The Indian Bean Tree, St James Square

St James Square in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales is the site of a historic Indian Bean Tree. The Catalpa bignonioides, a native of the southeastern United States, was planted in the square about 1900. It was joined by the Monmouth War Memorial in 1921. After more than one hundred years of presiding over the square, the tree became the focus of controversy when it was condemned by the Monmouthshire County Council in 2005. The decision was met with fierce community opposition. The parties involved resolved their differences in 2006, and the tree received treatment, albeit some of it unauthorized. By 2011, the Indian Bean Tree in St James Square was flourishing.

Great Castle House

Great Castle House is a former town house built on the site of part of Monmouth Castle in Wales. Amongst the towns most significant buildings, it has a Grade 1 listing and is one of 24 sites on the Monmouth Heritage Trail. The house is located on Castle Hill, off Agincourt Square in Monmouth town centre. Described as "a house of splendid swagger outside and in", it was completed in 1673 for Henry Somerset, the 3rd Marquis of Worcester, who was Lord President of the Council of Wales and the Marches. It later became an Assize Court, until the Court moved to the new Shire Hall in 1725. It has been the Headquarters of Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers since the mid-19th century, and contains the Regimental Museum.

Little Castle House

Little Castle House is a Grade II Listed building in Monmouth Wales. Also known as The Dispensary it was one of Monmouths early medical facilities. It was founded to provide free advice and medicine for the poor, and to encourage vaccination. The support and financing was largely from donations, concerts, fees and exhibitions. Three doctors were appointment annually after a table of their kills and cures had been examined. The dispensary had an income of around £200 annually and dispensed around £160 worth of medicine each year. It continued as such until in 1868 when Monmouth Hospital and Dispensary was opened at Cartref, St James Square, in 1868.

The Nelson Rooms

The Nelson Rooms is a grade II listed building in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It is in the historic Glendower Street and Agincourt Street neighbourhood, within the medieval town walls. The building initially served as a gymnasium and was a gift from Lady Llangattock to the town of Monmouth. In 1924, after the benefactors death, it reopened as the Nelson Museum, and showcased the collection of memorabilia related to Admiral Horatio Nelson that had been amassed by the baroness. The Nelson Museum moved to new quarters at the Market Hall in 1969. The former gymnasium and museum is now an apartment building.

Chippenham Mead

Chippenham Mead is a public park in Monmouth, Wales that has been also known as Chippenham Fields, Chippenham Park, Chippenham Gate and Monmouth Sports Ground. There is a sports area within the park called Chippenham Sports Ground. The park is located between Blestium Street and Chippenham Gate Street, Monmouth. Chippenham Sports Ground, also known as Little Chippenham, is run by Monmouth Sports Association and is made up of and used by Monmouth Tennis Club, Monmouth Bowls Club and bowling green, Monmouth Cricket Club, Monmouth Rugby Football Club and Monmouth Town F.C., known as The Kingfishers. It is the Welsh base for Cricketers with a Disability.

The Kymin

The Kymin, or Kymin Hill, is a hill overlooking Monmouth, in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is located approximately one mile east of Monmouth, on the eastern side of the River Wye and adjacent to the border with Gloucestershires Forest of Dean and England. The summit of the hill, about 800 feet above sea level, is known for its neo-classical monuments, built between 1794 and 1800. The site is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty .

Statue of Charles Rolls

The memorial statue to the aviation pioneer Charles Rolls stands in front of the Shire Hall in Agincourt Square, Monmouth, Wales. The 8 feet high bronze statue was designed by Sir William Goscombe John, R.A. and Sir Aston Webb, R.A. designed the pink granite plinth. The statue is a Grade II* listed structure. Charles Stewart Rolls was the third son of John Rolls, 1st Baron Llangattock, and his family home was The Hendre to the north of the town, where Sir Aston also designed the Cedar Library. The Rolls family were significant landowners in the nineteenth century and major benefactors to the town and county. The statue was proposed by the Borough Council in June 1910, to celebrate Charles Rolls two way crossing of the English Channel. However, Rolls was killed in an accident at an airfield near Bournemouth on the south coast of England the following month. The statue and plaques around the plinth therefore commemorate his life achievements. The statue was cast by the A.B. Burton foundry at Thames Ditton, who produced many bronze statues around the world, including the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus, and the 38 ton "Peace Quadriga" on Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner, London. It was unveiled on 19 October 1911, by Colonel Lord Raglan, C.B. accompanied by a large gathering of dignitaries and the public. Rolls is seen inspecting a purposefully incomplete model of his biplane. The tail plane is the missing element on the model to commemorate the cause of the accident. Shortly before the fatal flight, the tail plane was modified in an attempt to improve control. The main dedication is all in upper case and reads: Erected by public subscription to the memory of the Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls, third son of Lord and Lady Llangattock as a tribute of admiration for his great achievements in motoring ballooning and aviation. He was a pioneer in both scientific and practical motoring and aviation and the first to fly across the channel from England to France and back without landing. He lost his life by the wrecking of his aeroplane at Bournemouth July 12, 1910. His death caused world wide regret and deep national sorrow.

Monmouth Viaduct

The Monmouth Viaduct or Chippenham Meadow Viaduct is a 20-arch 183m red sandstone viaduct, with two 23m steel lattice-girder spans over the river. It carried the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk Pontypool Railway line across the River Wye at Monmouth, Wales. A further river crossing by the Ross and Monmouth Railway was later built nearby. The Coleford, Monmouth, Usk Pontypool Railway was opened in 1857, running from Pontypool to Monmouth Troy. The single-track line was extended in 1861 to Wyesham Halt on the east side of the viaduct. The bridge which was originally planned to carry the line onwards to Coleford. However, the line terminated at Wyesham and was not extended to Coleford as the Great Western Railway and West Midland Railway did not pursue the extension. The bridge was not heavily used until 1876 when the Wye Valley Railway completed its line from Chepstow and south Wales. In 1883 the Coleford Railway was constructed from Wyesham Junction to Coleford but was closed as being uneconomical in 1916. The viaduct was originally planned to be constructed of wood, but the 1852 floods influenced the engineers to change to stone. The building of the viaduct took exactly ten months. It contains 9000 cubic yards of masonry and 3000 cubic yards of concrete. Two arches form the 20m long eastern element of the structure. The bridge was designed by Christopher Firbank and built by Kennards of Crumlin. It was about 50 feet above the water and lay on two 150-foot girders resting on the stone arches. Large crowds assembled to watch the bridge being put into place in 1861. Only the stone parts of the viaduct are extant today.

The Hendre

The Hendre is Monmouthshires only full-scale Victorian country house, constructed in the Victorian Gothic style. It is located in the parish of Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, some 4 miles north-west of the town of Monmouth. Built in the eighteenth century as a shooting box, it was vastly expanded by the Rolls family in three stages throughout the nineteenth century and is most famous as the childhood home of Charles Stewart Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce. The house is Grade II* Listed and is now the clubhouse of the Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club. The Welsh word hendre comes from the old Welsh custom of having two residences: one down in the valley, which was used in winter and the other homestead was up in the mountains, where the family would live over the summer: hafod; haf being the Welsh word for "summer". The custom of dividing the year between two locations.

Chapel House

Chapel House, Hereford Road, Monmouth, Wales, is a Georgian townhouse, described by the architectural historian John Newman, as "the best house in the entire street". The house was designated a Grade II* listed building on 27 June 1952. The building is mid-eighteenth century or earlier and of "seven bays under a hipped roof." The red-brick walls to the side, which give access to a service court and the garden stretching down to the River Monnow are "contemporary". The interior contains plasterwork and a staircase which "echo Troy House and Great Castle House", although John Newman considers that the quality of the interior fittings surpasses those of either. The house was built in 1752. Chapel House is now a boarding house of Monmouth School. It now holds boys from preps 3, 4, form 1, and form 2.

Masonic Hall

The Masonic Hall is a grade II listed building on Monk Street in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It was designed by architect George Vaughan Maddox. The building is believed to mark the site of Monks Gate, part of the original defences of the town of Monmouth. Before its 1846 conversion to the Masonic Hall, the building served as the Monk Street Theatre. After more than 150 years of housing the Loyal Monmouth Lodge No. 457, the Masonic Hall sustained fire and smoke damage from suspected arson. The Lodge of Freemasons housed in the building is the oldest surviving Masonic Lodge in Monmouthshire.

St John's

St Johns is a grade II listed building in the town centre of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It is located in the historic Glendower Street neighbourhood, within the medieval town walls. The eight bedroom home is most remarkable for the rear of the property which features a Coalbrookdale verandah and formal walled garden that have been separately grade II listed with the Cadw/ICOMOS Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in Wales. The villas garden is also registered with the Welsh Historic Gardens Trust.

Great Manson Farm

Great Manson Farm is a property on the northern outskirts of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales, in the Buckholt area. It is in the Manson Lane neighbourhood, within the electoral division of Dixton with Osbaston. During the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, members of the Clarke, Goode, Clark, Dampier, and Morgan families resided at Great Manson Farm, at which time the reported size of the farm varied from 170 to 200 acres. The property is remarkable for the presence of three grade II listed buildings, including a barn with medieval origins.

St Peter's Church

St. Peters Church is a Church of England parish church at Dixton on the banks of the River Wye, about 1 mile north-east of Monmouth, Wales. The church is a Grade II* listed building and the cross in the churchyard is also a listed building and a scheduled monument.

Fiddler’s Elbow National Nature Reserve is a steep sided, woodland national nature reserve of 45 hectares in the Upper Wye Valley to the north of Monmouth in Wales, close to the Wales–England border. The garden is one of 24 sites on the Monmouth Heritage Trail. It is bounded on the south by the line of the medieval town wall through which it is entered via a short underground passageway. The garden is open to the public between April and September on Friday 2–4 p.m.

St James Square

St James Square is a historic square in the town centre of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It is located at the eastern end of Whitecross Street, within the medieval town walls. The area features the Monmouth War Memorial and the controversial, historic Indian Bean Tree. In addition, in 2010, the square was the site of discovery of the first Mesolithic artefacts in Monmouth. St James Square is lined with numerous listed buildings.

Church Street

Church Street is a pedestrianised street in the centre of Monmouth, Wales. It now contains a variety of independent shops, restaurants, commercial art galleries, and the Savoy Theatre. Until the 1830s, when Priory Street was built to bypass it, it was the main thoroughfare into the centre of Monmouth from the north-east, linking the market and the parish church. It was at one time the centre of the towns butchery trade and was known as Butchers Row.

St James Street

St James Street is a historic street in the town centre of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It appears as a segment of Whitecross Street on the 1610 map of the town by cartographer John Speed and is within the medieval town walls. On more recent maps, it extends from St James Square southwest to Almshouse Street. In 2010, the street was the site of discovery of Mesolithic era artefacts. St James Street is lined with numerous listed buildings.

Monmouth town walls and defences

The Monmouth town walls and defences comprise the defensive system of town walls and gates built in Monmouth, Wales between 1297 and the early part of the following century. Wye Bridge Gate, East Gate , Monk's Gate, and Monnow Bridge Gate were access points to the town. West Gate, across Monnow Street, also provided access. Only the Monnow Bridge Gatehouse survives intact, albeit in a substantially modified version from the original.

Druid's Head Inn

The Druid's Head Inn is a grade II listed building in the town centre of Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It is located in the historic Glendower Street and Chippenhamgate Street neighbourhood, within the medieval town walls. The building served as a public house during most of its history, but for the last several decades has been the headquarters of the Monmouth Rugby Football Club.

The Griffin

The Griffin is a public house in Whitecross Street, Monmouth, Wales. The building dates from the 18th Century and it has been grade II listed since 2005. Its name and sign refer to the legendary creature, the griffin. In the 18th century the pub was called The Old Griffin. It was rebuilt in the 1830s and refurbished in the 1990s. The building is situated on the corner of Whitecross Street and St Mary's Street, which were both main thoroughfares for the town until the mid 18th century. The building's rounded entrance was designed to accommodate traffic turning on the tight corner. The Landlady of the pub was once Eleanor Jones. At the turn of the 19th century it was occupied by Charles Ballinger who also produced mineral water, enabling the pub to cater for more temperate drinkers.

The Three Horseshoes is a public house in Drybridge Street in the Overmonnow area of Monmouth, Wales. The pub has also been used as an Inn and also known as The Three Horse Shoes Inn. The Gatehouse, also known as The Gate House, is a public house located next to Monnow Bridge in Monmouth, Wales. The pub was known as the Barley Mow until it changed its name in 1993. It is the only public house in Monmouth located beside a river. The pub has a restaurant area, seated balcony and a function room.

Old Nag's Head

The Old Nag's Head, Old Dixton Road, Monmouth, Wales, is a nineteenth-century public house, with medieval origins, which incorporates a "stone drum tower of the town defences constructed between 1297 and c.1315." The tower is the only "upstanding remains of the town walls of Monmouth." The pub was designated a Grade II* listed building on 26 April 1955, its "*" rating being due to "its interest as an early C19 public house which retains its character as well as a significant portion of a medieval gate-tower." The pub has live music on a Friday evening.

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, in St Mary's Street near the centre of Monmouth, is the earliest post-Reformation Catholic public place of worship to be permitted in Wales. The church is a late Georgian Roman Catholic church with later Victorian additions by the Catholic convert architect Benjamin Bucknall. It has been designated as a Grade II listed building since 15 August 1974, and is one of 24 buildings on the Monmouth Heritage Trail.

St John the Baptist's Church

St John the Baptist's Church is a redundant Anglican church in Llanrothal, Herefordshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II* listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. It stands in a remote position close to the Wales-England border overlooking the River Monnow.

St Mary's Priory Church

St Mary's Priory Church, in Whitecross Street, Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales, is an Anglican church founded as a Benedictine priory in 1075. The current church dates mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. It was designated a Grade II* listed building in 1952. It is one of 24 buildings on the Monmouth Heritage Trail.

Church of St Thomas the Martyr

The Church of St Thomas the Martyr at Overmonnow, Monmouth, south east Wales, is located beside the medieval Monnow Bridge across the River Monnow. At least part of the building dates from around 1180, and it has a fine 12th-century Norman chancel arch, though the exterior was largely rebuilt in the early 19th century. It is one of 24 buildings on the Monmouth Heritage Trail and is a Grade II* listed building.
