Sukabumi

Sukabumi is a city surrounded by the regency of the same name in the southern foothills of Mount Gede, in West Java, Indonesia, about 80 km south of the national capital, Jakarta. At an altitude of approximately 600 meters , the city is a minor hill station resort, with a cooler climate than the surrounding lowlands. Sukabumi is also a destination for whitewater rafting. Rubber production is a major industry in the area. The area surrounding Sukabumi circling the mountain has grown tremendously in population, such that northern Sukabumi Regency, hugging the volcano, and bordering Greater Jakarta, is home to the bulk of the regency's population. The area of the city is 48.15 sq.km, and the population at the 2010 Census was 300,359; the latest official estimate was 321,205. However, some 1.8 million people, as of the 2010 census figures, live in the northern third of Sukabumi Regency, effectively are suburbs of Sukabumi city.

Cicurug

Cicurug is a sub-district of Sukabumi regency in West Java, Indonesia. It is situated between Bogor and Sukabumi, located approximately 100 km south of Jakarta. Cicurug is surrounded by Mount Salak and Mount Gede. Cicurug can be reached by buses plying these routes: Jakarta-Sukabumi, Bogor-Pelabuhan Ratu and Bogor-Sukabumi. Cicurug is infamous for its appalling traffic jams, especially over holiday weekends. Radical solutions proposed by local environmental experts are expected to improve matters.

Mount Gede

Mount Gede or Gunung Gede is a stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia. The volcano contains two peaks with Mount Gede as one peak and Mount Pangrango for the other one. Three major cities, Cianjur, Sukabumi and Bogor, are located in the volcano complex at the east, south and northwest, respectively, along with suburban growth. Seven craters are located in the complex: Baru, Gumuruh, Lanang, Kawah Leutik, Ratu, Sela and Wadon . Historical volcanic activity has been recorded since the 16th century. With the amalgamation and growth of Greater Jakarta with those 3 cities, dense suburban growth has engulfed the fringes of the volcano, home to roughly 4 million people. Though not listed as one of the Decade Volcanoes or thought to produce large eruptions, the huge populations nearby give a potential for severe destruction if indeed a large eruption did occur.

Galunggung

Mount Galunggung is an active stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia, around 80 km southeast of the West Java provincial capital, Bandung to the east of the West Java town of Garut). Mount Galunggung is part of the Sunda Arc extending through Sumatra, Java and Bali, which has resulted from the subduction of the Australian plate beneath the Eurasian plate. For the first time since 1921 after eruptions finished and conditions seemed normal, on February 12, 2012, the status was upgraded to Alert based on changes in conditions. On 28 May 2012, it was lowered from 2 back to 1

Mount Papandayan

Mount Papandayan is a complex stratovolcano, located in Garut Regency, to the southeast of the city of Bandung in West Java, Indonesia. It is about 15 km to the southwest of the town of Garut. At the summit, there are four large craters which contain active fumarole fields. An eruption in 1772 caused the northeast flank to collapse producing a catastrophic debris avalanche that destroyed 40 villages and killed nearly 3,000 people. The eruption truncated the volcano into a broad shape with two peaks and a flat area 1.1 km wide with Alun-Alun crater in the middle, making the mountain appear as a twin volcano; one of the peaks is called Papandayan and the other Mount Puntang. Since 1772, only small phreatic eruptions were recorded before an explosive eruption that began in November 2002. More recently, the volcano has been quite active. On August 13, 2011 the volcanos early warning status was lifted from Level II, "Vigilant" to Level III, "Alert" following the swarm of long-period events, the increase of volcano tectonic earthquake rate, and an extremely high percentage of measured carbon dioxide gas in the ground at the summit crater. People, including tourists, were urged to remain at least 2 kilometers from the yellow craters on the 2,665-meter Mount Papandayan. On Friday September 2, 2011, the Indonesian Volcanology and Geophysical Disaster Mitigation Center reported that numerous shallow volcanic earthquakes had been recorded along with other indications of volcanic activity. A spokesperson for the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency noted that if Mt Papandayan erupted, over 170,000 people living in five nearby subdistricts and in twenty villages could be affected. Of the people likely to be affected, it was expected that perhaps as many as 11,500 people might need to be evacuated.

Mount Salak

Mount Salak is an eroded volcano in West Java, Indonesia. It has several satellite cones on its southeast flank and the northern foot, along with two additional craters at the summit. Mount Salak has been evaluated for geothermal power development. According to a popular belief, the name "Salak" derived from salak, a tropical fruit with scaly skin; however, according to Sundanese tradition, the name was derived from the Sanskrit word Salaka which means "silver". Mount Salak can be translated to "Silver Mountain".

Tangkuban Perahu

Tangkuban Perahu is a volcano 30 km north of the city of Bandung, the provincial capital of West Java, Indonesia. It last erupted in 1826, 1829, 1842, 1846, 1896, 1910, 1926, 1929, 1952, 1957, 1961, 1965, 1967, 1969, 1983. It is a popular tourist attraction where tourists can hike or ride to the edge of the crater to view the hot water springs and boiling mud up close, and buy eggs cooked on the hot surface. This stratovolcano is on the island of Java and last erupted in 1983. Together with Mount Burangrang and Bukit Tunggul, those are remnants of the ancient Mount Sunda after the plinian eruption caused the Caldera to collapse. In April 2005 the Directorate of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation raised an alert, forbidding visitors from going up the volcano. "Sensors on the slopes of the two mountains Anak Krakatoa on the southern tip of Sumatra Island and Tangkuban Perahu in Java picked up an increase in volcanic activity and a build up of gases, said government volcanologist Syamsul Rizal."

Bandung Geological Museum

The Bandung Geological Museum opened in Bandung, Indonesia in 1928. On December 10, 1871, six meteorites fell in Sindanglaut, West Java, Indonesia. This rare fall of a LL6 chondrite included an 11.5 kg TKW that is held by the Bandung Geological Museum and the Paris Museum of History. The museum has 13 meteorites that fell at various times on in areas of Java.

Kawah Putih

Kawah Putih is a striking crater lake and tourist spot in a volcanic crater about 50 km south of Bandung in West Java in Indonesia. Kawah Putih lake is one of the two craters which make up Mount Patuha, an andesitic stratovolcano . Mt Patuha is one of numerous volcanoes in Java. Kawah Putih crater lake itself represents a relatively stable volcanic system with no records of significant activity since around 1600. The Kawah Putih site was opened to visitors in 1987. The lake is 2,430 meters above sea level so the local climate is often quite chilly . This makes a brisk change from the humidity of the north Java plain and the capital city of Jakarta. Kawah Putih is a sizeable highly acid lake which changes colour from bluish to whitish green, or brown, depending on the concentration of sulfur and the temperature or the oxidation state. The sand and rocks surrounding the lake have been also leached into whitish colours through interaction with the acidic lake waters .

Mount Patuha

Mount Patuha is a twin stratovolcano about 50 km to the southwest of Bandung in West Java, Indonesia. It is located in the Bandung District of West Java. It is one of numerous volcanoes in this area; others in the region include Mt Malabar, Mt Wayang, and Mount Papandayan . The summit of Mt Patuha contains two volcanic craters 600 m apart. The northwest crater is dry but the southeast one has a greenish-white crater lake called Kawah Putih . There was formerly a sulfur mine at Kawah Putih although production has now ceased. No detailed history of eruptions is known for Mount Patuha. There are also potential sites for geothermal power near Mt Patuha which are being considered for development as sites for generation plants to feed the national electricity grid. State-owned geothermal power producer PT Geo Dipa Energi has been involved in recent plans to invest in a project in the Mt Patuha area.

Bogor Palace

The Bogor Palace is one of 6 Presidential Palaces of Indonesia, it is located in the city of Bogor, West Java. The palace is noted for its distinctive architectural and historical features, as well as the adjoining botanical gardens. Istana Bogor was opened to the public in 1968 to public tour groups, with the permission of the acting President of Indonesia, Suharto. The gardens of the palace covers an area of 284,000 square metres . During the colonial era the palace became favorite residence of the Governors-General due to Bogors more adaptable climate. It was also favored by the late President Sukarno and became the official presidential residence until his downfall in 1967. The palace remain mostly unused until February 2015, when the new president Joko Widodo moved the presidents office from Merdeka Palace to Bogor Palace.

Gunung Ciremai National Park

Mount Ciremai National Park or Gunung Ciremai National Park is located around 50 km to the south of the city of Cirebon in West Java, Indonesia. The park extends into the Kuningan and Majalengka regencies south of Cirebon. The park surrounds Mt Ceremai, an active volcano, the highest peak in West Java. Groups of hikers, including parties of students, often climb the peak although care is needed. Various types of endemic or endangered flora and fauna are found in the park which include the following: Flora: pines, Castanopsis javanica, Randu tiang, Nangsi, Macaranga, Pasang, Elaeocarpus, various species of fig trees, Ardisia cymosa, and Platea latifolia, Fauna: leopards, deer, Echidna, monkeys, the Javan hawk-eagle and various species of python.

Mount Halimun Salak National Park

Mount Halimun Salak National Park is a 400 km2 conservation area in the Indonesian province of West Java on the island of Java. Established in 1992, the park comprises two mountains, Mount Salak and Mount Halimun with a 11-kilometer forest corridor. It is located near the better known Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, but the National Park should be accessed from Sukabumi, 2 hours drive to the administration post and then 2 hours drive again to Cikaniki post gate. The park contains water catchment areas shielded from urban populations and agricultural areas to the north, as well as several endangered animals and rare birds.

Pelabuhanratu

Pelabuhan Ratu or Palabuhan Ratu is the administrative capital of Sukabumi Regency. Located at the southwest coast of West Java facing Indian Ocean. It is four hours drive from Bandung and up to 12 hours drive from Indonesia's capital Jakarta due to traffic jam in Ciawi, Cicurug, Cibadak and Pelabuhan Ratu gate, whose residents love to visit the bay Teluk Palabuhanratu, once named Wijnkoopsbaai by the Dutch. The bay is shaped like a large horseshoe and has enormous waves that can be very treacherous. The Sundanese locals tell that the Indian Ocean is the home of Nyai Loro Kidul who reigns along the southern-coast of all Java.

Bandung

Bandung is the capital of West Java province in Indonesia and the country's third largest city by population with a population of over 2½ million in the city itself, while its sprawling metropolitan area had a population of 8.6 million in 2011. Located 768 metres above sea level, approximately 140 kilometres south east of Jakarta, Bandung has cooler temperatures year-round than most other Indonesian cities. The city lies on a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains. This topography provides a good natural defense system, which was the primary reason for the Dutch East Indies government's plan to move the colony capital from Batavia to Bandung. The Dutch colonials first established tea plantations around the mountains in the eighteenth century, and a road was constructed to connect the plantation area to the capital to the northwest). The Dutch inhabitants of the city demanded establishment of a municipality , which was granted in 1906, and Bandung gradually developed itself into a resort city for plantation owners. Luxurious hotels, restaurants, cafes and European boutiques were opened, hence the city was nicknamed Parijs van Java . Since Indonesia achieved independence in 1945, the city has experienced rapid development and urbanisation, transforming Bandung from idyllic town into a dense 16,500 people/km2 metropolitan area, a living space for over 2.5 million people. Natural resources have been exploited excessively, particularly by conversion of protected upland area into highland villas and real estate. Although the city has encountered many problems (ranging from waste disposal, floods to complicated traffic system, etc.), Bandung still attracts tourists, immigrants and weekend travelers.

Sea World Ancol was closed at September 2014 but since 17 July 2015 has been reopened to the public.

Bogor

Bogor is a city on the island of Java in the West Java province of Indonesia. The city is located in the center of the Bogor Regency , 60 kilometers south of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, although it is administratively independent from that regency. Bogor is the 6th largest city of Jabodetabek and the 14th nationwide, with a population having passed 1 million; it is an important economic, scientific, cultural and tourist center, as well as a mountain resort. In 2015, the new president moved the seat of the president from Merdeka Palace to Bogor. In the Middle Ages, the city was the capital of Sunda Kingdom and was called Pakuan Pajajaran. During the Dutch colonial era, it was named Buitenzorg and served as the summer residence of the Governor-General of Dutch East Indies. With several hundred thousand people living on an area of about 20 km2 , the central part of Bogor is one of the world's most densely populated areas. The city has a presidential palace and a botanical garden one of the oldest and largest in the world. It bears the nickname "the Rain City" , because of frequent rain showers. It nearly always rains even during the dry season.

Gunung Padang Megalithic Site

Gunung Padang is a megalithic site located in Karyamukti village, Cianjur regency, West Java Province of Indonesia, 50 km southwest of the city of Cianjur or 6 kilometers from Lampegan station. It has been called the largest megalithic site in all of Southeastern Asia, and has produced carbon dating results which, if confirmed, suggest it is extraordinarily old. The survey believes that Gunung Padang was built in four different eras.

Bogor Botanical Gardens

The Bogor Botanical Gardens is a botanical garden located in Bogor, Indonesia, 60 km south of Jakarta. It is currently operated by Indonesian Institute of Sciences . The Gardens are located in the city center and adjoin the presidential palace compound of Istana Bogor. It covers an area of 87 hectares and contain 13,983 different kinds of trees and plants of various origin. The geographic position of Bogor means it rains almost daily, even in dry season. This makes the Garden an advantageous location for tropical plants cultivation. Founded in 1817 by the order of the government of Dutch East Indies, the Garden thrived under the leadership of many renowned Botanist. Since its foundation Bogor Botanical garden have served the country as a major research center for agriculture and horticulture, a legacy that lived on until today. It is the oldest Botanical garden establishment in Southeast Asia.

Cibodas Botanical Garden

Cibodas Botanical Gardens is a 84.99 hectares botanical garden on the slopes of Mount Gede, located in the Cibodas subdistrict of West Java, Indonesia. It is operated by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences . The garden was founded in 1852 by the Dutch botanist Johannes Elias Teijsmann as a branch of the Bogor Botanical Gardens, and its layout was completed under Rudolph Scheffer in later years. The gardens were built at a high altitude, allowing the growth of subtropical plants. The garden is approximately 1,300–1,425 metres above mean sea level, with an average temperature across the year of 20.06 °C, and an average humidity of 80.82%. The gardens are the first place that Cinchona trees were grown in Indonesia for quinine production in 1854. The trees was originally brought to Java by Justus Carl Hasskarl from South America and was successfully experimented in the garden. Plants which are exotic to Indonesia, such as Eucalyptus from Australia, Conifers from Europe, and others are cultivated in the area.

Mount Parang

Mount Parang or Gunung Parang (gunung-mountain, parang-machete), is a mountain in the Purwakarta Regency of West Java in Indonesia. Located between the two main arms of the Jatiluhur Reservoir, this andesite mountain of volcanic rock shows three distinct peaks stretching some 1.5km from north to south, the highest of which is 963m above sea-level. Its 600m cliffs, offering hard rock and scant holds, make it a popular venue for recreational rock climbers. Mount Parang is "The Park" or "The Mecca" of rock climbing in Indonesia. This mountain has become well-known in the world of Indonesia's rock climbing since 1980, and it is where climbing as a sport started in Indonesia. Any rock climber's list of ascents is regarded as incomplete if he has not tried climbing and creating a new route on Mount Parang, where climbing is different from that of other big walls around the world, since one is subjected to extremely hot and humid weather, rain, difficult rock, and a beautiful panoramic view. Mount Parang has three main peaks, better known as Tower 1, Tower 2 and Tower 3, and several other smaller peaks. Various climbing routes are available, but the more popular climbing route is "240" on Tower 2, made by Skygers, a rock climbing group from Bandung. The route "Special Forces" on Tower 3, was put up by the Indonesian Army's Special Forces. There are many other climbs in the area put up by teams from Indonesia and internationally. The best climbing season is in the months from June to October, because it rarely rains, and does not interfere with climbing. However one cannot rule out the possibility of a weather change at any time, and patience is useful here. To climb Mount Parang, physical and mental preparation should be made, as well as the use of proper equipment and skills. Safety considerations should be foremost, since on Mount Parang emergencies can easily arise. Mount Parang is managed and monitored by local villagers under community of Badega Gunung Parang with full support from the authorities of Purwakarta.

Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park

Mount Gede Pangrango National Park is a national park in West Java, Indonesia. The park is centred on two volcanoes—Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango—and is 150 km² in area. It evolved from already existing conservation areas, such as Cibodas Botanical Gardens, Cimungkat Nature Reserve, Situgunung Recreational Park and Mount Gede Pangrango Nature Reserve, and has been the site of important biological and conservation research over the last century. In 1977 UNESCO declared it part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Cangkuang

Cangkuang is a small 8th-century Shivaist candi located in Kampung Pulo village, Cangkuang, Kecamatan Leles, Garut Regency, West Java, Indonesia. The temple is one among the few Hindu-Buddhist temples ever discovered in West Javan region, other temples includes Batujaya and Bojongmenje temple. Three meters to the south from the temple there is an ancient Islamic tomb of Embah Dalem Arief Muhammad, believed to be the community elders of Cangkuang village during the Islamization of local Sundanese people in 17th-century.

Istana Cipanas

Istana Cipanas is one of the six presidential palaces of Republic of Indonesia, located in Cipanas, West Java, Indonesia. The Palace is located near a highway connecting Jakarta and Bandung through Puncak. Located approximately 103 kilometres from Jakarta, or about 20 kilometres from the city of Cianjur. Cipanas Palace is located in the village of Cipanas in Cianjur Regency, at the foot of Mount Gede and at an altitude of 1,100 metres meters above sea level. The building stands on an area of approximately 26 hectares, with the area of the building approximately 7,760 square metres .

Mount Guntur

Mount Guntur or Gunung Guntur is an active stratovolcano in western Java. It is part of a complex of several overlapping stratovolcanoes about 10 km northwest of the city of Garut. The last eruption was in 1847. At an elevation of 2,249 m, Mount Guntur rises about 1,500 m above the plain of Garut. It produced frequent explosive eruptions in the 19th century, making it one of the most active volcanoes of western Java. Since then it has not erupted. The name Guntur means "thunder" in the Indonesian language. The Kamojang crater, a geothermal power field and a tourist site, is located on the slopes of Mount Guntur.

Kamojang

Kamojang, popularly known as Kawah Kamojang or, is a geothermal field and tourist spot in West Java, Indonesia. The crater is located in sub-district Ibun in the Bandung Regency, approximately 45 km to the southeast of Bandung through the towns of Majalaya and Ibun. The crater can also be reached from the opposite direction through the town of Garut, in Garut Regency . The volcano that the crater is located on is Mount Guntur but the crater itself is listed as an active volcano of Indonesia because of its geothermal activities.

Patenggang Lake

Patenggang Lake is a lake located in the area of natural tourist attractions in the southern Bandung city, West Java, Indonesia, to be exact it is in Ciwidey village. Located at an altitude of 1600 meters above sea level, this lake has a very exotic landscape. Originally, this lake is called Situ Patengan by the local society. Since the pronunciation of patengan is too difficult to say in Sundanese, then they call it Situ Patenggang or Patenggang Lake. The label/name of the lake in maps.google.com is Situ Penganten which Penganten means newlywed couple.
