Lake Izvorul Muntelui

The Lake Izvorul Muntelui, also known as Lake Bicaz, is the largest artificial lake on the interior waters of Romania; it was created after the completion of a dam built on the Bistriţa River. The dam is located a few kilometers north of the town of Bicaz. The dam was built between 1950 and 1960 and is used to generate hydroelectricity at the Bicaz-Stejaru hydro-plant. It has a height of 127 meters, a length of 435 meters, and a maximum width of 119 meters. The lake has a length of 40 kilometers, an area of 33 km² and a maximum volume of 1,250 million m³. The lake is a popular tourist destination in the region, especially in summertime, when visitors can take the ferryboat from the Bicaz port for a short trip on the lake, enjoying the magnificent view of Mount Ceahlău on the west shore. In the 1960s and 1970s there was regular ferry service between the Bicaz port and the villages on the lake shore. At Potoci, a few kilometers north of the town of Bicaz, there is a biological research facility, equipped with a small submersible used for underwater explorations. The facility was visited by the marine biologist Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1984.

Văratec Monastery

Văratec Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox nun monastery located in north-eastern part of the country, in Văratec village, Agapia Commune, Neamţ County. It is situated at 12 from Târgu Neamț city and 40 km from Piatra Neamț city. It is the largest nun monastery in Romania, with more than 400 nuns living here. The monastery was founded in 1785 by schema nun Olimpiada, with her confessor, Father Iosif. In this work, mother Olimpiada was guided by Father Paisius Velicicovsky, hegumen of Neamț Monastery. Set under Agapia Monastery administration, which was close by, Văratec Monastery became an independent monastery in 1839. Massive stone walls enclose the main church, The Dormition of the Virgin Mary, the abbots building and the administrative buildings and the monasterys Museum, where the "Queen Mary" workshop used to be . The monastic precinct is surrounded by the monastery village, made up of rural traditional houses, where the nuns live, and which lie along narrow alleys. The assembly of Văratec Monastery was included on the historical monuments list from Neamț county in 2004, with the classification code NT-II-a-B-10732 and it consists on 5 objectives: The Main Church, "The Dormition of the Virgin Mary" dating from the beginning of the 19th century, with the code NT-II-m-A-10732.01 The Gate Bell Tower dating from the 19th century, with the code NT-II-m-A-10732.02 The "Saint John the Baptist" church dating from 1844, with improvements around 1880, with the code NT-II-m-A-10732.03 The "Transfiguration" church dating from 1847, with the code NT-II-m-A-10732.04 The cells dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, with the code NT-II-m-A-10732.05

Neamț Monastery

The Neamț Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox religious settlement, one of the oldest and most important of its kind in Romania. It was built in the 15th century, and it is an example of medieval Moldavian architecture. A jewel of 15th-century architecture, the church was built during Ştefan cel Mare's reign and finished in the year when the Moldavian army won the battle against King John Albert . The monastery is located in north-eastern part of Romania, in Neamț County, 10 km west of Târgu Neamț. It is accessible by car and train (Târgu Neamţ railway station); the nearest airport is Suceava, located about 60 km north. Sumptuous, with delicate colour effects, the monastery shows the maturity of the Moldavian architectonic style, which matured during Stefan cel Mare's period. The façade of the church is covered with the decoration characteristic of Stefan cel Mare's time: Gothic windows and friezes with enamelled disks, coloured in green, yellow and brown. In the chamber of the tombs, which appear for the first time at this church, is the tomb of Stefan al II-lea, son of Alexandru cel Bun and uncle of Ştefan cel Mare. The art treasures kept at Neamț Monastery are proof of the intense artistic and cultural activity which took place here through the centuries. Here Gavril Uric showed his talent, the most important representative of the Moldavian miniature from the 15th century. His first known manuscript, dated 1429, is kept in the Bodleian Library at Oxford (UK). The calligraphers and miniaturists of Stefan cel Mare who worked at this important center made many of the books given to Putna Monastery. In the cells of the monastery, the chronicler Macarie wrote the chronicle of Petru Rareş's rule, and Eftimie the chronicle of Alexandru Lăpușneanu's rule. The learned tradition of the Neamț Monastery disappeared in the 17th and 18th centuries, to be reborn at the beginning of next century, when Metropolitan Veniamin Costachi established a printing house here. In the monastery museum is the old printing press, which was used to print books since 1807. The monastery's library is said to be more than 600 years old. Among the almost 11,000 volumes are many rare books, some being the first ones printed in this country. The altar screen of the former church from Neamț Fortress, is the most important treasure of all those in the monastery, along with the icon painted by Nicolae Grigorescu "The Flight from Egypt".

Bicaz Gorge

The Bicaz Gorge is a gorge in Romania, located in the north-east part of the country, in Neamţ and Harghita counties; it is part of the Cheile Bicazului-Hășmaș National Park. The gorge was excised by the waters of Bicaz River and it serves as a passageway between the Romanian provinces of Moldova and Transylvania, the former border between Romania and the Kingdom of Hungary. It is a noted location to see the wallcreeper, an uncommon cliff-dwelling bird. The road along the 8 kilometres of ravines, often in serpentines with rock on one side and a sheer drop on the other, is one of the most spectacular drives in the country. Also within the gorge is Lacul Roşu, with its traditional cabins, hotels, and its famous lake caused by a landslide in the 19th century. Cheile Bicazului is one of the main rock climbing sites in Romania.

Bistrița Monastery

The Bistrița Monastery is a Romanian Orthodox monastery located 8 km west of Piatra Neamț. It was dedicated in 1402, having as original ctitor the Moldavian Voivode Alexandru cel Bun whose remains are buried here. The church is historically and archaeologically valuable. It shows features of Byzantine architecture, is richly ornamented, with a 15th-century entrance door of fine craftsmanship and detailed frescoes. The monastery is surrounded by 4 meter high stone walls built during Petru Rareș's reign , the original ones being destroyed in 1538 by Suleiman the Magnificent's army. Also from the same period dates a chapel located north of the monastery. The inner court bell tower had already been erected in 1498 by Ștefan cel Mare. With his extensive restoration of the monastery in 1554, Alexandru Lăpușneanu is also considered to be a ctitor. Thus, the monastery is considered to have been donated by 4 voivodes of the Mușatin dynasty (Alexandru I, Ștefan III, Petru IV, Alexandru Lăpușneanu). A remarkable item preserved here is the miraculous icon of Saint Anne given as a present to the monastery in 1407-1408 by Voivode Alexandru I's wife, Lady Ana. According to tradition, the icon was given as a "patronage gift" to Lady Ana by empress Jelena, wife of Manuel II Palaiologos, emperor of Constantinople. The icon was restored in the 18th century and in 1853 was placed in a new section, made of carved and gilded wood, of the kliros. The monastery was an important cultural center for calligraphers, miniaturists and chroniclers. The monastery's museum hosts an important collection of medieval art.

Bicaz Dam

Bicaz-Stejaru Hydro Power Plant is a hydropower development on the Bistriţa River, near Bicaz, Romania. The project was started and finished in the 1950s. It consists of a dam, a reservoir and a hydro power plant. The dam is a reinforced concrete structure with a height of 127 m; it formed and holds Bicaz Lake reservoir, also known as Mountain Spring Lake ("Lacul Izvorul Muntelui"). The reservoir is the largest artificial lake in Romania; it manages river levels downstream, provides fishing, attracts tourism, fuels the power plant, and controls flooding. The Oak Hydro-power plant ("Hidrocentrala Stejaru") is equipped with six turbines (four-27.5 MW and two-50 MW turbines) for a total installed capacity of 210 MW. The plant generates an average of 500 GWh of electricity per year, at a capacity factor of 30%; it has produced over 20 billion MWh of electricity in the first 50 years since commissioning.

Durău

Durău is a ski resort located in north-eastern Romania, in Neamţ County, Moldavia near the Ceahlău Massif . The location is disadvantaged because of the lack of accessibility, the only access road being DN15; the regular route from Bicaz is closed as of February 2006 due to landslides. Durau Resort lies in Neamt county, at 780-800 m altitude, 9 km from Izvorul Muntelui Lake on the Bistrita river, in a sunny glade, on the north-west slope of the Ceahlau massif. The fauna of the surrounding woods is very rich: carpathian stag, brown bear, wild boar, black goat. From here hiking can be organised to the surrounding mountains, Duruitoarea Waterfall, the Natural Reservation of bison from Ceahlau Mountains and many other trips: visits to nearby monasteries, monasteries from the north of Moldavia, Bicaz Gorges, Rosu Lake, Borsec and Vatra Dornei resort. In Durau youll find a small church painted by the famous Romanian painter Nicolae Tonitza and also a monastery built in 1992. Durau is a year-round resort. The stimulating climate and the fresh air make the resort ideal for leisure but also for the treatment of neurosis, physical or intellectual fatigue, and nutritional diseases. From Durau you can go hiking towards Toaca and Ocolasu Mare Peaks in the Ceahlau Mountains or towards Duruitoarea Waterfall. In town there are four 2- and 3-star hotels, an ancient monastery and a conference center belonging to the Romanian Orthodox Church.
