmore and Eden Valley lines. It closed (along with all the other stations apart from Settle and Appleby) in May 1970 but reopened by British Rail in July 1986. The station is leased by the Settle and Carlisle Railway Trust, which comprehensively restored it in 2009. The main buildings now incorporate a caretaker's flat, offices and the Midland Room, opened in July 2011, which includes a cafe and exhibition of items related to the Settle and Carlisle railway.
