Top Attractions in Motherwell

Carfin Grotto

Carfin Lourdes Grotto, a Roman Catholic shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, was created in the early twentieth century. The "Carfin Grotto", as the shrine is locally referred to, was the brainchild of Father, later Canon, Thomas N. Taylor , parish priest of St. Francis Xavier's Parish in the small, mining village of Carfin, which lies two miles east of Motherwell, in the West of Scotland. Following a trip to France's principal Marian shrine at Lourdes, Canon Taylor's vision was to build a religious memorial in honour of Our Blessed Lady based on the template of the Grotto of Massabielle. Realizing this vision was to become his life's work. Since its opening in the early 1920s, the "grotto" has attracted pilgrims in the hundreds of thousands and its environs have been modified and enhanced with rich Catholic symbols and buildings. For the past 90 plus years, the grotto shrine has offered a pilgrimage season with Sunday processions, rosaries, outdoor masses and dedicated Feast Day events which runs annually from early May until late September. Ravenscraig steelworks

The Ravenscraig steelworks, operated by Colvilles and from 1967 by British Steel Corporation, consisted of an integrated iron and steel works and a hot strip steel mill. They were located in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Motherwell was noted as the steel production capital of Scotland, nicknamed Steelopolis. Its skyline was dominated by the gas holder and three cooling towers of the Ravenscraig steel plant which closed in 1992. The Ravenscraig plant had one of the longest continuous casting, hot rolling, steel production facilities in the world before it was decommissioned. Construction of the integrated iron and steel works started in 1954. The steel mill, which was built shortly after, was one of four in the United Kingdom. In 1992, when it closed down, it was the largest hot strip steel mill in Western Europe. The former steelworks and strip mill have now been cleared, and the site is in the process of becoming the new town of Ravenscraig.

Strathclyde Country Park

Strathclyde Country Park is a country park located in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The park covers some 4 km², centred on the artificial Strathclyde Loch. It is located next to the River Clyde between Hamilton and Motherwell. Strathclyde Park forms what used to be known as the Low parks of the now demolished Hamilton Palace and still includes buildings associated with the palace. When the loch was created in the early 1970s it involved the flooding of the old mining village of Bothwellhaugh. The park offers many amenities and attractions such as coarse angling, woodland walks, watersports, and a camping and caravaning site. One of Scotlands theme parks, MDs, is located in the park. Until 1996, the music festival T in the Park was held here. The west side of the park is bounded by the River Clyde, which was diverted when the loch was built in 1975. The original course can be seen between the east loch shore and the island. Across the Clyde is the M74 motorway, which creates a significant level of noise. The east side of the park is quieter, with woodland and paths leading up the slopes to Motherwell. The remains of Bothwellhaugh Roman Fort and a Roman bath house can be seen in the park, where the South Calder Water flows into the loch. There is an arched Roman bridge across the South Calder nearby. The site of the Battle of Bothwell Bridge is to the north west of the park. Although the focus of the park is on recreation, a variety of habitats are present, including wetlands and native woodland. The Greenlink Cycle Path start-off point is located in the park and travels to Motherwell Town Centre. Also, a section of the Clyde walkway, from Glasgow to New Lanark, runs through the park.

Shieldmuir railway station

Shieldmuir railway station is a railway station in the Craigneuk suburb of Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, Scotland, and lies on the West Coast Main Line, although it is not served by mainline services - local commuter services from the station are provided via the Argyle Line by Abellio ScotRail on behalf of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport. The station is close to Wishaw railway station. The bulk of commuters are from the nearby suburbs of Craigneuk and Muirhouse, which it spans the border between. The bridge used to cross the railway also connects the two towns. Although Shieldmuir can be used to reach Wishaw General Hospital by train, it and Wishaw station are both a considerable distance away for any visitors there. The station is served by half-hourly service (more during weekday peak hours, hourly on Sundays) between Lanark and Glasgow Central via Motherwell, Bellshill and Cambuslang. Prior to the December 2014 timetable change, trains ran via Central Low Level to stations on the North Clyde Line but no longer do so - passengers now need to change at Cambuslang or Central to reach these destinations. Shieldmuir is also the northern terminus for the Royal Mail's railway-based distribution system - a large mail depot lies next to the station, from which the Royal Mail operates its fleet of Class 325 mail trains to and from London and Warrington via the WCML. The station is unstaffed and has ramp access to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. It has full CCTV coverage on both platforms and entrances. It can be reached by car from Craigneuk due to its proximity to John Street and Kimberly Street; however there is a relatively lengthy footpath between the station and Shieldmuir Street, Muirhouse. It does not have any official provision for parking and it cannot be directly reached by any of the new private housing estates being built near the site. The local authority proposed in 2005 to either move the entire station almost 1 mile to the north or close it and reopen the former Flemington station nearby (closed in 1965), to cater for the new Ravenscraig development. This plan was subsequently dropped in 2007. Although the station was originally developed to help regenerate this area of Wishaw, which has suffered from the closure of two major businesses (British Steel Corporation's Ravenscraig works, and the Clyde Alloy) its use has recently doubled. However, its remote location led to vandalism and intimidation for users prior to the installation of CCTV there. Proposals to move the station may be met with some opposition though, as the area around the station has recently seen large amounts of house building activity, and closure of the station could affect local house prices. There is no modern town of Shieldmuir, but Shieldmuir Plantation is noted on an 1859 map of the area as having existed between Shieldmuir and Muirhouse coalpits, roughly where the station lies today.
