Top Attractions in Cheltenham

The Wilson

The Wilson, formerly known as Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, was opened in 1899. It offers free admission, and has a programme of special exhibitions. It was rebranded The Wilson in 2013 after the building was extended. The museum is housed in a Regency building on Clarence Street, designed as the Cheltenham Public Library by architect William Hill Knight, who also designed the Cheltenham Synagogue and Montpellier Walk. Baron de Ferrieres, a former Mayor and Liberal MP for Cheltenham, gave 43 important paintings, mostly from Belgium and the Netherlands, to the town. He also donated £1,000 towards the building of a gallery in which to display them. The Museum was opened in 1907 in the adjacent former Schools of Art and Science. A major extension to the building by Hugh Casson was opened by the Princess Royal in September 1989, where the main entrance to the gallery is now situated. The museum is particularly noted for its Arts and Crafts collection of furniture, textiles, ceramics, carvings, silver and jewellery which is recognised as an outstanding collection of international importance for which the Art Gallery Museum has received Designated status. Cheltenhams history is well represented, and in addition there are paintings spanning four centuries, oriental collections of pottery and costume, and archaeological treasures from the neighbouring Cotswolds. The Edward Wilson gallery shows the life of the Antarctic explorer who perished with Scott on his expedition to the South Pole in 1912.

Pittville Pump Room

The Pittville Pump Room was the last and largest of the spa buildings to be built in Cheltenham. The well from which the Pump Rooms waters originate was first exploited by Henry Skillicorne around 1740, about 25 years after the waters were first discovered in 1716. After the visit to Cheltenham in 1788 of King George III, the town became increasingly fashionable. In the 1820s the local landowner Joseph Pitt determined to develop the northern part of the town as Pittville, of which the Pump Room and its spa were to form an important element as part of a pleasure garden. The Pump Room was built by the architect John Forbes between 1825 and 1830. It is a Grade I listed building standing at the northern end of Pittville Lawn with landscaped grounds running down to a lake. The building contains the original Pump, made of marble and scagliola, to which the waters are today fed by electric pumping. The building has a colonnade of Ionic columns; the interior houses a ballroom on its ground floor. Further Ionic columns support a gallery under a dome from which music might be played; on upper floors there were a billiard room, library and reading room. Above the colonnade are three statues, by Lucius Gahagen, erected in 1827, of the goddess Hygieia, Aesculapius and Hippocrates. The Pump Room and its grounds were managed during the 19th century by a succession of lessees, who offered the typical fare of pleasure gardens including menageries, exhibitions and balloon ascents. However the concession did not prove lucrative. Eventually Pitt himself went bankrupt and in 1890 the Room and the grounds passed into the ownership of the town council. They are now owned by Cheltenham Borough Council, which has continued to use them for public events. The Pump Room is frequently used as a concert hall, especially during the Cheltenham Music Festival. At one time the upper floor housed a Museum of Fashion. Following elections in 2007 the incoming Council discussed the possibility of selling the Pump Room but after widespread protests this proposal was later dropped in favour of a limited privatization which would retain the buildings public use.

Cheltenham Racecourse

Cheltenham Racecourse is a racecourse for horse racing events, located at Prestbury Park, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. Its most prestigious meeting is the Cheltenham Festival, held in March, which features several Grade I races including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and World Hurdle. The racecourse has a scenic location in a natural amphitheatre just below the escarpment of the Cotswold Hills, at Cleeve Hill, with a capacity of 67,500 spectators. The racecourse also has its own steam railway station, although this no longer connects to the national rail network but has since rather been the current southern terminus of the preserved Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. The main racecourse has two separate courses alongside each other, the Old Course and the New Course. The New Course has a tricky downhill fence and a longer run-in for steeplechases than the Old Course. Hurdle races over two miles on the New Course also have a slight peculiarity in that most of the hurdles are jumped early on in the race with only two hurdles being jumped in the last seven furlongs. There is also a cross-country course which is laid out inside the main racecourse and is used for cross-country steeplechases. The racecourse is the home of The Centaur, one of the largest auditoria in the South West of England. This multiple-use complex seats over 2,000 people for conferences and around 4,000 standing for concerts. It is also home to the Steeplechasing Hall of Fame. From 1999 to 2013 the racecourse was the venue for the annual Greenbelt festival and remains the venue for the Wychwood Music Festival. The University of Gloucestershire holds its graduation ceremony and summer ball at the racecourse. From 2008, the racecourse and "The Jockey Club" were in talks with Cheltenham Town F.C. about a possible move to the racecourse. This would have meant the building of a new stadium with a double sided stand, one side in the stadium and the other for watching the races. Talks went on for a while but in December 2011, Cheltenham Town F.C. decided against the move due to the financial gap, which the football clubs chairman Paul Baker described as "in the millions". On 19 July 2013, Cheltenham Racecourse is to have a £45m redevelopment and is to include a new 6,500-capacity grandstand and royal box has been unanimously approved by planners.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is a Grade 1 National Hunt horse race run on the New Course at Cheltenham Racecourse in England, over a distance of 3 miles 2½ furlongs , and during its running there are 22 fences to be jumped. The race is scheduled to take place each year during the Cheltenham Festival in March. The steeplechase, which is open to horses aged five years and over, is the most prestigious of all National Hunt events and it is sometimes referred to as the Blue Riband of jump-racing. Its roll of honour features the names of such chasers as Arkle, Best Mate, Golden Miller, Kauto Star and Mill House. The Gold Cup is the most valuable non-handicap chase in Britain, and in 2014 it offered a total prize fund of £550,000. Since 2014 it has been sponsored by Betfred, after the betting company bought the government-owned Tote in June 2011, but in late 2015 they lost their sponsorship following Jockey Club's and Arena Racing new initiative to not allow bookmaker sponsorships on their tracks that do not offer any contribution to horse racing from their offshore business. Only two weeks later a new sponshorship deal was announced with Timico, an independent internet service provider whose CEO Tim Radford is a horse owner having top chasers like Somersby and Racing Demon associated with his name. Timico also offered an increase of £25,000 to reach a total of £575,000 prize money for the 2016 Gold Cup renewal. The 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup was won for the first time in over 40 years by a novice, Coneygree which only had 3 previous starts over fences.

Everyman Theatre

Everyman Theatre is theatre is based in Regent Street, Cheltenham. There are two stages in the building the 694 seat main stage and the 60 seat Studio Theatre, originally named The Richardson after Ralph Richardson. The Grade II listed building was designed by Frank Matcham and was originally called "The Opera House". It was opened in October 1891 with a performance by Lilly Langtry in Lady Clancarty. The Cheltenham Corporation ran it after World War II until 1960, when it became a community theatre and was renamed The Everyman. It was closed and refurbished from 1983-6. The theatre planned to go under a £3,000,000 refurbishment beginning in early May and opening in mid-September 2011. The work consisted of new seating, painting, plasterwork, and artwork. A book about The Everyman Theatre, A Theatre for All Seasons written by Michael Hasted was released after the refurbishment. It has a foreword written by Stephen Berkoff who himself played many roles in productions based at The Everyman.

Greenbelt Festival

Greenbelt Festival is a festival of arts, faith and justice held annually in England since 1974. Greenbelt has grown from a Christian music festival with an audience of 1,500 young Christians to its current more inclusive festival attended by around 20,000 Christians and those from other faiths and none. The festival regularly attracts the biggest names of Christian music and many mainstream musicians. Those that have played the festival in the past include both new and established musicians, mostly playing rock, folk and pop music. This list encompasses U2, Moby, Cliff Richard, Bruce Cockburn, Martyn Joseph, Steve Taylor, Daniel Amos, Phatfish, Servant, Midnight Oil, Michael Franti and Spearhead, Over the Rhine, Iona, Amy Grant, Miles Cain, Lamb, Kevin Max, Lambchop, Goldie, Jamelia, After the Fire, Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Asian Dub Foundation, The Polyphonic Spree, Aqualung, Dum Dums, The Proclaimers, Daniel Bedingfield, Eden Burning, Duke Special, Why?, Athlete, Sixpence None the Richer and Delirious?. Greenbelt is also a venue for teaching and discussion around the Christian faith, and has attracted a large number of famous Christian speakers, including Rowan Williams who is currently the festival's patron. However, the festival also welcomes anyone who the organisers believe 'speaks for justice', and has recently had Anita Roddick, Peter Tatchell, Bill Drummond and Billy Bragg sharing their thoughts. Greenbelt sees itself as having never been shy of tackling controversial issues and providing a 'safe space for honest debate'. More recently with its links to the NGO Christian Aid, Greenbelt has become heavily involved in campaigns for trade justice. The festival was one of the main catalysts for the huge Jubilee 2000 movement. Greenbelt is also a Christian showcase for performing arts, visual arts and alternative worship.

All Saints' Academy

All Saints' Academy is an academy in Cheltenham, England. The Academy is a church school, in cooperation with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Clifton and the Church of England Diocese of Gloucester. Construction started in April 2010. The Academy opened in September 2011. The project will cost nearly £25 million with £2 million on IT equipment. The school replaced Christ College, which opened as recently as 2007 as the county's first joint Roman Catholic and Church of England school. Christ College had used the premises formerly occupied by St Benedict's but the opportunity of having a newly built school on the site of Kingsmead School and turning the school into an Academy justified making a fresh start with a new name. The school has room to educate 1150 students aged 11-18 and the school's specialisms will be science and sport. All Saints' Academy's principal is Dermot McNiffe. All Saints' Academy was rated 'Good' after an Ofsted inspection in late 2014. In May 2010, an Anglo-Saxon settlement was discovered on the site.

The Victoria Ground

The Victoria Ground is a cricket ground in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1893, when Cheltenham played East Gloucestershire. Gloucestershire played their first first-class match there in 1923 against Glamorgan. Gloucestershire played 19 first-class matches at the ground from 1923 to 1937, playing their only game there in 1937 against Kent in the County Championship. In 1986, Gloucestershire returned to the ground where they played a single first-class match against the Indians during their tour of England. As well as hosting first-class cricket the ground has also hosted a single List-A match between the Gloucestershire Cricket Board and the Nottinghamshire Cricket Board in the 2000 NatWest Trophy. In 1982, the ground held a single international match between Israel and Papua New Guinea in the 1982 ICC Trophy. During the 1986 ICC Trophy, the ground held a further ICC Trophy match between Canada and the Netherlands. In local domestic cricket, the ground is the home venue of Cheltenham Cricket Club.

The Croquet Association, which was formed as the United All England Croquet Association in 1897, is the national governing body for the sport of croquet in England. Until 1974 the association was responsible for croquet in the whole of the United Kingdom. The Scottish Croquet Association, formed in 1974, now has responsibility for croquet in Scotland. At the 2013 AGM the association formally relinquished control of the game in the other parts of the United Kingdom. Presidents of the association have included Sir Compton Mackenzie, who was President from 1953 to 1966. The association controls the rules of the game, in conjunction with the croquet associations of Australia, New Zealand and the United States. It also controls the regulations of tournaments for its member clubs. The Open Championship of croquet originally dates back to 1867, but after a hiatus during the years 1883-1896 was reintroduced by the Croquet Association.
