Fabric Synagogue

The Fabric New Synagogue in Timișoara, on Coloniei Street, is a Neologue synagogue in the Fabric quarter of the Romanian city of Timișoara, in the region of Banat. It was built when Timișoara was a part of Transylvania and integrated in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The style is Neo-Moorish; it remains one of the most impressive buildings in the city. The year of the foundation of the first synagogue on this site is disputed. Some opinions date it to the year 1838, others, to 1841. The temple was first opened for a Jewish community that, after 1870, joined the so-called "Status Quo Ante" trend of Hungarian and Transylvanian Judaism. A dozen years later, this community became Neolog. On September 3, 1899, the building we see today was inaugurated with a preach of the Rabbi dr.Jacob Singer. Its construction was made possible by the contributions of donors, recruited by the head of the community, Alex Kohn. The opening ceremony was notably attended by the renowned mayor of the town, Carol Telbisz. The building was designed by the well-known Hungarian architect Lipot Baumhorn, based in Budapest, and the construction itself was under the direction of local contractor Josef Kremmer. The synagogues organ was built by a local master, Leopold Wegenstein. The reputation of the womens choir survives to this day. As a result of massive emigration, especially during the postwar, communist era, the Jewish community dwindled to a critically low level, such that the synagogue is today in a state of decay and may be in danger of collapse.

Romanian National Opera, Timișoara

The Romanian National Opera, Timișoara is a public opera and ballet institution in Timișoara, Romania. It is one of the national opera companies of Romania. The Opera shares the same building with the Mihai Eminescu National Theatre in Timișoara. The first performance at the Timișoara Opera was on 27 April 1947, the inaugural concert being Aida by G. Verdi. On April 20, 1880 the building is devastated by the first fire. The theatre goes bankrupt and it is bought by the authorities, in charge of its recovery. Since investments were insufficient individual funds were needed. The government offered "eternal" property over twenty lodges and the right of inheritance. Later, in agreement with the owners, they are redeemed. The reconstruction, completed in 1882, keeps the original Renaissance style of the facade. After the second fire, which takes place in 1920, only the lateral wings remain intact. The reconstruction of the building begins on July 15, 1923, by architect Duiliu Marcu. On December 20, 1989, during the Romanian Revolution, a crowd of 40,000 gathered in the open space in front of the opera house. Some managed to enter the building through the rear, and a succession of figures representing factories and ethnic groups delivered speeches from the balcony. From that point, the revolutionaries controlled the opera and surrounding square, although representatives of the Ceaușescu regime briefly continued to hold the county council building.

Politehnica University of Timișoara

Politehnica University of Timișoara is a public university founded on November 11, 1920. Located in Timișoara, Romania, it is one of the largest technical universities in Central and Eastern Europe. The university's research and scientific training is based on the strategy of promoting multidisciplinary research and the priority given to new technology. According to the Scimago Lab, based on data collected between 2007 and 2011, Politehnica University of Timișoara ranked 1251 in the World, 68 regionally and 6 in the country by number of publications. In 2011, Politehnica University of Timișoara was classified as an institution for Higher Education and Advanced Scientific Research by the Romanian Ministry of Education, thus becoming the only university in Western Romania categorized among the best 12 university in the country. Moreover, the international evaluation carried out by the European University Association concluded that "Politehnica University of Timișoara is a high-performance university which enjoys a distinguished reputation within the surrounding society".
