Aleppo (; Arabic: ﺣﻠﺐ‎ / ALA-LC: Ḥalab, IPA: [ˈħalab]) is a city in Syria, serving as the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate. With an official population of 4.6 million in 2010, Aleppo was the largest Syrian city before the Syrian Civil War; however, now Aleppo is probably the second-largest city in Syria after the capital Damascus. Aleppo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world; it may have been inhabited since the 6th millennium BC. Excavations at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari, just south of the old city of Aleppo, show that the area was occupied by Amorites since at least the latter part of the 3rd millennium BC. This is also when Aleppo is first mentioned in cuneiform tablets unearthed in Ebla and Mesopotamia, in which it is a part of the Amorite state of Yamhad, and is noted for its commercial and military proficiency. Such a long history is attributed to its strategic location as a trading center midway between the Mediterranean Sea and Mesopotamia (i.e. modern Iraq). For centuries, Aleppo was the largest city in the Syrian region, and the Ottoman Empire's third-largest after Constantinople and Cairo. The city's significance in history has been its location at one end of the Silk Road, which passed through central Asia and Mesopotamia. When the Suez Canal was inaugurated in 1869, trade was diverted to sea and Aleppo began its slow decline. At the fall of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Aleppo ceded its northern hinterland to modern Turkey, as well as the important railway connecting it to Mosul. In the 1940s, it lost its main access to the sea, Antakya and İskenderun, also to Turkey. Finally, the isolation of Syria in the past few decades further exacerbated the situation. This decline may have helped to preserve the old city of Aleppo, its medieval architecture and traditional heritage. It won the title of the "Islamic Capital of Culture 2006", and has had a wave of successful restorations of its historic landmarks. The Battle of Aleppo (2012–2016) occurred in the city during the Syrian Civil War, and many parts of the city suffered massive destruction. Affected parts of the city are currently undergoing reconstruction.

Deir Semaan

The Church of Saint Simeon Stylites is a historical building located about 30 km northwest of Aleppo, Syria. It is the oldest surviving Byzantine church, dating back to the 5th century. Built on the site of the pillar of St. Simeon Stylites, a famed hermit monk, the church is popularly known as either Qalaat Semaan , the 'Fortress of Simeon', or Deir Semaan , the 'Monastery of Simeon' . As of June 2011, the Church and surrounding village was designated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as part of the "Ancient Villages of Northern Syria", a World Heritage Site. The Church was held by Islamist extremist groups (including Islamic State) who are opposed to reverence for and existence of shrines and holy sites, both Muslim and Christian raising concerns for its continued existence. On the 28th of May 2015 the church was captured by the Kurdish YPG/YPJ with apparently little damage.

Khusruwiyah Mosque

The Khusruwiyah Mosque is a mosque complex in Aleppo, Syria. It is located southeast of the Citadel. The mosque was commissioned by Khusraw Pasha while he was governor of Aleppo under Sultan Suleiman I. It was designed by the renowned court architect Mimar Sinan. The mosque was almost entirely destroyed by the armed opposition during the Battle of Aleppo in summer 2014.

Hammam Yalbugha

Hammam Yalbugha (Arabic: حمام يلبغا‎‎) is a Mamluk-era public bath ("hammam") in Aleppo, Syria. The hammam is now partially destroyed. It was built in 1491 by the Emir of Aleppo Saif ad-Din Yalbugha al-Naseri. It is located next to the entrance of the Citadel of Aleppo, on the banks of the Quweiq river. The hammam Yalbugha was almost totally ruined during the Syrian war.

Sabaa Bahrat Square

Sabaa Bahrat Square is one of the most important squares in Aleppo, Syria. Located at the intersection of "Abdel Menem Riyad street" with "Al-Mutanabbi" street within the ancient part of the city, the square is an important junction between the old city and modern Aleppo. Many important official buildings are located around the square, including the Aleppo Chamber of Industry, Coral Julia Dumna Hotel and the main entrance of Suweiqa; one of the largest covered markets of the old city. The main Aleppo branches of the local banks are situated along the Al-Mutanabbi street, up to the Sabaa Bahrat square. Abdel Menem Riyad street is home to the main offices of many Syrian political parties as well as to the 16th century mansion of Dar Rajab Pasha. The square is the main rout towards the Great Mosque of Aleppo. The centre of the square is decorated with colourful dancing fountains.

Al-Madina Souq

Al-Madina Souq is the covered souq-market located at the heart of the Syrian city of Aleppo within the walled ancient part of the city. With its long and narrow alleys, al-Madina Souq is the largest covered historic market in the world, with an approximate length of 13 kilometers. It is a major trade centre for imported luxury goods, such as raw silk from Iran, spices and dyes from India and many other products. Al-Madina Souq is also home to local products such as wool, agricultural products and soap. Most of the souqs date back to the 14th century and are named after various professions and crafts, hence the wool souq, the copper souq, and so on. Aside from trading, the souq accommodated the traders and their goods in khans scattered within the souq. Other types of small market-places were called caeserias . Caeserias are smaller than khans in size and functioned as workshops for craftsmen. Most of the khans took their names after their function and location in the souq, and are characterized by beautiful façades and entrances with fortified wooden doors. Al-Madina Souq is part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Many sections of the souq and other medieval buildings in the ancient city were destroyed, ruined or burnt as a result of fighting between the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian Armed Forces beginning on 25 September 2012.

Forty Martyrs Cathedral

The Forty Martyrs Armenian Cathedral of Aleppo, Syria, is a 15th-century Armenian Apostolic church located in the old Christian quarter of Jdeydeh. It is significant among the Armenian churches for being one of the oldest active churches in the Armenian diaspora and the city of Aleppo. It is a three-nave basilica church with no dome. Its bell tower of 1912, is considered to be one of the unique samples of the baroque architecture in Aleppo.

Baron Hotel

Baron Hotel (also Baron's Hotel, Hôtel Baron or Le Baron), is the oldest hotel in Syria and the region. It is located in downtown Aleppo, on Baron street of the Aziziyeh area, next to the National Museum of Aleppo. In November 2014 the hotel was forced to close its doors as the Syrian civil war gripped the city, with the front line separating government and rebel forces just metres away from the building. For over two years there had been almost no paying guests. The fate of the historical artefacts inside the building and the giant Stephens thermometer, with French script, affixed to the front wall since 1917, is unknown.

Junblatt Palace

Junblatt Palace; originally Janpolad Palace, is a palace in Aleppo, Syria, built during the 2nd half of the 16th century by the emir of Kurds in Aleppo and the founder of the Janpolad family; Janpolad bek ibn Qasim. In 1604-1605, it has briefly served a residence for the Ottoman wāli of Aleppo Hussein Pasha Janpolad. The palace is located at al-Bandarah neighbourhood of al-Farafira district within the walls of the Ancient City of Aleppo. According to the Aleppine historian sheikh Kamel al-Ghazzi, emir Janpolad spent one thousand Ottoman gold lira to build the palace. Since 1766, the palace became the property of al-Kawakibi family. In 1814, its served as the residence of the mufti of Aleppo sheikh Hasan Afandi al-Kawakibi. Junblatt Palace is believd to have the largest iwan in Aleppo, decorated with fine qashani ceramic-tiled mosaic wall, depicting several Persian-type inscriptions. Like the vast majority of Arabic traditional houses, the square-shaped courtyard of the palace has a large water fountain in the centre mainly used for wudu. However, many associated external buildings around the palace including a military barack and stables- were ruined during the 1960s.

Sabkhat al-Jabbul

Sabkhat al-Jabbūl or Mamlahat al-Jabbūl or Lake Jabbūl is a large, traditionally seasonal, saline lake and concurrent salt flats 30 km southeast of Aleppo, Syria, in the Bāb District of Aleppo Governorate. It is the largest natural lake in Syria and the second largest lake after the artificial Lake Assad. In 2009 the lake covered about 100 km2 and was relatively stable. The salt flats are extensive and can be seen from space. The area includes the Sabkhat al-Jabbul Nature Reserve, a protected waterfowl site. Today the Sabkhat al-Jabbul exists within a closed basin, but during the Pleistocene the basin filled, overflowed and formed a tributary of the Euphrates. The lake traditionally flooded in the spring shrinking back during the summer and autumn. However, starting in 1988, irrigation projects on adjacent lands started discharging significant amounts of partially saline water into the basin, stabilizing the water table and creating the current lake of 100 km2 .

Liberty Square

The Liberty Square is an important square at the Aziziyah district, downtown Aleppo, Syria. Intersected by Yusuf al-Azma street from the south to the north, the square is considered to be the beginning of Qustaki al-Himsi street and the end of Faris al-Khoury street from the east, where the church of Saint Michael the Archangel of the Melkite Greek Catholics is located. The main entrance of the Aleppo Public Park is located at the western side of the square on "Majd Al-Deen Al-Jabiri" street. It is the starting point of many other narrow streets-branches as well. The Liberty Square of Aleppo is surrounded with many restaurants, bars and cafés. Since 1971, the bust of the Syrian poet and writer Qustaki al-Himsi is erected at the centre of the square.

Al-Adiliyah Mosque

Al-Adiliyah Mosque is a mosque complex in Aleppo, located to the west of the Citadel, in "Al-Jalloum" district of the ancient city, few meters away from Al-Saffahiyah mosque. The mosque was built by the Ottoman governor of Aleppo Muhammed Pasha in 1551 or 1557. It is considered to be one of the oldest mosques of the Ottoman period in Aleppo after the Khusruwiyah Mosque. The complex is built at the southern entrance of the covered suq of ancient Aleppo. The name of the mosque is derived from the Arabic word al-Adl meaning: justice- as the complex is located adjacent to the former House of Justice or Dar al-Adl of Aleppo. The mosque has a large prayer hall preceded by an arcade, with a dome, a mihrab with local faience tiles.

Al-Otrush Mosque

Al-Otrush Mosque also known as Demirdash Mosque, is a mosque in the Syrian city of Aleppo, located at the south of the Citadel, in "al-Ajam" district of the Ancient City, few meters away from Al-Sultaniyah Madrasa. It was built at the end of the 14th century by the efforts of the Mamluk ruler of Aleppo; Aqbogha al-Otrush. However, the mosque was completed by his successor Demirdash al-Nasiri. The mosque is famous for its decorated façade and its entrance which is topped with traditional oriental motifs and Islamic muqarnas. The minaret of the mosque located to the left of the main entrance, has a round octangular shape. The mosque was renovated in 1922.

Al-Saffahiyah Mosque

The Al-Saffahiyah Mosque is a mosque in Aleppo, located to the south-west of the Citadel, at "Al-Jalloum" district of the ancient city, to the east of Al-Shibani Church-School. The mosque was built in 1425 under the patronage of Ahmed bin Saleh bin Al-Saffah on the ruins of an old mill, during the Mamluk period. The mosque is marked with its single octagonal minaret over the entrance, decorated with the fine carvings of the Mamluk-era architecture. The mosque was partially renovated in 1925.

Tishrin Dam

The Tishrin Dam is a dam on the Euphrates, located 90 kilometres east of Aleppo in Aleppo Governorate, Syria. The dam is 40 metres high and has 6 water turbines capable of producing 630 MW. Construction lasted between 1991 and 1999. Rescue excavations in the area that would be flooded by the dam's reservoir have provided important information on ancient settlement in the area from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A period upward.

Bab Antakeya

Bāb Antakiya formed one of the most important defense gates in Aleppo, protecting the city from the west. Baba Antakiya is located in the centre of the western wall of the old city of Aleppo, and its name was derived from Antioch, the capital of ancient Syria, as the gate was the main exit which was leading to the city of Antioch. It is one of the oldest gates built due to its strategic site thus going through several construction periods. Sayf al-Daula rebuilt the gate using its antique foundations and the Fatimids restored it during the 11th century. It went through periodical repairs and restorations until 1422. The Bab is well preserved today with both its towers still intact. The two massive Ayyubid defense towers were built with thick stone walls into which the deep arrow slits were discreetly inserted. The gate contains the shrine of Sheikh Ali al-Rumi in the southern tower. This gate was considered the main bab of the city during the Byzantine rule, but it lost its importance gradually during the Islamic rule, until the Mamluk era when the gate regained its vital role as a main landmark for the old city. The gate is topped by two rising parallel towers, being located under the one which is on the right side due to defensive tactics, consisted of white stones of big sizes . The main axis of the old Suq of Aleppo is originated from the Antakeya gate. During the Battle of Aleppo in the Syrian civil war the gate became a key target for rebel forces who tried to take the old Citadel.

Bab al-Faraj

Bab al-Faraj (Arabic: باب الفرج‎‎) (Gate of Deliverance) or Bab al-Faradis was one of the 9 main gates of the ancient city walls of Aleppo, Syria. It was located at the northern side of the ancient city. The gate was ruined in 1904. Some remains are still found at the north-eastern part of the gate.

Al-Shuaibiyah Mosque

Al-Shuaibiyah Mosque also known as al-Omari, al-Tuteh and al-Atras mosque, is the oldest mosque in Aleppo, Syria. Built in 637, it is one of the oldest mosques in the Levant. It is located in the western part of the Ancient City of Aleppo, within the historic walls of the city, near the Gate of Antioch.

Great Mosque of Aleppo

The Great Mosque of Aleppo or the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo is the largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city of Aleppo, Syria. It is located in al-Jalloum district of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a World Heritage Site, near the entrance to al-Madina Souq. The mosque is purportedly home to the remains of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. It was built in the beginning of the 8th century. However, the current building dates back to the 11th through 14th centuries. The minaret was built in 1090, and was destroyed during fighting in the Syrian civil war in April 2013.

Central Synagogue of Aleppo

The Central Synagogue of Aleppo,, also known as the Great Synagogue of Aleppo, Joabs Synagogue or Al-Bandara Synagogue, has been a Jewish place of worship since the 5th century C.E. in Aleppo. When it functioned, it was considered the main synagogue of the Syrian Jewish community. The synagogue is noted as being the location where the Aleppo codex was housed for over five hundred years until it was removed during the 1947 Aleppo pogrom, during which the synagogue was burned. This synagogue still stands.

Aleppo Citadel Museum

The Aleppo Citadel Museum is an archaeological museum located in the city of Aleppo, Syria, within the historic Citadel of Aleppo. It was opened in 1994 in the building of Ibrahim Pasha military barracks of the citadel, built in 1834. It occupies an area of 754 m² at the northern part of the citadel. The museum is home to a large number of archaeological remains found in the citadel and belong to ancient civilizations.

Also located near this mosque on Mount Jawshan, is a mashad known as Mashad al-Siqt . As the prisoners of Karbalā were passing through Aleppo, one of wives of Husayn had a miscarriage. The still-born child was named Muhsin, and buried at this place.

Al-Sahibiyah Mosque also known as Fustoq mosque, is a 14th-century mosque in Aleppo, Syria. It is located in the heart of the Ancient City of Aleppo, within the historic walls of the city, near the Khan al-Wazir, in front of Al-Matbakh al-Ajami palace.

Al-Firdaws Madrasa

The external walls of the mosque are decorated with stones in the form of traditional Quran pages, inscribed with some verses from the Ar-Rahman sura.

Tawhid Mosque is a contemporary mosque in Aleppo, Syria, located on Khalil al-Hindawi street, on the right bank of the Queiq River. It was opened in 1981 and features a combined style of the early Islamic Abassid architecture and modern mosques. It has a large central dome surrounded with 4 smaller domes and 4 circular minarets. It is surrounded with two churches and a small park. The mosque is notable for being built in a largely Christian-populated district of Aleppo.

Al-Hamadaniah Olympic Swimming and Diving Complex is a water sports centre in Aleppo, Syria, featuring an outdoor Olympic size swimming and diving pools with a seating capacity of 1,340 spectators. The complex was opened in 2009, as part of the al-Hamadaniah Sports City. The swimming complex has a total area of 12,500 m².
