Turku Castle

Turku Castle is a medieval building in the city of Turku in Finland. Together with Turku Cathedral, the castle is one of the oldest buildings still in use in Finland. Turku Castle is the largest surviving medieval building in Finland. It was founded in the late 13th century and stands on the banks of the Aura River.

Sigyn

Sigyn, built in Göteborg 1887, now museum ship in Turku, is the last remaining wooden barque used for trade across the oceans. At the time she was built there were thousands of similar vessels, but she was one of the last ones built. She was quite small even for her time, considering she was built for long-distance trade, but well built and considered fast and beautiful.

Suomen Joutsen

Suomen Joutsen is a steel-hulled full rigged ship with three square rigged masts. Built in 1902 by Chantiers de Penhoët in St. Nazaire, France, as Laënnec, the ship served two French owners before she was sold to German interest in 1922 and renamed Oldenburg. In 1930, she was acquired by the Government of Finland, refitted to serve as a school ship for the Finnish Navy and given her current name. Suomen Joutsen made eight long international voyages before the Second World War and later served in various support and supply roles during the war. From 1961 on she served as a stationary seamens school for the Finnish Merchant Navy. In 1991, Suomen Joutsen was donated to the city of Turku and became a museum ship moored next to Forum Marinum.

Satava

Satava is a large island in the Archipelago Sea, off the coast of the city of Turku, Finland. The island is located between Hirvensalo and Kakskerta, and as with many Finnish islands, it has a large amount of summer residences. Satava is also a district of Turku, encompassing the island itself and some surrounding smaller islands, such as Kulho and Järvistensaari. The current population of the district is 781, and it is increasing at an annual rate of 2.22%. 18.43% of the population are under 15 years old, while 15.75% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 94.49% Finnish, 4.61% Swedish, and 0.90% other. Satava was annexed to Turku in 1968 as a part of Kakskerta municipality.

Finnish minelayer Keihässalmi

Keihässalmi was a minelayer of the Finnish Navy. She was commissioned in 1957 and remained in service until 1994, after which she was turned into a museum ship in Turku. The vessel was named after the strait of Keihässalmi, which is located in Sipoo. Keihässalmi was the first Finnish minelayer to be constructed after World War II. Keihässalmi was designed according to lessons learned from the Ruotsinsalmi class minelayers, but with increased size and tonnage. It was stronger, more seaworthy and faster than its predecessor. The construction took place from 1956 to 1957 at the Valmet Oy shipyard in Helsinki. The sinking of the minelayer Riilahti in 1943 had left a big gap in Finnish mine warfare capabilities, and a new vessel was needed. It would last until the mid-1950s before this was addressed, due to the harsh after-war conditions and war-payments which included a large number of ships to be constructed at Finnish shipyards. The Keihässalmi was fitted with almost all weapons systems available to the Finnish Navy , although she primarily was a minelayer and minesweeper. Keihässalmi was launched on 16 March 1957 and the vessel remained the largest vessel of the Finnish Navy until 1962, when the frigate Matti Kurki was purchased. It was also used as a sort of test-bed for multiple systems. At one point a 75 mm gun was fitted to the ship, as the Finnish Navy lacked designated gunships. The ship was also used for training, and was sent out on trips every sailing season. The Keihässalmi was cheap to operate and required a low complement (important as the Finnish Navy had a manpower restriction), but the vessel proved itself over the decades. The ship underwent repairs and refitting from 1975 until 1981, when its seaworthiness was improved by the installment of ballast tanks. The forward mine section was slightly modified to allow the vessel travel in high seas. The weaponry was modernized and the gunlaying was now radar-guided. Keihässalmi was the flagship of the Finnish Navy and she made many visits to other countries in the 1960s. She was the official school ship of the navy from 1975 until 1979, awaiting the replacement for the Matti Kurki. Keihässalmi was retired and turned into a museum ship in 1994. She is currently on display at the Forum Marinum museum in Turku.

Archangel Michael's church

Michael's Church is a church situated in central Turku. It's named after Archangel Michael and was finished in 1905. It dominates the western skyline of the city of Turku was designed by Professor Lars Sonck and is one of the most popular wedding churches in Turku being able to seat 1,800 people. When Sonck won the competition for the church in 1894, he was only a 23-year-old architectural student. Michael's Church is older than Michael's parish. The parish only dates back to 1921.

The Market Square is a city square in the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located in the citys VI District, and is generally considered the citys central square. It hosts a lively market on weekdays, and there are several cafés and restaurants on the square. The buildings around the Market Square are also part of the citys central business district. They include, for instance, the Hansa and Forum shopping centres, the Wiklund department store, an Orthodox church, a private medical clinic, and several instances of media such as an office of Finlands major newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, locally most significant newspaper Turun Sanomat and YLE.

Puutori

Puutori, Trätorget is a market square in the city centre of Turku, Finland. It measures at approximately 100x40m. It is bordered by Aninkaistenkatu/Aningaisgatan, Maariankatu/Mariegatan, Brahenkatu/Brahegatan and Sibeliuksenkatu/Sibeliusgatan. Today, it has no regular market square activity but Puutorin puolesta ry organises different events there each year. Located at one end of the square are Ystävyydenpuisto and Wäinö Aaltonens statue Kun ystävyyssuhteet solmitaan, which was designed in 1955 in honour of the friendship between Turku and Göteborg. There are also small cafés and shops surrounding Puutori, as well as a pet store.

Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art

Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art or WAM for short, is an art museum in central Turku, Finland dedicated especially to modern art. The museum is located on the east bank of the Aura River. The permanent exhibition is based on the art collection of City of Turku, which includes a large collection of works by Finnish artist and sculptor Wäinö Aaltonen. Temporary exhibitions focus on Finnish and international modern art.

Turku City Hall

Turku City Hall is a Neo-Renaissance building located on the bank of the Aura River in Turku, Finland. The City Council of Turku convenes at Turku City Hall. The Mayor used to work in an Art Nouveau building near to the City Hall, the Turku City Office until 2011. It was originally designed by Charles Bassi from 1810-1811 as the restaurant Seurahuone. The building survived the Great Fire of Turku in 1827. It was redone 1879-1883 as the city hall under plans by Frans A. Sjöström. The first floor used to have the register office of Turku up until 1975 and Turku district court until 1997. After the district court of Turku moved to the new Turku courthouse, the first floor was replaced by work, meeting and legislative spaces in 1999. The second floor of the building is decorated with gold and massive crystal crowning. The wing of the building, located on Aurakatu 4, is for city council groups' rooms and travel agency services. The public can enter the building during specific events such as Turku Day. The public is also permitted to witness the city council assembly.

Ruissalo

Ruissalo (Finnish; Runsala in Swedish) is an island in the Archipelago Sea and a district of the city of Turku, Finland. The island is located to the south-west of the city, between Hirvensalo and Pansio in the mainland. It is rather sparsely populated, having a population of only 126 (as of 2004), with an annual growth rate of 3.97%. The villas on the island are considered as culturally and historically valuable in Finland. Some are used as guesthouses, some are owned and governed by the foundations, labor unions, sports teams, and private enterprises on the area, some can be rented freely for some days for private party such as weddings, some have cafeterias in them. Private ownership exists, a couple villas even have renters with very selective occupancy. Some villas have deteriorated for the high maintenance costs due the historical building methods that must be used here. One of the largest old oak forests in Finland is situated in the island and many parts of it are included in nature conservation programs. In the westernmost part of the island there is a spa and a camping area. Turku golf course is situated also here. The Botanical garden of University of Turku is situated in the middle of the island. Near the southern tip of the western part of the island is a small, unofficial nude beach. Official nude beaches in Finland can only be found in Helsinki and in Pori. 15.08% of the district's population are under 15 years old, while 13.49% are over 65. The district's linguistic makeup is 88.89% Finnish, 8.73% Swedish, and 2.38% other. The island is probably most famous as the venue of the annual rock festival Ruisrock. Paavo Nurmi Marathon route goes through Ruissalo.

MS Bore

MS Bore is a combination museum and hotel ship docked permanently in Turku, Finland. She was originally built in 1960 by Oskarshamn shipyard, Oskarshamn, Sweden as the car/passenger ferry SS Bore for Steamship Company Bore, Finland, then the last commercial steam ship built in Scandinavia and the first ferry on the route between Finland and Sweden where cars could drive aboard. She was later known as SS Borea, before being rebuilt as cruise ship in 1988. 1988 to 2010 she was owned by the Finnish shipping company Kristina Cruises and known as MS Kristina Regina until she was retired due to being unable to fulfill new safety regulations.

Qwensel House

The Qwensel House is the oldest wooden house in Turku, Finland. It is bourgeois housing from the autarchic times that has survived in its entirety. The house was built approximately in the year 1700 in an area that was reserved for the nobility in the city plan made up by Peter Brahe in 1652. Today, the Qwensel House operates as the Turku Pharmacy Museum and café.

Luostarinmäki

Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum is an open-air museum in Turku, Finland. The museum consists of 18 blocks of original 18th-century – early 19th-century buildings on their original location. The area of the museum was the only old residential area left in 1940, when the museum was opened. The location was the largest area to completely survive the Great Fire of Turku. Contemporary handicraft items are presented. The museum received the Golden Apple international tourism award as the only site in Scandinavia in 1984.

Leningradin ja Turun ystävyyden patsas

The statue of friendship between Leningrad and Turku is a statue located in Puolalanpuisto park in Turku, Finland. It was erected 1967-1968 and revealed on May 19, 1969. The statue was erected in honour of the 15th town twinning anniversary between Turku and Leningrad . The statue depicts four figures, three men and a woman, greeting and embracing each other. Leningradin ja Turun ystävyyden patsas is made of bronze and stands 2.5 metres high. The base is made of red granite, mined from Vehmaa, and stands half a metre high.

Vartiovuori Observatory

Vartiovuori observatory is the former observatory of the Royal Academy of Turku. Building was completed 1819 and it was designed by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel. By its style, the neoclassical observatory is typical work of Engel and it has obvious similarities to Helsinki University Observatory and Pulkovo Observatory, which are as well Engels work. Building is located on top of the Vartiovuori hill, close to the cathedral and Aura river and its well visible from many places in city center. The observatory and several wooden houses on the hill were saved from the Great Fire of Turku 1827. Observatory is famous for a note made by German astronomer Friedrich Wilhelm Argelander who was working at 4 September 1827: Hic observationes terribili illo interceptae sunt incendio, quod totam fere urbeam ad ineres reduxit, observatorium vero, gratiae habeantur Deo O.M., salvum intactumque reliquit. or "Here the observations were stopped by a horrible fire which burn the whole city into ashes but, thanks to God, left the observatory intact". The Academy moved to Helsinki after the Fire and got a new observatory there few years later. Instruments were moved to Helsinki and finally Vartiovuori Observatory became defunct 1834. At 1836 Åbo Navigationsskola moved into empty observatory building and stayed there until 1967. Between 1986 and 1998 building was a maritime museum and during the repair of the Turku Art Museum 1999–2005, the changing exhibitions were placed in observatory. Currently and also in the picture, a flag of the foundation Stiftelsen för Åbo Akademi flies over the building.

Turku Concert Hall

Turku Concert Hall is located on the north side of the Puutori market square in Turku, Finland. The hall was designed by architect Risto-Veikko Luukkonen and constructed in 1952. It was the first concert hall in Finland. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra primarily performs at the concert hall but there are many top international venues that perform there as well. There is one auditorium in the building and it was designed for concerts. Its audience capacity is 1,002. The acoustics are excellent. In addition to concerts, conferences, plays, fairs and other events take place in the hall.

Old Great Square

The Old Great Square is a medieval market square located in the city centre of Turku, Finland. It is located in the II District in very close proximity to Turku Cathedral. The area was the administrative and commercial centre of Turku since the founding of the city in the 13th century up until the Great Fire of Turku. Today, there are buildings alongside the Old Great Square, only on the southern side because the blocks on the northern side changed to Porthaninpuisto after the fire. There are four historical buildings which the City of Turku restored for cultural use: the Brinkkala Mansion, Old Town Hall, Hjelt Mansion and Juselius Mansion. The buildings were mainly constructed after the fire and represent neoclassicism.

Medieval Market of Turku

The Medieval Market of Turku is an annual historical reenactment event organised in the historic city centre of Turku, Finland. In addition to living history performances, it includes an open-air handicrafts market with vendors and even visitors garbed in period costume. The main market is at the Old Great Square (one of the city's oldest market squares), but features other performances and exhibitions at Turku Castle, Turku Cathedral and the Town Market of the Hanseatic merchant, "Laurentius", at the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museum. These areas are closed to traffic during the event.

Paavo Nurmi Stadium

Paavo Nurmi Stadium is a multi-use stadium in Turku, Finland. It is currently used mostly for football matches and athletics meets. It holds 13,000 people and is named after the Turku-born runner Paavo Nurmi. Twenty athletics world records have been set at the stadium. John Landy broke the world records for the 1,500 m and the mile , Nurmi for the 3,000 m , Emil Zátopek and Ron Clarke for the 10,000 m, Viljo Heino for the one hour run and the 20 km , Matti Järvinen for the javelin throw and Charles Hoff for the pole vault .

Panimoravintola Koulu

Panimoravintola Koulu is a Finnish brewery restaurant in the city of Turku. Koulu is the largest brewery restaurant in Finland and it is situated in a former Neo-Renaissance style school building from 1889 by architects L. I. Lindqvist and Bruno Granholm. The school to first occupy the building was "Svenska Fruntimmerskolan i Åbo", which was later renamed as the "Svenska flickskolan i Åbo" in 1916, again in 1955 when it became "Åbo svenska flicklyseum", until finally in 1966 the name was changed to "Cygnaeus skola". On 4 February 1940, during the Winter War, the school was hit by a Soviet incendiary bomb, which set fire to the roof and destroyed the assembly hall (now known as the Bellman assembly hall). One of the high points in the history of Koulu was the visit of Commander-in-Chief, Baron Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim on 14 February in 1941. The restaurant's Bellman assembly hall and cabinets Cygnaeus and Wecksell on the second floor seat altogether 700 people at most and they can be reserved for conferences and private parties. Koulu's Winehouse, History class, Beerhouse, the summer kiosk outside and the brewery are on the first floor. The brewery has four regularly produced beers and one cider. On top of which, the brewery also produces several special or seasonal brews throughout the year. All the beers are made under the regulations of the German purity law, the Reinheitsgebot from 1516. It allows only the use of water, malted barley, hops and yeast.

The Turku Stockmann department store is the second largest department store in the Finnish region of Southwest Finland. The Turku Stockmann department store contains, in addition to Stockmann itself, an Alko store, a barbershop, a café, a kiosk, a buffet restaurant and the Academic Bookstore. The Turku Stockmann is located in connection to the Hansa shopping centre, on the avenue of Yliopistonkatu.

Veritas Stadion

Veritas Stadion is a football stadium in Turku, Finland. It is situated in the district of Kupittaa, in an area dedicated to sporting venues. The stadium serves as the home venue for FC Inter Turku playing in Finland's premier football league, the Veikkausliiga. The stadium is currently being expanded with a stand with 1,644 seats to meet the demands for the 2009 UEFA Women's Championship. The stadium is going to have a capacity of 9,372 spectators, with 8,072 seats and 1,300 standing places. In Veritas Stadion there are two stands opposite to each other. The old Olympic stand was built for the 1952 Summer Olympics and the new, modern main stand was ready in 2003. After that the name of the stadium was changed to Veritas Stadion, having formerly been known simply as the "Kupittaa football stadium" (Kupittaan jalkapallostadion). The old Kupittaa Stadium's record attendance was approximately 15,000 spectators for the 1987 UEFA Cup match between Turun Palloseura and Italian giants Internazionale. The Veritas Stadion's attendance record of 9,089 spectators was set at the 2009 local derby between Turun Palloseura and FC Inter.

Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova

Aboa Vetus and Ars Nova is a museum in central Turku, Finland. The museum is housed in a building known as the Rettig palace, originally built in 1928. Aboa Vetus displays portions of the city dating back to medieval times, while Ars Nova is a museum of contemporary art. The museum was first opened in 1995 as two independent museums. Originally, plans were for only Ars Nova, the contemporary art museum, but during its construction a number of structures and artifacts dating back to the Middle Ages were discovered, and the archaeological excavation that was commissioned eventually transformed into Aboa Vetus. The two museums were combined in 2004 and Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova is now among the most popular tourist venues in the entire region of Southwest Finland.

Betel Church

Betel Church is located in the VII District of Turku, Finland. It is a church of the Turku adventism parish. The jugend-style church was completed in 1906 under the plans of Frithiof Strandell. It was later renovated under the plans of Erik Bryggman in 1927 and has a functional bell tower, among others. The church is actually quite hidden from pedestrians. In recent years, there have been suggestions to open up a walkway from Yliopistonkatu to Puutarhakatu for pedestrians and allow them to better admire the church. The Betel Church is listed amongst the most noted buildings of the culture environment in Finland. In addition to regular services, the church has the vegetarian restaurant KASVIS-ravintola, serving a lunch buffet. The restaurant uses organic and locally grown produce and also has vegan options.

Kakskerta Church

Kakskerta Church is located in Turku, Finland on the island Kakskerta. The seaside church is one of the three churches in the Turku Martin parish union. According to legend, the local fishermen got a surprise from the sea with a huge catch of delicious fish. They believed that the area was blessed, and the residents of the island decided to build their own church. Kakskerta Church was built in 1765-1769, and dedicated in 1770. It was designed by Christian Schroder, and is oblong in shape. The altarpiece is from the 17th century, and nearly the whole interior of the church was renovated in 1940 under plans by architect Erik Bryggman. The belfry was designed by C. Bassi in 1824.

Martin's Church

Martin's Church in Turku, Finland is the main church of Martin's parish, founded in 1921. The church was consecrated on the 450th anniversary of the birth of Martin Luther, on November 12, 1933. he designers of the church were the architects Totti Sora and Gunnar Wahlroos. The church represents architectural functionalism. Martin's church is a long church with three aisles with very narrow side aisles. The church has a functional and singular practicality of its own. The barrel-vaulting of the roof is one of the most outstanding features of the church. The altar, the pulpit, and the roof are notable features of architect Sora's work. On the top of the pulpit, the architect has placed a crown. The same theme is featured as a decoration to the hymn list table. The architects have clearly thought of the church as a royal court chamber and for this reason the basic construction is reminiscent of a basilica. The artist Aarre Aaltonen has made five decorative sculptures for the pulpit.

St. Catherine's Church

St. Catherine's Church is located in Nummi, a suburb of Turku, Finland, in the same district as Turku Student Village. It represents old medieval stone church building tradition. Although it was once completely destroyed and has undergone several renovations, it has preserved something of its original appearance and retains the basic plan of a medieval Finnish church. The construction was begun in the 1340s, the sacristy being completed first and the church later. Bishop Hemming and Bishop Thomas of Växjö consecrated the church on 22 January 1351. The church was named after its patron saint Catherine of Alexandria in 1991. It previously was located in the region of Kaarina and was known was Kaarina Church. The first mention of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was in a signet with which vicar Jacob of Nummi confirmed the then episcopal election. Nummi, which surrounded the church, however became a part of Turku in 1939. Later, when Kaarina became its own parish, the church changed its name to St. Catherine's Church.

Collections can be:
- Public (Anyone can add attractions to your collection)
- Shared (Only yourself and Gurus you nominate can add content)
- Private (The collection will only be visible to yourself)

Showcase local attractions that you endorse
Clubs
Showcase attractions that members have created (eg. local historical society)
Special Interest
If GuRoute does not have a category for your special interest you add your attractions to your own collection instead
