Top Attractions in Leuven

Heverlee

Heverlee is a town in Belgium. It is a deelgemeente of the city of Leuven. Heverlee is bordered by Herent, Bertem, Oud Heverlee and several other municipalities that are part of Leuven (including Leuven proper and Kessel-Lo). The town is the location of the Heverlee War Cemetery for Commonwealth casualties from the Second World War. The town also harbours a significant part of the university campus of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. The Arenberg campus is the main area for research and educational facilities for exact sciences (The Science, Engineering and Technology Group). These contain the Faculty of Engineering (see Arenberg Château, the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering and the Faculty of Science. A part of the Biomedical Group, namely the Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences also has its main facilities on the campus. Another higher education facility has some facilities in Heverlee. The Katholieke Hogeschool Leuven lies next to the Heilig Hart-Instituut, which is a school for secondary education. Also, St John Berchmans University College, Heverlee is situated outside the centre. Also situated in Heverlee is the Den Dreef stadium, home of the Belgian 1st Division football team Oud-Heverlee Leuven. The Cyclocross Leuven is a cyclo-cross race held in January. Heverlee also has industrial parks with all kinds of companies, some of which are affiliated (as spin-offs) with the university and its research. IMEC, Thrombogenics and Option N.V. are some of the most important ones. The Brabanthal is a large hall, mostly for recreational events.

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven

The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Dutch pronunciation: [katoˈlikə univɛrsiˈtɛit ˈløːvə(n)], listen Dutch for Catholic University of Leuven, but usually not translated into English), also known as KU Leuven or University of Leuven, is a Dutch-speaking university in Leuven, Flanders, Belgium. The University of Leuven was founded at the centre of the historic town of Leuven in 1425, making it Belgium's first university. After being closed in 1797 during the Napoleonic period, the Catholic University of Leuven was "re-founded" in 1834, and is frequently, but controversially, identified as a continuation of the older institution.A In 1968 the Catholic University of Leuven split into the Dutch-language Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the French-language Université catholique de Louvain, which moved to Louvain-la-Neuve in Wallonia. Since the fifteenth century, Louvain, as it is still often called, has been a major contributor to the development of Catholic theology. It is considered the oldest Catholic university still in existence. With 55,484 students in 2014-2015, the KU Leuven is the largest university in Belgium and the Low Countries. In addition to its primary campus in Leuven, it has satellite campuses in Kortrijk ('KULAK'), Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Geel, Diepenbeek, Aalst, Sint-Katelijne-Waver and in Belgium's capital Brussels. The university now also offers several programs in English. As of 2015-2016 academic year, KU Leuven ranks as 35th globally according to Times Higher Education, 82nd according to QS World University Rankings and 90th according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities. KU Leuven is consistently considered to be within the top 100 universities of the world and in contention with Ghent University as the best Belgian university.

Kessel-Lo

Kessel-Lo is a town in Belgium. It is a borough of Leuven North of Leuven proper. Kessel-Lo is bordered by Holsbeek, Lubbeek, and several other municipalities that are part of Leuven (including Leuven proper, Heverlee, and Wijgmaal). Its name is derived from "Kessel" (from the Latin "Castellum" for fortress, referring to a fortress that once stood on the kesselmountain) and "Lo" (forest clearing). Kessel-Lo is home to the Provinciaal Domein Kessel-Lo, a large provincial park with ponds, playgrounds, soccer fields, and other areas for recreational activities. The town is also known for Vlierbeek Abbey, an old Benedictine abbey built in 1125. Several youth organisations are present in Kessel-Lo, such as Chiro Don Bosco, Chiro Vlierbeek, Scouts Vlierbeek, Chiro Blauwput, Chiro Hekeko, Scouts De Vlievleger and Scouts Boven-lo. A local brewery has recently been founded called "De Vlier". They brew a blond beer called "Kessel's Blond". Kessel-Lo is also the proud home of the Rugby Club Leuven.

Den Dreef

Stadium Den Dreef is a football stadium situated on Kardinaal Mercierlaan in the Heverlee suburb of Leuven in Belgium. It is home to Belgian Pro League football team Oud-Heverlee Leuven. The entrance for visiting spectators is on Tervuursevest. There is a two tier main stand on the southern end of the stadium. Originally both tiers of the stand ran approximately two-thirds of the length of the pitch. In the summer of 2011 the lower tier was extended to run the whole length of the pitch, increasing the capacity of the stadium to 8,519 in preparation for the larger attendances expected following Oud-Heverlee Leuven's promotion to the 1st division in season 2010-11. In the summer of 2012 the upper tier of the main stand was also extended, further increasing the stadium capacity to its current 9,493 and adding extra space to its corporate entertainment and conference facilities. There are two smaller single tier stands behind each goal, the one behind the goal to the west normally being reserved for visiting supporters. In addition there is covered standing terracing that runs the length of the pitch opposite the main stand.
