Tivoli

Tivoli City Park or simply Tivoli Park is the largest park in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It is located on the northern outskirts of the Center District, stretching to the Šiška District to the north, the Vič District to the south, and the Rožnik District to the west. Several notable buildings and art works stand in the park. Since 1984, the park has been protected as part of Tivoli–Rožnik Hill–Šiška Hill Nature Park. It is home to a variety of bird species.

The Slovenian Museum of Natural History is a Slovenian national museum with natural history, scientific, and educational contents. It is the oldest cultural and scientific Slovenian institution. The museum features national, European, and world wide collections demonstrating the changes in biodiversity, the development of the natural history thought, as well as different techniques of collection and preparation of samples. Its research activities focus on natural heritage of Slovenia. The Slovenian Museum of Natural History operates in the Center District in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, at Museum Street, near Tivoli Park, the Parliament and the Opera House. Along with the National Museum of Slovenia, it is housed in a building from 1885, built upon the plans by the Viennese architect Wilhelm Rezori and the master builder Wilhelm Treo from Ljubljana. The symbol of the museum is an almost complete woolly mammoth skeleton, found in Nevlje near Kamnik in 1938. Its official publication, published since autumn 1978, has been named Scopolia in honour of Giovanni Antonio Scopoli, a leading Carniolan naturalist of the 18th century.

Ljubljana Zoo

Ljubljana Zoo is a 19.6-hectare zoo in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It serves as the national zoo of Slovenia and is open year round. The zoo is situated on the southern slope of the Rožnik Hill, in a natural environment of woods and meadows about a 20-minute walk from the city center. The zoo is notable in that the city is at the intersection of the Alpine, Pannonian, Mediterranean, and Dinaric habitats and has 119 species and a total of 500 animals.

Ljubljana Botanical Garden

The Ljubljana Botanical Garden, officially the Botanical Gardens of the University of Ljubljana, is the central Slovenian botanical garden, the oldest botanical garden in Southeastern Europe, and one of the oldest cultural, scientific, and educational organisations in Slovenia. Its headquarters are located in the Rudnik District of Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, at Ig Street along the Gruber Canal to the southeast of the Castle Hill. The garden started operating under the leadership of Franc Hladnik in 1810, when Ljubljana was the capital of the Illyrian Provinces. It is thus an averagely old European botanical garden. The institution is a member of the international network Botanic Gardens Conservation International and cooperates with more than 270 botanical gardens all across the world. Of over 4,500 plant species and subspecies that grow on 2 hectares, roughly a third is endemic to Slovenia, whereas the rest originate from other European places and other continents.

National Gallery of Slovenia

The National Gallery of Slovenia is the national art gallery of Slovenia. It is located in the capital Ljubljana. The Slovenian National Gallery was founded in 1918, after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the establishment of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. Initially, it was hosted in the Kresija Palace of Ljubljana, but moved to the present location in 1925.

National Museum of Slovenia

Path of Remembrance and Comradeship

The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, also referred to as the Path along the Wire, the Path around Ljubljana, or the Green Ring, is a gravel-paved recreational and memorial walkway almost 33 km long and 4 m wide around the city of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The walkway leads past Koseze Pond and across Golovec Hill. During World War II the Province of Ljubljana, annexed by Fascist Italy, was subjected to brutal repression after the emergence of resistance and the Italian forces erected a barbed wire fence—the route of which is now the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship—around Ljubljana in order to prevent communication between the citys underground Liberation Front activists in Ljubljana and the Slovene Partisans in the surrounding countryside. The path was completed in 1985 and is marked by signposts, information boards with the map of the path, plaques, and metal markers, as well as signposts at the turn-offs. One hundred and two octagonal memorial stones, designed by the architect Vlasto Kopač, have been installed at the former positions of the bunkers. Along the green area adjacent to it, 7,400 trees of 49 tree species have been planted. Since 1988, it has been protected as a designed nature monument. The path is used by many residents of Ljubljana each day. The most popular form of recreation on it is walking and jogging. Cycling is also permitted on condition that pedestrians are not endangered. During snowy winters, cross-country ski tracks are provided at some of its sections. Each year since 1957, on the weekend closest to 9 May, the traditional recreational March along the Path around Ljubljana takes place to mark the liberation of Ljubljana on 9 May 1945. Those who walk the entire distance and collect stamps at all eight checkpoints receive a memorial badge and a medal.

Prešeren Monument

The Prešeren Monument in Ljubljana, also Prešeren Statue in Ljubljana, is a late Historicist bronze statue of the Slovene national poet France Prešeren in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It stands at the eastern side of Prešeren Square, in front of the Central Pharmacy in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It is among the best-known Slovenian monuments.

Ljubljana Cathedral

Ljubljana Cathedral, officially named St. Nicholass Church, also named St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, or simply the Cathedral, is a cathedral in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Originally, Ljubljana Cathedral was a Gothic church. In the early 18th century, it was replaced by a Baroque building. It is an easily recognizable landmark of the city with its green dome and twin towers and stands at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Square by the nearby Ljubljana Central Market and the Town Hall.

Ljubljana Castle funicular

The Ljubljana Castle Funicular is a funicular railway in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It goes from Krek Square near the Ljubljana Central Market to the Ljubljana Castle. The idea of having a funicular going to the castle dates back to 1897, when then mayor Ivan Hribar wrote to the Austro-Hungarian authorities asking for a lift that would go up to the castle. It was realised on 28 December 2006. The funicular is popular among tourists. It runs between the hours of 10:00 and 21:00 in wintertime, and the hours of 10:00 and 22:00 in summertime, and the full trip lasts 60 seconds.

Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle is a castle complex standing on Castle Hill above the downtown of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It is a key element of the Ljubljana skyline. Originally a Medieval fortress, probably built in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 12th century, it acquired its present outline with an almost complete overhaul in the 15th century, whereas the majority of the buildings date to the 16th and 17th centuries. At first a defense structure and since the first half of the 14th century the seat of the lords of Carniola, it was since the early 19th century used as a penitentiary, then in the first half of the 20th century as a residential complex and in the latest times as a tourist attraction and a major cultural venue.

Tivoli Castle

Tivoli Castle, originally called Podturn Manor, is a mansion in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. The mansion is located in the citys Tivoli Park, north-west of the city centre, at the foot of Rožnik hill. It is the terminus of the Jakopič Promenade, itself the continuation of Cankar Street. Built in the 17th century atop the ruins of a previous Renaissance-period castle, the mansion was initially owned by the Jesuits, but came into the possession of the Diocese of Ljubljana following the 1773 suppression of the Jesuit order. Used as the bishops summer residence, it was surrounded with orchards.

It is located at the corner of Prešeren Street Erjavec Street and Gregorčič Street in the Center District, next to the Cankar Hall. Ljubljana Town Hall

Ljubljana Town Hall is the town hall in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is the seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. It is located at Town Square in the city centre close to Ljubljana Cathedral. The original building was built in a Gothic style in 1484, probably according to plans by the Carniolan builder Peter Bezlaj. Between 1717 and 1719, the building underwent a Baroque renovation with a Venetian inspiration by the builder Gregor Maček, Sr., who built based on plans by the Italian architect Carlo Martinuzzi and on his own plans (the gable front, the loggia, and the three-part staircase). In the mid-1920s, a monument to the Serbian and first Yugoslav king Peter I was erected in the entrance of Town Hall. The monument, designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, was removed and destroyed by the Fascist Italian occupation authorities of the Province of Ljubljana in April 1941. Outside the town hall stands a replica of the Baroque Robba Fountain, work of Francesco Robba. The original work, finished in 1751, is kept in the National Gallery.

City Museum of Ljubljana

The City Museum of Ljubljana was established in 1935. It is housed in Turjak Palace at 15 Gentry Street in the centre of Ljubljana. The museum offers various pedagogical activities for children and students between the ages of 5 and 18 and also features a special itinerant museum groups for hospital schools, schools for learners with special needs and lower graders of the remote schools around Ljubljana.

Slovenian Railway Museum

The Slovenian Railway Museum, or Railway Museum of Slovenian railways, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, located on Parmova ulica 35, is the national museum for Slovenias railway history. The museum is tasked with acquiring, preserving and supplying knowledge about Slovenian railway history on the basis of the national collection. It is owned by Holding Slovenske Zeleznice, and is located in front of the former Ljubljana Šiška Railway station.

Kresija Palace

The Kresija Palace is a building that together with Philip Mansion marks the entrance to the old town of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It is located on Adamič Lunder Embankment on the right bank of the Ljubljanica River immediately after the Triple Bridge and borders Pogačar Square Stritar Street and Maček Street . Until 2007, the Ljubljana Center Administrative Unit was stationed in the building. Now, it houses a number of municipal offices, the Kresija Gallery, and the Ljubljana visitor centre.

Examples include the segment from Koseze crossing Klagenfurt Street (Celovška cesta) and Vienna Street (Dunajska cesta) and ending near Stožice Stadium.

Republic Square

Independence of Slovenia was declared here on 26 June 1991. The National Assembly Building stands at its northern side, and Cankar Hall at the southern side.

Court Palace

The Court Palace or Judicial Palace in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, is a 19th-century palace in the central district of the city that has for many years served as the seat of various regional courts of law. The palace was built after the Ljubljana earthquake in 1895 and it was renovated in the early 1950s. In the late 1940s, the palace was used for the show trials against opponents of the Yugoslav Titoist regime in the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. The most famous were the so-called Rožman trial in 1945, the Nagode trial in 1946 and the Dachau trials in 1947. The palace underwent a vast renovation in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, the Slovenian Minister of Justice Lovro Šturm announced that in three years time most of the courts of law housed in the palace will move to a newly built building near the Ljubljana railway station .

Gruber Palace

The Gruber Palace is a palace in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, standing at 1 Astronomy Street on the right bank of the Ljubljanica, to the east of Levstik Square and Castle Hill. It currently houses the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia.

Robba Fountain

The Robba Fountain, since the first half of the 20th century also known as the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers, is the fountain that stands in front of the Ljubljana Town Hall at Town Square in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. It was originally made in 1751 by the Italian sculptor Francesco Robba and is one of the citys most recognisable symbols.

Hradecky Bridge

The Hradecky Bridge is one of the first hinged bridges in the world, the first and only preserved cast iron bridge in Slovenia, and one of its most highly valued technical achievements. It spans the Ljubljanica River in Ljubljana. At the time of its construction, it was praised as elegant, very modern, and economical. Because it was later used to transport the dead from the Ljubljana hospital to the mortuary, it was nicknamed the Mortuary Bridge, but has retained its beauty and technical perfection. Throughout history, both names have persisted. Since 2011, it has been located at an extension of Hren Street between the Krakovo Embankment and the Gruden Embankment, connecting the Trnovo District and the Prule neighbourhood in the Center District. It has three articulated arches, each of them made of two parts, joined with a bolt by the principle of the charnier arch at the highest point of the arch. Technically, it quite surpasses the Iron Bridge in England. The elements are joined with screws instead of wedges, and reinforcing bars and hollow elements were used instead of full pylons, which has enabled the bridge to be much lighter, but stable. The Hradecky Bridge was manufactured according to the plans of the senior engineer Johann Hermann from Vienna at the Auersperg iron foundry in Dvor near Žužemberk, and was installed as the first cast iron bridge in Ljubljana in 1867, at the location of todays Cobblers Bridge. It was named after the former Ljubljana mayor Janez Nepomuk Hradecky, who had the most merit for its construction. In 1931, when the architect Jože Plečnik planned the new Cobblers Bridge, he moved the Hradecky Bridge further down the Ljubljanica near the former Ljubljana mortuary in the vicinity of Zalog Street . The original gas lamps were replaced with decorative facets. In 2004, it was closed to traffic, and in 2009 a footbridge was built next to it. In 2010, it was removed from the location, renovated, and transferred to its current site in 2011. It is now used only by pedestrians and cyclists.

The Buddhist Congregation Dharmaling is a Buddhist organization, which main office is registered to the Office for religious communities of the Government of Slovenia. Buddhist Congregation Dharmaling is also signatory of an agreement with the State of Slovenia, and is as such the 6th religious community to have signed such agreement in Slovenia . Following primarily the Gelug lineage, the head of the organization, Lama Shenphen Rinpoche – a Western reborn and officially recognized tulku by the Tibetan community – has a non sectarian type of approach. The Congregation’s teachings and practices are traditional, but are adapted to be accessible to Westerners and the life they live. A regular program of teaching exists in different countries and more periodical teachings are taking places in other countries where a study group exists. Retreats and seminars are also organized each year. Dharmaling is also active in the humanitarian fields, through AMCHI non profit organization created since 1989, and its Foundation.

St. James's Bridge

St. Jamess Bridge in Ljubljana is the bridge that crosses the Ljubljanica on the southern end of the Ljubljana downtown, next to the Zois Manor. It links Zois Street and Karlovec Street . The most important city traffic artery across the Ljubljanica runs on it. A wooden bridge was constructed at this place in 1824, later than other bridges of the period, and was therefore for a long time called the New Bridge. In 1915, it was replaced by a reinforced concrete corbel bridge by the engineer Alois Král and the architect Alfred Keller. It was described by the art historian Damjan Prelovšek as a "monumental neo-Biedermeier architectural language of late-Secession Vienna." Since 1954, there is a plaque with an inscription about a 15th-century town watermill, which caused damage to farmers and was destroyed in the 1515 peasant revolt, on the bridge. Four bronze relief plaques depicting scenes from The Water Man, a Ljubljana-related Romantic ballad of the poet France Prešeren, were intended to be put on the fence of the bridge. However, this has been never realised.
