Vadakkunnathan Temple

Vadakkunnathan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva at city of Thrissur, of Kerala state in India. This temple is a classic example of the architectural style of Kerala and has monumental towers on all four sides and also a kuttambalam. Mural paintings depicting various episodes from Mahabharata can be seen inside the temple. The shrines and the Kuttambalam display vignettes carved in wood. The temple, along with the mural paintings, has been declared as a National Monument by India under the AMASR Act. According to popular local lore, this is the first temple built by Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Vishnu. Tekkinkadu Ground, encircling the Vadakkunnathan Temple, is the main venue of the Thrissur Pooram. Non-Hindus are not allowed to enter into the temple. In the year 2012 Archaeological Survey of India has recommended 14 sites, including Vadakkumnathan Temple and palaces, from Kerala to include in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The temple is one of the major Shiva temples in Kerala counted along with the Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple, Kaduthruthy Mahadeva Temple, Vaikom Temple, Ernakulam Shiva Temple and Chengannur Mahadeva Temple.

Mart Mariam Cathedral

Mart Mariam Cathedral is the cathedral of the Chaldean Syrian Church of India, part of the Assyrian Church of the East. It is located in Thrissur City in the state of Kerala, and is the city's first Christian church. The church established in 1814 by Chaldean Syrian(half Catholic-half Nestorian) faction of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church ( and was originally known as Our Lady of Dolours Church.Abraham Kathanar of Palai was the head of the Chaldean Syrian faction in 1814, whose headquarters was at Thrissur.The other faction of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church was RomanSyrians whose head was Sankurickal Geevarghese Kathanar whose headquarters was at Alappuzha. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church is an Eastern Catholic church in communion with the Pope, the head of Catholic church).In 1860 Chaldean Catholic bishop Mar Thoma Rocos arrived in India and his headquarters was Thaikkattussery,Ernakulam Archdiocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and returned to MiddleEast in 1862. In 1874 the Chaldean Catholic bishop Elias Mellus arrived in India by the request of ChaldeanSyrian faction and convinced a large part of the Syro-Malabar Christian community to accept him as their bishop. The group supporting Mellus was based in Our Lady of Dolours. They eventually broke with the Catholic hierarchy and formed the Chaldean Syrian Church which is part of the universal Assyrian Church of the East. They retained the Our Lady of Dolours building, but renamed it(revived the old name) Mart Mariam. In 1929 the Chaldean Syrian Catholics(Independent group) who left from Mart Mariam Church ,Thrissur joined/returned Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and erected a new building, the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours.Mar Raphel Thattil belongs to this group. Mart Mariam church,Thrissur now serves as the cathedral of the Chaldean Syrian Church of India which is part of the universal Assyrian Church of the East.

It is also the headquarters of the Thrissur District. The City is built around a 65-acre (26 ha) hillock called the Thekkinkadu Maidan which seats the Vadakkumnathan temple. Thrissur was once the capital of the Kingdom of Cochin. It is located 300 kilometres (186 mi) towards north-west of the state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Thrissur [തൃശ്ശൂർ] is also known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala because of its cultural, spiritual and religious leanings throughout history. It contains the Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy, Kerala Lalithakala Akademi and Kerala Sahitya Academy. The city hosts the Thrissur Pooram festival, the most colourful and spectacular temple festival in Kerala. The festival is held at the Thekkinkadu Maidan in April or May. Thrissur has a large number of well-known temples including the Vadakkumnathan temple, Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple and Paramekkavu temple, and the Guruvayur temple as well as two famous churches, the Our Lady of Lourdes Syro-Malabar Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral and the Our Lady of Dolours Syro-Malabar Catholic Basilica. Thrissur has historically been a centre of Hindu scholarship. The city has one of the most important temples of Hindu Shaivism, that is the Vadakunnathan temple. The district is also home of one of the most holiest Hindu Vaishnava temples, the Guruvayur temple. Christianity, Islam and Judaism entered into the Indian subcontinent through the Thrissur District. The works of scholars and Eastern Christian writings claim Thomas the Apostle to have set foot in Muziris near Thrissur 2,000 years ago. (AD 51–52) The country's first mosque, Cheraman Juma Masjid, opened in AD 629. Thrissur has opened the gates for Arabs, Romans, Portuguese, Dutch and English. The city has served as an incubator for many Malayali entrepreneurs, and is a major financial and commercial hub of Kerala. It flexes its economic muscle in India as the headquarters of three major scheduled banks, South Indian Bank Ltd, Catholic Syrian Bank and Dhanalakshmi Bank Ltd and a clutch of Chit funds. The city is also a big centre for shopping in Kerala for silks and gold jewellery. Thrissur attracts the largest number of domestic tourists in Kerala. Apart from being the cultural nerve centre of Kerala, it is also a major academic hub and is home to several educational institutions including the Kerala Kalamandalam, Jawahar Bal Bhavan Thrissur, Kerala Police Academy, Kerala Agricultural University, Kerala University of Medical and Allied Sciences, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kerala Institute of Local Administration and Kerala Forest Research Institute.

Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple

Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple is a Hindu temple located in City of Thrissur in Kerala, India. The temple is one of the two rival groups participating in Thrissur Pooram, which is the biggest local festival in Kerala.Bhagavad Gita chanting makes the temple always alive.Every day the Devaswom is giving free lunch to people. The straight road opposite to the temple leads to Poonkunnam Railway station and further up to Poonkunnam junction. From there people can catch train or bus to Guruvayoor temple.Behind the temple there is a temple for Ganesh . The dress code is a must inside the temple No pants or modern dresses allowed.The name of the parallel road in front of the temple is Shornur road,leading to Vadakunnatan temple on one side and Paturaikkal and then to Shornur on the other.

Mulankunnathukavu railway station

Mulangunnathukavu Railway Station is in Mulankunnathukavu , a panchayat in Puzhakkal block of Thrissur, which is situated between Wadakkanchery Railway Station and Poonkunnam Railway Station in the busy Shoranur-Cochin Harbour section. Mulangunnathukavu Railway Station is operated by the Chennai-headquartered Southern Railways of the Indian Railways. The station is used as shuttle station for Thrissur Railway Station that is 10 km south. It is just 250 meters away from State Highway 22 . Ticketing is computerized and offers basic parking facilities. Only passenger trains and MEMU trains stop here. A Food Corporation of India storage facility is located close nearby. The line presently connects only trains through cities of ErnakulamPalakkad/Shornur/Tirur(Malappuram)/Thalassery/Kannur and Coimbatore. Two Shornur-Ernakulam passengers arrives approximately 6:00 am and reaches Kannur by 12:20 pm. The Palakkad-Ernakulam memu train arrives around 10:20 am and reaches by 12:50 pm in Ernakulam Junction. The Ernakulam-Palakkad memu train starts by 3.05 pm,reaching the station around 5:15 pm and finally stops in Palakkad by 7:20 pm.
