Lockwood

Lockwood is an area of Huddersfield, in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. It is 0.9 miles to the southwest of Huddersfield Town Centre, to the west of the River Holme. Lockwood was originally called North Crosland and part of the Crosland family estate. However, it was taken over by the Lockwood family after a series of disputes between the dynasties. Parts of the area are still known as North Crosland. Lockwood railway station is on the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield. It is situated in Swan Lane, just before the Grade II-listed, 32-arched Lockwood viaduct, which spans the valley and connects the line to Berry Brow. Prior to the mid-1970s it had its own extensive goods yard, coal yard, sidings and station master's house. The goods yards were used to service and supply raw materials to the former engineering works of David Brown Ltd. This particular division of David Brown's produced gearboxes for industrial machinery and hydraulic drives and some military armoured vehicles. The gear box that turns the top of the Post Office Tower in London was designed and built there, whilst the electric motors that drives the gearing were manufactured by Brook Motors, based in Brockholes. A branch line from the station, just before the railway viaduct, went via Armitage Bridge and Netherton to Meltham. This passed Meltham Mills, where David Brown Ltd. had a tractor manufacturing facility. The former station master's house is now a private residence and the goods yards are part of a timber merchant's. Lockwood is the manufacturing base of locally renowned Dixon's Milk Ices, housed in the former Lockwood Town Hall. The Huddersfield Rugby Union Football Club, at Lockwood Park, is situated below and to both sides of the railway viaduct, in the former 'Bentley & Shaws' Brewery.

Rugby Football League Hall of Fame

The Rugby League Hall of Fame honours the leading players of the sport of rugby league. It was established by the sports governing body, the Rugby Football League, in 1988. Players must have been retired for at least five years to be eligible; they must also have played at least ten years within the British game. Players are chosen for induction to the hall of fame by a panel consisting of sports writers, broadcasters and officials. Inductions to the hall of fame have been sporadic. Nine players were inducted when the hall was opened in 1988 and one more was added the following year. In 1995 the members of the hall of fame appeared on postage stamps released as part of Britains centenary celebrations. There were no new inductees until 2000, when three more players were introduced as part of the build up to the 2000 Rugby League World Cup. A further four players were inducted in 2005, and four more in 2013 during the fourteenth World Cup. The Hall of Fame is located at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, where a group of northern clubs met in 1895 and resolved to leave the Rugby Football Union to form their own body, which led to the development of the separate codes of rugby league and rugby union.

Rugby League Heritage Centre

The Rugby League Heritage Centre was formerly located in the basement of the George Hotel, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England. It is the UK’s only rugby league heritage museum and was the brainchild of BSkyB sports presenter and former Great Britain international Mike Stephenson. In 2013 the hotel was sold and the collections put on tour and in storage until a new location could be arranged. It was in the George Hotel, Huddersfield on August 29, 1895 that 21 northern clubs held a meeting and by a majority of 20 to 1 voted to secede from the Rugby Football Union to set up their own Northern Rugby Football Union. In 1922 this became the Rugby Football League. The Rugby League Heritage centre was opened on 30 August 2005 by former players Billy Boston, Neil Fox and Mick Sullivan. The Rugby League Heritage Centre featured displays of memorabilia, including rare shirts, medals, caps, programmes and photographs. There is also footage played on several plasma screens. The British Rugby League Hall of Fame is located in the Heritage Centre.

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary

The Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is a hospital situated in the English town of Huddersfield, part of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. It is situated in the suburb of Lindley and provides general services, emergency services and some specialist services it is the Kirklees and Calderdale Trauma Centre, The Huddersfield Royal Infirmary originally had its own School of Nursing. This has now been incorporated into a 'Virtual Ward' setting within the University of Huddersfield's School of Human and Health Resources. Ten years after the end of the First World War, a belated victory pie was created in the world-famous 'pie village' of Denby Dale, home to the Denby Dale Pie Company, in order to raise funds for Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. It is the base for Huddersfield Pharmacy Specials, established in 1964, which produces mainly unlicensed medicines and bespoke creams and ointments, oral liquids, eye drops and injectables. It employed 53 staff. In April 2006, photovoltaic array panels were installed on the roof of the hospital building, providing it with a renewable source of electricity. The emergency care and emergency theatre and trauma services for Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Brighouse and all of Calderdale/Halifax are accommodated at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. Planned care takes place at Calderdale Royal Hospital, Holme Valley Hospital and Dewsbury and District Hospital Calderdale and Dewsbury do however provide A+E services, with major cases being transferred to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance has a helipad on a nearby playing field with patients being transferred by land ambulance.

Lockwood railway station

Lockwood railway station is a railway station in Huddersfield, England. It is situated 1.5 miles (2 km) south of Huddersfield station on the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield. It serves the Lockwood district of Huddersfield, and services are provided by Northern. The station comprises a single side platform alongside the single-line of the railway, although the remains of a second platform alongside the site of the former second track (removed in 1989) are still visible. To the south of the station, the line to Sheffield passes over the valley of the River Holme by an impressive 476 yards (435 m) long stone viaduct to Berry Brow. Below the 122 feet (37 m) high structure is the Huddersfield Rugby Union Club ground at Lockwood Park, which was formerly a Bass Brewery. The former Meltham branch line branched off the main line just before the viaduct. This line closed to passengers in 1949 and to freight in 1965. To the north, the route passes through a short tunnel then crosses another large viaduct across the River Colne before joining the main line at Springwood Junction.
