Top Attractions in Chernivtsi Oblast

Khotyn

Khotyn is a city in Chernivtsi Oblast of western Ukraine, and is the administrative center of Khotyn Raion within the oblast, and is located south-west of Kamianets-Podilskyi. According to the 2001 Ukrainian census, it has a population of 11,124. Khotyn, first chronicled in 1001, is located on the right bank of the Dniester River, and is part of the historical region Bessarabia. Important architectural landmarks within the city include the Khotyn Fortress, constructed in the 13-15th centuries (new fortress started in 1325, major improvements in the 1380s and 1460s), and two 15th century constructions by Moldavia's ruler Stephen the Great: the Prince's Palace (Palatul Domnesc) and the city's clock tower. Historically, the town was part of the Principality of Moldavia (1359-1432, 1459-1538, 1541-1562, 1572-1615, 1621-1673, 1699-1712), the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1432-1459, 1538-1541, 1562-1572, 1615-1620, 1673-1699) and the Ottoman Empire (1711-1812) [1]. Subsequently, it was part of the Bessarabia Governorate of the Russian Empire (1812–1917), Moldavian Democratic Republic (1917–1918), Romania (1918–1940, 1941–1944), the USSR (1940–1941, 1944–1991) and Ukraine (1991 - ).

Cheremosh River

The Cheremosh River is a river in western Ukraine, tributary of the Prut River. It flows along the borderline of the historic regions of Bukovina and Galicia. In the Middle Ages and the early modern era, it was part of the borderline between the Principality of Moldavia and Kingdom of Poland. Currently it runs along the borderline between the Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi Oblasts. Both banks in the upper part of the river are inhabited by Hutsuls. The two upper streams of this river are called Bilyi Cheremosh and Chornyi Cheremosh . Chornyi Cheremosh is 87 km long with a basin of 856 sq km and Bilyi Cheremosh is 61 km long with the basinof 606 sq km. The river starts in the Carpathian Mountains and flows roughly SW to NE. It leaves the Bukovina Obchinas to the rivers right, and the historic subregion of Pokuttya to the rivers left side.

Transfiguration Cathedral

The Transfiguration Cathedral in Chernihiv is the oldest building in Chernihiv, Ukraine, and one of the few survived buildings of pre-Mongol Rus. In 1989, together with the Historical center of Chernihiv, the cathedral has been on the World Heritage tentative list. Construction of the cathedral was started by Prince Mstislav of Chernigov, and the legend says that when Mstislav died in 1035 or 1036, the height of the walls was equal to the height of a horseman. It is unclear when the construction was completed. Mstitlav was buried in the cathedral. The Transfiguration Cathedral was damaged in 1239, during the Mongol invasion, renovated in the middle of the 17th century, burned down in the 18th century and was again renovated. The current exterior stems from the end of the 19th century. The architecture of the cathedral is unusual and is a mix of a Roman basilica with a typical Byzantine church. It has three naves with three apses and five domes. There are two towers at the two sides of the main facade.

Black Grave

The Black Grave is the largest burial mound in Chernihiv, Ukraine. It is part of the National Sanctuary of Ancient Chernihiv and is an Archaeological Monument of national importance. Comparable to the barrows of Gnyozdovo near Smolensk, the Black Grave has a height of over 10 metres and a circumference of 170 metres. During excavations undertaken in 1872–73, Dmitry Samokvasov uncovered two cremated bodies of Norse warriors (probably father and son), surrounded by slaves, sacrificial animals, arms, armour, and decorations. Samokvasov dated the burial to the late 10th century, when Vladimir I was the ruler of Kievan Rus. It is likely that the buried warriors were two princes (knyazes) of Chernihiv, although no local potentate is attested in the Slavonic chronicles before Vladimir's son, Mstislav of Chernihiv. After the bodies were cremated, they were put upon a 7-metre-high mound, where a funeral feast took place. Arranged near the bodies were two helmets and knee-length chain mail (hauberks), probably extracted from the pyre, as well as a cauldron with ram bones, two sacerdotal knives, two golden Byzantine coins, an imported sabre, a miniature dark-red bronze idol of Thor, and two silver-bound aurochs horns decorated with floral motifs, fabulous animals, and figures of a man and a woman shooting at a bird. When the barrow was completed, a stele was placed at the top. All these items are now displayed at the State Historical Museum in Moscow. At the present time the site of the burial mound along with other 34 buildings (mostly churches) are included in the Chernihiv National Architecture-Historical Sanctuary "Ancient Chernihiv". The Black Grave along with the rest of the reserve is the major tourist attraction in the Chernihiv Oblast (province) of Ukraine.

Chernihiv Stadium

Olympic sports training center "Chernihiv" (formerly Stadion of Yuri Gagarin) (Ukrainian: Олімпійський навчально-спортивний центр «Чернігів») is a multi-purpose stadium in Chernihiv, Ukraine. The stadium was given status of Olympic preparation and brought under the administration of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. It is currently used mostly for football matches, and is the home of Ukraine national football team (women) and FC Desna Chernihiv. The stadium holds 12,060 spectators. The stadium was built in 1936 for 3,000 spectators in place of a city park (garden) that existed since 1804. During the World War II the Chernihiv Stadium was heavily damaged and in 1950s was completely reconstructed, included stadium walls and two stands for 11,000 spectators. In 1961 it was named after the Russian Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. On May 25, 1964 Gagarin in person attended the stadium. In mid 1980s the stadium capacity was increased to 14,000. In October 2011 the stadium received almost five million hryvnias for renovations. Beside its main arena, the football field, the center houses four sports schools and several sports sections. There are a boxing hall, a running track, a fitness room (weightlifting/gymnastics), a massage room, an electronic scoreboard, a controlled-access entrance. The field has a water sprinkle system and floodlights. The center conducts competitions in athletics (track and field), football, boxing, and weightlifting. There is a prospective project on reconstructing the center into a sports city "Luchisty" (Radiant) which beside the football stadium (3,000 seats) would include an ice arena (4,000 seats), a fitness-recreational complex (swimming pool, indoor field, and numbers of other sports halls), and a beach club (including a beach stadium, open air fitness rooms and swimming pools, and sauna). The sports complex also would include a hotel complex with 175 rooms.

Kachanivka

Kachanivka Palace is located near the village of Petrushivka located in Ichnia Raion, Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine. The palace was the property of Pyotr Rumyantsev, Catherine II's viceroy of Little Russia. The former Rumyantsev estate stands on the bank of the Smosh River in Chernihiv Oblast of Ukraine. Other Rumyantsev estates in the region are better known as the Gomel Residence. The Neoclassical residence was erected in the 1770s to designs by Karl Blank. The church, orangery, aviary, water tower and several other buildings date from the 19th century. After Nikolay Rumyantsev's death, the property passed to the Tarnovsky family. Vasily Tarnovsky was interested in the history of Ukraine and amassed a collection of weapons that had been owned by the hetmans of Ukraine. Among the 19th-century visitors to Kachanovka were Nikolai Gogol, Taras Shevchenko, Ilya Repin, Mikhail Vrubel, and Mikhail Glinka (who worked on his opera A Life for the Tsar in the summerhouse). Although the Soviets nationalized the palace for use as a penal colony and tuberculosis hospital, the manor, including the extensive English park and several subsidiary outbuildings, is exceptionally well preserved and has been designated a national cultural preserve since 1982.

Chernivtsi

Chernivtsi is a city in western Ukraine, situated on the upper course of the River Prut. Chernivtsi is the administrative center of Chernivtsi Oblast – the northern, Ukrainian part of the historical Moldavian region of Bukovina. At the time of the 2001 Ukrainian Census, the population of the city was 240,600. Together with the city of Lviv, Chernivtsi is viewed at present to be a cultural center of western Ukraine. The city is also considered one of modern Ukraine's greatest cultural, educational and architectural centers. Historically a cosmopolitan cultural center, Chernivtsi was even dubbed "Little Vienna" and "Jerusalem upon the Prut". Chernivtsi is currently twinned with seven other cities around the world. The city is a major regional rail and road transportation hub, also housing an international airport.
