Kowdiar

Kowdiar is one of the main localities in the city of Trivandrum, Kerala, India. It is the starting point of the Rajapatha that stretches till the East Fort. It lies between the localities of Vellayambalam and Peroorkada- a suburb in the vicinity. Kowdiar is famous for the Kowdiar Palace. Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district is a municipal Town 20 km south of the kerala State capital Trivandrum on the National Highway 47 to Kanyakumari. Kowdiar Palace

Kowdiar Palace in Trivandrum, Kerala, India was built in 1934 by Maharajah Sree Chithira Thirunal, on the occasion of the Pallikettu of his only sister, Maharani Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi with Lt. Col. G. V. Raja. After the Constitutional Amendment of 1971, the properties and estates of the royal family were partitioned and divided equally among the branches of the two Travancore Queens, Sethu Lakshmi Bayi and Sethu Parvathi Bayi. This Palace belongs to the heirs of Sethu Parvathi Bayi as it was built by her son Maharajah Sree Chithira Thirunal. Kowdiar Palace's architectural work is famous and has over 150 rooms. Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Padmanabhaswamy temple is located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India . The temple is built in Dravidian style of architecture associated with the temples located in the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, featuring high walls and a 16th-century Gopuram. While the Moolasthanam of the temple is the Ananthapuram Temple in Kasargod, architecturally to some extent, the temple is a replica of the Adikesava Perumal temple located in Kanyakumari District. It is the richest Hindu temple in the world. In fact, in terms of precious metals and precious stones, it is by far the wealthiest institution and place of worship of any kind in the recorded history of the world. St. Joseph's Cathedral, Trivandrum

St. Josephs Metropolitan Cathedral, also known as Palayam Palli is the Roman Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Trivandrum. The first church was built here in 1873. The church was entended in the manner of a cross in 1912. The final stage of extension, including the Gothic style facade and the bell-tower was completed in 1927. The three bells were brought from Belgium and were named Joseph, Xavier, and Aloysius in honour of St. Joseph, the Patron of the Church, St. Francis Xavier, the Apostle of India and Bishop Aloysius Maria Benziger the pioneer Missionary-Bishop of Quilon respectively. Upon the bifurcation of the Diocese of Quilon, the new diocese of Trivandrum was formed on 1 July 1937, and St. Joseph’s Church became the cathedral of the newly formed diocese. When the diocese was raised to a metropolitan archdioese in 2004, the cathedral became a metropolitan cathedral. The cathedral has a statue of its patron St. Joseph with the child Jesus in the middle of the facade and a statue of Jesus with hands raised atop the tower. The church which is white in colour was painted red from 1927 to 2010. It was renovated during the period 2008 to 2010.

Koyikkal Palace

8°36′31.55″N 77°0′11.37″E The Koyikkal Palace is a palace situated in Nedumangadu, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kerala in South India. The palace was built in 16th centuray for Umayamma Rani of the Venad Royal Family. Umayamma Rani was the regent of Venad between 1677 and 1684. The palace is a double storeyed building and built with traditional architectural style of Kerala. The palace is maintained by the Archaeological Department of Kerala. There is a Folklore Museum and a Numismatics Museum are working in this palace. The exhibits in the museum contains rare instruments like Chandravalam, a small percussion instrument used in Ramakathappattu and Nanthuni, a small musical instrument made of wood and string used in Onappattu etc.

Varkala

Varkala is a coastal town and municipality in Thiruvananthapuram district situated in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the suburban town of Thiruvananthapuram . It is located 50 kilometres north-west of Thiruvananthapuram and 37 km south-west of Kollam city. Varkala is the only place in southern Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These Cenozoic sedimentary formation cliffs are a unique geological feature on the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and is known among geologists as Varkala Formation and a geological monument as declared by the Geological Survey of India. There are numerous water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs. Varkala is also famous for the 2,000-year-old Janardana Swami Temple which is an important Vaishnavaite shrine in India and is often referred to as Dakshin Kashi . The temple is located close to the Papanasam beach, which is considered to have holy waters which wash away sins, and is also an important Ayurveda treatment centre. The temple has an ancient bell removed from a shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel which sank near Varkala without causing any casualties. Another major landmark in Varkala is the Sivagiri Mutt, established by the social reformer Sree Narayana Guru. The hill-top mausoleum of Sree Narayana Guru is one of the most famous monuments in Kerala.

Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple

Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple or Old Sreekanteswaram Temple, located at Puthenchantha in Thiruvananthapuram, is one of the ancient Shiva temples in Kerala. According to the renowned historian Elamkulam Kunjan Pillai, this temple existed even in the 9 th century AD. This temple is the original abode of the Lord of new Sreekanteswaram Mahadeva Temple. The new temple is situated just outside the "North Fort" in Thiruvananthapuram. As noted by Dr. M. G. Sasibhooshan, the old temple was on the route taken by the King of Travancore and his retinue in connection with the Pallivetta of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The old temple might have lost its importance to the new one in the latter half of the 18th century when Chettikulangara was used by the mercenaries of Thampi siblings, the sworn enemies of Sri Vira Bala Marthanda Varma.

Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve

The Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve was Established in 2001 and includes 3,500.36 km2 of which 1828 km² is in Kerala and 1672.36 km² is in Tamil Nadu. The Western Ghats, Agasthyamalai Sub-Cluster, including all of Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. Agasthyamala is located in this biosphere area.

St. Mary's Cathedral, Pattom, Trivandrum

St. Marys Malankara Syrian Catholic Cathedral, Pattom, Trivandrum is the central place of worship of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. It is the See of the Major Archbishop-Catholicos of Trivandrum. The tombs of the Servant of God Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Ivanios, Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios and of Major Archbishop Cyril Baselios Catholicos are there. The foundation stone of this Cathedral was laid by Archbishop Mar Ivanios in 1950, and the Cathedral was consecrated by Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios on February 22, 1965. Pope John Paul II visited the Cathedral on February 8, 1986. The Cathedral was renovated in 2008. The blessing of the renovated Cathedral was on November 8, 2008. There were 531 families in the parish community.

Pattom is a part of the Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala. It is located approximately 4 kilometres north of centre of Thiruvananthapuram. Pattom is largely a residential area, houses few important administration offices of Keral State besides few shopping complexes. The Traffic Police and Telecommunication department, Kerala Science, Technology and Environment Head Office (Sasthra Bhavan)are also located in Pattom.

Pettah Market

The Pettah Market is an open market in the suburb of Pettah in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The entrance to the Pettah Market is marked formally by a tall monument in the centre of a roundabout, known as the Khan Clock Tower which was built by the family of Framjee Bhickajee Khan, an eminent Parsi family from Bombay who used to have substantial business interests in the country and who also owned the Colombo Oil Mills. The Colombo Old Town Hall Museum, which was built by the prominent Muslim Arasi Marikar Wapchie Marikar, is located at Kaymans Gate, so named because the Dutch used to stock crocodiles at Beira Lake to prevent their slaves from escaping. Today the building acts as a post office on the ground floor, and as a museum on the upper floor. Outside, there is an exhibit of old steam engines. Most of the businesses in Pettah are dominated by Muslim traders who specialize in gold and jewelry shops. The most recognizable building in the Pettah market is the candy-striped Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque which was built in 1909.

Parnasala of Santhigiri

Parnasala is a monument in the shape of a full bloomed lotus in pure white marble, located at Santhigiri Ashram, 21 km from Keralas capital Thiruvananthapuram. The monument serves as the final resting place for the body of Navajyothisree Karunakara Guru, the founder of Santhigiri Ashram. The Parnasala, which rises to a height of 91 ft., was dedicated to humanity by the President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, on August 13, 2010. It was opened for public worship on September 12, 2010. As the Guru espoused an inclusive, experiential spiritual path which transcends religious and ethnic divides, the Parnasala is open to all people for prayers and contemplation. A cynosure for spiritual aspirants and tourists, the monument daily attracts hundreds of visitors.

Thirichittoor Rock

Thirichittoor Rock is a large rock located three kilometres north of Nedumangad. It is written in the Ramayana that Hanuman returned the rock after Sethubandan. "Thirichitta" in the Malayalam language means return or turn. The rock is a tourist spot, and those who climb it can enjoy views of the town of Nedumangad and the city of Trivandrum, and visit two temples which have been built on top of the rock. The temples are dedicated to Hanuman Siva and Vishnu.

Vellayani Devi Temple

The Vellayani Devi Temple is a highly revered shrine in Kerala, India. The shrine is situated in Vellayani 1.5 km west of Vellayani junction, 12 km southeast of Thiruvananthapuram on the eastern bank of Vellayani Lake. The temple is under the management of Travancore Devaswom Board. The temple structure has a bronze roof with traditional art work and carries Dravidian architecture. The roof of sanctum sanctorum is formed with 36 no.s of rafters carved in 12 wooden pieces of 30 Degree each representing 12 Rasis which multiplied by 3, no. representing Trimurtis gives a no. equal to 108 which is the no. of peethas of Adi Parashakti.It is also believed that the Kollam Era started with the renovation of the temple.

St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica

The St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica, located in the Palayam/Cantonment area of the city of Thiruvananthapuram, in the state of Kerala, India, is the first Syro-Malankara Catholic Church to be elevated to the rank of a Catholic basilica. It is the fourth basilica in Kerala. On November 10. 2008, at the St. Marys Cathedral, Pattom, Trivandrum, Leonardo Sandri, Papal representative and Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, announced the designation of the Queen of Peace Pro-Cathedral in Thiruvananthapuram as a basilica. Major Archbishop Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos dedicated the church as the St. Mary, Queen of Peace Basilica on December 7, 2008. Kerala Minister M. Vijayakumar presided over a meeting that followed.

Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary in the southern state of Kerala in India is spread over the southeast corner of the Western Ghats, and covers a total area of 128 km2 . It is located between 77° 8’ to 77° 17’ East Longitude and 8° 29’ to 8° 37’ North Latitude, central location 8°33′N 77°12.5′E. University of Kerala

The University of Kerala , formerly the University of Travancore, is an affiliating university located in Trivandrum in the south Indian state of Kerala, India.
