The Barn Church

The Barn Church, Kew, formally known as St Philip and All Saints, is the first barn church to be consecrated in England. The building, which is not listed, is on the corner of Atwood Avenue and Marksbury Avenue, in an area previously known as North Sheen and now in Kew, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It was constructed in 1929 from a 17th century barn from Oxted in Surrey. The west end was converted in 2002 into a large parish room with a gallery above looking down the length of the building. The sanctuary was refurbished and remodelled in 1998. St Philip and All Saints is part of a joint parish with St Lukes Church, Kew, under the same vicar, Peter Hart. It is a member of the Anglican Communion and Church of England and, locally, is part of Churches Together in Kew. The parish is almost entirely residential and many of the residents work in central London.

Museum of Richmond

The Museum of Richmond in Richmond, London is located in Richmonds Old Town Hall, close to Richmond Bridge. It was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 28 October 1988. An independent museum and a registered charity, the museum, which is supported by Richmond upon Thames Borough Council, was created in 1983 by local residents led by local historian John Cloake . Its first permanent curator was Simon Lace. Its current curator is Natascha Wintersinger. The museums displays, from mediaeval times to the present day, relate to the history of Richmond, Ham, Petersham and Kew which, until local government boundary changes in 1965, formed the Municipal Borough of Richmond . Its rotating exhibitions, education activities and a programme of events cover the whole of the modern borough. The museums highlights include: 16th-century glass from Richmond Palace; a model of Richmond Palace; and a painting, The Terrace and View from Richmond Hill, Surrey by Dutch draughtsman and painter Leonard Knyff, which is part of the Richmond upon Thames Borough Art Collection. The museum publishes a quarterly newsletter and organises a programme of talks. Admission to the museum, which is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, is free.

Doughty House

Doughty House is a large house on Richmond Hill in Surrey, England, built in the 18th century, with later additions. It has fine views down over the Thames, and both the house and gallery are Grade II listed buildings. The house was named after Elizabeth Doughty, who lived there from about 1786, and built St Elizabeth of Portugal Church in The Vineyard, Richmond. It was the residence of the Cook baronets from when it was bought in 1849 by the first baronet until after World War II. A 125-foot-long gallery was added in 1885 for the very important family art collection. The house was damaged by bombing in the Second World War and the 4th baronet moved to Jersey with 30 paintings from the collection. In 2012 the house was on the market with an asking price of £15,000,000.

Richmond Brewery Stores

Richmond Brewery Stores is a building on 18 Petersham Road in Richmond, London, England. Built in red brick, it has a tiled facade with "RICHMOND BREWERY STORES" in white lettering on blue.[1] Further to the south along Petersham Road was the brewery itself. Known as Lansdown Brewery, and operated by D Watney & Son, it was registered in April 1895, but is known to have been in existence at least as early as 1882 when the brewery design practice Davison, Inskipp & Mackenzie was engaged to extend the building. It was acquired by Brandon's Putney Brewery Ltd in 1915 and subsequently closed. In 1926 the disused building became the original Royal British Legion Poppy Factory. In 1950 the toy manufacturer Rovex Plastics Limited, which made plastic toys for Marks and Spencer, bought the building for use as a factory, and the company's own nameplate was placed over "RICHMOND BREWERY STORES" during the firm's use of the building. The building had a splendid view across the Thames to the former Richmond Ice Rink. By 1954, however, it was becoming obvious that the factory was quite inadequate to produce the volume of goods and, following the acquisition by Tri-ang, the factory moved to Margate in Kent in 1954. The Richmond and Twickenham Times reported in November 2014 that the building, now owned by a property developer, will be converted into offices and flats.

Richmond Green

Richmond Green is a recreation area located near the centre of Richmond, a town of about 20,000 inhabitants situated in south west London. Owned by the Crown Estate, it is leased to the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. The Green, which has been described as "one of the most beautiful urban greens surviving anywhere in England", is essentially square in shape and its open grassland, framed with broadleaf trees, extends to roughly twelve acres. It is overlooked by a mixture of period townhouses, historic buildings and municipal and commercial establishments including the Richmond Lending Library and Richmond Theatre.

North Sheen Cemetery

North Sheen Cemetery is a cemetery in Kew in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames . It is managed by Hammersmith and Fulham Council. The cemetery, which adjoins Mortlake Road and Lower Richmond Road, opened in 1909 and is still in use. It is also known as Fulham New Cemetery as it provided burials for the then Metropolitan Borough of Fulham when the old cemetery on Fulham Palace Road was full. It has a grid layout of paths and had a temporary chapel, which was replaced by a small red brick chapel in 1931. The cemetery includes 110 identified graves of Commonwealth service personnel in the First World War and the Second World War and a memorial garden.

Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill in Richmond, London is a hill that rises gently on its northern side from the ancient Thames meadowlands around the site of Richmond Palace up to and slightly beyond the Richmond Gate entrance to Richmond Park, the former royal hunting grounds enclosed by Charles I. The descent southwestwards from this point back down to the upstream meadows is noticeably steeper, although the down gradient is less marked on its southerly and easterly progress through the park itself. This renowned hill offers the only view in England to be protected by an Act of Parliament – the Richmond, Ham and Petersham Open Spaces Act passed in 1902 – to protect the land on and below Richmond Hill and thus preserve the fine foreground views to the west and south. Immortalised in paintings by Sir Joshua Reynolds and J.M.W. Turner, it was described by Sir Walter Scott as "an unrivalled landscape". The scenic panorama may be viewed from Terrace Walk, laid out near the top of the hill in the 18th century. This promenade surmounts the Terrace Gardens and both are Grade II* listed in English Heritages Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. As the town of Richmond developed from its founding in the early 16th century, after Henry VII had established Richmond Palace, the attributes of the hill naturally attracted desirable residential and commercial development – with the result that many substantial properties came and went on the hill over the centuries, some of them with famous or notable persons as owners or occupiers. That situation is still in vogue today. The original homes on Richmond Hill were built in what is now The Vineyard, including Clarence House, Halford House, Michels Almshouses and Vineyard House.

Pools on the Park

Pools on the Park is a Grade II listed swimming pool and leisure facility in Old Deer Park in Richmond, London. Construction on the 6.5 acres site started in 1964 and was completed in 1966; the architect was Leslie Gooday. The pool replaced the previous Richmond baths nearby which had been built in Parkshot in 1882. Pools on the Park is recognised by Historic England as illustrating "the more ambitious use of glazed curtain walling and the post-Wolfenden Report emphasis on providing large banks of spectator seating". The building, which includes 33.3 metre pool and a learner pool inside, and an open-air pool outside, received a Civic Trust award in 1967. The pool is built on land leased from the Crown Estate; the lease is due to expire on 4 April 2016. The pool and leisure facility is operated on behalf of Richmond Council by contractor SpringHealth Leisure.

Athletic Ground

The Athletic Ground, Richmond is a rugby ground, managed by Richmond Athletic Association, home to National League One side Richmond F.C. and the RFU Championship side London Scottish. The first team pitch has a stand capable of seating around 1,000 people, though in the past temporary stands have been erected in the considerable space around the pitch to boost the seated capacity. The original facilities include six other pitches and two bars which are available for hire, a canteen, changing rooms, a physio room, a shop and offices. Part of Old Deer Park, a huge continuous leisure area, the Athletic Ground was bordered by Richmond Swimming Pool, Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club, a gym and health centre, and also a driving range. Three pitches have been marked out on the driving range which closed down in the 1990s as did Richmond Bowls Club which is now used as a play area for neighboring Falcons School. The Athletic Ground is also host to the National Surveyor 7s, Lloyds Insurance 7s, Neptune City 7s, Law Society 7s, Middlesex Club 7s, NABs Media 7s and Rugby Rocks. The complex has considerable parking facilities for its size, and is often used as a stop-off for fans on their way to Twickenham Stadium.

St Matthias Church

St Matthias Church is an Anglican church in Richmond, London. Built in the Victorian Gothic style in 1857, and described by Bridget Cherry and Nikolaus Pevsner as "the grandest church in Richmond", it has been designated a Grade II listed building by Historic England. The architect was George Gilbert Scott. The church is located at the top of Richmond Hill at the intersection of Friars Stile Road, Kings Road, and Church Road. At 195 feet , the spire of the church is a familiar landmark for miles around. The church was renovated in the 1970s. The architects were Hutchison, Locke & Monk.

St Elizabeth of Portugal Church

St Elizabeth of Portugal Church is a Grade II listed Roman Catholic church in The Vineyard, Richmond in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, south west London. It is adjacent to The Vineyard Life Church. Dedicated to a 14th-century queen consort of Portugal, it claims to be oldest standing Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Richmond Synagogue

Richmond Synagogue is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Lichfield Gardens, Richmond, London. It is a member community of the United Synagogue. The synagogue building, designed by Stern Thom Fehler Architects, was opened on 9 March 1987 by Chief Rabbi Sir Immanuel Jakobovits and Rabbi Moshe Barron.

The National Archives is both a non-ministerial government department and an executive agency of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport of the United Kingdom. It is "the UK government's official archive, containing 1,000 years of history". Lady Haig's Poppy Factory in Edinburgh was established in 1926 and makes approximately five million remembrance poppies each year.

Richmond Cemetery

Richmond Cemetery is a cemetery on Lower Grove Road in Richmond in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England. The cemetery opened in 1786 on a plot of land granted by an Act of Parliament the previous year. The cemetery has been expanded several times and now occupies a 15-acre site which, prior to the expansion of London, was a rural area of Surrey. It is bounded to the east by Richmond Park and to the north by East Sheen Cemetery, with which it is now contiguous and whose chapel is used for services by both cemeteries. Richmond cemetery original contained two chapels—one Anglican and one Nonconformist—both built in the Gothic revival style, but both are now privately owned and the Nonconformist chapel today falls outside the cemetery walls after a redrawing of its boundaries. Many prominent people are buried in the cemetery, as are 39 soldiers who died at the South African Hospital in Richmond Park during the First World War and many ex-servicemen from the nearby Royal Star and Garter Home. These residents are commemorated by the Bromhead Memorial, which lists the names of those who are not commemorated elsewhere, while the South African soldiers are commemorated by a cenotaph designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, derived from his design of the Cenotaph on Whitehall in central London. The war graves and the cenotaph are the responsibility of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Richmond, The American International University in London is a private non-profit, liberal arts university located in London, United Kingdom and established in 1972. It is one of nine private universities (and one of six non-profit) in the country. The university's degrees are accredited in the United States by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, and are validated in the UK by the Open University Validation Services (OUVS). It is currently the only university in the UK to enjoy accreditation in both the UK and US for its degrees. Richmond hopes to achieve taught degree awarding powers (TDAP) in the UK by the end of 2016. Richmond's Business School is an accredited Higher Education Partner of the Chartered Management Institute while its Psychology degree is accredited by the British Psychological Society giving Richmond graduates the opportunity to gain Graduate and/or Chartered Membership of the Society and access to the widest range of training, development and employment opportunities. The university is one the most international universities in the UK, with some 70% of its students coming from over 100 countries outside of the UK. 52% of its students come from the US, 23% from the UK and the rest from across the world. It is one of eight members of the newly formed Independent Universities Group, whose objective is to differentiate between their academic credentials and the more commercial elements of the alternative sector.

Richmond Palace

Richmond Palace was a royal residence on the southern bank of the River Thames, upstream of the Palace of Westminster, to which it lay nine miles south-west. It was erected about 1501 by Henry VII of England, formerly known as Earl of Richmond, in honour of which the manor of Sheen had recently been renamed as "Richmond", later to become Richmond upon Thames. It replaced a former palace, itself built on the site of a manor house appropriated by the Crown some two centuries before. In 1500, a year before the construction of the new Richmond Palace began, the name of the town of Sheen, which had grown up around the royal manor, was changed to "Richmond" by command of Henry VII. However, both names, Sheen and Richmond, continue to be used, not without scope for confusion. Curiously, todays districts of East Sheen and North Sheen, now under the administrative control of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, were never in ancient times within the manor of Sheen, but were rather developed during the 19th and 20th centuries in parts of the adjoining manor and parish of Mortlake. Richmond remained part of the County of Surrey until the mid-1960s, when it was absorbed by the expansion of Greater London. Richmond Palace was a favourite home of Queen Elizabeth, who died there in 1603. It remained a residence of the kings and queens of England until the death of Charles I in 1649. Within months of his execution, the Palace was surveyed by order of Parliament and was sold for £13,000. Over the following ten years it was largely demolished, the stones and timbers being re-used as building materials elsewhere. Only vestigial traces now survive, notably the Gate House. The site of the former palace is the area between Richmond Green and the River Thames, and some local street names provide echoes of the former Palace, including Old Palace Lane, Old Palace Yard and The Wardrobe.

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Richmond is a Roman Catholic church in Sheen Road, Richmond, London. It serves the East Sheen parish in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark and, as it is close to Richmond's boundary with East Sheen, is often known as Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, East Sheen. It was the first church to be designed by architect F G Broadbent (of Goodhart-Rendel, Broadbent and Curtis). The foundation stone was laid in November 1953 by the Rt Reverend Monsignor Cyril Cowderoy, Roman Catholic Bishop of Southwark. The church opened on 9 May 1954 and was expanded in 1963. The consecration, by Archbishop Cyril Cowderoy, did not take place until June 1971. A new parish hall was built in 1992. The church became a parish in its own right in 1959. Its priest is Monsignor William Saunders.

Bethlehem Chapel

Bethlehem Chapel, Richmond is an independent Calvinistic chapel on the east side of Church Terrace in Richmond, London. Built in 1797, the small one-storey stuccoed building is Grade II* listed. It still has its original galleried interior with pews and pulpit.

Christian Fellowship in Richmond is a church that meets at Halford House, a Grade II listed building in Halford Road, in the centre of Richmond, south-west London. In 1951 a group of young people gathered to pray in Richmond, which led to the founding of the church. The house was subsequently purchased in 1954.

First Church of Christ, Scientist, Richmond, is a church on Sheen Road, Richmond, London. It is a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts, founded in 1879.

Richmond and Putney Unitarian Church

Richmond and Putney Unitarian Church is a Unitarian church in Ormond Road, Richmond, London. The church building, dating from 1896, and designed by the architect T Locke Worthington, includes an apse with five stained glass lancers, dating from 1912, by Morris & Co. The Putney congregation merged into the Richmond congregation in 1985. A rear extension designed by Kenneth Tayler was opened in 1966. The Putney Unitarian Church congregation had met at the Wandsworth Unitarian Church, which was expropriated in 1967 for a road-widening project. Their new church on the Upper Richmond Road opened in 1968. After the Putney congregation combined with Richmond, that building, also designed by Kenneth Tayler, was sold to the All Saints Liberal Catholic Church.
