Top Attractions in Hertford

Church of Saint Leonard

The Church of Saint Leonard is a Norman church in Bengeo, Hertfordshire. Located on the hillside overlooking the shared Beane and Lea valley, the Grade I Listed church dates from about 1120, and is the oldest building in Hertford. The church served as the parish church of Bengeo until the larger Holy Trinity Church was opened in 1855. St. Leonard's was stripped of its fittings and stood empty and unused for some years, until the Gosselin family of nearby Bengeo Hall commissioned its restoration and refitting between 1884 and 1894. The church is built of flint with stone dressings and has a tiled roof. The nave is coated with plaster with an open collar-beam roof. The south doorway dates from the 12th century, with the addition of an 18th-century brick porch. The chancel roof and the wooden west bellcote both date from the 19th century restoration. The bellcote houses a single bell, dated 1636. Remains of medieval wall paintings were uncovered during restoration work in 1938 by William Weir. The church is used for Sunday services during summer months, and also hosts exhibitions and concerts.

Hertford Museum

Hertford Museum is a local museum in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, England. The museum first opened in 1903 and is located in a 17th-century town house with a Jacobean-style knot garden. The galleries on the ground floor present the early history of the museum. Objects include exotic animals, fossils, and Japanese armour. The first floor presents the town and people of Hertford. The collections cover local, military, natural, and social history, as well as archaeology, fine art, and geology. The museum undertakes educational activities with schools. For example, Little Munden Primary School took part in a pilot project, working with the museum, to create an exhibition about their locality covering the period 1830–1930. The museum closed in Winter 2008 for major refurbishment, largely funded by a Heritage Grant from the UK Heritage Lottery Fund. It reopened on 27 February 2010.

River Mimram

The Mimram Valley is named after the River Mimram, which rises from a spring to the north-west of Whitwell, in North Hertfordshire, England, and makes its confluence with the River Lea near Horn's Mill in Hertford. At Whitwell there are watercress beds which have existed since Roman times and these are fed by the same springs. The valley extends northwards where it becomes known as Lilley Bottom. Other sections of the valley are known as Kimpton Bottom and Codicote Bottom. Although a dry valley to the north, it has been known in particularly wet years for the River Mimram to be extended for several miles by springs in the upper valley. In 2001, in a neighbouring valley to the west a village was flooded. The Valley is the furthest east of all the Chiltern Hills valleys. The river is the subject of a Stevie Smith poem, The River God. Popular and enjoyable though this poem has been for its many readers, the description of the river in the poem bears little relation to the geography of the actual Mimram. The name "Mimram" is widely believed to be of Celtic origin. For example, Rutherford Davis states "etymology unknown, but there is little reason to doubt it is Celtic". Etymological connections have been suggested with the River Mint in Westmorland and with North Mymms in south Hertfordshire. Suggestions of it being named after any Celtic deity are unlikely to stem from any academic research. However, etymologists and philologists have found the name hard to analyse as there has been so little raw material on which to work until well into the Saxon era. Historically, the river has also been known by the name "Maran" and many maps from the 19th and early 20th centuries mark the river's name as "Mimram or Maran". Downstream in Digswell there is a homestead property dating from the 16th century that has the name "Maran House". It has been speculated that "Maran" may hark back to the homelands of the Catuvellauni tribe, the Celts who came to Hertfordshire from a region of modern-day Belgium and Northern France where the main river is the Marne, after which a whole department of France is named. The prefecture of Marne is Châlons-en-Champagne, formerly called Châlons-sur-Marne - with the name "Châlons" being etymologically derived from the local Catalauni Belgic tribe. However, the link between the French Catalauni and the British Catuvellauni is not categorically proven: some texts assume they are connected (including, most recently, Graham Robb's "The Ancient Paths"), while others infer a lack of connection from the lack of proof. The Mimram is crossed at Digswell by Welwyn Viaduct, carrying the East Coast main line.

Hertford North railway station

Hertford North railway station is one of two stations serving the town of Hertford in Hertfordshire, England with the other being Hertford East railway station. Hertford North is about ten minutes walk from the town centre in North Road and opened on 2 June 1924, replacing the similarly named station (known until 1923 as Hertford Cowbridge) on the branch from Hatfield. It is 19 miles 48 chains (31.5 km) north of London King's Cross. The station forms part of the Hertford Loop Line which provides a diversion from the East Coast Main Line from Alexandra Palace to Langley Junction just south of Stevenage. Stations on the line include Stevenage, Watton-at-Stone, Bayford and Cuffley. Trains on this line are run by Great Northern. It has one terminal and two through platforms and features a lift, a small shop, two ticket booths and ticket barriers.
