Knorr Hut

The Knorr Hut is a mountain hut belonging to the German Alpine Club and located in the Wetterstein Mountains at a height of 2,052 m. Its lies right on the edge of the Zugspitzplatt where it drops into the Reintalanger in a location with scenic views and is an important base for hikers who can climb up to it on the normal route from the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen through the Reintal valley to Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze. The Knorr Hut is rated as category I, and belongs to the Munich Section of the German Alpine Club .

Hochwanner

At 2,744 metres , the Hochwanner is the second highest mountain in Germany after the Zugspitze (if the somewhat higher Schneefernerkopf is only considered as a sub-peak of the Zugspitze). In addition the Hochwanner is the highest peak on the main ridge of the Wetterstein running from Gatterl to the Upper Wettersteinspitze above Mittenwald in an east-west direction. From the Hochwanner massif there is an all-round view of the Rein valley (Reintal), the Leutasch valley in Austria, the Gais valley, the Zugspitze, the Mieming Chain, the Jubiläumsgrat, the Karwendel mountains and far into the central Alps. Despite being the second highest peak in Germany and having a north face which drops about 1500 m the Hochwanner has remained a relatively unknown mountain. This is due to its relatively inaccessible location, behind the Alpspitze and hidden by the Höllentalspitze. The more widely known, but lower Watzmann is often wrongly cited as the second highest mountain in Germany. The easiest route to the summit is from the south from the Rotmoosalm or from Gatterl. Pathless in places or only recognisable by a faint trail it initially runs up steep grass meadows, later over a short rock climb and then mainly over steep, laborious scree slopes to the summit. The route is sparingly marked with cairns. The north face is a very long climb. Hochwanner was first climbed by Hermann von Barth in 1870. Höllentalspitzen

The Höllentalspitzen are three peaks in the Wetterstein Mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen in southern Germany. They rise from the ridge of Blassenkamm which runs eastwards from Germany's highest peak, the Zugspitze, and separate the Hölle Valley to the north from the Reintal Valley to the south. The summit nearest to the Zugspitze is the Inner Höllentalspitze , 2,741 metres high; this is followed by the main summit Middle Höllentalspitze (Mittlere Höllentalspitze), 2,743 metres high; and the Outer Höllentalspitze at 2,720 metres (8,920 ft). The summits can only be climbed by experienced mountaineers. As a rule they are tackled by negotiating the ridge of the Jubiläumsgrat ("Jubilee Arête"). The Jubigrat, as it is known in mountaineering circles is the climbing route from the Zugspitze over the Höllentalspitzen and the Vollkarspitze to the Grießkarscharte and on to the Alpspitze, and requires firm mastery of the third grade of difficulty on the UIAA scale. This long crossing can only be interrupted by the equally difficult Brunntalgrat ridge, which branches off to the south near the summit of the Inner Höllentalspitze, and descends to the Knorr Hut in the Reintal Valley. Between the Middle and Outer Höllentalspitze is the mountain hut known as the Höllentalgrat Hut, a small, unmanaged bothy for emergencies.

Zugspitze

The Zugspitze, at 2,962 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Wetterstein Mountains as well as the highest mountain in Germany. It lies south of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the border between Germany and Austria runs over its western summit. South of the mountain is the Zugspitzplatt, a high karst plateau with numerous caves. On the flanks of the Zugspitze are three glaciers, including the two largest in Germany: the Northern Schneeferner with an area of 30.7 hectares and the Höllentalferner with an area of 24.7 hectares. The third is the Southern Schneeferner which covers 8.4 hectares. The Zugspitze was first climbed on 27 August 1820 by Josef Naus, his survey assistant, Maier, and mountain guide, Johann Georg Tauschl. Today there are three normal routes to the summit: one from the Höllental valley to the northeast; another out of the Reintal valley to the southeast; and the third from the west over the Austrian Cirque (Österreichische Schneekar). One of the best known ridge routes in the Eastern Alps runs along the knife-edged Jubilee Ridge to the summit, linking the Zugspitze, the Hochblassen and the Alpspitze. For mountaineers there is plenty of accommodation in the vicinity. On the western summit of the Zugspitze itself is the Münchner Haus and on the western slopes is the Wiener-Neustädter Hut. Three cable cars run to the top of the Zugspitze. The first, the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car, was built in 1926 and terminated on an arête below the summit before the terminus was moved to the actual summit in 1991. A rack railway, the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, runs inside the northern flank of the mountain and ends on the Zugspitzplatt, from where a second cable car takes passengers to the top. The rack railway and the Eibsee Cable Car, the third cableway, transport an average of 500,000 people to the summit each year. In winter, nine ski lifts cover the ski area on the Zugspitzplatt. The weather station, opened in 1900, and the research station in the Schneefernerhaus are mainly used to conduct climate research.

Werdenfels Castle

The ruins of Werdenfels Castle stand about 80 metres above the Loisach valley between Garmisch and Farchant in the county of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Upper Bavaria. The spur castle was used until 1632 as the administrative centre of the County of Werdenfels, but began to fall into disrepair thereafter. The castle ruins are freely accessible and are a popular hiking destination with a good view of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Wetterstein Mountains.

King's House on Schachen

The Kings House on Schachen is a small castle at Schachen, Wetterstein mountain massif, about 10 km south of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria, Germany, built by Ludwig II of Bavaria. The castle was constructed between 1869 and 1872. It can only be reached by a three to four hour hike, either from Elmau or Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and provides a view of Zugspitze.

Wetterstein

The Wetterstein mountains , also simply called the Wetterstein, is a mountain group in the Northern Limestone Alps within the Eastern Alps. It is a relatively compact range located between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mittenwald, Seefeld in Tirol and Ehrwald. Part of it is in the German free state of Bavaria and part in the Austrian federal state of Tyrol. The main summit of the Wetterstein, the Zugspitze, is also the highest mountain in Germany. The Wetterstein mountains are an ideal region for mountaineers and climbers. Mountain walkers sometimes need to allow for significant differences in elevation. The proximity of the range to the south German centres of population, the scenic landscape and its good network of cable cars and lifts mean that the mountains are heavily frequented by tourists for most of the year. There are, however, places in the Wetterstein that are rarely or never visited by people.

Partnach Gorge

The Partnach Gorge is a deep gorge that has been incised by a mountain stream, the Partnach, in the Reintal valley near the south German town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The gorge is 702 metres long and, in places, over 80 metres deep. It was designated a natural monument in 1912.

Schneeferner

The Schneeferner in the Bavarian Alps is Germanys highest and largest glacier. It is located on the Zugspitzplatt, a plateau south of the countrys highest peak, the Zugspitze, that descends from west to east and forms the head of the Reintal valley. The meltwaters from the glacier seep away into the karstified plateau and surface again in the Reintal, where they feed the River Partnach. The Schneeferner is one of the northernmost glaciers in the Alps.

Garmisch Classic

Garmisch Classic is an alpine ski resort in southern Germany, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavaria. In the Bavarian Alps, its maximum elevation is 2,050 m above sea level at Osterfelderkopf, with a vertical drop of 1,350 m . Other peaks are Kreuzjoch at 1,719 m and Kreuzeck at 1,651 m . The area hosted the World Championships in 2011 and 1978, and alpine skiing debuted at the Winter Olympics here in 1936. Run only as a combined event in 1936, the downhill portion was run at Garmisch Classic and the slalom was run at Gudiberg, adjacent to the ski jumps . Garmisch Classic is known for the classic Kandahar slope, descending from Kreuzjoch, where the speed events are held for the World Cup and World Championships. Skiing is also available above Garmisch Classic on the Zugspitzplatt, a glacial plateau below the summit of the Zugspitze, the highest point in Germany at 2,962 m . The lift-served summit for skiing is 2,720 m, descending to 2,000 m .

Wank

The Wank is a mountain in southern Germany, situated in the Loisach valley close to the Austrian border in the southwestern Ester Mountains range near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It rises from about 700 metres above mean sea level up to 1,780 metres at the summit. The mountain is crowned by a grassy summit which offers spectacular views over Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the surrounding region. The summit can be reached via the eponymous Wankbahn, a cable car system that runs during the summer months, or by an extensive network of footpaths that criss-cross the area. It is possible to both eat and sleep on the Wank at the Wank-Haus, a mountain hut on the summit, and a nearby scientific observatory plays an important role in monitoring atmospheric and climatic conditions. The Wank is a popular destination for hikers, day-trippers from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and paragliders, who are able to take advantage of its strong thermals to make exceptionally long flights.

Zugspitze Glacier Cable Car

The Zugspitze Glacier Cable Car is a 1,000 metre long cable car on the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. It was opened in 1992 and links the plateau of the Zugspitzplatt directly with the summit, 360 metres higher. Since the mountain station of the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway was moved from the Schneefernerhaus to the Platt, the Schneefernerhaus and the old cableways, which ran down into the valley from the Platt and up to the summit , have lost their importance. The cableway, which is operated by the Zugspitzbahn AG, is a reversible system with two carrying cables and no pylons. Its carrying cables have a diameter of 50 mm; its hauling cable a diameter of 34 mm. Drive is provided by 2 motors each of 210 kW in the valley station. The cabins of the Zugspitze Glacier cable car have a capacity of 100 people and can transport 1,000 people per hour in each direction. The cableway was built by the Southy Tyrolean firm of Hölzl Seilbahnbau.

Bischof

The Bischof is a mountain peak in the Bavarian Prealps of southern Germany. It lies in the westernmost part of the Bavarian Prealps in the Ester Mountains near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The usual climb to the top runs from Oberau via the Oberauer Steig to the saddle between the Bischof and the Hoher Fricken and on over the western ridge on good tracks through the Latschen to the summit (a total of about 3.5 hours climb).

Hochblassen

The Hochblassen is a mountain 2,706 metres high, located in the Wetterstein in the German state of Bavaria. In addition to the main summit, it has a sub-peak, the so-called Signalgipfel which is 2,698 metres high. It was first climbed in 1871 by Hermann von Barth and Peter Klaisl.

Schneefernerkopf

The Schneefernerkopf is a 2,875 metres high peak in the Zugspitze massif in the Alps. It lies at the western end of the Wetterstein chain in the Alps on the border between the German state of Bavaria and the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is the dominant mountain in the Wetterstein, especially when viewed from Ehrwald.

Hausberg Gondola Lift

The Hausberg Gondola Lift runs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen in South Germany up to the Hausberg mountain and the "Classic" ski area of Hausberg-Alpspitze. It belongs to the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn company and is only operated in winter. The old Hausberg cableway built by PHB went into service in 1969. It was a cable car with two cabins, each with a capacity of 70 people, and operated until the end of the 2005/06 winter season. For the 2006/07 winter season it was replaced by a gondola lift by Doppelmayr. It has a length of 2,036 metres and climbs a height of 606 metres . With its 66 cabins by CWA each for 8 people it has a transport capacity of 2,400 passengers an hour. The 50 mm thick carrying cable runs over 15 pylons. It is driven by an electric motor in the valley station and held at a constant tension by hydraulic tensioning apparatus in the valley station. The garage for the cabins is in the mountain station.

Garmisch Olympia Stadium

Garmisch Olympia Stadium is an arena in Garmisch, Germany. It is primarily used for ice hockey, and is the home arena of the SC Riessersee of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Garmisch Olympia Stadium opened in 1935 and holds 6,929 people. It also hosted Germany's single home game during the 1996 World Cup of Hockey. This arena also hosted some hockey and figure skating events at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Rockstar Eric Burdon will perform there in 2010.

Gudiberg

Gudiberg is a mountain of Bavaria, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. It hosted the slalom part of the alpine skiing combined event for the 1936 Winter Olympics in neighboring Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The slalom piste at Gudiberg was improved in preparation for the World Championships in 2011, and has hosted World Cup slalom events. The adjacent ski jumping hill Große Olympiaschanze is a regular stop on the World Cup tour, part of the Four Hills Tournament.

Kreuzeck

The Kreuzeck is a mountain in the Wetterstein mountain range of Bavaria, Germany with an elevation of 1,651 m above sea level. It is part of the present-day Garmisch Classic ski resort. The first ski area at Kreuzeck 1,340 m was developed for the 1936 Winter Olympics in neighboring Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the first Olympics to feature alpine skiing. The sole event was the combined, with one downhill run and two runs of slalom. The Kreuzeck valley base station served as finish line for the downhill, while the slalom was run at Gudiberg, adjacent to the ski jumping hill, Große Olympiaschanze. The Kreuzeck featured Germany's first Mountain Gondola which made the Kreuzeck range the alpine portal to the neighboring areas of the Kreuzjoch, the Alpspitze, and the Höllental and provided the infrastructure to host the downhill event for the 1936 Winter Olympics. The original Olympic course is still maintained and accessible. The current downhill course garnered notoriety as a designated "Kandahar" event and continues to host World Cup events in downhill, super G, and giant slalom. It hosted the World Championships in 1978 and 2011.

Edelweiss Vacation Village and Campground

The Edelweiss Vacation Village and Campground is a U.S. Department of Defense recreational facility that is a part of the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch, Germany. The Vacation Village and Campground consists of a collection of deluxe and rustic wood cabins located on Artillery Kaserne in Southern Garmisch, and a gravel campsite in the Loisach River Valley. The Tent and Gravel Campsites are closed from October to Mid-May, but the cabins are open all year round.

Münchner Haus

The Münchner Haus on Germanys highest mountain, the Zugspitze, is an Alpine Club hut belonging to the Munich Section of the German Alpine Club . The category 2 hut lies on the west summit of the Zugspitze at a height of 2,959 metres and is thus the highest refuge hut in the German Alps. The Münchner Haus is managed by Hansjörg Barth whose family have run the hut for three generations since 1925.

Reintalanger Hut

The Reintalanger Hut is an Alpine Club hut in the Wetterstein Mountains at the head of the Reintal valley. The River Partnach has its source in the vicinity. West of the hut the valley floor climbs steeply up to the plateau of the Zugspitzplatt below Germanys highest mountain. The hut belongs to the Munich section of the German Alpine Club and the administrative district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was built in 1912 and is a Category 1 hut. The house has over 90 bedspaces and is managed from the end of May to mid-October.

Schneefernerhaus

The Schneefernerhaus is a former hotel in the Alps, that is now used as an environmental research station. It lies immediately below the summit of the Zugspitze at a height of 2,650 m and was opened on 20 June 1931. It used to house the top station of the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway as well as a tourist hotel. There was then a cable car from the Schneefernerhaus to the Zugspitze summit. In 1938 a gallery for pedestrians was opened from the ridge station of the Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car to the Schneefernerhaus. From 1945 to 1952 the hotel was commandeered for use as a "recreation facility" by the US Forces. On 15 May 1965 an avalanche, that swept over the sun terasse of the hotel and the lifts on the Zugspitzplatt, claimed 10 lives and injured 21. This tragedy was the impetus behind the introduction of a state avalanche warning service and local avalanche commissions. In 1988, after the new station of the Zugspitze Railway was opened on the plateau and, in 1989, the SonnAlpin restaurant there was extended, the hotel and restaurant operation at the Schneefernerhaus finally closed on 14 January 1992. The trackage of the Zugspitze Railway is still there but is now only used to serve the research station.

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is a U.S. Department of Defense owned recreation hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Located in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border, the facility opened in September 2004 at a cost of $80 million. Edelweiss Lodge and Resort was built to replace a series of older Armed Forces Recreation Center hotels (such as the now-demolished General Walker Hotel in Obersalzberg). The hotel and its facilities are limited to only U.S. military members and Department of Defense employees stationed in Europe and foreign military members stationed at U.S. military installations and their family members. Riessersee

Riessersee is a German lake located in southwest Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The lake itself hosted the speed skating events and 10 of the 37 ice hockey games for the 1936 Winter Olympics. Adjacent to the lake, the bobsleigh events took place.

Olympia-Kunsteisstadion

The Olympia-Kunsteisstadion is a skating stadium located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It was built according to plans of architect Hanns Ostler in only 106 days for the figure skating and ice hockey at the 1936 Winter Olympics. It was opened on 16 December 1934. It contained an ice rink 30 meters by 60 meters for these games. It was a partially covered stadium. The stadium was able to hold 10,000 people. The Olympia-Kunsteistadion was rebuilt in 1939/1940 for the planned 1940 Winter Olympics which were canceled due to World War II. After the war it was reopened in 1948. the stadium received a complete roof in 1964. From 1990 to 1994 it was rebuilt again and is now the Olympic-Eissport-Zentrum of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Kramerspitz

Kramerspitz is a mountain overlooking the Garmisch side of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany. It forms the most visible western boundary of the Loisach River Valley. It stands across the valley from the Wank to the east on the Partenkirchen side.

Ester Mountains

The Ester Mountains are a small mountain range in Bavaria. They are classified either as part of Bavarian Prealps or the larger chain of Northern Limestone Alps.
