Würzburg Residence

The Würzburg Residence is a palace in Würzburg, Lower Franconia. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, representants of the Austrian/South German Baroque were involved in the construction, as well as Robert de Cotte and Germain Boffrand, who were followers of the French Style. Balthasar Neumann, architect of the court of the Bishop of Würzburg, was the principal architect of the Residenz, which was commissioned by the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn and his brother Friedrich Carl von Schönborn in 1720, and completed in 1744. The Venetian painter Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, assisted by his son, Domenico, painted frescoes in the building. Interiors include the grand staircase, the chapel, and the grand salon. The building was dubbed the "nicest parsonage in Europe" by Napoleon. It was heavily damaged during World War II, and restoration has been in progress since 1945.

Botanischer Garten der Universität Würzburg

The Botanischer Garten der Universität Würzburg is a botanical garden maintained by the University of Würzburg. It is located on Mittlerer Dallenbergweg, Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany, and open daily; admission is free. The garden was first established in 1696 as a medicinal plant garden in what is now the Julius Hospitals park in todays city center. Its first catalog, published in 1722, listed 423 types of plants including 52 from the region, as well as from the Mediterranean, South Africa, Asia, Central and South America, North America, and Atlantic islands . Its first greenhouse was built in 1722, with three additional greenhouses added in 1739-41; all were replaced by four new greenhouses in 1787-89. During the late 18th century, however, most of the medicinal plant garden was converted to ornamental gardens, and by 1791 only 3000 m² remained for medicinal plants. This space was intensively cultivated, however, and contained over 6000 species. In 1833 the garden was reorganized by Linnaean taxonomy, and in 1854 was administratively assigned to the university proper rather than being held jointly with the hospital. As part of this new arrangement, the garden moved in 1854 onto university grounds, then moved again in 1873 to a site near the former Physics Institute, now marked by the X-ray Monument honoring the 1895 discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. Beginning in 1960 the garden moved to its current location in the citys outskirts, with the plant collections relocated in 1968 to a 7.5 hectare garden, opening ceremony in 1971, and in 1978 an addition of a further 1.5 hectares. Today the garden cultivates about 10,000 documented plant species, with specialized collections of plants such as tubers and onions, as well as rare native and exotic plants, and a collection honoring Würzburg naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold who explored the plants of Japan. The garden contains the following major areas: Julius-von-Sachs-Institute of Plant Sciences Tropical greenhouses Mediterranean courtyard Mediterranean greenhouse Mediterranean garden Alpine plants and alpine house Medicinal plants North American prairie plants and winter-hardy cacti Tree collection East Asian garden European forest and meadows Pond and marsh plants Agricultural crops Regional plants Peony collection The gardens herbarium contains about 100,000 specimens, with its oldest documents dating to around 1810.

Museum im Kulturspeicher Würzburg

The Museum im Kulturspeicher Würzburg is a municipal art museum located at Veitshöchheimer Strasse 5, Würzburg, Northern Bavaria, Germany. It is open daily except Monday; an admission fee is charged. The museum opened in 2002 within a converted river-side warehouse that provides 3,500 m² of exhibit space in 12 rooms. It contains two distinct collections: the municipal art collection, founded in 1941 as the Städtische Gallerie and originally located in Hofstraße; and the Peter C. Ruppert Collection of European concrete art from World War II to the present day. The municipal collection exhibits regional art, primarily from Franconia and Southern Germany, ranging from Biedermeier-style portraits and landscapes of the first half of the 19th century, through German impressionism and painters of the Berlin Secession, including Robert Breyer, Philipp Franck, Walter Leistikow, Joseph Oppenheimer, and Max Slevogt, as well as members of the Weimar Saxon-Grand Ducal Art School including Ludwig von Gleichen-Rußwurm and Franz Bunke. It also includes works by Bauhaus painter Hans Reichel and works from the estate of sculptor Emy Roeder, as well as about 30,000 graphics works. The Ruppert collection includes concrete art from 22 European countries, incorporating a broad spectrum of materials and media, exhibited within six galleries . Artists include Max Bill, John Carter, Andreas Christen, Ralph Eck, Christoph Freimann, Gerhard von Graevenitz, Erwin Heerich, Malcolm Hughes, Norbert Kricke, Richard Paul Lohse, Maurizio Nannucci, Nausika Pastra, Henry Prosi, Bridget Riley, Peter Sedgley, and Anton Stankowski.

Marienberg Fortress

Marienberg Fortress is a prominent landmark on the left bank of the Main river in Würzburg, in the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. The mighty Fortress Marienberg is a symbol of Würzburg and served as a home of the local prince-bishops for nearly five centuries. It has been a fort since ancient times. Most of the current structures originally were built in Renaissance and Baroque styles between the 16th and 18th centuries. After Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden conquered the area in 1631 during the Thirty Years War, the castle was reconstructed as a Baroque residence. After it ceased to serve as residence of the Bishops of Würzburg, the fortress saw repeated action in the wars of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Festung Marienberg was severely damaged by British bombs in March 1945 and only fully rebuilt in 1990. Today, it houses two museums.

Würzburger Hofbräu

The Würzburg Hofbräu is the only brewery in Würzburg, Germany. It was founded in 1643 by the Franconian Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn and is deeply rooted in the region of Lower Franconia. At that time there were many Swedish soldiers in Würzburg, who had emptied most of the wine stores of the city. Therefore Prince Bishop Johann Philipp von Schönborn founded the brewery. Since the brewery was a good source of income, it was also supported by his successor bishops. In memory of the founder of the brewery the crown of the prince bishop decorates the brewery logo. The slogan of the Würzburg Hofbräuhaus, "Enjoy under a lucky star," refers to this. During the 19th Century, the Würzburg Hofbräuhaus became an internationally active company. It exported in 1887 as one of the first German breweries in the United States. As of 2011 it exports to buyers of brewery products in the United States, Italy and China. The Würzburg Hofbräuhaus is primarily a regional brewery in Lower Franconia. Since 1993 the brewery was technically modernized and expanded in subsequent years through strategic acquisitions. In 1999, the takeover of the royal brewery Wächstersbach and Wernerbräu GmbH 2011 Lohrer was feeding the brewery, which today is called Tusker beer GmbH. Since 2005, the Würzburg Hofbräuhaus GmbH is owned by the Kulmbach Brewery.
