Dortmund Zoo

The Dortmund Zoo is the zoological garden of Dortmund, Germany. It is specialized in the keeping and breeding of South American species and is leading in the breeding of the giant anteater, the tamandua and the giant otter. The zoo is situated in the south of the city between the boroughs of Hacheney and Brünninghausen.

Zollern II/IV Colliery

Adler Apotheke

The Adler Apotheke, in Dortmund, is the oldest existing pharmacy in its original location in North Rhine-Westphalia. The pharmacy is located in a historic building at the Adler Alter Markt in the heart of downtown Dortmund . It is first documented in 1392 and was owned by the same family for over 500 years. In the cellar buildings of todays pharmacy is now a pharmacy museum. Here can be found almost 100 square metres of exhibition pieces including an equipment room, laboratory and store rooms. On request, guided tours are offered by the private museum.

Westfalenstadion

Westfalenstadion is an association football stadium in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is the home stadium of the Borussia Dortmund football team playing in the German Bundesliga. The stadium is officially named Signal Iduna Park [zɪɡˈnaːl ʔɪˈduːnaː ˈpaʁk] under a sponsorship arrangement lasting from December 2005 until 2021, giving naming rights to the Signal Iduna Group, an insurance company. The older name Westfalenstadion derives from the former Prussian province of Westphalia, which is part of the German federal state North Rhine-Westphalia. It is one of the most famous football stadiums in Europe and was elected best football stadium by The Times for its renowned atmosphere. It has a league capacity of 81,359 and an international capacity of 65,829 . It is Germany's biggest stadium and the seventh biggest stadium in Europe in terms of total capacity, as well as the third-largest stadium home to a top-flight European club in terms of total capacity (behind only Camp Nou and the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu). The stadium established the European record in average fan attendance in 2004-2005 with a total of 1.354 million fans. The stadium broke this record in the 2011-2012 season with almost 1.37 million spectators. Sales of annual season tickets amounts to 55,000 as of 2015. The Südtribüne is the largest extant terrace for standing spectators in European football; it is regularly full to its 24,454 capacity. Famous for the intense atmosphere it breeds, the south terrace has been nicknamed "Yellow Wall". The Borusseum, the museum of Borussia Dortmund, is located inside the stadium. The stadium hosted matches of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It also hosted the 2001 UEFA Cup Final. Various national friendlies and qualification matches for World and European tournaments have been played there as well as matches in European club competitions.

Opernhaus Dortmund is the opera house of Dortmund, Germany, which opened in 1966 and is formally operated by the Theater Dortmund organisation. This is the second opera house to exist in Dortmund, the first one having been built in 1904, but it was destroyed during World War I. The 1966 opera house was designed by architects Heinrich Rosskotten and Edgar Tritthart. The design separates the functions of the stage and technical areas in the Bühnenhaus , which is dominated by straight lines, from the auditorium under a thin-shell structure roof.

Husen Castle

Husen Castle is a medieval tower house of a castle in the Dortmund borough of Syburg in North Rhine-Westphalia. The origins of the site go back to the 13th century. The present shape of the tower house dates to the 17th century. It is included in the monument inden of the city of Dortmund as a listed building. The estate with its pastures and stands of trees that belongs to Syburg is about 7,000 m² in area and lies in the triangle formed by the cities of Dortmund, Schwerte and Hagen. The Verband Christlicher Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder of Westphalia Land took over the castle in 1984 and uses it as a youth holiday home with and youth campsite.

Steinwache

The Steinwache is a memorial museum in Dortmund, Germany. The police station Steinwache was established in 1906. Since 1928 a prison next to the station was in use for detention of suspects. In 1933 the Gestapo took over the prison and imprisoned and tortured many opponents of the Nazi regime. It soon had a reputation as Die Hölle von Westdeutschland . Between 1933 and 1945 more than 66,000 people were imprisoned in the Steinwache prison. In the early years of the regime the inmates were primarily members of the communist and social democratic opposition. During World War II foreign forced labourers made up the largest group of prisoners. Especially slave workers from eastern Europe were often badly treated and many of them were executed. In contrast to most of Dortmunds city center, the Steinwache wasnt heavily damaged during the war. The conversion of the former prison into a memorial site began in the 1980s. Since 1992 it is the permanent location of the exhibition Widerstand und Verfolgung in Dortmund 1933–1945, which demonstrates the persecution under National Socialism with many photographs, short texts and sometimes with reports from contemporary witnesses.

Museum Ostwall

The Museum Ostwall is a museum of modern and contemporary art in Dortmund, Germany. It was founded in the late 1940s, and has been located in the Dortmund U-Tower since 2010. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, objects and photographs from the 20th century, plus over 2,500 graphics, spanning Expressionism through classic modern art to the present day.

Botanischer Garten Rombergpark

The Botanischer Garten Rombergpark, or informally Rombergpark, is an extensive municipal arboretum and botanical garden located at Am Rombergpark 49b, Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With its total area of 65 hectares the Rombergpark is one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. It is open daily. The garden was established in 1822 as the Romberg familys English landscape park. In 1927-1929 it was acquired by the city and under city planning director Richard Nose enhanced by a small herb garden. The park and castle were badly damaged in World War II, but starting in 1950 director Gerd Krüssmann rebuilt it as an arboretum, adding some 4500 species to the park. In 1958 the parks greenhouses were built, and in 1985 a garden of medicinal plants was added. Today the garden contains a historic English landscape park with monuments; an arboretum containing thousands of species of woody plants, including some of the largest trees in North Rhine-Westphalia; a terrace with palm trees; and four greenhouses for cactus and succulents, ferns, tropical plants, and camellias, jasmine, and lemons.

Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte

The Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte or MKK is a municipal museum in Dortmund, Germany. It is currently located in an Art Deco building which was formerly the Dortmund Savings Bank. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, furniture and applied art, illustrating the cultural history of Dortmund from early times to the 20th century. There are regular temporary exhibitions of art and culture, as well as a permanent exhibition on the history of surveying, with rare geodetic instruments.

Mahnmal Bittermark

The Mahnmal Bittermark is a memorial place in Bittermark, a borough in the city of Dortmund, Germany. The place commemorates about 300 people killed by the Gestapo in Bittermark city forest and in the Rombergpark between March 7 and April 12, 1945. The people killed were forced laborers from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Yugoslavia, Poland and the Soviet Union, members of the German resistance, as well as ordinary people whose careless utterance was judged to be "the dissemination of the opinion about the futility of the war and the insult of Hitler". The bodies were exhumed on April 19-21, 1945, six days after the US army had taken Dortmund. In 1953 the city of Dortmund approved plans of constructing a memorial place for the victims. Works began in 1955 and were finished in 1960.

St. Reinold's Church

The Lutheran Protestant Church of St. Reinold is, according to its foundation date, the oldest extant church in Dortmund, Germany; it is dedicated to Reinold, also known as Renaud de Montauban, the patron of the city. The church was built as a palatine church in the Ottonian era. The present building is a late Romanesque church with a late gothic quire. St. Reinold's was built from 1250 to 1270, and is located in the centre of the city, directly at the crossing of the Hellweg and the historic road from Cologne to Bremen. St. Reinoldi's congregation is a member of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia, an umbrella comprising Lutheran, Reformed and united Protestant congregations. Efforts to complete the tower of St. Reinold's were renewed in 1443. After its completion in 1454, it was 112 m tall and was referred to as the "Miracle of Westphalia". The polygonal spire was renovated the first time in 1519. On 24 June 1520, the copper roofing was completed, and on 27 July the spire was added. The apex of the church was now about seven metres higher. In 1562 the pastors and congregations of Dortmund confirmed their adoption of Lutheranism in St. Reinold's Church. In 1661, the tower collapsed after being damaged during an earthquake. The foundation for the new tower was laid 1662, and the building was completed 1701, with a baroque ornament on the top. The church was heavily damaged in World War II. Since the reconstruction the tower now bears a hood with baroque features. These features supply a visual and harmonious connection between the original style of the church and its appearance after reconstruction. The tower of St. Reinold's Church (today's height: 104 m (341 ft)) can be visited, up to the first platform by the bell tower. On the inside there is a large set of bells, made by the "Bochumer Verein" foundry (total weight: 20 t), built in 1954 with altogether 6 steel bells. Their cost at the time of creation was DM 90,500. The heaviest bell weighing 6.500 kg, and measuring 2.50 m in diameter, is the largest cast steel bell in Westphalia.

Westfalenhallen

Westfalenhallen are three multi-purpose venues located in Dortmund, Germany. The original building was opened in 1925, but was destroyed during World War II. New halls were built, the Große Westfalenhalle opened in 1952. The capacity of the arena is 16,500. The Kleine Westfalenhalle served also for balls, exhibitions and concerts, such as the Dortmunder Philharmoniker, until the Opernhaus Dortmund was opened in 1966. The Bundesliga was founded at the Westfalenhallen in 1962.

The Syberg is a hill in the Ruhr, 244.63 m above sea level , which is part of the Ardey Hills. The Syberg is home to the Hohensyburg, the Vincke Tower, a monument to Emperor William I and other points of interest. The family name of the House of Syberg is derived from the Syberg.

Marienkirche

Marienkirche is a church in Dortmund, now in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, located in the inner city. Since the Reformation, it has been a Lutheran parish church of St. Marien. The church was destroyed in World War II, but rebuilt. It also serves as a concert venue for sacred music. The church was built on the Hellweg, opposite of the Reinoldikirche, for the town's council and jurisdiction. It shows elements of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, and houses notable Medieval art, such as the Marienaltar by Conrad von Soest and the Berswordtaltar.

Eissportzentrum Westfalenhallen

Eissportzentrum Westfalenhallen is an indoor sporting arena at the Strobelallee in Dortmund, Germany. It is primarily used for ice hockey and is the home arena of Eisadler Dortmund, and of the figure skating club ERC Westfalen. It was opened in 1952 and can accommodate 5,000 spectators, including 3,998 standing and 1,002 seats.

Magnet Museum

The Magnet Museum is a private museum in Dortmund-Aplerbeck, owned by the company Tridelta. The exhibition provides an overview of historical and current applications of the Permanent magnet in electrical engineering. In the museum, the use of permanent magnets in counters, speakers, telephones, switches, relays, clocks, measuring devices, small motors and generators are illuminated in the museum. One focus of the collection is the history of the magnet factory of Dortmund, which was established in the 1920s.

Borsigplatz

Borsigplatz is a borough in the urban district Innenstadt-Nord in Dortmund, Germany. It lies in the northern part of the city center, just outside the former city wall. It has a population of 11,141 . The eponymous square, which gives the borough its name, is famous for being the birthplace of football club Borussia Dortmund. The club was founded in 1909 by members of a catholic youth group in a bar situated right at the square. As the rest of Dortmunds northern city center, the borough has suffered from the fall of the coal and steel industry. The unemployment rate is high, since this part of the city was traditionally inhabited by industrial workers. 67.9 percent of the inhabitants have a migration background, which is the second highest number of the 62 statistical districts in Dortmund .

Hörde is a Stadtbezirk and also a Stadtteil in the south of the city of Dortmund, in Germany. Hörde is situated at 51°29' North, 7°30' East, and is at an elevation of 112 metres above mean sea level.It situated in southern part of Dortmund, a major town in the Ruhrgebiet. It is made up of the areas of Wellinghofen, Höchsten, Benninghofen, Loh, Holzen, Sommerberg, Syburg, and Wichlinghofen, as well as Hörde itself. The region was formerly a heavy industry area, particularly for the production and working of steel. The river Emscher flows through Hörde. It flows through the former "Phoenix" industrial park, which is currently being restored to a natural area. When finished, the Emscher will once again be a clean river, and there will be a lake .

Florianturm

The Florianturm is a telecommunications tower and landmark of Dortmund . It is named after St. Florian, the patron saint of gardeners. The Florianturm is the TV tower of Dortmund and was built in 1959 as an attraction for a federal horticultural show with a height of 219.6 metres . At the time it was briefly the highest freestanding structure in Germany. The tower was constructed similarly to a high concrete chimney. It consists of a reinforced concrete tube, which tapers off as it rises, reaching a height of 129.75 metres . At 130.6 metres there is a building part with two floors. On the lower floor there are operation rooms and on the upper floor at 137.54 metres there is a revolving restaurant. At 141.88 metres and 144.7 metres there are two observation decks. On the upper observation deck there are installations and aerials of Deutsche Telekom. Since 1959 it has been used for transmitting television signals. On 7 September 2004, a Russian helicopter was used to replace the aerial. Since then, a 50-kilowatt transmitter has transmitted digital terrestrial television programmes for the Dortmund area. Since 7 September 2004 the Florianturm has a height of 208.56 metres, making it the fourteenth highest structure in Germany. From 1996 to 1998 the tower was renovated and safety standards were brought up to date. In 2000 a catwalk for bungee jumping was opened on the upper platform. It was closed in 2003 after a fatal accident and has been uninstalled in July 2008.

Stadion Rote Erde is a 25,000 capacity football and athletics stadium in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia. It serves as the home stadium to Borussia Dortmund II and several athletic clubs. The stadium was built in between 1924 and 1926 at a cost of 1.8 million German Mark. The stadium was inaugurated in 1926, with a match between the City of Dortmund and FC Wacker München .

Altes Stadthaus

Altes Stadthaus in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, is an office block which was built in 1899, and was designed by "master builder" Friedrich Kullrich (a German architect, urban planner and construction officer from Berlin). It was built in the Renaissance Revival architecture style. After the office block was severely damaged in World War II, it was rebuilt in a simplified form. At the top of the gable is an eagle emblem, representing the city of Dortmund. The façades are made of Old or New Red Sandstone and the lateral parts have plastered surfaces. Kullrich said that the Stadthaus was in the shape of Altes Rathaus. The Stadthaus is a short distance from Alter Markt, which houses the Rathaus on the south. The Rathaus was restored shortly after the Stadthaus was built, under the direction of the Commissioner of City Planning, for the City of Imperial visit to Dortmund in 1899. A new hall was built in 2002 (the Berswordt Hall), at Peace Square in Dortmund. Directly opposite of Peace Square is the Rathaus (town hall). The Berswordt Hall includes citizen services, a café and a shop, and was named after the Berswordt, one of the oldest families in Dortmund, who were first mentioned in 1249. The Stadthaus is mainly used by the Dortmund city administration, and has been since it was built. The office block is listed on the Denkmalliste der Stadt Dortmund (Monument list of Dortmund), which contains 1,015 monuments, many of them being listed buildings.
