Peterborough Cathedral

Peterborough Cathedral, properly the Cathedral Church of St Peter, St Paul and St Andrew – also known as Saint Peters Cathedral in the United Kingdom – is the seat of the Bishop of Peterborough, dedicated to Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Andrew, whose statues look down from the three high gables of the famous West Front. Founded in the Anglo-Saxon period, the architecture is mainly Norman, following a rebuilding in the 12th century. With Durham and Ely Cathedrals, it is one of the most important 12th-century buildings in England to have remained largely intact, despite extensions and restoration. Peterborough Cathedral is known for its imposing Early English Gothic West Front which, with its three enormous arches, is without architectural precedent and with no direct successor. The appearance is slightly asymmetrical, as one of the two towers that rise from behind the façade was never completed, but this is only visible from a distance, while the effect of the West Front upon entering the Cathedral Close is overwhelming.

Thorpe Hall

Thorpe Hall at Longthorpe in the city of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, is a Grade I listed building, built by Peter Mills between 1653 and 1656, for the Lord Chief Justice, Oliver St John. The house is unusual in being one of the very few mansions built during the Commonwealth period. After a period as a hospital, it is currently used as a Sue Ryder Care hospice. While Parliamentary soldiers were in Peterborough in 1643 during the civil war, they ransacked the cathedral. Parliament disposed of Church property to raise money for the army and navy and the parliamentarian Oliver St John bought the lease to the manor of Longthorpe and built Thorpe Hall. In 1654 it was described by the author John Evelyn as "a stately place...built out of the ruins of the Bishops Palace and cloisters." A symmetrical composition in ashlar, rusticated quoins, with square, groups of rusticated chimney shafts; the north and south elevations are identical, three dormers, casements under pediments, the centre one semi-circular. A stone slate roof overhangs on modillions. There are seven windows, with plain stone surrounds to top and ground floors. The porch with Tuscan columns supports a balcony. The balcony window on the first floor has a segmental pediment and shouldered architrave. The windows of the second and sixth bays have pediments, while the others have frieze and moulded cornice. A band marks first floor height. There is a flight of eight steps with balustrade supporting two urns. The interior is complete, except for library panelling now at Leeds Castle. Principal rooms have richly decorated fireplaces and plaster ceilings by Peter Mills. The principal staircase has heavily carved foliated open panels to broad balustrade. A stone screen on the landing was added in 1850 by Francis Ruddle of Peterborough. Thorpe Hall is situated in a Grade II listed garden that is open to members of the public throughout the year. The curved walls forming the entrance courtyard, gatepiers and entrance gates, former stables to the right, and a shouldered stone architrave gateway flanked by vertically halved pilasters with volutes are also Grade I listed buildings. The late nineteenth century lodge, octagonal summerhouse in red brick with fish scale slate roof, and a free-standing archway resembling a Venetian window in design are Grade II listed buildings. A maternity hospital from 1943 to 1970, it was transferred to the National Health Service in 1948, coming under No. 12 Group of the East Anglian Regional Hospitals Board. In 1986 it was acquired by the Sue Ryder Foundation and is currently in use as a hospice. The charity is fund-raising to build a modern hospice alongside the original Thorpe Hall.

Bedford Purlieus National Nature Reserve

Bedford Purlieus is 211 hectares of ancient woodland in Cambridgeshire, in the United Kingdom. It is a national nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest owned and managed by the Forestry Commission. Situated in Thornhaugh civil parish, 10 km south of Stamford and 14 km west of Peterborough, the wood is within the Peterborough unitary authority area of Cambridgeshire, and borders Northamptonshire. In Roman times it was an iron smelting centre, during the medieval period it was in the Royal Forest of Rockingham, and later became part of the estates of the Duke of Bedford. Bedford Purlieus appears to have been continuously wooded at least from Roman times, and probably since the ice receded. The woodland may have the richest range of vascular plants of any English lowland wood. It acquired particular significance in the 1970s as an early subject for the historical approach to ecology and woodland management.

Castor Hanglands National Nature Reserve

Castor Hanglands is managed as a national nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England, a non-departmental public body vested in 2006. It is situated north of the villages of Castor and Ailsworth in the unitary authority area of Peterborough in the United Kingdom. In an area of less than 220 acres, Castor Hanglands contains a remarkable variety of plant and animal life. The reserve is a composite site where four distinct habitats — woodland, grassland, scrub and wetland — each of which has its own special wildlife, are made more valuable by their close proximity. Its history goes back over 2,000 years, the western boundary following King Street, a Roman road connecting Castor and Bourne. The woodland in Castor is mentioned in the Domesday Book and the name hangra is Old English for a wood on a hill.

Nene Park

Nene Park is a country park in the city of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire in the United Kingdom. Opened in 1978, it occupies a site approximately three and a half miles long, from slightly west of Castor to the centre of Peterborough. The Park has three lakes, one of which has a watersports centre which provides sailing, kayaking and windsurfing classes. Another lake has a pedaloe and rowing boat for hire shop, and the third lake contains moorings for boats and has access to the River Nene. Nene Park also has three childrens play areas, located in different points of the Park and a small miniature railway. The main entrance to the Park is served by the Nene Valley Railway station at Ferry Meadows, from which all the Parks main attractions can be accessed. The eastern end of the Park is also served by Orton Mere and Peterborough Nene Valley stations. The Park was conceived as part of the town’s 1968 expansion masterplan. Originally within the control of the Peterborough Development Corporation, the management of the Park was transferred to the Nene Park Trust, a company limited by guarantee with charitable status in 1988 under the auspices of the New Town Community Related Assets transfer arrangements. An endowment of properties provides sufficient income to cover running costs, along with that generated by the Parks tenancies and operations. The Nene Park Trust is tasked, "to provide for the recreation of the public by the provision of a park for the benefit of the inhabitants of Peterborough and visitors with the object of improving the conditions of life for such persons." The Park combines a balance of commercial attractions and informal and formal recreational pursuits appropriate to the quiet enjoyment of the countryside in addition to farmed land and nature areas. From a total of 2,535 acres within the Trusts management control, 658 acres are dedicated to Ferry Meadows country park, 259 acres for two 18 hole golf courses and 82 acres for organised recreation such as horse riding, rowing, watersports and trout fishing; the remaining 1,535 acres are in private ownership with managed pathways and informal areas. The landscape of the Park is varied, providing a range of natural habitats, informal areas and visitor attractions, including woodland, flood plain meadow and arable fields. In addition local schools make extensive use of the Park for educational field study, students also can gain hands on landscape management experience. Within this area there is also a visitor centre, public house, two hotels, sculpture collection, plant nursery and garden centre which add to the broad appeal of the Park and its inclusion in the life of the city. There is also a major steam railway run by enthusiasts that is some eight miles long.

Peterborough Lido

The Lido in the city of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire first opened in 1936 and is one of the few survivors of its type still in use in the United Kingdom. A striking building with elements of art deco design, the Lido and surrounding gardens cover an area of roughly two and a half acres, lying adjacent to the embankment of the River Nene, south of the city centre. The land on which the Lido is situated was purchased by the corporation from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in 1927. The main pool is 8 feet 10 inches deep or 2 feet 11 inches at the shallow end and holds 500,000 gallons of water. The site, which also includes two other heated outdoor pools, a large sunbathing lawn, balcony and refreshment area was designated a Grade II listed building in 1992. It is open to the public from late May to early September, closing during periods of inclement weather. Peterborough Sub-Aqua Club are official tenants of the Lido, renting some of the rooms beneath the clock tower.

St John the Baptist's Church

The Church of St John the Baptist, Barnack is a Church of England parish church in the village of Barnack, now in the City of Peterborough in the county of Cambridgeshire. Barnack was formerly part of the Soke of Peterborough, an historic area that was traditionally associated with Northamptonshire. Barnack is 3.5 miles south-east of Stamford in Lincolnshire. The church is a Grade I listed building. The church, dedicated to John the Baptist, is noted in particular for its Anglo-Saxon tower to which was added a spire of circa 1200, possibly one of the earliest spires in England. In the north aisle is a large Romanesque sculpture of a seated Christ in Majesty that was discovered under the floor in 1931. Estimates of the date of the Christ vary widely, from the latter part of the 10th century to circa 1200; the Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland settles on the late 12th century. Simon Jenkins gives the church four stars in his England's Thousand Best Churches and highlights as features the tower, the stiff-leaf font and the Christ in Majesty.

Serpentine Green

Serpentine Green is a shopping centre, opened February 8, 1999, located in the Hampton Hargate district of Southern Peterborough in England. The Tesco Extra hypermarket is very large, with a floorspace of 27,700 m² When it was built the Tesco outlet was a flagship branch the largest store in the UK larger stores have since been built however. The centre comprises 32 shop units including branches of WHSmith, Next, Outfit, HM, Boots as well as many branches of other national retailers. The centre also houses a food court and health centre/library in the Rotunda. A 2,100 space car park is provided for the large numbers of visitors the centre receives, especially in the run-up to Christmas. The centre is situated off the A15 road from the A1139, Fletton Parkway, that skirts the south of Peterborough and runs between the centre and the Orton district of the city to the North. On 5 May 2011, the centre saw the opening of a new Mothercare store.

Ferry Meadows railway station

Ferry Meadows is a station on the Nene Valley Railway between Wansford and Orton Mere. The current station has one platform, and has no car park of its own. In 2004, a new station building was added. Previously at Fletton Junction on the East Coast Main Line, the building was demolished, moved to Ferry Meadows and rebuilt brick-by-brick in its current location. In the Nene Park close by, there is a watersports centre as well as three children's play areas, three lakes and a miniature railway. The Park is open throughout the year, but most facilities such as the miniature railway and pedaloes only run from Easter to the end of October. Ferry Meadows station is on the site of the former Orton Waterville station. Ferry Meadows appears briefly in two James Bond films, GoldenEye and Octopussy.

Ufford

Ufford is a village and civil parish, now in the Peterborough unitary authority of the ceremonial county of Cambridgeshire, England. It was historically part of the Soke of Peterborough, which was associated with Northamptonshire but had its own County Council from 1888 until 1974. For electoral purposes it forms part of Barnack ward and is in the North West Cambridgeshire constituency. St Andrew's Church is a Grade I listed medieval building that has been closed and has now passed into the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Most of the church dates from the 14th century. It consists of a nave without a clerestory, aisles, and a chancel. There is also a west tower, and a rood turret near the junction of the nave and chancel, both of which are embattled. The church contains a series of 20th-century Arts and Crafts stained glass. Ufford Hall is also a Grade I listed building. It was built in 1734 by George Manners, a younger son of the Dukes of Rutland, and is now flats.
