Top Attractions in Bengaluru

Hebbal

Hebbal is an Assembly Constituency area in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, which was once indicative of the north endpoint of the city. Though originally famous for Hebbal Lake, it is now better known for the serpentine maze of flyovers that network the Outer Ring Road and Bellary Road. The flyover spans a length of 5.23 kilometres over all the loops combined. The flyover was built by Gammon India. The lake area is well known for the park, the boating facility, and for the bird watching opportunities. Hebbal used to be the end of the corporation limits of Bangalore City. One can still see the milestone between the Baptist hospital and checkpost. Bangalore has now grown quite a bit towards north, beyond these marks. L&T factory, which was established in 70's, is also close to Hebbal. Raintree Boulevard project is coming up at same place before GKVK University. All arterial roads and road networks leading to the BIAL intersect at Hebbal. Further, BIAL has its office on the National Highway exit of the Hebbal flyover in Gayathri Lake Front. L&T is doing tree transplantation in Hebbal Area at Raintree Boulevard Project.

Hulimavu cave Temple

The Hulimav Cave Temple, also known as the Hulimav Shiva Cave Temple or simply the Cave Temple, is located in Hulimavu, Bannerghatta Road, Karnataka, India, very close to the BGS National Public School. The Cave Temple is administered by the Sri Sri Bala Gangadaraswami Mutt. It is stated that a saint did tapas in the cave for many years and his samadhi is also found inside. One can feel the vibration if one enters the cave and stands before the samadhi. There are three main deities consecrated inside. While a Shiva Lingam occupies the centre, on one side there is a Devi idol and, on the other side, the idol of Ganesha has been consecrated. On the other side of the cave, a very old dhyana mantap is also found. The cave appears to be centuries old. When one goes inside the cave and sits in meditation for few hours it is sure to feel the vibration of the god and get mental peace. The temple is placed within the natural cave inside the rocks. The detailed history of the temple is however not available, but it was stated that the temple is as old as 4–5 hundred years and surrounding the cave BGS National Public School built by Sri Sri Balagangadaraswami has be established and a math running from Sri Adichunchanagiri Maha Samsthana math. Visitors are encouraged to learn about and go around to each of the deities inside the cave. The samadhi with the photo of the saint is also there. For unknown reasons such temples have not gained publicity even though those who know the temple visit it very often.

Jayanagar

Jayanagar is a residential and commercial neighbourhood of the city of Bangalore in Karnataka, India. It is sub-divided into 7 wards. The foundation of Jayanagar was laid in the year 1948. It is known for Gramadevata Goddess Festival . All the Dravidian set of language speaking people are found here living harmoniously. It is surrounded by Basavanagudi, JP Nagar, Banashankari 2nd stage, Gurappanapalya, Suddaguntepalya and BTM Layout among other areas. It is also in proximity to the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens. Jayanagar comprises ten area blocks (including 4th 'T' Block), of which the 3rd and 4th Blocks are largely commercial hubs, while the rest are mostly residential. A 2010 survey by DNA Bangalore ranked Jayanagar as the most liveable place in Bangalore and still maintains the old charm of the city.

St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral

St. Francis Xaviers Cathedral is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bangalore in India. Initially, Bangalore was the seat of the diocese of Mysore from 1886 to 1940 and during this time, St. Patricks church in Bangalore was the cathedral of the diocese. When the diocese of Mysore was bifurcated on 13 February 1940 to form the diocese of Bangalore, St. Francis Xaviers church was chosen as its cathedral. The first church of St. Francis Xavier was constructed in 1851. Due to the huge increase in the catholic population, this church eventually became inadequate. Hence in 1911, the foundation stone was laid for a new church. This church was inaugurated on 26 May 1932, which would become a cathedral in 1940. On its platinum jubilee in 2009, two new domes of the facade were inaugurated. Bangalore archbishop Bernard Moras re-dedicated the cathedral to St. Francis Xavier. The domes had been constructed along with several other renovations. Though they were part of the original plan of the cathedral, they could not be completed due to lack of funds. The cathedrals large compound has three schools: St. Aloysius, St. Anthonys and St. Rocks. There is also a Shrine dedicated to St. Anthony.

Bangalore Club

Located in Bangalore, India, The Bangalore Club is the oldest club in the city, founded in 1868. It counts among its previous members Winston Churchill and the Maharajah of Mysore. A ledger on display in the main building of the club is open to a page that has a list of "irrecoverable debts" that were written off by the club. One of these is the sum Rs.13, owed by Winston Churchill. Membership at present for the category of new permanent members is closed, but last when open, had a waiting list of over 30 years. The club has limited number of restaurants, bars, libraries and sports facilities i.e.: Badminton, Squash, Billiards, Table Tennis, Swimming Pools, Tennis courts, Bridge, Gymnasium etc., and is built in the colonial style. In addition to these, it also has a number of stores for the convenience of its members, open to only club members. Formerly known as the Bangalore United Services Club , it was originally formed for exclusive use by British and later, after independence, Indian military officers stationed in the cantonment. At present, it is largely a civilian club. Members of the services, however, continue to enjoy special privileges. The club has many rules and regulations which could be more of an effect of a colonial hangover, but lately there has been a concentrated effort to rectify the same. Members are also able to visit other affiliated clubs around India, as well as many parts of the world. The Club has tough dress regulations at several places which upholds the tradition of the club at all times

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace

Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace, in Bangalore, India, is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture and was the summer residence of the Mysorean ruler Tipu Sultan. Hyder Ali commenced its construction within the walls of the Bangalore Fort, and it was completed during the reign of Tipu Sultan in 1791. After Tipu Sultan's death in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, the British Administration used the palace for its Secretariat before moving to Attara Kacheri in 1868. Today the government of Karnataka maintains the palace, which is located at the center of Old Bangalore near the Kalasipalyam bus stand, as a tourist spot. The structure was built entirely of teak and stands adorned with pillars, arches and balconies. It is believed that Tipu Sultan used to conduct his durbar from the eastern and western balconies of the upper floor. There are four smaller rooms in the corners of first floor which were used to known as Zenana Quarters.[1] There are beautiful floral motifs embellishing the walls of the palace. The site also holds a painting of grand throne visualized by Tipu Sultan himself. Coated with gold sheets and stuck with precious emerald stones, Tipu had vowed never to use it until he completely defeated the English Army. After Tipu Sultan's death, the British dismantled the throne and auctioned its parts as it was too expensive for a single person to buy whole. The rooms in the ground floor have been converted into a small museum showcasing various achievements of Tipu Sultan and his administration. There are newly done portraits of the people and places of that time. There is a replica of Tipu's Tiger, which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Tipu Sultan's clothes and his crown are present in silver and gold pedestals. The silver vessels given by a general to Hyder Ali is also displayed. The Horticulture Department, Government of Karnataka, maintains the area in front of the palace as a garden and lawn. The palace is open to public daily from 10am to 6pm and from 8.30am to 5.30pm on Sundays, and there is an entry fee of ₹5 per person for Indians and ₹100 per person for foreigners. Photography is allowed and there is no special fee for use of a camera.

Frazer Town

Fraser Town (sometimes corrupted as Frazer Town),[1] is a suburb of Bangalore Cantonment, in Bangalore North-East, spread over 4 km2. It was established in 1906 and is named after Stuart Mitford Fraser (1864-1963), who was the tutor and guardian of Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV, Maharaja of Mysore. Fraser Town was established to de-congest the growing Bangalore Civil and Military Station (otherwise known as the Bangalore Cantonment). The foundation of Fraser Town was laid in August 2010 by Mrs. F J Richards, with a commemorative plaque on the corner of Coles Road and Mosque Road [2]. Fraser Town is a residential and commercial suburb, the prominent roads being Promenade Road, Netaji Road, Madhavraya Mudaliar Road (M M Road), Haines Road, Spencer Road, Wheeler Road, Mosque Road, etc. The suburb is known for its communal harmony with Hindus, Muslims and Christians living side by side in peace. Before being known as Fraser Town, the suburb was called Mootocherry by the locals. In 1988, the BBMP renamed Fraser Town as Pulakeshinagar, after an ancient King which ruled the Deccan. However, the name has not caught on and continues to be popularly known as Fraser Town.

Koramangala

Koramangala is a locality in Bangalore, India. Situated in the south-eastern part of the city, it is one of the largest neighborhoods, and is a highly sought after residential locality with wide tree-lined boulevards and a mix of luxury apartments, commercial structures, and posh bungalows. Planned as a suburb post-independence, its location between Bangalore and Electronic City attracted migrants from across the country during Bangalore's tech boom of the late 1990s. Consequently, it has gradually developed into a commercial hub. Koramangala is largely cosmopolitan in nature. It is the focal point of many busy main roads, notably the Intermediate Ring Road (linking the Airport Road with Hosur Road and Electronics City), Sarjapur Road (leading to the Outer Ring Road, the IT corridor and beyond) and 80 Feet Road (leading to Viveknagar and MG Road at the center of Bangalore). It commands one of the highest property prices in the city and is considered by Bangaloreans to be one of the better places to live, although commercialization in the form of shopping centres, malls and restaurants, increasing traffic and population have posed problems for its residents. Koramangala is also home to many educational institutions like the St. John's Medical College, Christ University, Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Amity Global Business School, NuSkillz Academy, NuBrain Academy Jyoti Nivas College, Vemana Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, NMIMS, and TAPMI.

Dodda Ganeshana Gudi

Dodda Basavana Gudi is situated in Bull Temple Road, Basavanagudi, area of South Bangalore, part of the largest city of the Indian state of Karnataka. The Hindu temple is inside a park called Bugle Rock. The bull referred to is a sacred Hindu demi-god, known as Nandi; Nandi is a close devotee and attendant of Shiva. Dodda Basavana Gudi is said to be the biggest temple to Nandi in the world. The stone cult image of Nandi is continually covered with new layers of butter, benne in the local language of Kannada. There is a cult image of the elephant-headed Hindu deity son of shiva Ganesha close by. Every year on the last Monday and Tuesday of the Hindu month of Karthika Maasa a groundnut fair is held in the temple premises and groundnut is offered to the deity. This fair is known as Kadalekaayi Parishe in local tongue. Groundnut sellers and devotees throng the place during Kadalekaayi Parishe. Basavana Gudi is a regular place of visit for tourists and is covered by most of the tour operators including the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.

M. Chinnaswamy Stadium

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, is one of the cricket stadiums of India. Flanked by the picturesque Cubbon Park, Queens Road, Cubbon and uptown MG Road, this four decade old stadium is situated in the heart of the city of Bangalore. Formerly known as the Karnataka State Cricket Association stadium, the ground was later rechristened in tribute to Mr. M. Chinnaswamy, who had served the KSCA for four decades and was also president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 1977–1980. This stadium with a seating capacity of around 36,000 not only regularly hosts Test cricket, One Day Internationals and other First-class cricket matches, but also other musical and cultural events. The stadium is also the home ground of the Karnataka state cricket team and the Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. It is owned by the Government of Karnataka and has been leased out to the KSCA for a period of 99 years.

Bangalore Town Hall

Bangalore Town Hall is a neoclassical municipal building in Bangalore, India. The town hall is named after the philanthropist and former president of Bangalore city municipality, Sir K.P Puttanna Chetty. The foundation stone for the building was laid by the then Maharaja of Mysore, Krishna Rajendra Wodeyar, on March 6, 1933. The building was completed on September 11, 1935. It was inaugurated by crown prince Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar. Built by Sir Mirza Ismail, the building features a flight of steps leading to the entrance porch resting on Tuscan columns with identical columns extending on either sides. Financial assistance was provided by Kanteerava Wodeyar. Due to improper acoustics, a renovation was proposed estimated at Rs 1,000,000 in 1976. Postponements delayed renovations till March 1990, when the building was finally closed for renovation. The cost then was 6.5 million rupees (approximately US$371,400). The auditorium has two floors with a previous total capacity of 1,038 seats. The seating capacity has been reduced to 810 following the renovations.
