Haga trädgård

Haga Trädgård is a garden located at the northern end of Haga Park, Solna, Sweden. Haga Trädgård was founded by King Gustav III in the 1785. It was intended that it should become the kitchen garden to the royal household. At the time Gustav III had plans to build a very large palace just 300m from Haga Trädgård but eventually due to lack of available finance the palace was never built. The Haga Tradgard gardens were indeed established and provided the royal household with many different local and exotic vegetables and fruits. In 1812 the King purchased 20 figs from the gardens at a cost of 2 kronor each. At the time a garden employee earned just 7.5 öre per hour. The gardens flourished and became a well known source for flowers and vegetables. In 1917 the department store NK took over the gardens to grow fresh vegetables for Stockholms inhabitants. It was at the tail end of the first World War and fresh vegetables were quite scarce. In 1917, NK built a splendid conservatory which now is Stockholms oldest conservatory. In 1933 the town council of Stockholm took over the gardens and produced flowers for official use and for embellishment of squares and gardens. In 1989 Stephen and Marie Fried opened the Fjärilshuset in Haga Gardens which once again turned the area into a visitor attraction. The butterfly house was so successful that Stephen and Marie Fried bought all of the buildings from the town council with the Royal Swedish Land Agency retaining the land. Nowadays Fjärilshuset is a national museum with the buildings being held privately and the land leased by Fjarilshuset Haga Tradgard AB. Haga Tradgard is successively being restored so that it mirrors its historical continuity.

Haga Palace

Haga Palace, formerly known as the Queens Pavilion, is located in the Haga Park, Solna Municipality in Metropolitan Stockholm, Sweden. The palace, built in 1802 – 1805, was modelled after ballet-master Gallodiers Italian villa in Drottningholm by architect Carl Christoffer Gjörwell on appointment by King Gustaf IV Adolf for the royal children. It has been the home or summerhouse for several members of the Swedish royal family – most notably it was the birthplace of the present King – until 1966 when King Gustaf VI Adolf transferred its disposal to the government and it was turned into a guesthouse for distinguished foreign official visitors. In 2009, it was announced by Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt that the rights of disposal to the palace will be transferred back to the royal court to be used by Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, and her husband, Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland, as a wedding gift in 2010. They moved into Haga Palace after their wedding on 19 June.

Confidencen

Confidencen, or Ulriksdals slottsteater, is a Swedish opera stage. Confidencen is Swedens oldest rococo theatre situated in the National City Park on the grounds of Ulriksdal Palace outside Stockholm. The buildings original structure was built in 1671. It was first used as a stable block but then converted to a theatre in 1753 when Queen Louisa Ulrika decorated it as one of her prime theatres: for twenty years thereafter the stage housed the Du Londel Troupe. It was one of a few chosen theatres maintained by the Swedish Royal Family and used until her sons, king Gustav IIIs death in 1792. That king himself performed there as well as the great Swedish national poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman. Confidencen is part of the Ulriksdal Palace estate, one of the five official residences of the Swedish Royal Family. The theater has been run by Kjerstin Dellert since the 1980s.

Hagaparken

Hagaparken, or simply Haga in Solna Municipality just north of Stockholm, Sweden is a vast and popular nature area, with large parks, lakes, woods and gardens. Within the park is Haga Palace, King Gustav IIIs Pavilion, the Chinese Pavilion, the Echo Temple, the Turkish Kiosk, an older castle ruin and several other interesting buildings on the grounds . Included in the Haga Park is also the Royal Burial Ground of the Swedish Royal family, where several members and ancestors of the present Swedish royal Bernadotte family rest. Hagaparken has historically been favoured by Swedish royalty, especially Gustav III who founded it and developed it 1780-1797, and by the famous troubadour Carl Michael Bellman, a contemporary of Gustav III, who is much associated with Haga due to the lyrics of his compositions, poems and his writings. The song Fjäriln vingad is entirely dedicated to the park.

Morianbron

Morianbron is a small bridge in the gardens of the Ulriksdal Palace in Solna, Sweden, named after the pair of sculptures of so-called blackamoors standing by the bridge. Arguably the smallest bridge in the Swedish capital, it also passes over the indeed small stream Igelbäcken flowing through the gardens. The low wooden bridge is on either side flanked by two bronze sculptures painted in black of two black men dressed in loinclothes pulling a fishing net passing under the bridge. The two sculptures, moulded in the early 19th century by the sculptor Per Lundgren, were brought to the Ulriksdal Palace from the royal gardens at Hagaparken. There, they were standing by the network of canals that once flew through the park. According to an amusing story, a lady standing on the bridge fell in love with the two men and, not being able to choose between them, threw herself into the stream to end her pang of love. The anecdote not only suits the romantic and picturesque environment, it also reflects the fancy for exotic people prevalent during the 18th and early 19th century, typically represented by artists such as Eugène Delacroix.

Mall of Scandinavia

Mall of Scandinavia is a shopping mall currently under construction, located in Solna, Sweden. It is scheduled to open in November 2015 and will have 230 stores, many of them with double-height storefronts up to 8 m tall. About 20-25% of the leasable area will be dedicated to experiences, including 20 restaurants and a 15 screen multiplex with the first purpose-built commercial IMAX theatre in the Nordic region. The shopping mall will have 4,000 parking spaces and a retail gross leasable area of 101,000 m2, making it one of the largest shopping malls in Scandinavia. The building will also house an additional 42,000 m2 of office space and condominiums. The project cost is estimated at SEK 5,8 billion and the mall is owned by Unibail-Rodamco with Peab as the main contractor. Located near the Solna commuter rail station, approximately seven minutes from the Stockholm city centre, it is part of the Arenastaden project, which includes 450,000 m2 of new office space, the Friends national football arena and 1,500 residential units.

Karolinska Institutet

Karolinska Institutet (KI, unofficially known as the Karolinska Institute and in older English texts as the Royal Caroline Institute) is a medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area, Sweden, and one of the largest and most prestigious medical universities in the world. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. It consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. Karolinska Institutet was founded in 1810 on Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm. Karolinska Institutet consistently ranks among the top universities in the world on a number of prestigious ranking tables, and is currently considered the ninth best university to study medicine in the world. Karolinska Institutet is Sweden's third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). Research at Karolinska Institutet accounts for more than 40% of all academic medical research in Sweden. The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. It is one of Sweden's largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30 percent of the medical training and 40 percent of the medical academic research conducted nationwide. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the Ph.D. projects are conducted in English.

Karolinska University Hospital

The Karolinska University Hospital (Swedish: Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset) is a university hospital affiliated with Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, with two major sites in the municipalities of Solna and Huddinge. The present day Karolinska University Hospital is the result of a 2004 merger between the former Huddinge University Hospital (Huddinge universitetssjukhus) in Huddinge, south of Stockholm, and the Karolinska Hospital (Karolinska Sjukhuset) in Solna, north of Stockholm. The new hospital has about 15,000 employees and 1,340 patient beds. The Karolinska University Hospital is closely affiliated with the Karolinska Institutet. It incorporates the Astrid Lindgren Children’s hospital in Solna and the Children’s Hospital in Huddinge. The Karolinska University Hospital in Solna is being replaced by the New Karolinska Solna University Hospital.

SAS Frösundavik Office Building

The SAS Frösundavik Office Building is an office building in Frösundavik , Solna Municipality, Sweden, north of Stockholm. It currently serves as well as formerly served as the head office of Scandinavian Airlines and the SAS Group. The SAS head office was for a brief period located in a different building on the property of Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sigtuna Municipality. In 2000 Jurian van Meel, author of The European Office: Office Design and National Context, wrote that the former SAS head office "is probably Sweden's best known 'groundscraper'"; Meel stated that Sweden's groundscrapers are more well known compared to high-rise buildings, which according to Meel are not common in Sweden. The building now houses offices of E. Merck AB, the Swedish representation of Merck KGaA Germany. CSC Sverige AB, a subsidiary of Computer Sciences Corporation, also has its offices in the building.

Filmstaden

Filmstaden was a film studio situated in Råsunda, Solna Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden. Built by the main Swedish film producer at the time, Svensk Filmindustri, in 1919–1920, Filmstaden was one of the most modern film studios in Europe. Some 400 movies have been created at Filmstaden. The first movie to be filmed at Filmstaden was The Phantom Carriage by director Victor Sjöström. Practically all Swedish actors and film directors of the 20th century had some connection with Filmstaden. In 1969, Svensk Filminstustri finally left Filmstaden, and the studios were used by small film producers, production of television dramas and the Riksteatern Theatre. One of the last major films to partly have been filmed at Filmstaden was The Emigrants. Most of the buildings were quite well preserved until the beginning of the 21st century when Filmstaden had to make way for a housing development. Some buildings, however, have been renovated and Svensk Filmindustri has moved its headquarters back to a former studio building.
