La Candelaria

La Candelaria is a historic neighborhood in downtown Bogotá, Colombia. It is the equivalent to the Old City in other cities. The architecture of the old houses, churches and buildings has Spanish Colonial, Baroque and art deco styles. It houses several universities, libraries and museums.

Bolívar Square

The Bolívar Square is located in the heart of the historical area of Bogotá. It has a statue of Simón Bolívar sculpted in 1846 by the Italian Pietro Tenerani, which was the first ever public monument in the city. Plaza Bolívar is also the name given to the main square in every city or town of Venezuela, the native country of Simón Bolívar. On the Northern side of the square is the Palace of Justice, a large International style building where the Supreme Court is housed. The palaces rather modern construction hides a rather turbulent history the first building was built in 1921 but was destroyed by a fire during the Bogotazo in April 1948. A new palace was built on the north side of the Bolívar Square, but was destroyed again in November 1985 by the guerrilla movement M-19 during the "Palace of Justice Siege", while the army tried to take control of the building. The ruins of the building were kept untouched until 1989, when the government decided to construct a third building on the location. On the southern side of the square the National Capitol is located, which is the seat of the Colombian Congress. Its construction was initiated in 1846 but due to the political instability of the country it was not finished until 1926. This building was designed by the English architect Thomas Reed. The original design included a big dome. It was decided not to build the dome to finish the construction on time and not to defy the cathedrals tower. On the west side of the square there is a French style building known as the Liévano building which is the seat for Bogotás Mayor. On the eastern side of the square is the Primary Cathedral of Bogotá, built between 1807 and 1823, and near it is the Holy Chapel, which was built at the end of the 17th century. On the north-east corner is the Vase House, now also known as the Museum of the 20th July, in which occurred the Call for Independence on July 20 of 1810, the first independence attempt from the Spanish rule in Colombia. Finally, on the south-east corner is the Mayor School of San Bartolomé, a secondary school institution, originally a university, established by the Jesuits in 1604, were many national personalities studied. The Camilo Torres little square is the place where some revolutionaries were killed in the Spanish re-conquest of 1816.

Santamaría Bullring

Santamaría Bullring is a bullring in Bogotá, Colombia, and it is currently used for bullfighting, although it has also been used for concerts and other cultural activities. The stadium holds 14,500 people and was built in 1931. This bullring is more commonly known as the Plaza de Toros Santamaría. Outside this bullring there is a statue honoring Pepe Cáceres, the famous Colombian torero. In 2012 the mayor of Bogotá, Gustavo Petro, announced entering into dialogue with the capital community to ban the tradition of bullfighting in the city and give the Santamaría Bullring another use, in addition to denying resources of public enterprises for such parties. Currently it is used for cultural events.

The Maloka Museum is an interactive science museum located in Bogotá, Colombia. Visitors interact with a wide variety of exhibits that explore topics in Science and Technology. The museum has 9 rooms, with different science and technology topics; the Telecommunications Room shows interactive games about Binary System, the Computers language, How does the cellphone work or whats the communication process. The next room is The City, it shows different modules where you can see 3D images of Bogotá with glasses, the development and history of the city and see a model of it where you can see all the buildings in it. The Human is a room where visitors can explore the perfect machine, the human body. The Universe room is one of the most popular rooms in the museum, where visitors can do experiments, such as knowing a persons weight in the planets of Solar System. Petroleum, is other room located in the second floor, there one can see the process of exploring and exploiting that treasure, and its different kinds and characteristics. The Water Room, show you through games the physic and chemical characteristics of that liquid; the others are the Biodiversity and Boys Girls room. The museum has an Activity Zone with math games and activities too. The museum has a dome theater where documentaries are shown.

Colombian National Museum

The National Museum of Colombia is the National Museum of Colombia housing collections on its history, art, culture. Located in Bogotá downtown, is the biggest and oldest museum in Colombia. The National Museum of Colombia is a dependency of the Colombian Ministry of Culture. The National Museum is the oldest in the country and one of the oldest in the continent, built in 1823. Its fortress architecture is built in stone and brick. The plant includes arches, domes and columns forming a sort of Greek cross over which 104 prison cells are distributed, with solid wall façade. It was known as the Panóptico and served as a prison until 1946. In 1948, the building was adapted for National Museum and restored in 1975. The museum houses a collection of over 20,000 pieces including works of art and objects representing different national history periods. Permanent exhibitions present archeology and ethnography samples from Colombian artefacts dating 10,000 years BC, up to twentieth century indigenous and afro- Colombian art and culture. Founders and New Kingdom of Granada room houses Liberators and other Spanish iconography; the round room exhibits a series of oleos from Colombia painting history. Paintings by masters Débora Arango, Fernando Botero, Enrique Grau, Ignacio Gomez Jaramillo, Santiago Martinez Delgado, Alejandro Obregón, Omar Rayo, Andrés de Santa María, and Guillermo Wiedemann are part of the Permanent Collection.

Bogotá Botanical Garden

The José Celestino Mutis botanical garden is Colombias biggest botanical garden. It serves both as a recreation and research center with an emphasis on Andean and Páramo ecosystems. The garden is located in Bogotá and features plants from every Colombian altitude, climate and region. It was founded in 1955, in honor of botanist and astronomer Jose Celestino Mutis The municipally owned park is famous nationwide and is a member of the internationally known BGCI . The garden has an artificial waterfall and labs for studying plants and flowers. It also has public services such as a library and a tourist information desk. The garden is the only one in the nation specialized in preserving and collecting Andean species of flowers. Its 19.5 acres are full with collections of plants grouped by their original ecosystem. Among other curiosities, the park includes a sun clock, a palmetum, an orchid collection, and a wide variety of Amazon flowers.

Palacio Liévano

The Palacio Liévano or Lievano Palace Is a building located on the west side of the Plaza de Bolivar in Bogotá, Colombia in the cultural and historical hub of the city. The palace is located in La Candelaria district. Along the cobblestone streets of La Candelaria are other formal buildings such as the Plaza de Bolivar, the Palacio de Justicia, and the Casa de Nariño, as well as a library and museums. The palace was converted into Bogotás city hall in 1974.

Bogotá Colombia Temple

The Bogotá Colombia Temple is the 57th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . Fifteen years passed from the time the announcement of the Bogotá Colombia Temple in 1984 to its dedication in 1999. The temple was dedicated on April 24, 1999, by LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley. The Bogotá Colombia Temple is ten miles from downtown Bogotá, in the Niza section. The building features tall stained glass windows and silver-gray Brazilian granite on the exterior. It also has marble finishes and motifs reminiscent of ancient Incan designs. The temple grounds are landscaped with plants and flowers that are native to Colombia, as well as flowering eucalyptus trees. The Bogotá Colombia Temple has a total of 53,500 square feet , four ordinance rooms, and three sealing rooms.

Children's Museum of Bogotá

The Children's Museum of Bogotá is a privately managed museum foundation in Bogotá, Colombia's capital city, established in 1986 and aimed at teaching children about science, technology, culture and arts. The foundation operates the Children's Museum in an 8,000 m² building in the geographical centre of Bogotá, in which over 23 different modules and hundreds of individual exhibits are housed. The museum serves approximately 150,000 visitors per year — 69% of them children under 11 years of age that come to "learn by playing" in the exhibits. In addition to guided tours, the Children's Museum conducts workshops, special vacation programs for children and highly structured events for schools. To celebrate their 15th anniversary, the museum invited the most important young Colombian artists to each paint a mural on the museum walls. This resulted in a collection of 42 murals which have become a landmark for art students in Bogotá. Another highly important program of the Museum is the "Computer Clubhouse" — an international program promoted by the Intel Corporation and the Museum of Science, Boston. "Computer Clubhouse" teaches children of low income families computer skills for computer animation, graphic design, composing and editing, as a means to close the digital divide in our society. An introduction to robotics is also included in this program. In the outer gardens of the museum, a real Boeing 720 aircraft is present to teach children the basics of aeronautics. The airliner was donated by Avianca in the mid 1980s. The museum also features a room with a small representation of a city's roads to teach children traffic signs and behaviour while driving or walking on the streets

The Planetarium of Bogotá is a cultural center and planetarium located in the International Center of Bogota, Colombia, within Independence Park. Its observatory is South Americas largest cupola.

Casa de Nariño

The Casa de Nariño or Palacio de Nariño is the official home and principal workplace of the President of Colombia. It houses the main office of the executive branch and is located in the capital city of Bogotá, Colombia. It was dedicated in 1908 after being constructed on the site of the house where Antonio Nariño was born. The design was made by architects Gaston Lelarge, a French-born former pupil of Charles Garnier, and Julián Lombana. In 1980, the structure was rededicated after the construction of additions. The building also houses works of art and furnishings from different peroids of the history of art. Its garden houses the Observatorio Astronómico de Bogotá, designed by the Capuchin friar-architect Domingo de Petrés and built in 1802-03.

Central Cemetery of Bogotá

Central Cemetery of Bogotá is one of the main and most famous cemeteries in Colombia located in Bogotá. Houses several national heroes, poets and former Colombian presidents. It was opened in 1836 and was declared National Monument in 1984. Some of the sculptors of the mausoleums are Tenerani and Sighinolfi.

The park is named after the Latin American Liberator Simón Bolívar. The park is located in the locality of Teusaquillo and is managed by the District Institute of Recreation and Sport . The park is one of the most popular urban parks in the city of Bogotá. The park features a lake in which people can rent paddle boats and a large space for concerts and events capable of holding 140.000 people.

Coliseo Cubierto el Campín

Coliseo Cubierto el Campín is an indoor sporting arena located in Bogotá, Colombia. It was built in 1973. The capacity of the arena is 14,000 and is used mostly for basketball, tennis and concerts. The arena is the venue of many concerts in Bogotá, even though is criticized for lack of acoustic. The government is studying the possibility of demolishing the Coliseum and make a new one with all the amenities so the Coliseum can be replaced, but many people say they should leave the coliseum just for tennis and basketball, in consequence the government planted the possibility of building a new indoor arena in other place of the city to replace the Campin arena.

The mall is the fourth biggest mall in Colombia and is also one of the biggest in South America. The Mall is the first and the only one in all Colombia that has an Starbucks. The mall opened its doors on December 1, 2006 elaborate architecture spanning more than 160 thousand square meters, including delivery to the city access roads and a public square of 12 thousand square meters. It is located less than 10 minutes from Eldorado International Airport. The mall contains 374 shops, 2,079 parking spaces for cars, free wi-fi, a paintball range, 8 cinemas, an ice ring, casino, theatre and 8 screens movie theatre. The mall consists of two buildings El Costado Esfera and El Costado Alfiles that are connected by metallic bridge.

Capitolio Nacional

Estadio El Campín

The Estadio Nemesio Camacho, commonly known as El Campín, is the main stadium of Bogotá, Colombia. It was inaugurated on 10 August 1938 and has a current capacity of 36,343 spectators. It is the home ground of the Categoría Primera A teams Independiente Santa Fe and Millonarios. The stadium is named after Nemesio Camacho, former manager of the then-existing streetcar system of Bogotá and also the father of Luis Camacho, the person who offered the land where the stadium would be constructed. The name Campín comes from a modification of the word "camping" because the area where the stadium currently stands was formerly a camping zone. It entered service as a football stadium around 1946, just in time to host the first national club tournament. It was used as the final venue for 2001 Copa América, where the Colombian team were crowned champions of the American continent defeating Mexico 1-0. This stadium was one of the eight stadiums of the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup held by Colombia and hosted its closing ceremony.

Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia

The Supreme Court of Colombia in Bogotá is the highest judicial body in civil and penal matters and issues of criminal and civil procedure in Colombia. The Supreme Court of Colombia is the highest authority in regard to the interpretation of administrative law, constitutional law, and the administration of the judiciary The court consists of twenty three magistrates, elected by the same institution in list conformed by the Superior Council of the Judiciary for individual terms of eight years. The court meets at the Palace of Justice in the Bolívar Square of Bogota. After the Colombian first declaration of independence from Spain on 20 July 1810, a number of independent States like Tunja , Antioquia , Cartagena de Indias and Cundinamarca were established. Each State had its own body in charge of the administration of justice. Later, when these States established the Provincias Unidas de la Nueva Granada (United Provinces of New Granada), on 23 September 1814, the Alto Tribunal de Justicia (High Tribunal of Justice) was established. In 1819, the Republic of Colombia (the Gran Colombia) was born. A Court was created according to the provisions its Constitution of 30 August 1821, named Alta Corte de Justicia (High Court of Justice). In 1830, the Gran Colombia was dissolved and the Republic of New Granada was formed. As per the provisions of its Constitution of 29 February 1832, the Corte Suprema de Justicia (Supreme Court of Justice) was established. On 20 May 1853, it became the Corte Suprema de la Nación (Supreme Court of the Nation). In 1858, the Grenadine Confederation was founded. On adoption of its Constitution of 22 May 1858, the Courte Suprema (Supreme Court) became the body in charge of the administration of justice. In 1863, the Grenadine Confederation was replaced by the Estados Unidos de Colombia (United States of Colombia). On adoption of its Constitution of 8 May 1863, the Corte Suprema Federal (Supreme Federal Court) was established. Finally, after the establishment of the República de Colombia (Republic of Colombia) and on adoption of its Constitution of August 4, 1886, the body was renamed as the present, the Corte Suprema de Justicia (Supreme Court of Justice) on 3 September 1886. Its first President was Rito Antonio Martínez. In 1985 in the Palace of Justice siege, members of the M-19 guerrilla group took over the Palace of Justice, and held the Supreme Court hostage, intending to put President Belisario Betancur on trial. Hours later, after a military raid, the incident left all the rebels and 11 of the 25 Supreme Court Justices dead.

Teatro de Cristóbal Colón

The Teatro de Cristóbal Colón (The Chistopher Columbus Theatre), also known as the "Teatro Colón", is located in Bogotá, Colombia and it is the nation's National Theatre. It was built in the Neoclassical style by the Italian architect Pietro Cantini in 1885 and inaugurated on 27 October 1892 on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the discovery of America with a performance of Verdi's Ernani. The auditorium was constructed in the tradition horseshoe-shape and modelled on the layout of the Palais Garnier in Paris, but only about half the size. The Colón Theatre was declared a National Monument on 11 August 1975, and underwent renovations for three years. Between 2009 and 2010, the theatre was closed for extensive renovations.
