Top Attractions in Troms

Tromso

Tromsø ; Northern Sami: Romsa; Kven: Tromssa) is a city and municipality in Troms county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Tromsø. Outside of Norway, Tromso and Tromsö are alternative spellings of the city. Tromsø is considered as the northernmost city in the world with a population above 50,000. Tromsø lies in Northern Norway. The municipality has a population of 72,066, but with influx of students it has over 75,000 most of the year. It is the largest urban area in Northern Norway and the third largest north of the Arctic Circle (following Murmansk and Norilsk). Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the island of Tromsøya, 350 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. In 2012, Tromsøya had a population of 36,088. Substantial parts of the urban area are also situated on the mainland to the east, and on parts of Kvaløya—a large island to the west. Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. Tromsø Airport connects the city to many destinations in Europe. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø. The city is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer. Some of Norway's best-known musicians, Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge of the electronica duo Röyksopp and Lene Marlin grew up and started their careers in Tromsø. Noted electronic musician Geir Jenssen also hails from Tromsø. The most famous soccer team in the area, Tromsø IL, currently plays in the Norwegian Premier League.

Tromsdalen

Tromsdalen is a valley in the city of Tromsø in Troms county, Norway. It is located just to the east of the city centre on the mainland along the coast of the Tromsøysundet. The 5.13-square-kilometre village area located in this valley has a population of 16,071; giving the area a population density of 3,133 inhabitants per square kilometre . Tromsdalen is connected to the island of Tromsøya by the Tromsø Bridge. European route E8 runs through the northern part of Tromsdalen. The Tromsdalselva river flows through the valley. The Arctic Cathedral is located in the valley. Popular attractions in Tromsdalen are the Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen aerial tramway to the top of a nearby fell; the tramway ends at an elevation of 420 metres where the view is stunning. The mountain Tromsdalstinden is located at the eastern end of Tromsdalen and reaches an elevation of 1,238 metres . The climb to the top of this mountain is very popular with the Tromsø residents, since mountain climbing equipment is not needed.

Polaria

Polaria is the worlds most northerly aquarium. It is located in Tromsø, in northern Norway. Rather than a mainly scientific aquarium such as the one in Bergen in the Norwegian midlands, Polaria, which opened in May 1998, is designed to be an educational experience, with particular emphasis on displays for children. Most of the displays focus on the northerly islands of Svalbard. There is a five-screen panoramic cinema, an "Arctic Walkway" area containing displays of polar exploration equipment, stuffed animals and simulated permafrost, many conventional aquaria displaying local marine life as well as open tanks and display tanks containing rock-shore animals, baby fish and other child-friendly exhibits. Its centerpiece is an open pool containing a group of bearded seals, Erignathus barbatus. These are trained and there are regular displays, as much to keep the animals active and healthy as for public entertainment. The seal enclosure has observation blisters set into its sides, so that visitors can look up at the animals from underneath, and a submerged walkway in a transparent tunnel across the bottom, allowing close access to the animals in their natural environment. The building itself is also worthy of note. Its striking design represents ice floes that have been pressed up on land by the rough seas of the Arctic. This attractive piece of modern architecture echoes the Arctic Cathedral across the harbour in Tromsdalen on the mainland. One of Norways most famous and successful seal hunting ships, the Polstjerna has been preserved in a separate museum building less than a hundred metres away from Polaria. Tickets to the ship museum can be bought from Polaria.

Torsvåg

Torsvåg is a fishing village on the far northwestern coast of Vannøya island in the municipality of Karlsøy in Troms county, Norway. The nearest city is Tromsø about 90 kilometres south of Torsvåg. There is much archeological evidence that show that there has been settlements in Torsvåg since the Stone Age. Today Torsvåg includes the village on Vannøya and also an area on the islet of Kåja. There is a causeway connecting the two places which forms a nice harbor surrounded by the fishing village. The breakwaters at the entrance to the harbor form a snug port at the threshold of the big seas. The Vanna fish processing plant, «Torsvågbruket», is located on Kåja island and Torsvåg Lighthouse is on the highest point of the island. Today, Torsvåg only has between 10 and 20 inhabitants, but earlier in its history this fishing village often had hundreds of residents.

Jiehkkevárri

Jiehkkevárri is a mountain on the border of the municipalities of Lyngen and Tromsø in Troms county, Norway. It is the highest mountain in Troms county and has the second highest prominence among Norwegian mountains. The 1,834-metre tall mountain sits about 10 kilometres northeast of the village of Lakselvbukt and about 17 kilometres southwest of Lyngseidet. The first people known to have climbed it were Geoffrey Hastings and Elias Hogrenning in 1899. Its summit is ice-capped and any ascent involves a crossing of crevassed glaciers. Therefore, climbing it needs guiding by experienced mountaineers. In winter, an experienced ski-mountaineer can traverse Jiehkkevárri in one long day, descending almost from the top via the steep, North-East facing couloir, described by the late Andreas Fransson as "a future classic for the new generation of mountain skiers". The descent route is exposed to serac fall from above, and is generally not recommended for ascending.

Ånderdalen National Park

Ånderdalen National Park is located on the large island of Senja in Troms county, Norway. The 125-square-kilometre park lies within the municipalities of Torsken and Tranøy. The park was established by royal decree on 6 February 1970 and it was enlarged in 2004. The national park preserves this Northern Norwegian coastal region in a natural state, including pine and birch forest and alpine plants. The national park had no moose before 1940, but it now has a permanent population. It is also an important calving and grazing area for semi-domesticated reindeer. The most common smaller animals are red foxes, stoats, hares, small rodents, and two species of shrews. Seals occur at the heads of the fjords and otters are often seen along rivers. Trout and char are common, and salmon run right up the river to the lake Åndervatn.

Reisa National Park

Reisa National Park is a national park in Nordreisa municipality, Troms county, Norway that was established by royal decree on 28 November 1986. The park is full of wildlife. The rough-legged buzzard is the most common bird of prey, but hikers may also spot golden eagle, kestrels, and gyrfalcon. Wolverines and lynx live in the park and surrounding mountains. Since the Sámi name for part of the gorge, Njállaávzi, means Arctic fox gorge, the Arctic fox must have lived here a long time. The largest Norwegian predator, the brown bear, is occasionally seen in the park. The Reisa river has cut a valley and a canyon in the mountain plateau, producing the long fertile valley called Reisadalen. Waterfalls cascade into the valleys and gorges. The waterfall Mollisfossen is one of the more spectacular falls at 269 metres in height. The valley and adjacent mountains have been valuable for hunting, animal trapping, and fishing for centuries. Snares are sometimes still set to catch ptarmigan and willow grouse in the traditional manner. Scots pine were used for timber and to produce tar. Nearly every farm in the valley earned extra income making tar, and production continued far into the 20th century. The remains of many tar kilns can still be found. The park and surrounding areas provided spring, summer, and autumn grazing for semi-domesticated reindeer. In winter, the reindeer in this region graze in the Kautokeino district in nearby Finnmark county; in summer, they are on the coast in the northwest.

Rohkunborri National Park

Rohkunborri National Park is a national park in Troms county, Norway, that was established in 2011. The park consists of a 571-square-kilometre protected area, and is located in Bardu municipality along the border with Sweden, about 30 kilometres southeast of Setermoen and about 50 kilometres northeast of Narvik. Rohkunborri borders on the Swedish Vadvetjåkka National Park to the south, and it is located less than 10 kilometres south of Øvre Dividal National Park. The park includes parts of the Sørdalen valley, the large lake Geavdnjajávri, and the mountain Rohkunborri. The large lakes Altevatnet and Leinavatnet both lie just north of the park boundary. The nature varies from rich boreal deciduous forest on the lower elevations to alpine tundra higher up. The park is home to brown bears, wolverines, and lynx, as well as the snowy owl, gyrfalcon, and reindeer . There are also wetlands and alpine vegetation on bedrock rich in lime, as well as bogs. The Arctic rhododendron is present. The lakes in the eastern part have Arctic char. The mountains on both sides of the canyon reach up to 1,500 metres above sea level.

Trondenes Historical Center

Trondenes Historical Center is a museum located in Trondenes, in the town of Harstad, in Troms county, Norway. The museum covers the history of Trondenes and the surrounding areas. The museum displaying more than 2,000 years of history in the region, which was once a Viking Era power centre. Local chieftains included Thorir Hund, who killed Norways Patron Saint, Saint Olav during the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030. The Trondenes Historical Centre tells the history of the area from the early Viking settlement to the 1940-1945 Nazi German occupation, with paintings, artifacts and statues depicting their history. The museum is situated near the historic, stone Trondenes Church. The exhibition is permanent, the main focus being on the Medieval age period. The museum building contains a cafeteria and conference rooms, amounting to 1,860 m2 in total. Trondenes Historical Center was inaugurated in May 1997 and is now a division of Sør-Troms Museum.

Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

The Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden is the worlds northernmost botanic garden. It is located in Tromsø, Norway, and is run by the Tromsø University Museum. It opened in 1994, and is open from late May to early October. The garden displays Arctic and alpine plants from all over the northern hemisphere. Entrance is free of charge. The garden is located to the southeast of the University of Tromsø Campus, commanding a view of the mountains to the east and south. The location, corresponding to the north coast of Alaska, invites thought of an extreme Arctic climate. However, a branch of the Gulf Stream sweeping up the coast of North Norway provides a moderating influence, and the climate of Tromsø is one of relatively mild winters and cool summers ). From May 15 until July 27, the sun is continuously above the horizon in Tromsø. The two months of midnight sun provide some compensation to the plants for the short growing season and the low temperatures. In the months of May, June and July the theoretically possible number of hours of sunshine is 623, 720 and 695, respectively. The average hours of actual sunshine is about 200 for each of these months. From November 21 until January 17 the sun never rises. Snow generally covers the ground from October or November on, and will accumulate until the beginning of April. Snow then gradually melts and the ground will usually be bare around mid May at sea level, while lingering on far into the summer at higher altitudes. The season in the Botanic Garden is usually from end of May until mid October. Kvænangsfjellet

Kvænangsfjellet is a mountainous area in the municipalities of Kvænangen and Nordreisa in in Troms county, Norway. European route E6 traverses the mountain through a route from Oks Fjord in the south to Kvænang Fjord in the north. In the winter, route E6 is closed for 10 to 15 days due to snow storms. A short stretch of the route is exposed to the weather, a gap near the route's highest point, at 402 meters . During the Second World War, the German occupation authorities built a wooden superstructure approximately 6 kilometers long using labor from the Veidal Prison Camp to protect the route. The structure was destroyed in scorched earth tactics when the Germans withdrew to the south in 1944. The Gildetun Inn is located on Kvænangsfjellet and offers accommodation and meals during tourist season. It is located at a vantage place where tourists are able to photograph the mountain and fjord landscape. It also has a taxidermy display of local birds and other animals. Kvænangsfjellet is used in the summer by Sami reindeer herders.
