Florianópolis

Florianópolis is the capital city and second largest city of the state of Santa Catarina, in the South region of Brazil. It is composed of one main island, the Island of Santa Catarina , a continental part and the surrounding small islands. It has a population of 461,524, according to the 2014 IBGE population estimate, the second most populous city in the state , and the 47th in Brazil. The metropolitan area has an estimated population of 1,111,702, the 21st largest in the country. The city is known for having a very high quality of life, ranked as the country's third highest Human Development Index score among all Brazilian cities . The economy of Florianópolis is heavily based on information technology, tourism and services. The city has 42 beaches and is a center of surfing activity. Lagoa da Conceição is the most famous area for tourism, recreation, nature and radical sports. The New York Times reported that "Florianopolis is the Party Destination of the Year in 2009." Newsweek placed Florianópolis in the "Ten most dynamic cities of the world" list in 2006. Veja, a Brazilian publication, named the city as "the best place to live in Brazil." As a result of this exposure, Florianópolis is growing as a second home destination for many Paulistas, Argentines, North Americans, and Europeans. Most of the population lives on the mainland and on the island's central and northern parts. The southern half is less inhabited. Many small commercial fishermen populate the island. The fishing boats, the lacemakers, the folklore, the cuisine and the colonial architecture contribute to the growing tourism and attracts resources that compensate for the lack of any large industry. Villages immersed in tradition and history, such as Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Ribeirão da Ilha still resist the advances of modernity. The Hercílio Luz International Airport serves the city. Florianópolis is home to the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Federal University of Santa Catarina). There are also the Santa Catarina Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology (Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina), and two campuses of the Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina (State University of Santa Catarina), amongst other institutions of higher and professional education.

Beto Carrero World

Beto Carrero World is the biggest theme park in Latin America, located in Penha, Brazil. The park opened in December 28, 1991 and is considered the sixth best amusement park in the world, with a complex of fourteen kilometers divided into nine theme areas.

Morro da Igreja

Morro da Igreja is a peak situated in Urubici, a municipality of the Santa Catarina state, in southern Brazil. Its latitude is 28º07'31" S and its longitude is 49º29'38" W, with an elevation of 1,822 metres , the highest inhabited point and the second most elevated of this state. This peak registered the lowest temperature in Brazil: 17.8 °C , on June 29, 1996. It is considered the coldest place in this country; tourism is popular in the winter, when snowfalls can occur. The Brazilian Air Force has a military base on the summit equipped with radars and radio relays for air traffic control of the Brazilian Southern Region. There is a curious natural formation in this area, called Pedra Furada (literally Drilled Stone), and it can be spotted from the peak.

Hercílio Luz International Airport

Florianópolis-Hercílio Luz International Airport , is the airport serving Florianópolis, Brazil. It is named after Hercílio Pedro da Luz , three times governor of Santa Catarina and senator. It is operated by Infraero. Some of its facilities are shared with the Florianópolis Air Force Base of the Brazilian Air Force.

Aparados da Serra National Park

The Aparados da Serra National Park is located in the Serra Geral range of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states in the south of Brazil, between 29º07’—29º15’ S and 50º01’—50º10’ W. It has been created in 1959 as one of Brazils first national parks, to protect the Itaimbezinho canyon. It extends over an area of 10,250 hectares.

Hercilio Luz Bridge

Located in Florianopolis, the capital city of Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil, the Hercilio Luz Bridge is the first bridge constructed to link the Island of Santa Catarina to the mainland. It is the longest suspension bridge in Brazil. The central span was considered quite long at the time of its opening and is still one of the 100 largest suspension bridges. Construction commenced on 14 November 1922 with the bridge being inaugurated on May 13, 1926. The total length is 819.471 metres, with 259 metres of viaduct from the island, a central span of 339.471 metres and 221 metres of viaduct from the mainland. The steel structure weighs approximately weight five thousand tons, and the foundations and pillars consumed 14.250m³ of concrete. The two towers rise 74 metres from sea level, and the central span is 43 metres tall. It has been closed to the public since May 13, 1991.

Itaimbezinho

The Itaimbezinho is a canyon in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, about 170 km from Porto Alegre, near the border of the state of Santa Catarina. It is part of the Aparados da Serra National Park.

Campeche

Campeche is a beach located on the south of the city of Florianópolis, on the south of Brazil. There used to be a proper airport which was inaugurated in 1927 by the French Compagnie générale aéropostale. Aéropostales planes used to land on it. It is plausible that the famous French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of the classic The Little Prince, would have made a few landings on the area after the death of the pilot Élysée Négrin in 1930, while he was in charge of controlling the flights of Aeroposta Argentina. There are many houses to rent as well as pousadas, bars and simple restaurants. From any point along its 11.5 kilometres length, the island of Campeche can be seen.

Mole Beach

Mole Beach is located in the city of Florianópolis, Brazil. The beach extends 960 metres and the width varies from 10 m to 120 m. It is one of the many LGBT touristic spots of Florianópolis. Mole beach is also known for its strong and long waves making it ideal for surfing. The beach is also a traditional point for the youth of this island. The beach is frequented by surfers and gliders who use the hillside in the south as a slope for take-off. Normal length of the wave varies from 50 m to 150 m which fast and powerful coming from both left and right direction. The direction of wind is usually west, northwest and southwest. The swell direction is east, north, south and northeast. The wave swells from 1 metre to as high as 2.5 m. The tides are rising and falling having low and mid-tide position.

Vargeão Dome

Vargeão Dome is a meteorite crater in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, straddling the municipalities of Vargeão, Faxinal dos Guedes, and Passos Maia. The crater is an almost perfectly circular depression with steep walls, 12 km in diameter and up to 225 m deep relative to its rim. It is of Early Cretaceous age. The meteorite impacted on the basaltic rocks of the Serra Geral Formation . The crater displays several concentric rings and radial faults, and an eroded central bulge. The latter consists of impact breccias and sandstones from the Botucatu/Pirambóia Formation, which have been displaced about 700 m above their mean depth in the surrounding area. At least four post-impact lava flows have been identified between the rim and core. The impact origin of the structure is attested by the presence of shatter cones and shocked quartz grains.

Arena Joinville

Arena Joinville is a multi-use stadium located in Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil. It hosts football matches as well as Brazilian and international shows. The stadium is used mainly for football matches and hosts the home matches of Joinville Esporte Clube. It is located at Bucarein neighborhood, near Boa Vista and Guanabara neighborhoods. Arena Joinville is one of the Brazil's most modern football stadiums, and its design is inspired by European football arenas, such as the Amsterdam ArenA. The stadium is owned by the Joinville City Hall.

Oktoberfest of Blumenau

The Oktoberfest of Blumenau is a festival of Germanic traditions that happens in middle October in the city of Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. It is considered the biggest German festival of all Americas, and the one of the biggest Oktoberfest celebration along with the Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest and after the original Oktoberfest from Munich. It takes place at Parque Vila Germânica , located in the Bairro da Velha (District of the Old Woman), and lasts for 17 days.

Joinville

Joinville is the largest city in Santa Catarina State, in the Southern Region of Brazil. It is the third largest municipality in the southern region of Brazil, after the much larger state capitals of Curitiba and Porto Alegre. Joinville is also a major industrial, financial and commerce center. In 2014, the population of Joinville reached approximately 560,000 people, many of whom are of German descent. The metropolitan area is home to 1,212,997 residents according to the 2010 census by IBGE. Owing to urban development and relatively good infrastructure, Joinville has become a major center for events and business conferences. The city has one of the highest standards of living in Latin America.

Arena Jaraguá

Arena Jaraguá is an indoor sporting arena located in Jaraguá do Sul, Brazil. It is used mainly for futsal and volleyball. The capacity of the arena is 15,000 people and it was built in 2007. Malwee/Jaraguá plays its home matches at the stadium. UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Rockhold took place at the arena on May 18, 2013.

Santa Catarina Island

Santa Catarina Island is an island in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, located off the southern coast. It is approximately 54 km long by 18 km wide, measuring east-west at its widest point (in the north of the island), with a total area of 424.4 km² (163.9 mi²). It is home to the state capital, Florianópolis, and is connected to the mainland by three bridges, two of which are currently in operation. The island also contains numerous beach resorts, including: Jurerê Intenacional, Santinho, Canasvieiras and Cachoeira do Bom Jesus.

Praia dos Ingleses

Praia dos Ingleses is a beach located in the neighborhood of Ingleses do Rio Vermelho, in the north of the Santa Catarina Island 31 km from the Centro downtown district of Florianópolis the capital of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The beach is 4.83 km long, open ocean, blue warm water, the right side of the beach has calm water ideal for taking children and the elderly and on the other side, the waves are strong and conducive to surfing, bodyboarding and Standup paddleboarding. And a lot of sand where sandboarding is practiced by people of all ages on the beachs dunes. Boating tours are also conducted. Praia dos Ingleses is one of the busiest destinations on the island year round. In the summer it is the resort with the second largest concentration of Argentine tourists, second only to Canasvieiras. The area has grown and has become a major tourist center, with great infrastructure . It is also the residential beach area, where the largest number of residents who exceed 10,000. Today, many even say that Ingleses is a city and not a neighborhood. North of Praia dos Ingleses, is Praia Brava, and south, Praia do Santinho, also in Ingleses do Rio Vermelho district. Praia dos Ingleses means Beach of the English in Portuguese. The beachs name is due to an English ship that ran aground there. There are two theories about the ships fate. The first says that she floated and went her way, leaving some of the crew on the island. The other says that she sank.

It is known for having strong Azorian culture due to the immigration in the 19th century. The seat of the district is Santo Antônio de Lisboa. Canasvieiras

Canasvieiras is a neighbourhood and beach located in southern Brazil, approximately 27 kilometres north-east of the city of Florianópolis on the northern part of Santa Catarina island. Nearby beaches include Jurerê and Cachoeira do Bom Jesus. The population is 10,129, and the area is 29.0 km² One account suggests the area is named after Mr Vieira who owned a sugar cane plantation in the town, but historically it is more likely that it was named for a variety of cane cultivated in the region, known in Portuguese as "cana-viera". A 1786 map identifies the beach as "Praia Cana Vieiras". During the summer Canasvieiras is popular with tourists, specially those from Argentina but also those from Chile and Uruguay, because of the calm seas and the nightlife. The area has accommodation, bathhouses and shops and a police station and health clinic.

Barra Velha

Barra Velha is a resort town and county seat of about 20,000 inhabitants in the Northern region of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Its nine beaches extend from the Rio Itapocu in the North to the resort town of Piçarras on its Southern border. Additionally, it is the only resort in the area to have a freshwater lake separated from the ocean by an old sand bar, from which it derives its name. Located between Joinville and Itajaí on BR-101, the principal North-South highway in Southern Brazil, it is an important resort destination for residents of the industrial region to the North and West of the State, with summer weekend population exceeding 100,000. Settled initially by Azorian whale fishermen in 1812, it retains its fishing village characteristics with boats drawn up onto the beach and the daily catch sold directly from them by the fishermen every morning. In the center of downtown a hill rises sharply from the beach which provides a spectacular view of the lake and town center. A replica of the famous statute of Christ on Corcovado rises from the summit. Barra Velha is home of the annual "Festa Nacional do Pirão", a festival celebrating the Azorian dish "Pirão" having a sauce-like consistency and normally made from fish or shellfish. Held in early September, it attracts over 30,000 visitors annually.

Balneário Camboriú

Balneário Camboriú is a major beach resort in the Brazilian southern state of Santa Catarina. The town, with its steep hills dropping down to the sea, is popular amongst South Americans. The main ocean boulevard is called Avenida Atlântica . Balneário Camboriú is famous for the cable car which links the city's central beach and the beach of Laranjeiras. The town is located 10 km south of the city of Itajaí, 96 km south of the city of Joinville, and 80 km north of the state capital, Florianópolis. The city has a population of 124,557 (2014 census office estimate), which swells to over one million in the summer. In a story published in late February 2012 by Forbes magazine, about the ascent of electronic music in Brazil, Balneário Camboriú was presented as "the capital of e-music" in the country. According to Forbes, Balneário Camboriú is the home to the two best clubs in Brazil, the Warung club and the Green Valley club, which the publication claims to make up to $1.6 million per night. On 2012, the famous nightclub Space opened an affiliate in the city, the Space B. Camboriú. The city is also known by the nickname "Brazilian Dubai", due to its high number of skyscrapers and affluent tourists. The city is served by Ministro Victor Konder International Airport located in the adjoining municipality of Navegantes. Nobody knows for sure what the city’s name means, but the most acceptable explanation, according to the city's archives, is “River filled with Robalo”, which is a very common type of fish in this region. Ilha das Cabras (Goats' Island) is directly opposite the city and is too small for inhabitation but is lit at night. Sailings to nearby Laranjeiras Beach take place aboard 17th century-style pirate ships, going around the island before returning to Balneário Camboriú again. The city also has a statue similar to the Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) in Rio de Janeiro, called Cristo Luz, but the one in Balneário Camboriú has small differences: it is a little smaller than Redeemer and it portrays Jesus with a "broad-brimmed hat" like circle on his left shoulder, simbolizing the Sun, which houses a spotlight that shines out to the entire city. The Cristo Luz is lit at night, also having colorful lights in its body that changes periodically. Another common sight in the city are paragliders over the beach, alongside the tall buildings, from the gliderport in nearby Praia dos Amores, located 1 km (0.6 mi) to the north of the city. To the west the city is bordered by the Camboriú River, which meets the ocean at the southernmost limit of the central portion of the city, where the cable car (teleférico) mentioned above is located.

Campos Novos Dam

The Campos Novos Dam (also known as Barragem de Campos Novos locally) is a hydroelectric dam in the Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. In 2006, at 200 metres (660 ft) dam height, it was regarded as the third highest dam of this type (concrete-faced rock fill dam or CFRD) in the world, but, in June 2006, the water which it held back ran out following a break in the dam wall. Built at a cost of $671 million USD, it is located on the Canoas River, Brazil. It is part of a hydro-electric complex intended to provide 880 MW (1,180,000 hp). A second dam is below this one, and together they can hold a little more than 2 cubic kilometers of water.

UDESC is located in Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil, primarily in Florianópolis and Joinville, but it has multiple campuses in 10 cities. According to its official website, it has over 13,000 students. It is regarded as one of the best state Universities in Brazil.

Federal University of Santa Catarina

The Federal University of Santa Catarina is a public university in Florianópolis, the capital city of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil. Ranked as the 4th best overall university in Latin America by the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, it is one of the leading Latin American research universities, being the third largest university in Brazil and the fifth in Latin America, noted for its engineering school, and the only Federal University in the state of Santa Catarina. UFSC is internationally known for the quality of its courses in mechanical engineering, control engineering, sanitary engineering, electrical engineering and dentistry. The organization of its campus is done in the 11 Centers of Education , divided by field of study. Every Center of Education is divided in departments, the largest one being the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The oldest is the Center of Juridic Sciences, that is itself the department of Law, which was the first of UFSC's departments to be officially recognized in 1932.

Santa Catarina Art Museum

The Museu de Arte de Santa Catarina, was created in 1949 as Museu de Arte Moderna de Florianópolis, and, since then, is the official institution for fine arts in Santa Catarina.
