Top Attractions in Eindhoven

Evoluon

The Evoluon is a conference centre and former science museum erected by the electronics and electrical company Philips at Eindhoven in the Netherlands in 1966. Since its construction, it has become a landmark and a symbol for the city. The building is unique due to its very futuristic design, resembling a landed flying saucer. It was designed by architect Louis Christiaan Kalff, while the exhibition it housed was conceived by James Gardner. The building was based on an idea by Frits Philips, who originally made a sketch of the building on a paper napkin. Frits Philips wanted to give the people of Eindhoven a beautiful and educational gift to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the company that bears his family name. Its concrete dome is 77 metres in diameter and is held in place by 169 kilometres of reinforcing steel bars. In the 1960s and 70s the Evoluon attracted large visitor numbers, since its interactive exhibitions were a new and unique concept in the Netherlands at that time. But when competing science museums opened in other cities, the number of visitors began to decline. After several years of losing money, the original museum closed down in 1989 and the Evoluon was converted into a conference centre, opening in 1998. In the UK the Evoluon is chiefly remembered from Bert Haanstras wordless short film entitled simply Evoluon, commissioned by Philips to publicise the museum, and shown as a trade test colour film on BBC television from 1968 to 1972. In October 2013 the Evoluon was used to stage four 3D-concerts by the German electronic band Kraftwerk, each before an audience of 1,200 spectators. Key band member Ralf Hütter handpicked the venue for its retro-futuristic look. Bespoke 3D-visuals of the saucer section of the building descending from space were used in the live rendition of their track Spacelab.

Eindhoven Museum

The Eindhoven Museum is an archaeological open-air museum in Eindhoven, Netherlands, focusing on the Iron Age and Middle Ages in the province of North Brabant. The museum is situated in the Genneper Parken area at the south side of the city. It focuses on the daily lives and routines of people in the time periods mentioned, through demonstrations and recreations of buildings, practices and routines. For example, there are demonstrations of cooking on open fire, of games played in the Middle Ages and groups of school children are allowed to spend the night in the stables. The museum has several distinct target audiences. Primary among these are school children, who comprise most of the visitors on weekdays. In the weekends and during holiday season the museum focuses on regular tourists. The museum features a lot of living history exhibits as well as semi-historical reenactments. During holiday seasons extra activities are staged for children. The museum also arranges historically themed corporate and family outings outside of opening hours. Some 60.000 people visited the museum in 2005.

Inkijkmuseum

The Inkijkmuseum is an originally themed "micro museum" in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. It is located in the washhouse of the former linen factory Van den Briel & Verster on the Dommelstraat. The original factory was shut down in 1936, after which the washhouse was abandoned for a time. It was then converted into a bicycle parking area for the city police, then into youth center Effenaar and cultural center Cultureel Centrum 2B. It was also in use as private housing at that time. The ground floor of the building has been in use as the Inkijkmuseum since March 21, 2004. The idea of the "look-in" museum is to host small exhibits which are viewed by the public from outside the building, by looking in through the windows. Such a micro-exhibit might consists of works of art, musical instruments, cultural anthropological artifacts or objects linked to a historical event. The museum underwent a short renovation in 2008, reopening on October 17.

Al-Fourqaan mosque

The Al-Fourqaan mosque is a salafi Islamic mosque in which is part of Al-fourqaan Islamic Center in Eindhoven, Netherlands. The mosque received media attention since 2005 for its jihadist imam Eisha Bersham from Bosnia. Intelligence service AIVD classified him as a threat to national security, and minister for integration and immigration Rita Verdonk responded by banning him from the country as an 'unwanted foreigner'. Initially an Amsterdam court ruled that the imam could stay, but on 27 April 2007 the Council of State finally ruled Bersham would be banned from the Netherlands for the next ten years. Two other men regularly prayed in the Al-Fourqaan mosque; Ahmed El Bakiouli and Khalid El Hassnoui. They were reportedly recruited by Algerian terrorist group Groupe Salafiste pour la Prédication et le Combat to fight in the holy war. They were both killed in Kashmir where Muslims have been fighting a separatist war.

Philips Stadion

The Philips Stadion is a football stadium in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and it is the home of PSV (Philips Sport Vereniging), also known as PSV Eindhoven. With a capacity of 35,000, it is the third-largest football stadium in the country. Established as the Philips Sportpark, it was constructed as a sports field for Philips employees in 1910. The Philips Elftal played football matches from 1911 until 1913, when the team was succeeded by PSV Eindhoven. Since 1913, PSV has used the original ground as its home base. The stadium has gone through several extensions in its history: after a wooden stand in 1916, seating and standing places slowly enclosed the field throughout the first decades. Two extensive renovations in the 1970s and 1990s first created a covered stadium, and then a two-tiered ground with extensive commercial spaces. The completion of the four corners in 2002 eventually led to its current capacity. The Philips Stadion currently holds a four-star rating by UEFA. It has hosted a range of Netherlands national team fixtures since 1971. In 2013, PSV's reserve team Jong PSV also played their league matches at the stadium. They now play their games at the trainingcomplex De Herdgang. Furthermore the Philips stadion was the location for three UEFA Euro 2000 group stage matches, as well as the 2006 UEFA Cup Final. Aside from football-related purposes, the ground is incidentally used for music concerts.

Porthos

Porthos is with its height of 101 metres the second tallest building in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. The building is used as an apartment building and has a total of 108 units. Porthos has 32 floors. Porthos has been build between the spring of 2004 and 2006. ING Real Estate Development was the developer of the apartment building. That company was given the task to renovate and expand a shopping center called Woensel. The municipality of Eindhoven asked ING to add residential use to the shopping center. The company added three residential buildings to Woensel, collectively called "De Drie Musketiers" (Dutch for The Three Musketeers), of which Porthos is the tallest. Porthos has been build on top of the shopping center. Also an underground parking garage was built underneath the apartment building. The firm Engelman designed Porthos with help of the engineering firm Zonneveld. The building was built by Hurks at a cost of €24.5 million. Porthos consists of prefab concrete parts and because of that the building was topped out within one hundred days. When the prefab elements were placed on their locations, they already had been equipped with glass and pipes. The exterior of Porthos is made of ceramic bricks and aluminium. The chambranles consist of aluminium as well. A rooftop terrace, that is only accessible to the inhabitants of the penthouses, is situated on top of the apartment building. All apartment units are owner-occupied and according to Gerard van de Ven, manager real estate at Hurks, seventeen units had been sold previous to the start of the construction. Almost all units had been sold at the time the building was finished, according to Van de Ven. On November 14, 2007, it was announced that Porthos won the 2007 Betonprijs in the category "execution". The judge said the construction of Porthos didn't cause much disturbance because of the short duration of the construction and because of the relatively small space the construction required. According to the judge, this was the result of the extensive prefabrication.

Eindhoven Stadion railway station

Eindhoven Stadion (English: Eindhoven Stadium) is a small railway station located in Eindhoven, Netherlands and is opened in 1990. The station, located about 900 meter from Eindhoven railway station, is operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen but is only serviced in the event of football matches or other special events at Philips Stadion, the stadium of football club PSV Eindhoven. The station has only one simple platform which has a length of approximately 250 to 275 meters. In the event of football matches or other major events at the stadium, trains traveling between Eindhoven Strijp-S and Eindhoven will stop at the station. When leaving the stadium it is only possible to travel in the direction of Eindhoven station, where many Intercity services go from. There are no facilities at the station, although it is equipped with fences and cameras to prevent violence. The station is completely closed as it is only possible to access and exit the station through a pedestrian bridge which connects directly to Philips Stadion. However, stairs alongside the station can be used in the event of an emergency.

Het Apollohuis

Het Apollohuis was a space for experimental music and visual arts, "focused in particular on...sound art, new music, performance art and the new media," founded in Eindhoven, Netherlands, by Remko Scha and Paul Panhuysen in a former 19th century cigar factory in 1980. Partly funded by their own publishing house, the space was closed in 2001 after their grant was discontinued. "Between 1980 and 2001, Het Apollohuis organized 253 art exhibitions, 476 concerts and performances, 46 public lectures, symposia and several festivals ." Artists-in-residence, asked to create an exhibition, an installation or a publication, where provided with an apartment, studio space, and materials. The organization gave out a series of books and publications on each anniversary that the building was open. Part of the archive has been acquired by the Van Abbe Museum.
