Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo

The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo are a group of monolithic churches, chapels and monasteries hewn out of solid rock and completely different from other monastery complexes in Bulgaria, located near the village of Ivanovo, 20 km south of Rousse, on the high rocky banks of the Rusenski Lom, 32 m above the river. The complex is noted for its beautiful and well-preserved medieval frescoes. The caves in the region had been inhabited by monks from the 1220s, when it was founded by the future Patriarch of Bulgaria Joachim, to the 17th century, where they hewed cells, churches and chapels out of solid rock. At the peak of the monastery complex, the number of churches was about 40, while the other premises were around 300, most of which are not preserved today. Second Bulgarian Empire rulers such as Ivan Alexander and Ivan Asen II frequently made donations to the complex, as evidenced by donor portraits in some of the churches. Other patrons included nobles from the capital Tarnovo and nearest big medieval town Cherven, with which the monastery complex had strong ties in the 13-th and 14-th century. It was a centre of hesychasm in the Bulgarian lands in the 14th century and continued to exist in the early centuries of the Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, but gradually decayed. The monastery complex owes much of its fame to 13th- and 14th-century frescoes, preserved in 5 of the churches, which are thought of as wonderful examples of Bulgarian mediaeval art. The rock premises used by the monks include the St Archangel Michael Chapel the Baptistery, the Gospodev Dol Chapel, the St Theodore Church and the main Church, with the 14th-century murals in the latter one being arguably the most famous of all in Ivanovo and noted as some of the most representative examples of Palaeologan art. Many century-old inscriptions have also been preserved in the monastical premises, including the famous indented inscription of the monk Ivo Gramatik from 1308–1309. The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.

Dohodno Zdanie

Dohodno Zdanie is an imposing Neoclassical edifice on Freedom Square in the city centre of Rousse, Bulgaria, built in 1898–1902 to accommodate the local theatre performances. The name originates from the constructions purpose: to provide the school board of trustees with funds by means of the theatre hall, library, casino and shop rents. Today, Dohodno Zdanie is a cultural monument and one of the symbols of Rousse. A six-member city commission accepted the requirements that the project for the building should be completed in 1896. Those included no less than nine shops, two storeys, a 200 square metre casino, a 300 square metre theatre hall and a 200 square metre library hall. An authoritative jury discussed 15 projects that participated in a contest for the construction of the building, and chose the Voilà une idée project by Austrian architect Peter Paul Brang on 20 February 1897. An auction on 26 January 1898 determined the construction contractors, Gatyu Tsonev and Petar Atanasov. The construction manager on behalf of the Rousse municipality was Georg Lang, while on behalf of the contractors the manager was Frank Scholz. The construction of the building met severe financial problems due to the increase of the initial costs of 350,000 leva, the school board of trustees was forced to borrow an initial 200,000 and then a further 50,000 from the Stremlenie company, mortgaging its own property, and then conclude another loan agreement with Girdap Bank for 600,000 leva. The municipality mortgaged its cattle butchering receipts and the school board of trustees— its shops and Dohodno Zdanie itself. The sculptures symbolizing agriculture and war, designed by the initial architect Raul-Paul Brank, were not approved due to being seemingly too German in appearance, and were remodelled and made more Bulgarian by T. Petkov. The theatre hall project was created by arts teacher Truniček and Joran Romeo, a decorating specialist who had also worked with the Romanian National Theatre Bucharest. Due to the lack of funds to finalize the construction, the school board of trustees had to loan the middle part of Dohodno Zdanie, the theatre hall and the coffeehouse, before the building was actually completed. Three auctions were organized between July 1899 and March 1900, but no candidates were found. The building was deemed finished in 1900, but the theatre hall was incomplete. The first theatre performance took place in the casino hall in 1901, until the scene and theatre hall were ultimately completed in 1902. The scene was expanded in 1921, and an additional storey of it was built in 1924. It was considerably repaired in 1933–1934. The restoration of the entire building began in 1970 and lasted until 15 December 2006.

Rousse Regional Historical Museum

The Rousse Regional Historical Museum is one of the 11 regional museums of Bulgaria. It acts within the Rousse, Razgrad, and Silistra regions. The museum occuipies the building of the former Battenberg Palace, previously a local court, built 1879–1882 by Friedrich Grünanger. The Rousse Regional Historical Museum was established in 1904. Its basis are the archeological collections of Karel and Hermenguild Shkorpil, as well as of the naturalist Vasil Kovachev, which were gathered in the "Knyaz Boris" mens high school of Rousse. The museum holds approximately 140,000 items, including: prehistoric pottery and idol plastic arts the Borovo Treasure of the 4th century BC the finds of excavations of the antique Danube castles Yatrus and Sexaginta Prista, and of the medieval Bulgarian city Cherven a collection of medieval frescoes a collection of exhibits of traditional lifestyle a collection of urban clothing, china, glass, and silver from the end of the 19th — beginning of the 20th century personal belongings of notable figures from the struggle for national liberation a numismatic collection a collection of bones from prehistoric mammals, including a unique lower jaw of a Mammuthus rumanus a bronze helmet from 4th–3rd century BC, suggestedly belonging to one of the soldiers of Alexander the Great. The helmet was contributed in August 2006 by the Bobokovi brothers, major shareholders of the Prista Oil company. The time and place where the helmet was found was not publicly revealed. The museum features seven full-time exhibitions, three of them being open-air: the Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo the Medieval city of Cherven the Roman castle of Sexaginta Prista

Rousse State Opera

The Rousse State Opera is an opera company which was founded in 1949. It took over the Rousse Opera Society which had been created in 1914. The new company is one of the oldest state cultural institutions in Bulgaria. With a staff of schooled singers, a choir, the ballet, and the orchestra, there is maturity and the ability to perform a wide range of works. The companys repertoire ranges from the classics and has included 195 different works for the stage, some of them having received their Bulgarian premieres at the Ruse. Over the years numerous famous singers have sung on the Ruse opera stage: Elena Nikolai, Todor Mazarov, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Raina Kabaivanska, Nicola Giuselev, Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Ghena Dimitrova, Stefka Evstatieva, Orlin Anastassov, Valerie Popova, Gloria Lind, Alexandrina Milcheva, Vladimir Atlantov, Stefan Dimitrov, Ivan Konsulov, Ava Cooper, Peter Glossop, Zinaida Pali, Silvia Shash, Kaludi Kaludov, Mariana Zvetkova, Nicolae Herlia and many others. Since 1956, the company has toured in Romania and Italy, Spain, Holland, France, Ukraine, Greece, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Cyprus and Rhodes islands. Rousse Opera Theatre has also recorded a number of performances for Bulgarian Radio and for separate CD compilations.

Kaliopa House

The Kaliopa House, a popular name for the Bulgarian "Urban lifestyle of Rousse" museum, was built in 1864. According to a legend, the house was bestowed upon the beautiful Kaliopa, the wife of the Prussian consul Kalish, by the governor of the Danubian Vilayet, Midhat Pasha, who was in love with her. The facades design resembles the style of houses in Plovdiv. The frescoes at the upper floor were crafted in 1896. The exposition represents the role of Rousse as a gateway towards Europe, and the influx of European urban culture into Bulgaria at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Sample interior layouts are shown, of a drawing-room, a living-room, a music hall and a bedroom, with furniture from Vienna, as well as collections of urban clothing, of jewelry and other accessories, of silverware and china, which mark the changes present in the daily life of Rousse citizens. Pantheon of National Revival Heroes

The Pantheon of National Revival Heroes is a Bulgarian national monument and an ossuary, located in the city of Rousse. The remains of 39 famous Bulgarians are interred there, including: Lyuben Karavelov, Zahari Stoyanov, Stefan Karadzha, Panayot Hitov, Tonka Obretenova, Nikola Obretenov, Panayot Volov, Angel Kanchev, and others; 453 other participants in Botevs detachment, the Chervena Voda detachment, in the April uprising, and other revolutionaries have been honored by inscription of their names in the interior. An eternal fire burns in the middle under the gold-plated dome. The Pantheon is one of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. In order to build the Pantheon in 1977, the "All Saints" church in the old Rousse cemetery was demolished. The new building was opened to visitors on 28 February 1978. After a public discussion in 2001, the Patheon was "Christianised" by placing a cross on top of its dome. The "St Paisius of Hilendar" chapel, as well as a museum exposition, were founded at that time.

Rousse TV Tower

The Rousse TV Tower is a 204-metre-high TV tower built of reinforced concrete at Rousse, Bulgaria. Originally, the structure was constructed as a 206-metre-high TV tower with a cafe/restaurant on top and was the tallest one on the Balkan peninsula until 2001. In the 1990s an additional antenna was added bringing the height to 210 metres. And, in March 2007, the antenna was reconstructed bringing its height to 204 metres. The Rousse TV Tower was built on the Leventa Hill, in 1986 and was launched on 7 May 1987 . Authors of the project were Stilyan Titkov, Evlogi Tsvetkov, Ivan Yantahtov and V. Vasilev. The newly built tower started broadcasting both Bulgarian Television and Soviet Television, as well as the three stations of Bulgarian National Radio — Horizon, Hristo Botev, and Orpheus . Higher frequencies were coming into use during the following years, and the process of shutting down old transmitters was completed on 15 Aug 2004. The tower has an observation deck open for tourists at a height of 107 metres, which offers a panoramic view of Rousse, the Danube river, the neighbouring city of Giurgiu, Romania, and as far as the Carpathian Mountains.

Dve Mogili

Dve Mogili is a town in northeastern Bulgaria, part of Ruse Province. It is the administrative centre of Dve Mogili Municipality, which lies in the western part of the area. Dve Mogili is located 32 kilometres away from the provincial capital of Ruse. As of December 2009, the town has a population of 4,342 inhabitants. The town's name means "two hills" and is derived from the geographic features of the surrounding area, namely the two hills near the town. Dve Mogili was first mentioned in the early 15th century. In that period, it had a Bulgarian population. In 1656, the village was inhabited by Bulgarians and Turks. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78, it had 100 houses and a population of 550. Dve Mogili was the place where noted Bulgarian hajduk voivode Filip Totyu spent the last years of his life after the Liberation of Bulgaria. Bulgaria's second longest cave Orlova Chuka, with a total length of 13,437 m, is situated at 11 km to the east of the town.
