Comodoro Rivadavia

Comodoro Rivadavia is a city in the Patagonian province of Chubut in southern Argentina, located on the San Jorge Gulf, an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean, at the foot of the Chenque Hill. Comodoro Rivadavia is the most important city of the San Jorge Basin. The city is often referred simply as Comodoro. It was at one time the capital of Comodoro Rivadavia Territory, which existed from 1943 to 1955. The territory was a part of Chubut before and after its creation, and the city became the capital of Escalante Department. It had a population of 137,061 at the 2001 census [INDEC], and grew to 182,631 by the 2010 census. Comodoro Rivadavia is a commercial and transportation center for the surrounding region, the largest city of Chubut, and an important export point for a leading Argentine petroleum district. A 1,770 km pipeline conveys natural gas from Comodoro Rivadavia to Buenos Aires. Founded by decree on February 23, 1901, as a port for the inland settlement of Sarmiento, the first settler was Francisco Pietrobelli. Early settlers included Boers escaping British rule in South Africa, as well as Welsh settlers. The town was named in honour of shipping minister Martín Rivadavia, a proponent of the development of Southern Argentina. It has been prosperous since 1907, when a drilling crew searching for water struck oil at a depth of 539 m. The city is the home of the main faculty of the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco. The Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Comodoro Rivadavia, of which the Bishop is, since 2005, Virginio Domingo Bressanelli. The Cathedral is dedicated to San Juan Bosco, the only cathedral in the world dedicated to the founder of the Salesian Order. It was inaugurated in 1979, although the crypt itself had been dedicated in 1949. Rada Tilly is a beach resort and now suburb 12 km south of Comodoro. The National Museum of Petroleum is located in the General Mosconi neighbourhood 3 km north of central Comodoro Rivadavia. It was opened in 1987 by the state-owned oil company YPF. Comodoro Rivadavia is served by General Enrique Mosconi International Airport with daily flights to Buenos Aires and many other Patagonian cities, as it is the main hub of LADE.

La Trochita

La Trochita, in English known as the "Old Patagonian Express", is a 750 mm narrow gauge railway in Patagonia, Argentina using steam locomotives. The nickname La Trochita means literally "little gauge" though it is sometimes translated as "The Little Narrow Gauge" in Spanish while "trocha estrecha" is often used for a generic description of "narrow gauge." The Trochita railway is 402 km in length and runs through the foothills of the Andes between Esquel and El Maitén in Chubut Province and Ingeniero Jacobacci in Río Negro Province, originally it was part of Ferrocarriles Patagónicos, a network of railways in southern Argentina. Nowadays, with its original character largely unchanged, it operates as a heritage railway and was made internationally famous by the 1978 Paul Theroux book The Old Patagonian Express, which described it as the railway almost at the end of the world. Theroux had sought to ride trains as far as possible into southern Argentina but did not include in his adventures the several railroads which were further south than Esquel, presumably because they were not considered operational or with sufficient connection to larger lines.

Lago Puelo National Park

The Lago Puelo National Park is a national park of Argentina, located in the northwest of the province of Chubut, in the Patagonia. It has an area of 276.74 km². It was created in order to protect its wonderful landscape and the Valdivian flora, as an annex to the Los Alerces National Park, and declared National Park and independent reserve in 1971. The protected area is named after the Puelo Lake, and belongs to the Patagonic forest and steppes and High Andes eco-regions, with maximum heights of two hundred meters over sea level. The climate is cold and wet, with snowfall in winter. The valley has a trans-Andean connection and a particular microclimate. The mountainous zone where the park lies was modified by the action of glaciers, which created many rivers and lakes, including the one that gives the park its name. The rivers of the region show high levels of glacier sediment, which gives Puelo Lake its blue color. Some of the flora of the park belongs to the Valdivian rain forests . It also includes the ciprés de la cordillera, the coihue, the lenga, the radal, and the arrayán. The rosa mosqueta is an exotic plant. The fauna includes the pudú, the huemul, the red fox, the cougar, and the coipo. Among birds we find the huala, the pato vapor volador, the bandurria, the pitío and the zorzal patagónico. The lake features native fish such as the perca, the peladilla and the puyén grande, and foreign species of trout. The first settlers of the region were hunter-gatherers who lived in the steppe and employed stone tools to hunt guanacos. There are cave paintings within the park, apparently showing representations of paths into the forest. Nowadays Mapuche communities live in the eastern part of the park.

Los Alerces National Park

The Los Alerces National Park is a national park in Chubut Province, Argentina, some 30 miles from Esquel. It is a park of 2,630 square kilometres along the border with Chile, best known for the alerce trees from which the park takes its name. The park was created in 1937 in order to protect the alerce forest, and other typical examples of the flora of the Patagonian Andes. The National Park has the largest alerce forest of Argentina. Alerce is one of the longest-living trees in the world; some in the park are around 3,000 years old, with many of them over 1,000 years. It grows very slowly and belongs to the family Cupressaceae. The principal forest in the park, visited by tourists, is at Puerto Sagrario at the northern end of Lago Menéndez. Arrayán trees can be seen along the Arrayanes river. In the west of the park, there is high rainfall and Valdivian temperate rain forests below the high Andes mountains. Much of the rest of the park is Patagonian forest similar to the Lanín and Nahuel Huapi National Parks, with coihues and lenga in addition to the alerce. There is a complex lake system with many rivers. The most important are the Menendez, Rivadavia, Futalaufquen and Krüger lakes, and the Frey river. A hydroelectric dam, providing energy to industry in Puerto Madryn, has created the large artificial Lake Amutui Quimei, which empties into the Futaleufú River which flows on to Chile. There is good walking and fishing in the park, and boat trips on the lakes. The Torrecillas glacier can be seen from tour boats.

Florentino Ameghino Dam

The Florentino Ameghino Dam (Dique Florentino Ameghino) is a gravity dam in Chubut Province, Patagonia, Argentina, 140 kilometres (87 mi) west of the city of Trelew. The dam also protects the towns in the lower Chubut River valley from flooding. The Florentino Ameghino is located on the Chubut River, which originates from snowmelt in the Andes. Work began on the dam in 1943, led by the engineer Antonio Pronsato; the dam was inaugurated in 1963. The dam has two Francis turbines of 30 megawatts (40,000 hp) each. The dam is currently operated by Hidroeléctrica Ameghino. Adjacent to the dam is a town with approximately 200 residents called Villa Dique Florentino Ameghino. The dam takes its name from Florentino Ameghino, an Argentine naturalist, paleontologist, anthropologist and zoologist.

Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport

Almirante Marcos A. Zar Airport (Welsh: Maes Awyr Almirante Marcos A. Zar, Spanish: Aeropuerto Almirante Marcos A. Zar) (IATA: REL, ICAO: SAVT) is an airport in Trelew, Chubut Province, Argentina, named after the Argentine Navy Admiral and naval aviator Marcos Andrés Zar. The airport serves the cities of Trelew and Rawson. Two airlines operate regularly to the airport, LADE and Aerolíneas Argentinas. This airport replaced an airport noted as a pivotal site during the Trelew massacre. On August 15, 1972, 110 prisoners escaped from the Rawson jail and tried to hijack an Austral Líneas Aéreas BAC One-Eleven en route to Comodoro Rivadavia, in order to escape to Chile and from there to Cuba. Their plans failed, and 19 of them were killed by the army on August 22, at 3:30 AM. This airport is 7 km from the center of Trelew and 26 km from Rawson (capital city of Chubut). It has a 3,500m² passenger terminal and 126,000m² of runways. It has parking for 128 cars. It also home of the Argentine Naval Aviation squadron of P-3 Orions. It is operated by London Supply.
