The Capitol Theatre

The Capitol Theatre is a multi-purpose arts venue in Horsham, West Sussex. The site of the current Capitol was originally an ABC Cinema. First opened in 1936 as a one screen with a 900 person seating capacity, it was then just one of many cinemas in Horsham. The original Capitol theatre was actually situated a few minutes walk away on the site that is now Marks and Spencer. With its closure in 1983, Horsham District Council purchased the ABC on North Street and developed it into the Horsham Arts Centre. This opened to the public Christmas 1984. After nearly 20 years, Horsham Arts Centre closed its doors in January 2002 and so marked the beginning of A £6 million refurbishment which was completed September 2003. The venue houses a theatre, two cinemas, studio, gallery space, café and lounge bar. The new site was opened by HM Elizabeth II on 24 October 2004.

St. Hugh's Charterhouse, Parkminster

St. Hugh's Charterhouse, Parkminster is the only post-Reformation Carthusian monastery in the United Kingdom. It is located in the parish of Cowfold, West Sussex, England. The monastery was founded in 1873, when the property formerly known as Picknoll was acquired for its construction in order to accommodate two houses of continental Carthusians in exile. Building took place between 1876 to 1883 to designs by a French architect, Clovis Normand, who had at his disposal a generous budget. The number of monks has varied: 30 in 1883, 70 in 1928, 22 in 1984. The buildings are in a French Gothic Revival style described by some as "weak", although Pevsner's judgement was that "The plan is magnificent and can only be properly seen from the air". The church has relics of Saint Hugh of Lincoln, Saint Boniface and the Virgin Mary; and an unusually tall spire. It stands in the centre of buildings including a library with a collection of rare books and manuscripts and a chapter house decorated with images of the martyrdom of the monks' predecessors. The Great Cloister, more than a kilometre long and one of the largest in the world, connects the 34 hermitages to the church and the other buildings, embracing four acres of orchards and the monastic burial ground. It is a Grade II* listed building

Horsham Unitarian Church

Horsham Unitarian Church (formerly Horsham General Baptist Chapel) is a Unitarian chapel in Horsham in the English county of West Sussex. It was founded in 1719 to serve the large Baptist population of the ancient market town of Horsham—home of radical preacher Matthew Caffyn—and the surrounding area. The chapel's congregation moved towards Unitarian beliefs in the 19th century, but the simple brick building continued to serve worshippers drawn from a wide area of Sussex. It is one of several places of worship which continue to represent Horsham's centuries-old tradition of Protestant Nonconformism, and is the town's second oldest surviving religious building—only St Mary's, the parish church, predates it. English Heritage has listed the chapel at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.

Amberley Wild Brooks

Amberley Wild Brooks is a wetland Site of Special Scientific Interest in the flood plain of the River Arun, just north of the village of Amberley, West Sussex, England. There is a path, which forms part of the Wey South Path, leading through the Wild Brooks from Amberley to Greatham Bridge near Coldwaltham. The area is now managed as a Nature reserve by the Sussex Wildlife Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. It consists of grazing marsh, ditches and wet woodland and supports a large variety of wetland plants and insects. Over half of all the British species of aquatic plants can be found, as well as many rare invertebrates and breeding and wintering wildfowl. The English composer John Ireland wrote a piece for piano in 1921 called Amberley Wild Brooks, inspired by the natural beauty of the landscape; it was published as the second of Two Pieces for Piano.

Rising Universe

The Rising Universe, more commonly known locally as the Shelley Fountain, is a large modern water sculpture in Horsham, West Sussex, England. It was created by sculptor Angela Conner and installed in 1996 to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who was born near Horsham. The fountain consists of a large globe mounted on a pillar, designed to fill with water pumped from below. As the sphere fills it descends slowly after which a torrent of six and a half tons of water is released into the pool below; it then quickly rises and the cycle starts over again. It is 45 ft across at its base, standing 28 ft high. An extract from Shelleys 1817 poem Mont Blanc appears on a plaque on the sculpture: The everlasting universe of things Flows through the mind, and rolls its rapid waves, Now dark – now glittering – now reflecting gloom – Now lending splendour, where from secret springs The source of human thought its tribute brings Of waters, – with a sound but half its own, Such as a feeble brook will oft assume In the wild woods, among the mountains lone, Where waterfalls around it leap for ever, Where woods and winds contend, and a vast river Over its rocks ceaselessly bursts and raves. The fountain was switched off in the spring of 2006 to conserve water due to water shortages in the south of England. Although the water is recycled, it loses 180 gallons of water a day to filtration and evaporation. It was switched on again in November 2006. In May 2008 the fountain was turned off again due to the failure of its main hydraulic cylinder. On 19 January 2009 the fountain was fenced off for repairs. In October 2013 a local newspaper attempted to create a debate about the future of the sculpture largely on the grounds that it is expensive to maintain. Some local Horsham residents used the debate to admonish the sculpture as not to their taste. There were also representations of support for Conners work but the future of the piece is in question, at least in its present position.

Brightling Park

Brightling Park is a country estate which lies in the parishes of Brightling and Dallington in the Rother district of East Sussex, England. It is now the home of Grissell Racing, who have operated a racehorse training facility there for more than 30 years. The 18th-century house is brick-built in two storeys with a nine window north front and stands in some 200ha of parkland. Additional wings added in 1810 were demolished in 1955. 18th-century grade II listed stables and a coach-house to the south-east of the house comprise a single long building. The house is approached by an avenue bounded by ha-has, to the side of which stands a grade II listed alcove or summerhouse. The parkland is Grade II listed whereas Brightling Park House itself is a Grade II* listed building. Associated with the estate are a number of follies and an observatory, all designed by architect Sir Robert Smirke for John "Mad Jack" Fuller in the early 1800s. The Alcove or Summerhouse stands to the west of the house within the park and is a semicircular alcove built of red brick with a four-centred archway entrance flanked by pairs of interlocking columns. Built in 1803, it is a Grade II listed building. The Temple, standing within the park 400m to the south-west of the house, is a small circular building consisting of a colonnade surmounted by a dome. It is a Grade II* listed building. The Obelisk, also known as Brightling Needle, stands some 500m outside the parks perimeter wall on top of Brightling Down and is a Grade II* listed building. The Observatory was built in 1818 on a high spot outside the park some 150m to the west. It is a T-shaped one storey building built of ashlar with slits for the telescopes. Now a private house, it is also a Grade II* listed building.

Chesworth House

Chesworth House is a Tudor manor house, located a mile south of Horsham, West Sussex, England. The manor of Chesworth originally belonged to the de Braose family. Edward II apparently stayed at Chesworth in 1324. After this it was held by the Mowbray and the Howard families, including the Dukes of Norfolk and Earls of Arundel. Catherine Howard spent her childhood at Chesworth. Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk, was arrested at Chesworth; he was executed for high treason in 1572 after which the Crown took ownership of the estate. Chesworth House was then occupied by various tenants, including the Bishop of Chichester and the Caryll family . Queen Henrietta Maria lived there1660-61 and Catherine of Braganza from 1674 until 1699. The manor was later owned by the Eversfield family. In 1928 the house was bought by a Captain C. R. Cook who extended it and relaid the moated gardens, incorporating part of the river Arun which runs through the grounds. Subsequent owners included the theatrical agent Laurence Evans and the barrister Eben Hamilton. In 2012, Chesworth House was put on sale for offers over £7million.
