Gethsemane Church

Gethsemane Church is one of four church buildings of the Lutheran Northern Prenzlau Berg Evangelical Congregation , within the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia, an umbrella organisation which includes Lutheran, Reformed, and United Protestant Calvinist congregations. Gethsemane Church is the best known church in the locality of Prenzlauer Berg, in Berlin's borough of Pankow. The church was named after the Garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. Christians revere the place as it was where the Twelve Apostles and Jesus of Nazareth prayed on the eve of his crucifixion. The church and its congregation played a crucial role before and during the Wende in the former German Democratic Republic in the autumn of 1989. The church was built between 1891 and 1893 erected following the plans of August Orth, the city's Baurat.

Kopenhagener Straße

The Kopenhagener Straße in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg district runs parallel to the Ringbahn tracks between busy Schönhauser Allee in the East all the way to the Mauerpark in the West, where the Berlin Wall separated the Soviet from the French sector. The street was named on 30 April 1899 after the Danish capital Copenhagen. At a length of 800 metres it features a nearly complete row of 61 apartment buildings built in the Jugendstil period with 4 modern houses and playgrounds in between. From East to West it is intersected by Rhinower Straße, then crossed by Sonnenburger Straße, by Ystader Straße and finally ends at Schwedter Straße at the northern end of the Mauerpark. At Sonnenburger Straße the Schönfließer Brücke, built in 1908 according to plans by Alfred Grenander, crossed the Ringbahn railway towards the north up until the end of World War II, when it was intentionally detonated to provide a hindrance to the advancing Soviet troops. Three buildings in the Kopenhagener Straße were destroyed in the process. As a replacement, a 60 m long pedestrian bridge was installed right beside during the governance of the German Democratic Republic . A study prepared by the geography department at the Humboldt University of Berlin counted 45 different artists in the street, making this one of Berlin's significant creative functional clusters. Further one finds very many cafés, restaurants, bars and the infamous Mittwochsclub (Wednesday Club, located in the cellar under the Kohlenquelle Café in No. 16). The most obvious structure in the street is the former Humboldt transformer station at No. 61 (on the corner of Sonnenburger Straße), that was planned by the renowned German industrial architect Hans Heinrich Müller. An experimental urban children's farm is located at the western end of the Kopenhagener Straße, providing the surreal view of horses and goats against a backdrop of dense urban housing and the Fernsehturm. The Kopenhagener Straße was inhabited by artists and bohémiens much before German reunification. Despite the renovation and revival of the majority of the buildings since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the cobblestone street at the northern rim of Berlin's city centre has maintained its pre-unification calm and creative charm. For this reason the Kopenhagener Straße was selected as the movie set for several movies that indulge in GDR Ostalgie, for example Der Rote Kakadu and Sommer vorm Balkon. Aside from artists, many actors, authors and architects also have made the street their home or place of work. Approximately half of the current residents lived in the street before reunification. Newer inhabitants are mostly from former West Germany and other European countries.

Ernst-Thälmann-Park

Ernst-Thälmann-Park is a park in the centre of the Prenzlauer Berg district in Berlin. It was laid out in 1986 at the site of a former coal gas plant and named after the former Communist party leader Ernst Thälmann . The former plant built in 1874 was closed in 1981, the last gasometer was demolished in 1984. With regard to the 750-year jubilee of East Berlin the East German government set up plans for an "inhabited park", including a memorial, a public pool, a planetarium, a school and a housing estate for 4,000 residents. The park was inaugurated on 16 April 1986, Thälmanns hundredth birthday. The former use of the area left an extensive contamination of soil and groundwater with cyanides, phenols and tar that after German reunification had to be cleared by excavation and bioremediation. Though there had been some discussion about the name, a majority of dwellers voted against a change in 1997. Today the park features public houses as well as art galleries and a small theatre at the former administrative building of the gas plant. The Ernst Thälmann bronze monument with a height of 14 m was created by Lev Kerbel between 1981 and 1986. Disputed from the beginning, some plaques with political slogans were removed in the 1990s. It is today a protected landmark.

Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle

Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle was an indoor sporting arena located in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin, Germany. It was named after the executed Berlin resistance fighter Werner Seelenbinder, a German wrestling champion at several European championships and 1936 Summer Olympics athlete. The arena opened in 1950 in what was then East Berlin, in a converted hall that formerly was part of the central cattle market and slaughterhouse complex. It then hosted the first national meeting of the Free German Youth. One of the major sports venues in Berlin in the 20th century, the capacity of the arena was up to 10,000 people. Until the opening of the Palast der Republik in 1976, East German mass organisation like the Socialist Unity Party of Germany regularly used the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle as a convention hall. From 1970 to 1990 it was also the site of the annual Festival of Political Songs. On 7 March 1988 Depeche Mode made their East German debut here, followed by The Wedding Present and Jonathan Richman but also by Feeling B and Rio Reiser in the same year. Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle was finally closed and demolished in 1993. It was replaced by the present-day Velodrom.

Berlin Storkower Straße station

Storkower Straße is a railway station in the Prenzlauer Berg locality of Berlin, close to the locality's border with Fennpfuhl. Located at the Ringbahn it is served by the S-Bahn lines S41, S42, S8 and S9. The station was opened in 1881 under the name of Zentralviehhof, as the vast area south of the station then was the site of Berlin's central slaughterhouse that received animals by rail here. An over 400-metre long pedestrian bridge (called the Langer Jammer, i.e. "Long Misery") crossed the processing plant connecting the station with the Friedrichshain residential areas. The station was renamed in the 1970s, while in 1991 the slaughterhouse finally closed. The notorious bridge except for about 150 m (490 ft) above the tracks was demolished in 2002. The remaining portion of the bridge, which stretches from Storkower Straße north of the station to Hermann-Blankenstein-Straße south of the station, was renovated and now serves as the only entrance and exit to the station.
