Ipswich Museum

Ipswich Museum is a registered museum of culture, history and natural heritage located on High Street in Ipswich, the County Town of the English county of Suffolk. It was historically the leading regional museum in Suffolk, housing collections drawn from both the former counties of East Suffolk and West Suffolk, which were amalgamated in 1974. The original foundation of 1846, devoted primarily to Natural History, was moved to new premises in High Street in 1881. In about 1895 Christchurch Mansion, a large 16th-century house near the town centre in Christchurch Park, was given to the town. It was developed as a second venue under the same management and curatorship, devoted particularly to fine and decorative arts. Both are parts of one institution and draw on the same central core of collections.

Ipswich Transport Museum

The Ipswich Transport Museum is a museum in Ipswich, Suffolk, England devoted principally to the history of transport and engineering objects made or used in its local area. The museum collection was commenced by the Ipswich Transport Preservation Group in 1965. In 1988 it obtained use of its present premises, the old Priory Heath trolleybus depot in Cobham Road, and has been opened to the public since 1995. Its collection of more than 100 large objects includes trams, trolley- and motor-buses from Ipswich Corporation Transport, the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company and other local operators; commercial vehicles; fire apparatus; mobile cranes; bicycles; biers; horse-drawn vehicles; prams; and wheelchairs. There is a good representation of the Ipswich manufacturers Ransomes, Sims Jefferies and Ransomes Rapier and of electric vehicles. Local rail and waterway transport and aviation are represented mainly by photographic collections and smaller exhibits. The Museum also houses an archive and library together with costume and ticket collections. The Museum is a registered charity, and is normally open to visitors on Sundays from April to November; and on weekday afternoons during school holidays. It also organises occasional events including the annual Ipswich to Felixstowe Run for vintage vehicles on the first Sunday in May, from Christchurch Park, Ipswich to the Promenade in Felixstowe.

Christchurch Mansion

Christchurch Mansion is a substantial Tudor brick mansion house within Christchurch Park on the edge of the town centre of Ipswich, Suffolk, England. It is now owned by the town and since 1895 has formed one of the two principal venues of the Ipswich Corporation Museums, now part of the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service. The Grade I listed building mansion houses a collection of pottery and glass, a contemporary art gallery and a collection of paintings by artists including John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough. There are rooms preserved as past inhabitants would have known them, complete with original items of fine clothing. The house sits within a 70 acres public park which features many beautiful trees, rolling lawns and ponds.

Ipswich Town Hall

Ipswich Town Hall England was constructed in 1878 at a cost of £16,000 and opened by Mr John Patterson Cobbold, the mayor of Ipswich at the time. The Town Hall and the adjoining Corn Exchange was created in a typical, grand Victorian architecture style. The Town Hall and Corn Exchange now consist of 2 art galleries as well as a theater. The venue has also hosted the political debate program Question Time.

Regent Theatre

Regent Theatre is a theatre and concert venue located in St Helens Street in Ipswich, Suffolk. The auditorium was recently refurbished and now holds 1,551 people, having lost around 150 seats. It is East Anglias largest theatre. It has also been known as the Gaumont and Odeon. It was designated as a Grade II Listed Building in 2000.

Broomhill Park

Broomhill Park is a semi-natural woodland park between Sherrington Road and Valley Road in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. In older times it was called Broom Hill. The park contains many fine historic oaks and an abundance of Scots Pines. The park contains Broomhill Pool, a Grade II listed lido, which the Broomhill Pool Trust is campaigning to re-open.

Portman Road

Portman Road is an association football stadium in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. It has been the home ground of Ipswich Town F.C. since 1884. The stadium has also hosted a number of England youth international matches, and one senior England friendly international match, against Croatia in 2003. It has staged several other sporting events, including athletics meetings and international hockey matches. The stadium underwent significant redevelopments in the early 2000s, which increased the capacity from 22,600 to a current figure of 30,311, making it the largest capacity football ground in East Anglia. Each of its four stands have since been converted to all-seater, following the recommendations of the Taylor Report. Also located at the ground are conference and banqueting facilities, the Sir Bobby Robson Suite, Legends Bar and a club store selling Ipswich Town merchandise.

It stands in an isolated position in fields about 3 miles west of the centre of Ipswich.

Ipswich Martyrs

The Ipswich Martyrs were nine people burnt at the stake for their Lollard or Protestant beliefs around 1515-1558. The executions were mainly carried out in the centre of Ipswich, Suffolk on The Cornhill, the square in front of Ipswich Town Hall. At that time the remains of the medieval church of St Mildred were used for the town's Moot Hall. Later, in 1644 Widow Lackland was executed on the same site on the orders of Matthew Hopkins the notorious Witchfinder General. Other groups of Protestants were persecuted in various parts of Suffolk during the same period, notably those of Hadleigh, Beccles, Yoxford, Laxfield, Wetheringsett, Stowmarket, Framsden, Hintlesham, Haverhill, Winston, Mendlesham, Stoke-by-Nayland, East Bergholt, Dedham, Thwaite, Bedfield, Crowfield, Long Melford, Somerton and Little Stonham. The most famous was Dr Rowland Taylor of Hadleigh, burnt on Aldham Common in 1555.

Belstead Brook Hotel

The Belstead Brook Hotel in Ipswich, Suffolk is a building of historical significance. It was originally a 16th-century hunting lodge but was used later as a family residence. The property was then converted to a hotel which now provides accommodation and restaurant facilities. It also caters for special events particularly weddings.

Saint Mary at Stoke

Saint Mary at Stoke is a Grade I listed Anglican church in the Old Stoke area of Ipswich. on the junction of Stoke Street and Belstead Road in Ipswich, Suffolk. The church stands in a prominent position near the foot of a ridge, just south west of Stoke Bridge and the town centre. Its parish was a small farming community which saw a great increase in population with the coming of the railway to this part of Ipswich. It was once governed by Ely, a fact lightly made much of by a politician of Stoke. In 1995 its parish was subsumed into the South West Ipswich Team Ministry in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. The building is made up of a small medieval church and a large Victorian extension designed by William Butterfield in 1872. A church has existed on this site since the 10th Century. It is probably one of the St Marys mentioned in the Domesday Book. The original nave has a medieval single hammer beam roof, with moulded wall plates, angels with shields at the ends of the hammer beams, and figures underneath. The angels are Victorian replacements for those destroyed by iconoclasts. The church was visited by William Dowsing. There is a medieval piscina.

Ipswich dock

The Ipswich Dock, (also the waterfront, Ipswich wet dock and the wet dock,) is the area of land around the dock in the town of Ipswich at a bend of the River Orwell which has been used for trade since at least the 8th Century. A wet dock was constructed in 1842 which was 'the biggest enclosed dock in the kingdom' at the time. A major regeneration of the area has taken place since 1999.

Clifford Road Air Raid Shelter

The Clifford Road Air Raid Shelter, located under the playground of Clifford Road Primary School in Ipswich was built during the first months of World War II. It was an unusually solid construction, capable of holding several hundred people. After the war, it was sealed up and largely forgotten. In 1989, workmen digging a pond in the school grounds discovered one of the original stairways leading into the shelter. The structure had survived with little more than a few leaks.

Ipswich Greyhound Stadium was a former greyhound racing track in Ipswich. The track was built in London Road during the late 1930s and the racing was limited to independent racing. It was not until 1974 that the track switched to National Greyhound Racing Club rules. As a result the venue enjoyed success with good attendances and attracted top trainers including Joe Cobbold. The race distances were over 277m, 437m, 647m and 832m and a major race was held called the Suffolk Derby. The track ceased NGRC racing in 1989 and some time later the track was redeveloped into a shopping area.

Ransomes and Reavell Sports Club Ground

Ransomes and Reavell Sports Club Ground is a cricket ground in Ipswich, Suffolk. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1972, Suffolk played Hertfordshire in the grounds first Minor Counties Championship match. From 1972 to present, the ground has hosted 48 Minor Counties Championship matches, including the rain-affected 2005 final between Suffolk and Cheshire in 2005, which was drawn. and 2 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. The ground has also hosted a single List-A match which saw Minor Counties East play Middlesex in the 1978 Benson and Hedges Cup. The ground is the home of St Margarets Cricket Club and Ransomes Sports Football Club.

Alnesbourne Priory

Alnesbourne Priory, also known as Alnesbourn Priory was a small Augustinian monastic house in the English county of Suffolk. It was located near Nacton to the south-east of Ipswich near to the River Orwell and the current route of the A14. The priory was probably founded in the 13th century by Albert de Neville, possibly as a satellite of Woodbridge Priory. It was annexed by the monks of Woodbridge at some point in the 15th Century, possibly 1466. The priory was "ruinous" by 1514, although remains of the priory church can be found in the walls of Alnesbourne Priory Country Club and form the basis for the listing of the building as a Grade II listed building. The priory was in the old parish of Hallowtree or Halghetree the church of which formed part of its holding. The village is mentioned in the Domesday book as a very small village with about four households which was held by the church of Alnesbourn St Andrew before the conquest. At the time of the survey the village was held by Roger of Poitou.

Chantry Academy

Chantry Academy (formerly Suffolk New Academy and Chantry High School) is a secondary school with academy status in the Chantry area of Ipswich in the English county of Suffolk. The school educates children aged 11 to 16 and has around 750 pupils.The current Principal Craig D'Cunha took up the post in February 2015.

Westbourne Academy

Westbourne Academy (formerly Westbourne Sports College) is a secondary school with academy status located in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. It is a co-educational school for students aged 11–16 with post-16 provision accommodated at the Suffolk One sixth form centre. The Principal is Mr Garry Trott. The school converted to academy status in February 2013 and is now sponsored by the Academy Transformation Trust.

Sir Bobby Robson Bridge

The Sir Bobby Robson Bridge is a 60-metre cable-stayed pedestrian footbridge over the River Gipping in Ipswich, England, built at a cost of £800,000. The height of the structure makes it the 2nd highest structure in Ipswich. The bridge was named after Sir Bobby Robson, the ex–Ipswich Town manager, Newcastle United manager and England national football team manager, who died in 2009. Funded by the property developer Fairview, the bridge was constructed in 2009 and designed by Train and Kemp. It connects a residential development with the town centre. Before the construction of the bridge, residents had to walk a considerably long way to the next river crossing.

Orwell Bridge

The Orwell Bridge was opened to road traffic in 1982 and carries the A14 over the River Orwell just south of Ipswich in Suffolk, England. The main span is 190 metres which, at the time of its construction, was the longest pre-stressed concrete span in use. The total length is 1,287 metres from Wherstead to the site of the former Ipswich Airport. The width is 24 metres with an air draft of 43 metres. Pilings were sunk 40 metres into the river bottom. The main contractor was Stevin Construction B.V. a Dutch company. Construction of the bridge commenced in October 1979 and was completed in December 1982. The main span was constructed by using a balanced cantilever technique, casting sections on alternating sides of the pier in a weekly cycle. The bridge is constructed of a pair of continuous concrete box girders with expansion joints that allow for expansion and contraction. The girders are hollow, allowing for easier inspection, as well as providing access for services, including telecom, power and a 711mm water main from the nearby Alton Water reservoir. The necessary inspections still cause major disruption to traffic every six years; during the last inspection in the summer of 2005 the delays caused by lane closures and speed restrictions added between 30 to 60 minutes to journey times during the peak commuting periods. The bridge design took into consideration the impact on the Orwell Estuary, as well as the needs of the port of Ipswich. The location close to the southern edge of Ipswich was chosen to be convenient for the industrial areas of the West Bank Terminal and Ransomes Industrial Estate on the eastern end. The bridge was set at an angle to the river to get the best relationship to the surrounding terrain. The air draft of the central span was chosen to be as low as possible without adversely affecting port operations. Although some have said that the resulting hump affects visibility and road safety, there have not been enough incidents causing injury for the Highways Agency to identify it for greater detailed investigation and possible amendments. The consulting engineers were Sir William Halcrow and Partners. Frederick Gibberd Partners worked on the project to ensure the bridge was as sympathetic as possible to its surroundings, with the final design winning the approval of the Royal Fine Art Commission. The Department for Transport funded the project and, partly because of the bridge, paid for radars and cameras to be installed at the ports Orwell Navigation Service to monitor the river and the bridge. The bridge has become vital to Ipswich with over 60,000 vehicles using it per day, which is about 83% of its capacity. When the bridge is forced to close, either due to high winds or accidents, there is a significant impact on the urban road network, bringing many of Ipswichs roads to near-standstill. The bridge is expected to be running over capacity by 2015. The bridge appears in the 1987 Cold War drama The Fourth Protocol, in which two RAF helicopters are shown flying under it. Bridge bearing replacement works were carried out by Jackson Civil Engineering Ltd during a 52 hour closure of the north deck, carrying the eastbound A14, over the weekend of 11–14 February 2011. The new bridge bearings were designed and manufactured by the engineering company, Freyssinet Ltd.

Ancient House

The Ancient House, Ipswich, also known as Sparrowes House, is a Grade I listed building dating from the 15th century located in the Buttermarket area. In 1980 the building was acquired by Ipswich Borough Council. The building sports detailed pargeting, and also elaborate wood carvings around the front of the house. Four panels of pargeting show a Tudor impression of the world. The continents Africa, America, Asia and Europe are shown notably lacking Australia which was not discovered at the time. Africa is represented by a naked man holding a spear, Asia by a horse and a mosque-like building, Europe by a woman with a horse and castle, and America by a man with a dog at his feet. The front of the building as it can be seen today, was not an original feature of the building it was later added by Robert Sparrowe between 1660 and 1670. It bears the Royal Arms of King Charles II, and the words "honi soit qvi mal y pense". This is old French for "shame upon him who thinks evil of it", and is also the motto of the Order of the Garter.

Old London Road is a cricket ground in Copdock, Suffolk. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1847, when the Gentlemen of Suffolk played the Gentlemen of Norfolk. The ground hosted its first Minor Counties Championship match in 1992 when Suffolk played Norfolk. From 1992 to 2006, the ground hosted 5 Minor Counties Championship matches and 8 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches, the last of which saw Suffolk play Norfolk. The ground has also hosted a single List-A match between Suffolk and Denmark in the 2002 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy which was played in 2001. In local domestic cricket, the ground is the home of Copdock & Old Ipswichian Cricket Club that plays in the East Anglian Premier Cricket League as of 2012.

Constructed between 1970 and 1975 for the insurance firm now known as Willis Group Holdings, it is now seen as a landmark in the development of the 'high tech' architectural style. The building houses some 1,300 office staff in open plan offices spread over three floors.

It is a member of the General Assembly of Unitarian and Free Christian Churches, the umbrella organisation for British Unitarians. The present building was opened by John Fairfax in 1700. Much of the original interior remains intact.

Endeavour House

Endeavour House is the Suffolk County Council headquarters located in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Endeavour House was originally owned by the American-based energy and electric company, TXU Corporation. Located on Russell Road Ipswich, England; Endeavour House was constructed between 2001 and 2003 by Bovis Lend Lease (now Lend Lease Project Management & Construction) contractors as well as M&S contractors and was designed by TTSP architects. The building had an original construction cost of £28 million (Suffolk County Council paid £16.75 million for the building) and is one of the most energy efficient office buildings in Europe.
