Catcliffe Glass Cone

The Catcliffe Glass Cone is a glass cone in the village of Catcliffe in South Yorkshire, England. It is the oldest surviving structure of its type in Western Europe, and it is a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. Only three other glass cones survive in the United Kingdom; at Lemington, Wordsley and Alloa. The glassworks cone is located at 53.3926°N 1.3617°W / 53.3926; 1.3617. It was part of the Catcliffe glassworks, which was established in 1740 by William Fenney. Fenney had previously been the manager of the glassworks at Bolsterstone that was owned by his mother-in-law. The site at Catcliffe was chosen in part because the terms of her will prevented him from setting up a glassworks within 10 miles of the works at Bolsterstone and Catcliffe is 10.5 miles away. The glassworks closed c.1887, but was reopened briefly in 1900, then in the First World War the site was used as a prisoner-of-war camp. The cone was threatened with demolition in the 1960s so the foundations of the other buildings that comprised the glassworks were excavated in 1962. In 1968 the cone received Grade I listing.

Clifton Park Museum

Clifton Park Museum is a medium-sized municipal museum situated in Clifton House on the western edge of Clifton Park in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. It is one of several publicly owned museums and visitor attractions administered by the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham and is the headquarters of Heritage Services, which also includes the York and Lancaster Regimental Museum and Archives and Local Studies. The museum collections include local social and industrial history, archaeology, natural sciences, coins and medals and fine and decorative arts. These include Roman remains from Templeborough, and Nelson, a stuffed Cape Lion. The museum is noted for its particularly fine collection of Rockingham Pottery, including one of only two specimens of porcelain Rhinoceros Vase, which were created as showcases of the work of the pottery.

Magna Science Adventure Centre

Magna Science Adventure Centre is an educational visitor attraction, appealing primarily to children. It is located in a disused steel mill in the Templeborough district of Rotherham, England. The site is formerly home to the Steel, Peech and Tozer steel works . In 50 AD it was the site of the Templeborough Roman fort. The principal exhibits are divided into five pavilions: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Power . There is also a large outdoor play area and water play area. The site, often used for staging events, conferences and gigs, won the Enjoy England Gold Award for Business Tourism in 2006 as well as many other awards for the high quality of product. The creative, development, funding and building process was led by Stephen Feber, who selected the design team, led by Wilkinson Eyre, architects and Event Communications, exhibition designers. Tim Caulton directed exhibition development, introducing spectacular exhibits that bridged science and art, such as Ned Kahns fire tornado, "The Big Melt" and works by San Francisco artist in electricity Cork Marcheschi. Magnas exhibitions won the Best Exhibition category at the 2002 Design Week Awards. The Magna Science Adventure Centre won the 2001 RIBA Stirling Prize for its architects Wilkinson Eyre Architects, Mott MacDonald and Buro Happolds innovative use of space in the old steelworks. Visitors are often as impressed by the building itself as the attractions contained within it.

Rother Valley Country Park

The Rother Valley Country Park is a country park in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, close to its border with Sheffield and Derbyshire. It covers 3 square kilometres, has four artificial lakes, recreational activities and nature reserves. The majority of the park is on the site of a former quarry, with the main excavation sites filled by the artificial lakes. There is still much of the original quarry machinery below the water. The park was officially opened on 27 May 1983, at a cost of £4 million. The park aimed to provide an area for recreational pursuits, encourage wildlife to return to the area, and provide a flood protection plan for the areas downstream. When the construction was finished, the lakes were filled with fresh water from The Moss because the River Rother was so heavily polluted at that time. The park was formerly meadows before the quarry opened and started excavation. At the eastern side of the lake stands the Bedgrave Mill courtyard, where the visitor centre is located displaying the flood defence map and the original mill mechanism "flour into grain" exhibition from when it was a water mill, also there is a craft centre and "The Stables" cafe there. Rother Valley Country Park is home to Sheffield Cable Waterski www.sheffieldcablewaterski.com a cable waterski system. The system was installed when the Park was originally opened to the public and it was one of the few cable waterski systems in the UK at the time. The popularity of cable waterskiing has grown significantly since this time and there are now a number of these systems in the UK, mainly focused on offering kneeboarding and wakeboarding facilities and what is now called a Wake Park, which is a collection of obstacles floating in the lake that riders will "hit" on their way round and do tricks from. Very similar to a snowboard or skateboard park. An 800m long narrow-gauge railway was opened on the east side of the main lake in 2009.

Anston

The village of North Anston is in England. Anston was already established as a settlement by the time of the Domesday Book , when North and South Anston were under the ownership of Roger de Busli. The name Anston is thought to derive from "an stan" as opposed to anything based on the suffix ton, and there is much evidence of quarrying in the area. Anston, and neighbouring Dinnington make up a 2.2-mile strip of urban development stranded amidst a sea of agricultural land, and its presence and growth owe much to quarrying. The original interest for the area was the sandy "Anstone" magnesian limestone, but the real growth in Anston's population was more due to the sinking of the Dinnington Main Colliery in the early 20th century. Anston is Part of Rotherham Borough Council for the Anston and Woodsetts Ward. It is represented by the three Labour Councillors, Darren J L Hughes, Judy Dalton and Jo Burton. Anston railway station opened on 20 May 1912 and closed on 2 December 1929.

Scholes Coppice

Scholes Coppice (also called Scholes Wood) in an area of ancient woodland located to the north-west of Kimberworth in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. It was once part of the Kimberworth Deer Park, and contains a number of archaeological sites, the most significant of which is thought to be an Iron Age hill fort. Known as Caesar's Camp or Castle Holmes, this Scheduled Ancient Monument was partially excavated in the 1990s. It consists of an outer bank 2–5 metres high and 15 metres wide that may have been topped by a wooden palisade, which is paralleled by a 15-metre-wide ditch. There is no obvious entrance to the site. Scholes Coppice and the neighbouring Keppel's Field (which was once a part of the woodland) were designated a Local Nature Reserve by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council in 1996.

Keppel's Column

Keppels Column is a 115-foot tower between Wentworth and Kimberworth in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England. The column was built in the late-18th century to commemorate the acquittal of the court-martialled Admiral Augustus Keppel after the Battle of Ushant. It visibly bulges due to an entasis correction, which was rendered inappropriate when funding problems reduced the height. It was commissioned in 1778 by Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham and designed by John Carr who was also responsible for the Wentworth Woodhouse stables and the familys Irish house at Coollattin. The column, which has an internal spiral staircase, is located on a prominent hill on the southern extent of the Wentworth Estates. The hill is more than 480ft above mean sea level and is one of the highest hills in the Borough of Rotherham, second only to the hill on which Hoober Stand is located. Hoober Stand is another historic folly and landmark on the Wentworth Estates, standing 518ft above mean sea level. Keppels Column is closed to the public, and has been in danger of falling into disrepair for some time. It is a prominent landmark in the area and is a Grade II* listed monument. The column can be viewed at close quarters from the public footpath running from Admirals Crest in Scholes.

Rotherham Bridge

Rotherham Bridge crosses the River Don in central Rotherham, South Yorkshire. It is known for its bridge chapel, considered the best preserved in England. A document of 1385 refers to Bridgegate in the town, which implies that a previous bridge existed on the same site. The road it carries was originally the main route from London and Mansfield to Barnsley, Halifax and Richmond. The current bridge was erected by 1483, when the Chapel of Our Lady of Rotherham Bridge was added. It is of ashlar sandstone and is built on three piers, each with a cutwater. John Leland, writing around 1540, described a "fair Stone Bridge of iiii arches" and "a Chapel of Stone well wrought". The chapel was dissolved in 1547 and converted into first an almshouse, then the town gaol and finally a shop. The bridge was altered in 1768–69 by John Platt, working for John Carr of York, but was restored to its original dimensions by Reginald Blomfield in 1927, when Chantry Bridge was built alongside. The chapel was restored at the same time. The bridge is Grade I listed and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Millmoor

Millmoor is a stadium in Rotherham, England. It was built and was used for football matches, and until the end of the 2007-08 season was the home ground of Rotherham United, until a dispute over ownership forced them to move to the Don Valley Stadium in nearby Sheffield. The stadium was built in 1907 on the site of a flour mill, and presently holds around 8,300. Redevelopment work was started on the ground, with a new main stand being built in place of the previous wooden main stand which was built in the 1950s. The new stand was planned to contain corporate facilities and bring the capacity back to over 10,000. The work was scheduled to finish in 2006, but has faced a series of setbacks, one of which was Japanese Knotweed being found on the site. Rotherham United have now moved to a new community stadium. In May 2011 Rotherham Titans and Rotherham Council announced a plan to allow the rugby union club to move into Millmoor. After much speculation it was announced in December 2011 that the Titans would remain at Clifton Lane for the foreseeable future due to the deal falling through. It hosted a number of memorable Rotherham United games including the first leg of the inaugural League Cup final which Rotherham won 2-0 and the game where Rotherham beat Chelsea 6-0.

Roman Rig

The Roman Rig (also known as Roman Ridge, Scotland Balk, or Barber Balk) is the name given to a series of earthworks to the north east of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England that are believed to originally have formed a single Dyke running from near Wincobank in Sheffield to Mexborough. Its purpose and date of construction are unknown. Formerly thought to have been a Roman road, modern archaeologists think that it was built either in the 1st century AD by the Brigantian tribes as a defence against the Roman invasion of Britain, or after the 5th century to defend the kingdom of Elmet from the Angles. The southernmost end of the dyke is thought to have been close to Lady's Bridge at the River Don in Sheffield, but today it only becomes visible close to the Iron Age fort at Wincobank. The dyke continues in a north-easterly direction following the Don Valley to Kimberworth in Rotherham where it splits into two branches that continue roughly parallel to each other in a sweep starting to the north-east and turning east. The southern branch passes through Greasbrough, intersecting the River Don just south of Swinton at Kilnhurst. The northern branch passes close to another Iron Age fort at Scholes Coppice and runs to the north of Swinton, meeting the River Don at Mexborough. Part of the western end of the ridge was used in the Middle Ages to demarcate the boundary of Ecclesfield and Sheffield. This western part parallels the Don, and a report of 1891 in the Sheffield Independent stated that it had formerly run as far west as Bridgehouses. Part of the northern branch formed the boundary between Wath-on-Dearne on the one side and Rawmarsh and Swinton on the other.

Greasbrough

Greasbrough is a small suburb in Rotherham, in South Yorkshire, England. The suburb falls in the Wingfield Ward of Rotherham MBC. Greasbrough has 2,038 inhabitants and 2,270 acres of land belonging to Earl FitzWilliam. It is located two miles north of Rotherham. Greasbrough has a gothic-style church called St. Mary's, which was completed in 1828. A schoolroom is built into the rear lower part of the building. There are also Wesleyan and Independent chapels, also with attached schools. There is a main school in Greasbrough named Greasbrough Junior & Infant School, situated on Munsbrough Rise. This also has a nursery in the same building, starting from the age of 3. Greasbrough also has a football team called Greasbrough Youth, with players from ages 6. There is a Boys' team and there used to be a Girls' team. However, the Girls' team has now moved to Rawmarsh. It is also well known for its Working Mens Club which has been host to many Hollywood acts over the years such as Johnny Ray, Bob Monkhouse, Matt Monro and Adam Faith.
