St Aloysius Convent of Mercy

St Aloysius Convent of Mercy is a former Catholic convent located on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia, part of a larger site owned by the Church. This building is a part of the complex built by the Sisters of Mercy to provide accommodation and a school. Reverend Matthew Gibney, the Lord Bishop of Perth, laid the foundation stone of this building in July 1903. Gibney returned for the official opening ceremony in September of the same year. The construction of the convent was almost entirely funded by the family of Daniel Connor, who had been a very devout Catholic. The building is an imposing two storey red brick structure with red corrugated iron roof. Rendered bands extend around the building and along the window sills. There are gabled wings to each end, with half timbering creating a symmetrical façade. There is a two storey panelled side extension joining the building to the current St John the Baptist Church.

Kirk's

Kirk's Cottage on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia was built between 1852 and 1856 by convict labour. In 1852 urgent accommodation was required for pensioner guards who had accompanied the first shipments of convicts to Western Australia and on to the Toodyay Convict Hiring Depot. Pensioner Guards were retired army or police officers who were given pay and benefits to travel with convicts on the transportation ships from England. Upon arrival most of them continued to serve the Convict Establishment as guards. Land allotments were marked out on the northern portion of Toodyay's town site. Pensioner guard Francis Kirk was allocated this site and he and his family were the first occupants of the modest cottage that was built. As is the case with the nearby Hackett's Cottage its original appearance has been modified. Today the building is at a lower level than the road and is a single storey brick residence with iron hipped roof, a side weatherboard extension which extends around to the rear and timber framed windows. There is a verandah to the front, the brickwork is laid in Flemish Bond and there is a prominent chimney which has an ornate flue.

Freemasons Hotel

Freemasons' Hotel is a historic building on Stirling Terrace in Toodyay, Western Australia. It was built for William Tregoning, and originally licensed in 1861 as the Newcastle Hotel. In 1977 the building was classified by the National Trust and given a permanent listing on the Register of the National Estate. It is also listed on the Australian Heritage Database. The building is a double height red brick structure with corrugated iron roof and a decorative parapet of classical influence. There are verandahs at ground and first floor levels with timber posts and balustrades. The ground level also has an additional set back verandah with brick columns and arches. There is a rear verandah to both upper and lower levels and a single storey brick extension. The building's Federation Filigree façade was restored in 1994.

St Stephen's Anglican Church

St Stephen's Anglican Church on Stirling Terrace, Toodyay, Western Australia, was one of the earliest significant public buildings constructed in the town then named Newcastle. It was built by George Henry Hasell, assisted by stonemason Esau Wetherall and a shingle splitter with the surname MacKnoe. On 9 May 1862 Matthew Hale, in his role as Lord Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Perth, consecrated the church and it opened for services. A separate bell tower made of bush timber was later constructed and this remains on site. The bell was dedicated in December 1910 by Charles Riley, Bishop of Perth. The first minister was Charles Harper. The bell was made by Fred Metters & Co., Perth and donated by Charles Maxwell Lukin. On 20 June 1915 a memorial service was held at St Stephen's for William Henry Strahan who had been killed in the ANZAC action at Gallipoli during World War I. Strahan was the first Toodyay casualty of the war. Widespread grief saw a large attendance at his funeral—roughly 1/5 of the district's population. The shingled roof was replaced with corrugated iron in the mid 1940s. On 18 March 1948 the sanctuary of St Stephen's church was consecrated by Archbishop Robert Moline, as a memorial to Charles Augustus Lee Steere and Roderick Yelverton Lee Steere, who lost their lives in World War II. The extension was designed by architect F.G.B. Hawkins and built by contractor Mr. Hawkins with bricks from the demolished Nunyle Agricultural Hall. A flooded gum , said to be over 400 years old, towers over the church. The trimming of the upper branches of the tree, giving it a somewhat lopsided appearance, was to prevent it striking overhead power lines which have since been run underground. Although the removal of the tree has been threatened in the past by development it is now regarded as an icon with its historical significance well appreciated. The architectural style of the church could be described as restrained Gothic with its pointed arched window and door surrounds. There are tall lancet windows to the north and south, with buttresses dividing the north and south façades into evenly spaced bays. The highly pitched roof is today covered by corrugated iron.

Newcastle Hospital

Newcastle Hospital in Toodyay, Western Australia was completed in 1894 and was the only purpose built hospital for the town then known as Newcastle. Construction of this building commenced in 1892 but work stopped before being resumed again in the same year it was completed. The Newcastle Hospital replaced the original public health facility operating out of the 1854 Toodyay Convict Depot infirmary building. In 1896 the new local court house was erected adjacent to the old infirmary. In 1901 the cost of running the hospital was investigated by Dr Thomas Henry Lovegrove in his role as Principal Medical Officer for Western Australia and president of the Central Board of Health. The doctor's salary with house, an orderly's salary and the maintenance of patients (including drugs) were estimated at nearly £300 per year. Only 17 patients were treated in 1901–2. Seriously ill patients were usually taken to Northam hospital, which was much better equipped and only 17 miles (27 km) away. Lovegrove concluded that building the hospital was premature and in 1902 it was closed, with the hospital staff being dismissed and most of the fittings and fixtures being sent to a new hospital in Katanning, Western Australia. An epidemic of diphtheria flared up in the district in late 1906 and so in the following year a wing of the hospital reopened. In 1910 the State Government and the Newcastle Road Board jointly took over the maintenance of the building, which remained operational as a hospital until 1940.
