Top Attractions in White Mountains

Mount Baldy

Mount Baldy is a mountain in northeastern Arizona in the United States. It is the highest point in the White Mountains and Apache County. It is the fifth highest point in the state, and the highest outside the San Francisco Peaks in the Flagstaff area. With a summit elevation of 11,409 feet , the peak of Mount Baldy rises above the tree line and is left largely bare of vegetation, lending the mountain its current name. The summit of Mount Baldy is within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and is off-limits to hikers without permission. An unnamed sub-peak with an elevation of 10,890 feet exists approximately 0.5 miles to the north of the summit that is off reservation and accessible to the public via maintained trail. A third peak, Ord Peak, sits about three miles northwest of Baldy Peak, not to be confused with Mount Ord . Mount Baldy is one of the most sacred mountains to the Apache of Arizona. The Western Apache of Arizona inhabited the areas within their most four sacred mountain ranges: the White Mountains of Eastern Arizona, the Pinaleno Mountains near the town of Safford in southeastern Arizona, the Four Peaks near the City of Phoenix and the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff. When Captain George M. Wheeler visited the mountaintop in 1873, he described the view as "The most magnificent and effective of any among the large number that have come under my observation". Wheeler named the mountain Mount Thomas after General Lorenzo Thomas, who fought in the Mexican-American War. It later became Mount Baldy. The name Mount Thomas has been assigned to a nearby peak by the U.S. Geological Survey. Mount Baldy also contains the headwaters of the Little Colorado River and Salt River and produces the most abundant trout fishing streams in Arizona. No other mountain in Arizona produces as many rivers and streams. Along its slope are numerous man made lakes. The area around Mount Baldy also averages the most abundant precipitation in Arizona. Wildlife is abundant on the mountain and includes the recently introduced Mexican Grey Wolf. While looking northeast from Historic Fort Apache Mount Baldy rises 6,130 ft in elevation.

Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest

The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest is a 2.76-million-acre United States National Forest which runs along the Mogollon Rim and the White Mountains in east-central Arizona and extending into the U.S. state of New Mexico. Both forests are managed as one unit by USDA Forest Service from the forest headquarters in Springerville, Arizona. Apache-Sitgreaves has over 400 species of wildlife. With its high elevation and cool summer breezes it is a popular weekend destination from the hot desert for Phoenix, Arizona residents. The forest is divided into 5 Ranger Districts that span almost 300 miles from Clifton, Arizona in the east-central portion of Arizona to the eastern boundary of the Coconino National Forest in north-central Arizona. The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest borders the western and northern borders of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. It is located in parts of Greenlee, Apache, Navajo, and Coconino counties in eastern and east-central Arizona, and Catron County in western New Mexico. The more northwesterly Sitgreaves National Forest portion lies adjacent to the north side of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and is located entirely in Arizona, within Navajo, Apache, and Coconino counties. It has a total area of 818,651 acres . The more southeasterly and much larger Apache National Forest portion lies adjacent to the east side of the Fort Apache and the San Carlos Indian Reservations. It lies on both sides of the border with New Mexico, in Greenlee, Catron, and Apache counties. It has a total area of 1,813,601 acres .

White River

The White River is a 16-mile tributary of the Salt River in the U.S. state of Arizona. Formed by two forks that drain part of the White Mountains, it begins in Navajo County and ends in Gila County, where it meets the Black River to form the Salt River. The White River lies entirely within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in the east-central part of the state. The North Fork White River and the East Fork White River merge near Fort Apache to form the main stem, which continues generally southwest to its confluence with the Black River. The North Fork is 46 miles long, and the East Fork is 26 miles long. Originating near the Mogollon Rim, the North Fork flows generally west through Apache County to near McNary and then south through Navajo County to near Fort Apache. The East Fork flows generally west from near Mount Baldy in Apache County to the confluence with the North Fork near Fort Apache. According to Arizona Place Names, the river and its forks take their name from the White Mountains, "as nearly as can be determined". The origin of name of the mountains is "probably lost", but "White Mountains" was used by the state's governor in a speech in 1871. An earlier Spanish-language alternative name for the stream was Sierra Blanca River.
