Fukuoka

Fukuoka is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture and is situated on the northern shore of the island of Kyushu in Japan. Ranked tenth among the world's most livable cities in the global affairs and lifestyle magazine Monocle in 2014, Fukuoka was praised for its green spaces in a metropolitan setting. It is the most populous city in Kyushu, followed by Kitakyushu. It is the largest city and metropolitan area west of Keihanshin. The city was designated on April 1, 1972, by government ordinance. Greater Fukuoka , with 2.5 million people , is part of the heavily industrialized Fukuoka-Kitakyushu zone as well as Northern Kyushu. As of July 2011, Fukuoka is Japan's sixth largest city, having passed the population of Kyoto. Since the founding of Kyoto in 794, this marks the first time that a city west of the Kinki region has a larger population than Kyoto. In ancient times, however, the area near Fukuoka, the Chikushi region, was thought by some historians to have possibly been even more influential than the Yamato region.

Space World

Space World is a theme park in Yahatahigashi-ku, Kitakyūshū, Japan. Created in 1990 by Nippon Steel when the company was downsizing its steel plant in the ward, it is currently operated by Space World Inc., a subsidiary of Kamori Kankō. Space World offers a variety of attractions, with events held daily, and Space Camp, Japans first authentic educational space experience facility.

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History

Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History & Human History (北九州市立いのちのたび博物館[自然史・歴史博物館], Kitakyūshū Shiritsu Inochi-no-Tabi Hakubutsukan (Shizenshi-Rekishi Hakubutsukan)) opened in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, in 2002. Exhibiting materials relating to the city's natural history, archaeology, and history, it is successor of the Kitakyushu Museum of History (北九州市立歴史博物館), which opened in 1975, the Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History (北九州市立自然史博物館), which opened in 1981, and the Kitakyushu Museum of Archaeology (北九州市立考古博物館), which opened in 1983.

Sky Dream Fukuoka

The Sky Dream Fukuoka was a Ferris wheel which operated at Evergreen Marinoa in the city of Fukuoka, Japan, from 2001 until September 2009. It stood 120 metres tall, making it the tallest Ferris wheel in Japan during its years of operation, and the tallest Ferris wheel ever built in Japan. The gondolas were all air conditioned and accessible for wheelchair-users. One revolution took approximately 20 minutes. Sky Dream Fukuoka closed from 26 September 2009. It was subsequently sold to a Taiwanese company for rebuilding at Lihpao Land in Taiwan. Dismantling work commenced in 2010, although work was disrupted in July 2011 when supports failed, causing two cranes involved in dismantling to topple over, injuring one workman and damaging four cars.

Kyushu National Museum

The Kyushu National Museum opened on October 16, 2005 in Dazaifu near Fukuoka—the first new national museum in Japan in over 100 years, and the first to elevate the focus on history over art. The distinct modern impression created by the architectural facade is mirrored in the Museums use of technological innovations which are put to good in making the museums collections accessible to the public. For example, the museums extremely high resolution video system, with the latest image processing and color management software, serves both in documenting the objects in the museums collection and also in expanding access beyond the limits of a large, but finite exhibition space. The striking wood and glass building in the hills, it hosts important collections of Japanese artifacts, particularly ceramics, related to the history of Kyūshū. It hosts temporary exhibitions on the third floor, while the permanent collections are on the fourth floor. The collections cover the history of Kyūshū from prehistory to the Meiji era with particular emphasis on the rich history of cultural exchange between Kyūshū and neighboring China and Korea. Unlike most museums in Japan, which contract out conservation work, the Kyushu National Museum has an extensive on-site suite of conservation labs and associated staff, serving as the major conservation center for all of western Japan. The museum was designed by Kiyonori Kikutake.

Fukuoka Castle

Fukuoka Castle is a Japanese castle located in Chūō-ku, Fukuoka, Japan. It is also known as Maizuru Castle or Seki Castle . Completed in the early Edo period for tozama daimyo Kuroda Nagamasa, it has been decreed a historic site by the Japanese government. The castle lies in the centre of Fukuoka, on top of Fukusaki hill. The Naka River, Naka-gawa in Japanese, acts as a natural moat on the eastern side of the castle, while the western side uses a mudflat as a natural moat. Hakata, a ward with a bustling port, is located on the opposite side of the Naka River to the east. The castle town was established on the northern side, facing the sea. Much of the castle grounds has been converted to Maizuru Park, which houses several sports facilities, a courthouse, and an art museum. Heiwadai Baseball Stadium, the past home field of the Nishitetsu Lions and the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks, was also located on the castle grounds. Some of the castles gates as well as its towers and turrets, known as yaguras, are preserved inside the park, one of which has been marked as an important historical artifact by the Japanese government. The remnants of a korokan, an ancient guest house for foreign diplomats, were discovered under the castle grounds in 1987, showing that the castle was a vital geographical checkpoint even into the Heian period. This is the only korokan remnant found in all of Japan.

Hobashira Cable

The Hobashira Cable is the name of Japanese funicular line, as well as its operator. The line climbs Mount Sarakura in Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka. The line does not have any official name. It opened in 1957. The company also operates Sarakurayama Slope Car (皿倉山スロープカー, Sarakurayama Surōpukā). It links the funicular terminus and the top of the mountain.

Hakata Port Tower

Hakata Port Tower is a 103 metre high lattice tower with an observation deck in a height of 73.5 metres in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, Japan. Hakata Port Tower was built in 1964.

Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden

The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden, also known as the Fukuoka City Zoological Garden, is a zoo and botanical garden established in 1953 and located within Minami-koen park at 1-1, Minami-Koen, Chūō-ku, Fukuoka, Fukuoka, Japan. The garden contains about 1,300 types of outdoor garden plants, mostly common. Its greenhouse contains over 1,200 plant species including orchids, ferns, and cacti.

Wakato Bridge

The Wakato Bridge, is a suspension bridge in Kitakyūshū, Fukuoka, Japan. Opened on September 26, 1962, it has a 367-meter main span and is two kilometers long. The name of the bridge comes from the characters of the Kitakyūshū wards of Wakamatsu and Tobata that the bridge connects across Dokai Bay.

Dazaifu Tenman-gū

Dazaifu Tenman-gū is a Shinto shrine in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane and is one of the main shrines dedicated to Tenjin, the deified form of Michizane. The shrines precinct spans over 3,000 acres and includes several structures. Its honden, or main shrine, was first built by Yasuyuki Umasake in 905, two years after the death of Michizane. A larger structure was constructed by the Fujiwara clan in 919 but was destroyed in a fire during a civil war. The Momoyama-style shrine visitors see today dates from 1591 and is an Important Cultural Property. The grounds also contain two ponds, a bridge and a treasure house. As well as the main shrine dedicated to Tenjin there are auxiliary and branch shrines of many other kami. The auxiliary shrine honden is an Important Cultural Property. The shrine is also known for its 6,000 ume trees belonging to 167 varieties. One tree, known as Tobiume, stands directly to the right of the honden. Legend has it that after Michizane left Kyoto in exile, he yearned so much for this tree that it uprooted itself and flew to Dazaifu Tenman-gū.

Fukuoka Art Museum is an art museum in Fukuoka, Japan. It contains a notable collection of Asian art and exhibits various temporary exhibitions. In November 2010 it hosted a large exhibition of Marc Chagall's work. The Madonna of Port Lligat by Salvador Dalí is exhibited at this museum.

Nakasu

Nakasu is the red-light district which exists between the sandbank of the Naka River and the Hakata River in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is named after a popular, but very short-lived, entertainment quarter of Edo, which existed in the late 18th century. The name "Nakasu" can be translated as "the island in the middle" as Nakasu is an island between two rivers.

Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art opened in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1985. The collection focuses upon artists from Fukuoka Prefecture and Kyūshū more generally, and includes works by Koga Harue. The Museum's precursor, the Fukuoka Prefectural Cultural Hall , which combined art museum with library, opened on 3 November 1964.

The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art is located in Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Designed by Arata Isozaki, it sits on a hill straddling the three wards of Kokura Kita, Tobata, and Yahata Higashi. The museum houses more than 6,000 pieces of art, as well as offering various exhibitions throughout the year. The surrounding park not only offers a pleasant view over Tobata but is also a peaceful oasis with artwork in the form of sculptures scattered throughout. There is a branch of the museum in Riverwalk Kitakyushu.

Fukuoka City Museum

Fukuoka City Museum (福岡市博物館, Fukuoka-shi hakubutsukan) opened in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1990. The permanent exhibition, which tells the history of Fukuoka, is arranged in eleven sections, including those focussing upon the King of Na gold seal (National Treasure), the Kuroda clan, and the Hakata Gion Yamakasa.

Fukuoka Japan Temple

The Fukuoka Japan Temple is the 88th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . The temple serves more than 7,700 members in Kyūshū, Okinawa, Yamaguchi, Hiroshima and Shikoku Plans to build a temple in Fukuoka were announced on May 7, 1998. It is the second temple in Japan, the first being dedicated in Tokyo in 1980. Its 1.25-acre site in Chūō-ku is adjacent to the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and is also the location of a mission home and offices for the LDS Church. The temple has a single-spire design and the exterior is finished with polished Empress White and Majestic Grey granite from China, very similar to the Snowflake Arizona Temple. A site dedication and a groundbreaking ceremony for the Fukuoka Japan Temple were held on March 20, 1999. L. Lionel Kendrick, a member of the Seventy and president of the Asia North Area, presided at the ceremony. The temple was open to the public for tours from June 1–3, 2000. Those who toured the 10,700-square-foot temple were able to see the Celestial room, two ordinance rooms, two sealing rooms and baptistery, and were able to learn more about Mormon beliefs. LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Fukuoka Japan Temple on June 11, 2000.

Ōnojō Castle Ruins

Ōno Fortress is located on Mount Shioji in the northern part of Dazaifu city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Construction began in 665 A.D. Construction began after the defeat of the combined Japanese and Baekje forces by the Tang/Silla alliance at the Battle of Baekgang in 663. Fearing an invasion from the continent, the Japanese Yamato court is thought to have ordered the construction of the fortification to help protect the Daizaifu government center. Today the ruins of about seventy buildings can be seen, including buildings once used for storehouses, temples, and kitchens. A wall surrounded this area, built partly of stone, partly of earth. Sections of the wall still exist. This area is a Special Historic Site

Kitakyūshū Quasi-National Park is a Quasi-National Park in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was founded on 16 October 1972 and has an area of 82.49 km2 .

Gorōyama kofun

Gorōyama kofun is one of the many painted kofun or burial mounds in northern Kyushu, Japan. Located in Chikushino City in Fukuoka Prefecture, the circular burial mound, with a diameter of thirty-metres, was discovered in 1947. Two years later it was designated an Historic Site. The Gorōyama Kofun Museum exhibits replicas of the paintings and has an observation room with a view into the mound. Most of the paintings, in red, green, and black, are to be found on the rear wall of the burial chamber within the tomb and include concentric circles, human figures, boats, birds, horses, and a building. Many objects were discovered during excavations, including swords, iron arrowheads, horse fittings, jewelry, haji ware and Sue ware. The tomb is dated to c. 550-600.

Kanzeon-ji

Kanzeon-ji is a seventh-century Buddhist temple in Dazaifu, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was once the most important temple in Kyushu. Its bell, one of the oldest in the country, has been designated a National Treasure, and in 1996 the Ministry of the Environment designated its sound as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan. Many statues of the Heian period are Important Cultural Properties.

Kiyomizu-dera

Kiyomizu-dera is a Tendai temple in Miyama, Fukuoka, Japan. Its honorary sangō prefix is Motoyoshizan . According to legend, Kiyomizu-dera was founded in the Heian period by Saichō, who went to China in 804 and 805, mastered Tendai Buddhism, and returned to Japan in 806. After he returned to Japan, he was guided to Mount Kiyomizu by a bird and found nemu trees in the mountain. He cropped them and created a pair of Bodhisattva Kannon statues, enshrining one in Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. The remaining Buddha is enshrined in this temple. The sanmon main gate was built in 1745 by Yanagawa Domain Sadanori Tachibana. A three-story pagoda, a replica of the five-story pagoda Shitennō-ji Temple in Osaka, was originally built in 1836. The present pagoda was rebuilt in 1984. Both have been designated Prefectural Cultural Properties.

Kamado-jinja

Kamado-jinja is a Shinto shrine located in Dazaifu, Fukuoka prefecture, Japan. Located at the top of Mount Hōman, which has been venerated from ancient times as a sacred mountain, the shrine is dedicated to Tamayori-bime, Emperor Ōjin, and Empress Jingū. The peripheral zone of Mount Hōman, including the shrine, is a National historic site. It was formerly an imperial shrine of the first rank in the Modern system of ranked Shinto Shrines.

Fukuoka Mosque

The Fukuoka Masjid Al Nour Islamic Culture Center is the first mosque on the island of Kyūshū in Japan. It was built in 2009, and officially opened on 12 April 2009. Fukuoka Mosque aims to serve about 1,000 Muslims in Fukuoka Prefecture, as well to serve people in Japan interested in Islam. It arranges daily prayers, Friday prayers, Eid prayers on regular basis. It occasionally, arranges program for conversion into Islam, Muslim marriage, and funeral prayers. Fukuoka Masjid is open for any non-Muslims as well. Non-Muslims can enter the mosque to watch prayers, discuss with others various Islamic and cultural issues, and collect introductory booklets on Islam. They are also allowed to attend Muslim prayers, if they wish. The cultural wing of the mosque offers weekend Arabic language lessons for kids, women and men, cooking classes once every three months. It also arranges seminars and dialogue sessions occasionally. Kyushu University Muslim Student Association initiated the idea of building a mosque in 1998, and started collecting donations. In 2006, land was purchased, and construction plan was started. After a series of discussions with neighbors, the construction was started in 2008, and it took almost one year to finish. The first floor is mainly set for the mens prayer room, the second floor is the womens prayer room. On the basement level, there is a multi-purpose hall, a library, and a kitchen. The third floor has classrooms and a kitchen. It is located in Hakozaki, Higashi-ku in the city of Fukuoka, just a one-minute walk from the west exit of JR Hakozaki Station.

Chikugogawa Prefectural Natural Park

Chikugogawa Prefectural Natural Park is a Prefectural Natural Park in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1950, the park spans the municipalities of Kama, Asakura, Kurume, Ukiha, Yame, and Tachiarai. The park derives its name from the Chikugo River.

Ōhori Park

Ōhori Park is a park in Chūō-ku, Fukuoka, Japan and a registered Place of Scenic Beauty. The name Ōhori means a large moat and it derives from the fact that Kuroda Nagamasa, the old lord of Fukuoka, reclaimed the northern half of a cove or an inlet called Kusagae which was facing Hakata Bay and made a moat for the Fukuoka Castle. At the same time the Hii River, which was flowing into the cove, was diverted from its course to the west. The present park was reconstructed by Fukuoka City, modeled on the West Lake of China, and opened in 1929. This park is one of the most beautiful water parks in Japan and loved by local people as a relaxation spot. A fireworks festival is held here every August. The Fukuoka Art Museum and the United States Consulate are nearby.

Fukuoka Dome

The Fukuoka Yafuoku! Dome is a baseball field, located in Chūō-ku, Fukuoka, Japan. Built in 1993, the stadium was originally named Fukuoka Dome and can accommodate 38,561 spectators. It was Japan's first stadium with a retractable roof. In 2005, Yahoo! JAPAN, one of SoftBank's subsidiaries, acquired the stadium's naming rights, and thus renamed it Fukuoka Yahoo! JAPAN Dome or abbreviated as Yahoo Dome , In January 2013, it was renamed to Fukuoka Yafuoku! Dome (福岡ヤフオク!ドーム, Fukuoka Yafuoku Dōmu). Yafuoku means Yahoo! Auctions in Japan. Fukuoka Dome is the home stadium of Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks and, together with Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk Hotel and Hawks Town Mall, is part of the Hawks Town entertainment complex. It is located near Momochi Beach, about 15 minutes walk from Tojinmachi subway station. In 2006, the stadium received an upgrade to its mono-color main scoreboard "Hawks Vision." Sharing the same nickname as its predecessor and measured at 9.9840 m high and 52.992 m wide, it was one of the largest high-definition electronic scoreboards at the time, equivalent to a 2,123-inch wide-screen display. In 2010, with further addition of two 5.7 m x 33 m displays, the stadium boasted the largest total viewing area of HD display in all baseball stadia (total area 905.2sqm or 9,743.49sqft). The Fukuoka Dome has hosted one game in each Major League Baseball Japan All-Star Series since its creation, including the final game of the 2006 series, where Japan was swept for the first time in the history of the event. In the TV series Extreme Engineering, Danny Forster makes a reference to the Fukuoka Dome, saying it was said to have a "floating" field. In 2009, the AstroTurf field was replaced with the now more common FieldTurf brand surface to reduce injuries; the Hawks players had seen far more injuries than any other team in Japan. In the giant monster movie "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe", the stadium's retractable roof was used to trap the pterodactyl-like monsters Gyaos.

Higashi-Hirao Park Hakata-no-Mori Stadium

Level-5 Stadium (formerly Hakatanomori Football Stadium, renamed on March 1, 2008 for naming rights), located in the Hakata ward of Fukuoka city is the home ground of Avispa Fukuoka association football club. The stadium also hosts rugby union matches, including a few international matches, Top League games, Top League Challenge series and Top Kyushu league games. It was also host to four games in the IRB Junior World Championship 2009, including the 7th place play-off and 5th place play-off on July 21, 2009. The stadium has been announced as one of the venues for 2019 Rugby World Cup which will be the first Rugby World Cup to be held in Asia. The stadium's seating capacity is 22,563. It is located in Higashi Hirao Koen (park), 15-20 minutes walk or a short bus ride from Fukuoka Airport, and is named after the game software company.
