Kongsberg

Not to be confused with the former Prussian city of Königsberg. Kongsberg is a town and municipality in Buskerud county, Norway. The town was founded in 1624 under the name Konings Bierg by Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV as a mining community. It was granted its royal charter of trade—amounting to official township—in 1802. The municipality of Kongsberg was established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The rural municipalities of Ytre Sandsvær and Øvre Sandsvær were merged into the municipality of Kongsberg on 1 January 1964. Today, Kongsberg is perhaps best known for being the home of Norway's major defence contractor, Kongsberg Gruppen, formerly Kongsberg Vaapenfabrikk. Two of its well known products were the Kongsberg Colt and the Krag-Jørgensen rifle. The latter was adopted in the late 19th century as the standard army rifle in Denmark, United States of America and Norway.

Nesbyen

Nesbyen is a town in Nes municipality in the county of Buskerud, Norway. Nes is the administrative center of Nes municipality. Nes is located in the traditional district of Hallingdal. Nesbyen has a population of about 3,500 inhabitants. It is located on the Bergen Line railroad which runs between Oslo and Bergen. Nesbyen Station was opened in 1907 when the Bergen Railway was opened to Gulsvik. Nesbyen is located on Norwegian National Road 7. Gamle Nes is the oldest part of Nesbyen. Nesbyen was an early administrative center for Hallingdal. Mainly buildings in Gamle Nes dated to before 1900. Nesbyen is surrounded by mountains on several sides, with good roads to most mountain areas. Hallingnatten is the municipality's highest point, 1,314 meters above sea level. Hallingdal Museum, founded in 1899 and one of the oldest open air museums in Norway, is headquartered in Nesbyen. Hallingdal Museum is organized with professional, administrative and operational responsibility for the museums in Hallingdal. Nesbyen is listed as the location with the highest recorded temperature in Norway, with a record of 35.6°C. set on 20 June 1970. Nes kraftverk is a hydroelectric power station 4 km north of Nesbyen. The power plant was commissioned in 1967, and takes advantage of a drop of 285 meters from the Strandefjorden. The power plant is the largest and lowest in Hallingdal River watershead . There are installed four Francis turbines of 70 MW each. The normal annual production is about 1330 GWh. Besides intake from Strandefjorden, water is taken from the rivers Ridola, Lya and Votna. It also transferred water from the river Rukkedøla through a separate tunnel. The power plant is owned and operated by E-CO Energi.

Geilo

Geilo is a centre in the municipality of Hol in Norway, in the valley of Hallingdal, with around 2,300 inhabitants. The Bergen Line facilitated Geilo's development as the first skiing resort in the country, and it is still one of the largest. It is also famous for having some of the most luxurious and expensive holiday cabins in Norway. Geilo is primarily a ski resort town, but also offers summer activities. Geilo is in a valley with mountain ranges on each side. The center of the town lies at 800 meters above sea level, and its highest point is 1178 meters above sea level. It is 250 km from Oslo and 260 km from Bergen. It has a train station with roughly five trains a day going to either Bergen or Oslo . The closest airport is Geilo Airport, Dagali , while the closest airport that accepts international flights is Fagernes Airport. Geilo has three lakes, Slåttahølen, Vestlefjorden, and Ustedalsfjorden, by far the largest of the three.

Norwegian Mining Museum

The Norwegian Mining Museum is located in Kongsberg, Buskerud, Norway. Norwegian Mining Museum documents the history of the former Kongsberg Silver Mines. The museum was established in 1938, and opened to the public in 1945. Silver deposits at Kongsberg were first discovered in 1629 with mines were in operation until 1958. Today the former mining area provide a view of the historic mining operation. The museum documents the development of mining throughout the period the silver mines in Kongsberg were in operation. The cultural heritage dates from the 18th century, but there are traces of mining through the entire period of operation. The mining captain’s house, cottages, stables, foundation for a water wheel as well as the system of aqueducts and dams are preserved. Situated close to the entrance of the silver mines are shelters once used by the miners. These buildings were built between the period 1867 and 1874. A mine train pulled by diesel locomotives takes visitors 342 meters below the surface and 2.3 km into the mountain. Inside the former mine there is a guided tour. An interesting device is the mine elevator which was built in 1881.

Eikeren

Eikeren or Eikern is a long and deep lake in the municipalities of Hof in the county of Vestfold and Øvre Eiker in the county of Buskerud, Norway. It is the largest lake in Vestfold. At the eastern end of Vestfold is the village of Eidsfoss. In this area, water flows into Lake Eikeren from the Bergsvann, Vikevann, Haugestadvann and Hillestadvann. Lake Eikeren also receives waterflow from the Hakavikelva and Steinbruelva Rivers. In the western part, Eikeren comes together with the Fiskumvannet in a narrow, strait known as Sundet. Here water flows into Lake Fiskum, located at the top of Eikernvassdraget. Through this strait, water flows at an average of 7 m3 per second. From Lake Fiskum, water runs out into Vestfosselva to Vestfossen. The river then go to Hokksund, where it splits into two river that both flow in the Drammen River. In 2005, Lake Eikeren was developed by the Vestfold Inter Municipal Waterworks,, in order to provide extra drinking water for Vestfold. The other source is Farrisvannet, a lake on the border between the counties of Vestfold and Telemark. Vestfold Inter Municipal Waterworks Authority is a company owned by ten municipalities in Vestfold and is responsible for water supply, water treatment, emergency power supply and the main distribution to its members. During the summer season, Lake Eikeren is served by tourist boat M/S Eikern between Eidsfoss and Vestfossen. The original M/S Eikern steamer was commissioned in 1861. The steam vessel Cappelen was built in 1880 and was used for timber and passenger traffic. In 1903, the steamship Stadshauptmand Schwartz carried regular traffic and provided a link between the Kongsberg Railway and the Tønsberg–Eidsfoss Line. The current vessel M/S Eikern has carried traffic on Lake Eikern since 1997.

Hallingskarvet National Park

Hallingskarvet National Park is a national park in central Norway that was established by the government on 22 December 2006. The park is located in the municipalities of Hol, Ulvik, and Aurland . More precisely, the park comprises the Hallingskarv plateau and the high mountain areas to the west of it. It includes the Vargebreen glacier as well as the valleys of Såtedalen, Lengjedalen, Ynglesdalen, and parts of Raggsteindalen. The national park covers 450 square kilometres of the Hallingskarvet mountain range and hosts large stocks of wild reindeer, an important factor in the establishment of the park. The highest point in the national park is Folarskardnuten which reaches an elevation of 1,933 metres above sea level. The landscape of Hallingskarvet was shaped by multiple ice ages. The park shows the geological history and the connection between this history and the variation in the species living there. It includes areas of special value and which are home to threatened or vulnerable species such as Draba cacuminum and Botrychium lanceolatum . The Bergensbanen railway line runs along the southern boundary of the park. There is no road access to the southern side of the park, so Finse Station, a stop on the railway line, is one of the few ways that people can access this part of the park. The Norwegian County Road 50 runs near the northern boundary of the park.

Gardnos crater

Gardnos crater is a meteorite impact crater in the area known as Nesbyen in Nes municipality in the county of Buskerud in Norway. Gardnos crater is 5 kilometres in diameter, and was created when a meteorite with an estimated diameter of 200 to 300 metres struck 500 million years ago. At first this site was believed to be a volcanic crater, but in 1990 two scientists discovered that it was in fact formed by meteorite impact. The original bedrock in the area was fractured and a powder of crushed rocks was forced into all the fractures. This is the origin of the peculiar rock in this area. It is possible to drive into the centre of the crater, which makes the Gardnos crater one of the worlds most accessible meteorite craters. There are two trails through the surrounding natural region, with information signs describing the unique geology of the area.

Flesberg stave church

Flesberg stave church is a stave church located in Flesberg, Numedal in Norway. It was probably built around 1200. The first written reference to the church is from 1359. The church was originally a single nave church with four free-standing internal posts bearing a raised central roof, surrounded by an ambulatory or aisles on all four sides. It had a narrower chancel, also with a raised central roof, and a semicircular apse. It was surrounded by a gallery loosely connected to the plank walls. In 1735, the chancel and apse as well as the east wall of the nave were removed. The nave was extended eastwards and two transepts were added, making a cruciform plan. The additions were built in horizontal log construction with notched corners. Of the original stave church only three outer walls survived, as the internal posts and the raised roof were eliminated. The church yard is fenced with big slates brought from Haukeli farm during winter seasons. Some slates have iron rings affixed, these rings were used for tying horses during service each farmer had a designated ring for his horse (the oldest dated ring from 1661). The idiosyncratic stone fence is shown on a 1701 painting (the oldest existing painting of a stave church).
