Derby QUAD

Derby QUAD also referred to as QUAD Derby or simply QUAD is an arts centre in Derby, United Kingdom, first opened on 26 September 2008. It has a steel-and-glass design by Bath architects Feilden Clegg Bradley, which was considered controversial when it was chosen by Derby council cabinet in 2004. QUAD provides an art gallery, two cinemas, artists’ studios, and a cafe bar. The centre also has available spaces in which people can create their own artwork. QUAD is a cinema, gallery, cafe, and workshop space that anyone can use. QUAD connects people and businesses to art and film for entertainment, education, and participation. There are artists' studios which the public can hire, and a BFI Médiathèque, in which visitors can watch various videos. QUAD offers creative courses for adults and children. The cinema shows a range of motion pictures, from old silent movies to the latest productions.

Cathedral Green Footbridge

The Cathedral Green Footbridge is a pedestrian cycle swing bridge in the centre of Derby spanning the River Derwent. It forms a third side to a triangle between The Cathedral the Silk Mill Museum. The bridge and adjacent re-landscaped Cathedral Green opened in March 2009 at a cost of £4.2m and is located in an area of World Heritage status. It links the Cathedral Green to Stuart Street and has been designed to swing to one side when water levels are high. It weighs 95 tonnes, with a box steel section deck, supported by three cables, keeping the overall structural slender. The bridge swings on a pintle bearing, with a central wheel to support its weight. Construction began in August 2007 and the Bridge opened to the public on March 20, 2009, then was officially opened on 2 April 2009, a year behind schedule, by the Mayor of Derby. The bridge designed by Ramboll, was partly inspired by tailor’s shears and has an iconic needle-shaped mast, to echo the heritage of the nearby Silk Mill. The silk theme of the needle is complemented by the nearby Saint Alkmunds Way Footbridge which includes silk bobbins as its design feature. The Cathedral Green has landscaped gardens with a tiled pavement incorporating lighting effects, called The Mill Flume, designed by Nayan Kulkarni, that represents the path of the River took when it powered the water wheel of the Silk Mill. There is a statue of Bonnie Prince Charlie as he was billeted near the site of the bridge during the Jacobite Rising in December 1745. The bridge was a finalist in the Prime Ministers Award for better public buildings following its completion in 2009. The judges said they were impressed by the design allowing the bridge to be turned with only a small amount of energy. The bridge with its 38 degree kink is supported on the central wheel with a wheel system being used on the counterweighted section.

Allestree Hall

Allestree Hall is a 19th-century former country house situated in Allestree Park, Allestree, Derby. It is a Grade II* listed building but has been unoccupied for many years, and has been placed on the Heritage at Risk Register. The Mundy family owned the Manor of Allestree from 1516 until Francis Noel Clarke Mundy sold it to Thomas Evans in 1781. It was later the home of William Evans and of his son Sir Thomas William Evans, 1st Baronet. On his death in 1892 the latter bequeathed the estate to his brother in law William Gisborne. The area known as Allestree Park was enclosed in about 1818. The house begun by Bache Thornhill was completed by John Giradot with three storeys and five bays, the central three bowed with an ionic columned porch. A large part of the estate was sold for housing development in 1928. The neglected house now stands in a 300-acre park and golf course. Allestree Park is a Local Nature Reserve.

Derby Arena

Derby Arena is a multi-use arena and velodrome at Pride Park in Derby, England. Construction was expected to be completed in November 2014 with the opening of the venue originally scheduled for January 2015. In May 2012 its development seemed uncertain due to a change of local government. It was constructed by contractors Bowmer and Kirkland and was scheduled for completion in 2014. The Arena was finally opened three months late in March 2015 by Sarah Storey and Margaret Beckett. It will be Britains fifth 250-metre indoor track, which will be raised to allow easy access to the 12 badminton court size infield area. There will also be a cafe, fitness gym, group exercise studios and a spinning studio. Also proposed was an outdoor 1.7-kilometre closed road circuit race track and a mountain bike skills area which would have been built on The Sanctuary Bird Reserve and LNR. A coalition of 16 local wildlife conservation groups expressed concern at the proposal, but it was approved in February 2014. An injunction brought against Derby City Council by Derbyshire Wildlife Trust led to a Judicial Review being granted which could have overturned the planning approval. On 15 March 2014 Derby City Council announced it was abandoning its plans to develop the site. In August 2014 a Derby-based company, Moda Bicycles, was appointed to provide 100 bicycles for hire at the Arena, which would be painted black-and-blue to match the Arenas branding. Accreditation to be permitted to use the track will require a four-stage training course, taking six hours to complete at a cost of £65, announced in a package of charges in August 2014.

County Cricket Ground

The 3aaa County Cricket Ground, usually shortened to County Ground and also known as the Racecourse Ground, is a cricket ground in Derby and has been the home of Derbyshire County Cricket Club since at least 1871. As the name implies it originally hosted horse racing. It also held the games of Derby County Football Club until their move to the Baseball Ground in 1895. The first FA Cup final outside London was held at the ground in 1886 when Blackburn Rovers beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 in a replay. England played one football international here, beating Ireland 9-0 in the British Home Championship on 9 March 1895. The playing area used to feature pitches laid on an east-west axis. Most first-class grounds feature pitches laid north-south to avoid problems with the light from the setting sun. Derbyshire re-laid the pitch on a north-south axis over the 2009/10 winter at a cost of £100,000, ready for the 2010 season. This involved moving some of the floodlights and the electronic scoreboard to suit the new alignment. In early 2010 a large new 1,800 seat stand was erected at the North end of the ground, which opened in May. A new marquee was also built next to the media centre which is used for private functions and entertainment during match days. In 2014 Derbyshire County Cricket Club signed a sponsorship agreement with Derbyshire-based apprenticeship training business Aspire Achieve Advance Ltd . This deal resulted in the County Ground being renamed The 3aaa County Ground for the next three years. When spoken this is pronounced three-a.

Derby Blackfriars

Derby Black Friary, also known as Derby Dominican Priory, or Blackfriars, Derby, was a Dominican priory situated in the town of Derby, England. it was also named in different sources as a Friary, Monastery and Convent, but was officially a Priory as it was headed by a prior. The "Black" came from the colour of the robes worn by the friars of the order. The friary was founded in the 13th century and enjoyed both royal patronage and royal visitors until its dissolution in 1539. It was constructed just outside the old town walls of Derby, on the site currently occupied by a house known as "The Friary" on Friar Gate, just south of the interaction with Ford Street and Stafford Street. The priory was one of three in the immediate vicinity: A community of Benedictine nuns lived at The Priory of St Mary De Pratis (also known as King's Mead Priory), just under a quarter of a mile to the north-west; a community of Cluniac monks lived at St. James Priory (also known as Derby Cluniac Priory), just over a quarter of a mile to the south-east.

Derby Heritage Centre

The Old Grammar School, St. Peter's Churchyard, Derby, England, is now a Ladies Hairdressing Salon. The building's new owner is the daughter of the architect responsible for the original restoration of this historical property. All of the original features of the building have been retained and further extensive restoration work has been carried out at the new owner's expense. The Reverend John Cotton, a principal New England Puritan figure and a founder of Boston, Massachusetts, was educated at Derby School. The Heritage Centre was established in 1992 by Richard Felix, long time historian on popular Living show Most Haunted and is the starting point for Derby Ghost Walks. The paranormal TV series Most Haunted completed an investigation at the Heritage Centre in 2003.

Pride Park Stadium

Pride Park Stadium, currently known officially as the iPro Stadium for sponsorship purposes, is an all-seater football stadium located on the Pride Park business park on the outskirts of Derby, England. It is the current home of Football League Championship club Derby County, who moved to the stadium from the Baseball Ground upon its opening in 1997. With space for 33,597 spectators, Pride Park Stadium has the sixteenth-largest capacity of any English football stadium, the twentieth-largest of any stadium in the United Kingdom, and the one hundred and twenty-first-largest in Europe. The ground has hosted one full England international. Pride Park was renamed the iPro Stadium on 7 December 2013, as part of a 10-year, £7 million sponsorship deal with global sports drink company iPro.
