Kallayi

Kallai is a small town on the banks of Kallai River which links with the Chaliyar river on the south by a man-made canal. It is in the Kozhikode district of Kerala in south India and is noted for timber trading. During the late 19th century early 20th centuries, the Chaliyar River was extensively used as a waterway for carrying timber from the forest areas in and around Nilambur to the various mills in Kallai near Kozhikode . Rafts made of logs were taken downstream during the monsoon season to Kallai, where these were sawn to size in the timber mills dotting the banks of the river. During this period, Kallai was one of the most important centers in the world for the timber business. The place was noted for woods of superlative strength and durability like teak, rosewood etc. Towards the second half of the 20th century, the activity declined drastically as tree felling was banned or strictly controlled with a view to stop deforestation. Many mills still operate in Kallai, though with far less output. Many have now closed down. Kallayi Road starts from Palayam junction in the very heart of old Kozhikode. The first junction towards the south is Pushpa Junction which connects to Mankavu on the east and Kuttichira Beach on the west. The road continues to the south with landmarks like Paico Bookstall, Marzook College and the Kallayi Library. Panniyankara junction has a unique colonial building built in 1902 and called Princess of Wales Dispensary which is now converted into a homeo clinic. Panniyankara police station stands opposite to this clinic. Kannanchery, Nallalam and Areekkad are the next towns in the Kallayi Road. The SAIL-SCL steel factory and VKC Hawaii and the major industries in this area.

Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a Hindu temple in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. Dedicated to the god Ganesa, it is a popular pilgrimage site and tourist destination in Puducherry. The temple is of considerable antiquity and predates French occupation of the territory. During the tenure of Dupleix, there were attempts to destroy the temple but the temple was finally spared owing to strong protests from the Hindu population and the threat of British and Maratha invasion of the territory. Manakula Vinayagar Temple was in existence before the French came and settled in Pondicherry i.e. before 1666. According to mythology, Lord GANESHA is named in 16 types based on his various forms out which this god facing the east cost near Bay of Bengal it has been named as Bhuvaneshar Ganapathy, now called as Manakula Vinayagar. In Tamil Manal means sand and Kulam means pond near the sea, earlierly which was full of sand around pond. So the people called the god as Manal Kulathu Vinayagar . Later it is named as MANAKULA VINAYAGAR.

Varadharaja Perumal Temple

Varadaraja Perumal temple in the South Indian union territory of Puducherry, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. It is located heritage town region of the city. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is a storehouse of Chola architecture. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines. The temple has a five tiered rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower. The temple is originally believed to have been built by the Cholas during the 11th century, with later expansion from the Pandyas. The temple follows Vaikasana Agama tradition of worship. Four daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the ten day annual Brahmostavam during the Tamil month of Chittirai and five day Pavitrotsavam during Avani and 25 day Ramar festival during chittirai being the most prominent. The temple is maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India as a protected monument.

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) is a medical school in India. It is located at Pondicherry, the capital of the union territory of Puducherry, in southern India. JIPMER is an Indian central government funded institute with autonomy to run its internal administration. JIPMER is both an educational institute that imparts undergraduate and postgraduate medical training and a working hospital that provides inexpensive medical care to a large number of patients. JIPMER is an institute of national importance and a tertiary care referral hospital that is under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. JIPMER is a residential medical institution with its own campus spread over 195 acres (0.79 km2). It has about 200 faculty and 360 resident physicians and over 3,000 nursing, administrative and support staff. Every year it admits 150 undergraduate students and 200 postgraduate students. JIPMER has started the work of its second superspeciality block (SSB-II), JIPMER International School of Public-health. JIPMER is partnering with other institutions, including Harvard School of Public Health, to exchange faculty, educational tools, research and data on public health. JIPMER's tie-up with the Harvard School of Public Health is part of the larger MoU between the American medical school and the Indian ministry of health and family welfare. The Telemedicine Services centre of JIPMER entered into collaboration with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), South Korea and has started using Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN).Since, JIPMER is a Member of TEIN Network, the hospital can interact and share knowledge with European and Asian Countries.To begin with, on February 15, 2016 the personnel of JIPMER interacted over Video Conferencing using TEIN Network with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH) South Korea. JIPMER thus became the first centre to use the Telemedicine services for the purpose.The Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN) uses the ICT technologies to increase regional cooperation with Asian countries and to bridge the digital divide of less developed regions. It connects universities and research institutions with high capacity Internet network to increase the exchanges of knowledge among them and make big international research projects real. JIPMER has also started the works of offsite hospital in Karaikal.

Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences

The Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) is a multi-specialty hospital and well reputed teaching institute at Kalapet, in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. The college has been approved for full recognition by MCI for 150 seats for MBBS degree granted by the Pondicherry University. The PIMS is a unit of the Madras Medical Mission, a charitable society promoted by the members of the Malankara Orthodox Christian community that runs the well known MMM hospital in Chennai. PIMS is spread across 32 acres with excellent infrastructure. Faculties have been drawn from all over India. PIMS has six Health Centres, covering urban and rural population in and around Puducherry serving its people with the aim of prevention and early management. The Hospital is currently administered by Director-Principal Dr. Renu Gboy Varghese.

Karaikal Airport

Karaikal Airport is a greenfield airport under construction at Karaikal, in the Union territory of Puducherry, India. It was touted to become the first airport in the country to be built entirely with private capital. However, execution of the project has been delayed due to paucity of funds. Construction work is expected to be completed before June 2018. The project, proposed with 100% private ownership for public use, received in-principle clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation in February 2011. Construction work was scheduled to commence in May 2013. Karaikal's Air Traffic Control, however, will be operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The Airport, spread across 562 acres, is being developed by Karaikal Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Super Airport Infrastructure Private Limited. The first phase of construction initially envisaged the construction of an 1800-metre runway and a terminal building capable of handling 250 passengers during peak hours at an expense of Rupees 60 crore. The airport was expected to handle airliners like the Boeing 737. However, due to delays in land acquisition, the first phase will now have a 1250 metre long runway, suitable for the operation of 30 seater aircraft. The company plans to expand the airport after five years, extending the runway to 2600 metres and increasing terminal building capacity to 500 passengers per hour. A further expansion is planned ten years down the line with a 3500-metre runway and a passenger capacity of 1,000 per hour. Besides serving Karaikal, the Airport will bring air connectivity to the various pilgrim centres including Thirunallar, Velankanni, Nagore and various temple towns including Kumbakonam, Mayiladuthurai, Thirumanancheri, Thirukadayur and Point calimere (Kodikkarai) as well as the historic sites of Tarangambadi(also known as Tranquebar), Poompuhar and Vedaranyam (Thirumaraikkadu).
