Top Attractions in Gosport

Fort Brockhurst

Fort Brockhurst is one of the Palmerston Forts, in Gosport, England. It is now an English Heritage property. Fort Brockhurst was designed by William Crossman in the 19th century to protect Portsmouth. With its formidable firepower, its main purpose was to guard the approach from potential landing areas on the south Hampshire coast. Although modern life has encroached on the fort, its fabric remains largely unaltered and the parade ground, gun ramps and moated keep can all be viewed. Constructional details of the casemates are able to be seen due to unrepaired second world war bomb damage at the North-East corner. The site is occasionally open to the public, under the auspices of English Heritage. Fort Rowner to the South-West is in a similar state of preservation, but is inside HMS Sultan naval base and it is only opened to the public once a year under the banner of "Heritage Open Week".

Fort Grange

Fort Grange is one of the Palmerston Forts, in Gosport, England. After Gomer and Elson forts had been approved in 1852, further consideration led to a decision to fill the gap between them by three more forts, and Grange is the most southerly of the three. Work began in 1858 and it was completed in 1863. Built as part of the outer defence line for Gosport along with Fort Brockhurst, Fort Elson and Fort Rowner to the North East and Fort Gomer to the South West. The fort is a Grade II Listed Building and is virtually identical with Forts Brockhurst and Rowner. There are many surviving details and the main structure is intact, however, the earthworks have been much reduced and much of the moat is infilled. The fort was used as a military headquarters from 1910 and was derelict in 1983. By 2008, Fort Grange had become the home of HMS Sultan VCC . In 1916 it was armed with a 1-pounder heavy anti aircraft gun on a travelling carriage.

Burrow Island

Burrow Island (also known as 'Rat Island') is a tidal island in Gosport. The island overlooks Portsmouth harbour. At low tide a spit connects it with Priddy's Hard. It has been suggested that the name dates from the 17th century and is derived from being within the borough of Gosport. Between 1678 and 1679, a fortification named Fort James was constructed on the island under the direction of Bernard de Gomme. It took the form of a square tower 19 ft tall. The fortification was apparently allowed to decay with George Byng commenting on its poor condition in a letter written in either 1707 or 1708. It appears that a rebuilding to a new design was proposed on 1750 but this never took place. What were by then the ruins of the fort were partially demolished 1827 and nothing now remains above ground level. It has been claimed that King Stephen built a fortification on the island but this is unlikely to have been the case. Burrow Island is owned by the Ministry of Defence and public access is not permitted, despite this, at low tide some members of the public have ventured onto Burrow Island. It is a popular spot to go fishing. It is known that some have found rather lovely unique coloured glass bottles that had been washed up on the island. Burrow Island was once used as a burial ground for convicts; several human skeletons were discovered on the island early in 2014. They are believed to be from the 19th.century and are the remains of convicts or prisoners of war who had been buried on the island. Burrow Island is one of 43 (unbridged) tidal islands which can be walked to from the mainland of Great Britain.

Stokes Bay

Stokes Bay is an area of the Solent that lies just south of Gosport, between Portsmouth and Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire. There is a shingle beach that has a great view of Ryde and East Cowes on the Isle of Wight to the south and also Fawley in the south west. The village of Alverstoke is close by. The annual Stokes Bay Festival takes place here every year during Cowes Week. To the east of Stokes Bay is Fort Gilkicker, which was built in 1871 to guard the headland and the western approaches to Portsmouth Harbour and housed 22 gun emplacements. It was used in both world wars to protect Portsmouth and air attacks and fell into disrepair shortly after 1945; it is on the Buildings at Risk Register and support is being sought for its conservation and for an alternative use. There was also a pier, adjacent to Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Lifeboat station, from which a ferry service ran which was the quickest crossing to the Isle of Wight. The pier had a railway station, opened 6 April 1863, which had a branch line from the Fareham to Gosport Line. This railway stopped running services to the pier on 1 November 1915 and sold the land to the Admiralty in 1922. The line was not as popular as the Portsmouth to Ryde crossing although the journey from London was longer than from Portsmouth. Most of the railway line is a cycle path. The Admiralty used the pier from 1922 to transport munitions and fuel and had a narrow gauge railway line which replaced the branch line. The pier was then used as a torpedo station and fell into disrepair before being demolished in the late 1970s. In June 1944, landing craft embarked from Stokes Bay for France as part of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy. The Solent opposite Stokes Bay is often used by extremely large warships to anchor, as Portsmouth Harbour is not deep enough to berth them. It has also been the site of many fleet reviews, the most recent being to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in 2005. To the east is the 9-hole Gosport and Stokes Bay Golf Club. This area of the bay also contains a number of fresh and salt-water margin lagoons and provides a unique habitat for rare flora, including several specimens of the Kermes Oak .

Fort Gomer

Fort Gomer was one of the Palmerston Forts, in Gosport, England, the southernmost and first-built polygonal land fort in the defence line to the west of Gosport. It was located on land immediately to the west of the present Gomer Lane. Fort Gomer was the most southerly fort in the line of five which formed part of the ‘Sea Front and Spithead Defences’, Inner Line, Land Front, Left Flank. This line of forts was later known as the Gomer-Elson Line or Gosport Advanced Line This consisted of, from south to north, Fort Gomer, Fort Grange, Fort Rowner, Fort Brockhurst and Fort Elson. An inscription above the main entrance through the barrack block read `Erected AD 1853’. The fort was almost complete before work began on Fort Elson in 1855. The estimated cost of Fort Gomer was £92,000 in 1869.
