Top Attractions in Burnley

Turf Moor

Turf Moor is an association football stadium in Burnley, Lancashire, England. It is the home ground of Championship club Burnley Football Club, who have played there since moving from its Calder Vale ground in 1883. The stadium, which is situated on Harry Potts Way, named so after the club's longest serving Manager, has a capacity of 21,401, all seated. It was one of the last remaining stadiums in England to have the players' tunnel and dressing rooms behind one of the goals, until it was covered for seating in time for the 2014-15 Premier League season and rebuilt between the David Fishwick and James Hargreaves stand. The ground originally consisted of just a pitch and the first grandstand was not built until 1885. Six years after this, the "Star" stand was erected and terracing was later added to the ends of the ground. After the Second World War, the stadium was redeveloped with all four stands being rebuilt. During the 1990s, the ground underwent further refurbishment when the Longside and Bee Hole End terraces were replaced by all-seater stands. Currently, the four stands at Turf Moor are the James Hargreaves Stand, the Jimmy McIlroy Stand, the Bob Lord Stand and the Cricket Field Stand. Burnley played their first match at the ground on 17 February 1883, losing 3-6 to local side Rawtenstall. When Prince Albert Victor opened a new hospital in Burnley in 1886, Turf Moor became the first football ground to be visited by a member of the British Royal Family. The first Football League match at the ground took place on 6 October 1888, with Fred Poland scoring the first competitive goal at the stadium. The record attendance at Turf Moor was set in 1924 when 54,755 people attended an FA Cup tie between Burnley and Huddersfield Town. In the same year, Turf Moor hosted its only FA Cup semi-final to date. In 1927, the stadium was the venue of an international match between England and Wales. Since then, the ground has been used to host matches in the European Under-19 Championship and European Under-21 Championship fixtures. In 2007, plans for expansion of Turf Moor were released to the public. The Burnley directors proposed a major development of the stadium, costing £20 million. The plans, which would incorporate the rebuilding of the Cricket Field Stand and the moving of the players' entrance tunnel, have been put on hold until the current financial climate improves. In 2009, following Burnley's promotion to the Premier League, the development of a second tier on the Bob Lord stand was announced. Director Paul Fletcher stated that the anticipated capacity of Turf Moor would eventually be 28,000 to cope with extra fans. However following the club's relegation from the Premier League in 2010, these plans were put on hold indefinitely. After again achieving promotion to the Premier League in 2014 further Ground renovations were undertaken to comply with new regulations include housing for International Media, relocation of the players tunnel and upgrades to seating in the David Fishwick Stand for away supporters. On 26 June 2014 the club unveiled a planning application for extensions to the Turf Moor front entrance including the rebuilding of the official Club Shop containing a first floor museum.

Towneley Park

Towneley Park is owned and managed by Burnley Borough Council and is the largest and most popular park in Burnley, Lancashire, England. The main entrance to the park is within a mile of the town centre and the park extends to the south east, covering an area of some 180 hectares . At the southern end of the park is Towneley Hall, Burnleys art gallery and museum. To the north are golf courses and playing fields and to the south 24 acres of broadleaved woodland. On the southern boundary is a working farm called Towneley Farm with pastures and plantations extending eastwards into Cliviger. The main entrance to the park is at Todmorden Road. The River Calder flows through the grounds. The local high school, Unity College, formerly Towneley High School, opened in September 2010, moving from its site on Towneley Holmes close to the main entrance to a new site on the east bank of the river. In order to provide a suitable vehicular access into the new school, the course of the Calder was slightly diverted. Deer Pond in Towneley Park is a Local Nature Reserve.

Singing Ringing Tree

The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture resembling a tree set in the landscape of the Pennine hill range overlooking Burnley, in Lancashire, England. Completed in 2006, it is part of the series of four sculptures within the Panopticons arts and regeneration project created by the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network . The project was set up to erect a series of 21st-century landmarks, or Panopticons, across East Lancashire as symbols of the renaissance of the area. Designed by architects Mike Tonkin and Anna Liu of Tonkin Liu, the Singing Ringing Tree is a 3-metre tall construction comprising pipes of galvanised steel which harness the energy of the wind to produce a slightly discordant and penetrating choral sound covering a range of several octaves. Some of the pipes are primarily structural and aesthetic elements, while others have been cut across their width enabling the sound. The harmonic and singing qualities of the tree were produced by tuning the pipes according to their length by adding holes to the underside of each. In 2007, the sculpture won the National Award of the Royal Institute of British Architects for architectural excellence......

Extwistle Hall

Briercliffe (or Briercliffe-with-Extwistle) is a civil parish in the borough of Burnley, in Lancashire, England. It is situated 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Burnley. The parish contains suburbs of Burnley (including Harle Syke and Haggate), and the rural area north-east of the town. Hamlets in the parish include Cockden, Lane Bottom and in the Extwistle area, the tiny hamlet of Roggerham. The parish adjoins the Burnley parish of Worsthorne-with-Hurstwood and the unparished area of Burnley, the Pendle parishes of Brierfield, Nelson and Trawden Forest and West Yorkshire. According to the United Kingdom Census 2011, the parish has a population of 4,031, an increase from 3,187 in the 2001 census. Briercliffe-with-Extwistle was once a township in the ancient parish of Whalley, becoming a civil parish in 1866. In 1894 the parish was dissolved, part moving into the county borough of Burnley, with the rest becoming a new parish called Briercliffe, forming part of the Burnley Rural District.

Burnley Central railway station

Burnley Central railway station is a station in the town of Burnley, Lancashire and is on the East Lancashire Line. It is managed by Northern, which also provides its passenger service. Following the singling of the track in 1986, Burnley Central has one platform in use, together with a small ticket office, waiting area and public address facility. There are information boards at the entrance of the station and in the booking hall, along with passenger information screens on the platform. The booking office is staffed on weekday mornings and early afternoons only - at other times, tickets must be purchased on the train (there being no ticket vending machines available). It is fully accessible to disabled travellers, with a ramp from the entrance to the waiting room/ticket office & platform.

Rose Grove railway station

Rose Grove railway station is located in the western part of Burnley in Lancashire, England, 11 miles (17 km) east of Blackburn railway station. The Caldervale Line from Hebden Bridge and the East Lancashire Line converge at Gannow Junction, just east of Rose Grove. The semi-fast Blackpool North to York service via Burnley Manchester Road does not call at Rose Grove, but the recently introduced Blackburn to Manchester Victoria via Todmorden one does do so. Trains either take the now single track line to Burnley Central and on to terminate at Colne or travel over Copy Pit summit into West Yorkshire en route to Todmorden and hence to Rochdale & Manchester. The station is a long island platform, with a disused bay platform at each end - one formerly used by local trains to Blackburn via Padiham and the other for services to Todmorden and Colne. It is unstaffed, but there are passenger information screens and a long-line PA system in place to provide train running information. Waiting shelters & a ticket vending machine are also available. Access to the platform is via a staircase from the road above, so there is currently no step-free access on offer for disabled users. Rose Grove was formerly the site of an engine shed, which was one of the last to house steam locomotives on British Railways. The site is now beneath the M65 motorway, which runs beside the railway at this point. During the mid to late 1980s, Rose Grove was the starting point for an Inter City "Holidaymaker" Saturday service - in the 1989 timetable this ran as the 06:50 to Paignton via Preston and Birmingham New Street and the terminus for the 14:10 from Paignton return journey. The Blackpool North-York service initially called at Rose Grove after its reinstatement in 1984 to allow interchange with trains to and from Colne, Nelson, Brierfield and the two other Burnley stations at Burnley Barracks and Central. However this stop was removed from the service in the early 1990s with East Lancashire Line passengers wishing to travel eastwards towards Yorkshire having to change at Accrington instead. The station became unstaffed in the 1980s, following the demolition of the station buildings. The last remnants of the Great Harwood Loop towards Padiham have also disappeared, the line having been closed in 1993 with the end of oil traffic to the power station there.
