Top Attractions in Odessa

Pryvoz Market

The famous Pryvoz Market, located at 14 Pryvozna Street, is the largest food market in Odessa, Ukraine. Privoz began in 1827, when wares were sold from the back of horse driven carts. Privoz adjoined the Stary bazaar market) the first bazaar in Odessa. Gradually more buildings were constructed as the city grew. In the 1940s zoo animals were moved from the Odessa zoo to Simferopol. Four-year-old elephant Murza escaped. It ran to the fruit section of the Pryvoz Market and ate several apples, pulled out pickled cucumbers from a barrel, tasted some fresh cabbage and dried fruits. Murza was caught and returned to the zoo. A popular Soviet comedy film, Striped Trip was inspired by this incident. A western journalist explained his visit to the market: Privoz was also mentioned in The Odessa Tales of Isaak Babel.

Odessa Archeological Museum

The Odessa Archaeological Museum is one of the oldest archaeological museums in Ukraine. It was founded in 1825; the current museum building was completed in 1883. Since 1997, the Odessa Archeological Museum has functioned not only as a museum but also as an institute of scientific research into the archeology of primitive society in the Northern Black Sea region and the archeology of the Middle Ages. The museum conducts expositions, restorations and publishing activities. The museums holds more than 160,000 exhibits: archeological finds from the Black Sea northern region, the largest collection in Ukraine of Ancient Egyptian sarcophagi, stone slabs with hieroglyphics and fragments of papyrus, Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman exhibits. The museum is also famous by its collection of coins and medals. There are over 50,000 coins in the museum treasury from Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, the Byzantine Empire, Ancient Kievan Rus and coins of the Russian Empire from the Romanovs dynasty. A few years ago the Leventis Foundation of Cyprus funded the new Greek and Cypriote gallery at the museum; because of the large number of Greeks in Odessa in the 19th century, the museum has rich collections of material from both areas. Odessa Russian Theatre

The Odessa Academic Russian Dramatic Theatre named A. Ivanov is the oldest theatre in southern Ukraine. The theatre was constructed in 1874 at the initiative of A. C. Velikanov, a local merchant. Velikanov also intended to hire for Nikolai Miloslavsky’s company as the main performer for the theatre. Initially the theatre was called ‘’Theatre Velikanova’’ after his owner. However, in 1875 Velikanov sold the theatre to F. Rafalovich who renamed it “Russian Theatre”, name which it kept up to present. In the years before the Russian Revolution the theatre hosted the main theatrical events of the city. Many Russian, Ukrainian, German, French, Italian, drama, opera and оperetta companies performed on its stage among which Sarah Bernhardt, Eleonora Duse, Benoît-Constant Coquelin, Jean Mounet-Sully, Maria Savina, Vladimir Davydov, Maria Zankovetskaya, Panas Saksagansky and Mark Kropivnitsky. After the Russian Civil War, the “State Odessa Russian Drama Theatre” was officially registered in 1926 and the building was allocated to this government owned entity. In 1927, the Executive Political Committee of the Odessa Governorate appointed opera singer Andrei Alekseyevich Ivanov as director of the theatre. Today the theatre is also called the Ivanov Theatre. Important actors started their activity at the Odessa Russian Theatre, among which Mikhail Astangov, Darya Zerkalova and Vladimir Samoilov. Among the actors which spent most of their acting activity on the theatre’s stage are Nikolai Komissarov, Nikolai Volkov the elder, Liya Bugova, Pavel Mikhaylov, Boris Zaydenberg, Leonid Marennikova, Yevgeny Kotov, Lidiya Polyakova and Igor Shelyugin. Important Russian and Ukrainian directors mounted productions at the Odessa Russian Theatre, among which: Abram Rubin, Alexey Gripich, Аvraam Teplev, Aleksandr Solomarsky, Vladimir Bortko the elder, Viktor Terentyev, Konstantin Chernyadev, Viktor Strizhov, Eduard Mitnitsky, Aleksandr Dzekun and many other things After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the theatre maintained its status as Russian-language theatre. Being closed for renovation for about two years, the theatre opened in 2003 after extensive reconstruction and major overhaul. A team of young actors has been hired, which interact with well-known visiting actors. An art management of theatre is coordinated by a board consisting of three directors. At present, these positions are held by Alexey Girba, Sergey Golomazov and Alexey Litvin. In December 2009, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine awarded the Odessa regional Russian drama theatre the rank of academic theatre. In the Soviet Union and the new states created after the collapse of the Soviet Union, this title is awarded to the theatres considered to be most prestigious in the country.

Kulykove Pole

Kulykove Pole is a square-garden and necropolis located in the Prymorsky raion of Odessa, in a historical centre of the city. It is located near the Odessa Station. Kulykove Pole became really famous during Euromaidan events serving as a place for Antimaidan protests, active participants of which built a tent city in the beginning of 2014 which stood until the 2 May events. Over the years the square is known a place of various festivities. In times of the Russian Empire, here were taken place Easter, Christmas, military parades, celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Muscovy victory in the Battle of Poltava, the 100th Anniversary of the end of French invasion of Russia others. During the Soviet times, here took places military parades and the 1 May demonstrations. In Ukraine, Kulykove Pole is known as a place of the annual Humorina celebration on the April Fools' Day.

Arcadia Park

Arcadia park is a small park in Odessa, Ukraine, located up to 2014 in the historical quarter Arcadia, at the end of the Genuezska Street, down from the 10th of April Square, on the coast of the Gulf of Odessa. The park is good known for its numerous restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The famous beach Arcadia Beach is located here. The best known place in the park is its Central Avenue, which threads down from the Genuezska Street to the sea coast, where the beach is located. Extensive reconstruction of the park, mostly on its Central Avenue, was started in January 2014. Nearly all the plants and greenery was demolished, the central avenue was covered with granite povement tiles. Also, massive marble fountains and planters were constructed. The fountains are covered by plywood in the winter time. A little trees, mainly pines and palms, transported from Italy, were planted.

Hretska Ploshcha

Hretska Ploshcha is one of the main squares of Odessa. It is located on the crossing of the streets Hretska and Oleksandrivskyi Prospekt. At different times it has been called Aleksandrovskaya or Martynovskogo . This is one of the biggest squares of Odessa, it has a rectangular shape with the oval building of Mayurov House in the center, also with semi-round houses on the sides. This is the oldest square in Odessa which survived as Market square of the city of Khadzhibey. Down by the Hretska Street, between the Hretska Ploshcha and Katerynynska Street, was a muslim cemetery. After the capture of the Khadzhibey Fortress the square was free of buildings. The buildings construction started from the part close to Hretska Street, later from Deribasivska Street. The buildings were constracted mainly by Greeks of families Ioannopulos, Serafinos, Papakhadzhis, Rallis, Maraslis. The Greek secret society Filiki Eteria, which aim was the struggle for independence of Greece, was located in one of the buildings on the square since 1814. The main market of the city was in the square for a long time. The garden square was in the centre of the square until the construction of the Greek Orthodox church. But the church building was not finished; the background of the church was used for the construction of the Mayurov House, also known as the Roundhouse. The last construction was a mall. In the Soviet period the square was an important transport centre. Here was the tram station, also the bus terminal. The semi-round house which separated the square from the Bunina Street, was demolished during the World War II. The place was used as a garden in the 1950s and 1960s, but later the modern restaurant building was constructed. The Mayurov House was demolished in 1996 and then rebuilt with significant changes.
