Tepoztlán

Tepoztlán is a town in the Mexican state of Morelos. It is located at 18°59′07″N 99°05′59″W in the heart of the Tepoztlán Valley. The town serves as the seat of government for the municipality of the same name. The town had a population of 14,130 inhabitants, while the municipality reported 41,629 inhabitants in the 2010 national census. The town is a popular tourist destination near Mexico City. The town is famous for the remains of El Tepozteco temple built on top of the nearby Tepozteco Mountain, as well as for the exotic ice cream flavors prepared by the townspeople. Tepoztlán was named a "Pueblo Mágico" in 2002 but its title was removed in 2009 for not complying with the rules. In 2010 Tepoztlán fixed the problems it had and recovered the Pueblo Mágico title.

Temixco

Temixco is the fourth-largest city in the Mexican state of Morelos. It stands at 18°51′N 99°14′W in the west-northwest part of the state. The city serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality, with which it shares a name. The city had a 2005 census population of 89,915 persons, while the municipality reported 98,560 inhabitants. The municipality has an area of 87.869 km² . Temixco is 6 kilometres from Cuernavaca and 85 kilometres from Mexico City. In the 1940s the Comité Japonés de Ayuda Mutua a Japanese mutual aid organization based in Mexico City, obtained a hacienda on 200 hectares of land in Temixco from Alejandro Lacy so it could house newly-arriving Japanese coming from other parts of Mexico. The Japanese had moved in by 1943. A school for Japanese students was established in Temixco to serve those on the hacienda. Eventually Mexican parents began asking for their children to attend the Temixco Japanese school.

Cuernavaca Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary of Cuernavaca is the Roman Catholic cathedral church of the Diocese of Cuernavaca, located in the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico. The church and its surrounding monastery is one of the early 16th century monasteries in the vicinity of the Popocatepetl volcano, built initially for evangelization efforts of indigenous people after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. By the 18th century, the church of the monastery began to function as the parish church of the city and in the late 19th century, it was elevated to the rank of a cathedral. Unlike many cathedrals in Mexico, this one does not face the city’s main square, but rather is located just to the south, in its own walled compound, which it shares with a number of other structures. Unlike the other monastery structures from its time, the importance of this church provoked a number of renovation projects, the last of which occurred in 1957. This one took out the remaining older decorations of the interior and replaced them with simple modern ones. This renovation work also uncovered a 17th-century mural that covers 400 square metres of the interior walls and narrates the story of Philip of Jesus and twenty three other missionaries who were crucified in Japan.

Xochicalco

Xochicalco is a pre-Columbian archaeological site in Miacatlán Municipality in the western part of the Mexican state of Morelos. The name Xochicalco may be translated from Nahuatl as "in the house of Flowers". The site is located 38 km southwest of Cuernavaca, about 76 miles by road from Mexico City. The site is open to visitors all week, from 10 am to 5 pm, although access to the observatory is only allowed after noon. The apogee of Xochicalco came after the fall of Teotihuacan and it has been speculated that Xochicalco may have played a part in the fall of the Teotihuacan empire. The architecture and iconography of Xochicalco show affinities with Teotihuacan, the Maya area, and the Matlatzinca culture of the Toluca Valley. Today the residents of the nearby village of Cuentepec speak Nahuatl. The main ceremonial center is atop an artificially leveled hill, with remains of residential structures, mostly unexcavated, on long terraces covering the slopes. The site was first occupied by 200 BC, but did not develop into an urban center until the Epiclassic period . Nearly all the standing architecture at the site was built at this time. At its peak, the city may have had a population of up to 20,000 people.

Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca is the capital and largest city of the state of Morelos in Mexico. It was established by the Olmec, "the mother culture" of Mesoamerica, approximately 3200 years ago and is designated as the archaeological site of Gualupita I . The city is located south of Mexico City, from which it may be reached after a drive of approximately thirty minutes using the D-95 Freeway. Cuernavaca was designated Forest Protection Zone by President Lazaro Cardenas in the 1930s to protect the aquifers, the vegetation and the quality of life of residents both in Mexico City and locally. The city was nicknamed the "City of Eternal Spring" by Alexander von Humboldt in the nineteenth century. It has long been a favorite escape for Mexico City and foreign visitors because of this warm, stable climate and abundant vegetation. Aztec emperors had summer residences there, and today many famous people as well as Mexico City residents maintain homes there. Considering its location of just a 1½-hour drive from Mexico City, Cuernavaca traditionally has been a center of Mexican society and glamour, with many of the countrys wealthy citizens owning sprawling mansions and haciendas in this cultural haven. Cuernavaca is also host to a large foreign resident population, including large numbers of students who come to study the Spanish language. The name "Cuernavaca" is derived from the Nahuatl phrase "Cuauhnāhuac" and means "surrounded by or close to trees". The name eventually was Hispanicized to Cuernavaca. The coat-of-arms of the municipality is based on the pre-Columbian pictograph emblem of the city which depicts a tree trunk with three branches, with foliage, and four roots colored red. There is a cut in the trunk in the form of a mouth, from which emerges a speech scroll, probably representing the language Nahuatl and by extension the locative suffix "-nāhuac", meaning "near".

Coatetelco

Coatetelco or Cuatetelco, is a prehispanic archaeological site located next to the Coatetelco Lagoon, two kilometers from Alpuyeca, in the Miacatlán municipality, Morelos State, México, near Xochicalco, had an important development between 500 y 150 BCE.

Palace of Cortés

The Palace of Cortés in Cuernavaca, Mexico, is, at almost 500 years old, the oldest conserved colonial era civil structure in the continental Americas. The building began as a fortified residence for Hernán Cortés and his second wife Juana Zúñiga. It was built in 1526, over a Tlahuica/Aztec tribute collection center, which was destroyed by the Spanish during the Conquest. Cortés replaced it with a personal residence to assert authority over the newly conquered peoples. As Cortés’ residence, it reached its height in the 1530s, but the family eventually abandoned it. In the 18th century, colonial authorities had the structure renovated and used it as a barracks and jail. During the Mexican War of Independence, it held prisoners such as José María Morelos y Pavón. After the war, it became the seat of government for the state of Morelos until the late 20th century, when the state government moved out and the structure was renovated and converted into the current Museo Regional Cuauhnahuac, or regional museum, with exhibits on the history of Morelos.

Hacienda Cocoyoc

The Hacienda de Cocoyoc, now known as the Hotel Hacienda Cocoyoc, is a private hacienda resort located in the state of Morelos, México. In the 17th and 18th centuries it became one of the most important haciendas in the nation and has been declared a Historical Monument by the INAH.

El Tepozteco

El Tepozteco is an archaeological site in the Mexican state of Morelos. It consists of a small temple to the Aztec god Tepoztecatl, a god of the alcoholic pulque beverage. In the middle Postclassic Period, various terraces and a small pyramid were built on one of the peaks of the Sierra de Tepoztlan, overlooking the pre-Columbian town of Tepoztlan. The temple became important enough to attract pilgrims from as far away as Guatemala, although the cult of Tepoztecatl was local to this site.

Sierra de Tepoztlan

Sierra de Tepoztlan or Tepozteco Mountain is located near the village of Tepoztlán, a Pueblo Mágico, in Morelos, Mexico. The mountain range, "vulnerable to landslides, erosions, and flooding", contains only small areas of land which are appropriate for cultivation. Characterized as having "energies", it contains the ruins of a small, pre-Hispanic, Ometochtli temple, known as El Tepozteco. It is believed that there were a number of settlements at one time at the mountain base.

Estadio Agustín "Coruco" Díaz

Estadio Agustín "Coruco" Díaz is a football stadium named in honour of a local player named Agustín "Coruco" Díaz. It has a capacity of 22,996 seats and is home to the team Cañeros de Zacatepec. This stadium is one of the oldest in Mexico and its origins can be traced back to 1948. It is located in Zacatepec, Morelos. The official opening of this stadium was in November 1954. This stadium is nicknamed the Selva Cañera because of the tropical weather that distinguish the municipality of Zacatepec. There was a very famous player and later coach named Ignacio Trelles, who ordered to irrigate the field one hour before the soccer match, leading to a very strong vaporization and an increase of the temperature to near 40 Celsius (more or less 100 Fahrenheit), that was very hard for the visitor squads. Another oddity of this building is that is it located very central in the town of Zacatepec and beside the sugar cane refineries.

Tlayacapan

Tlayacapan is a town and a municipality located in the northeast part of Morelos state in central Mexico. It is located 60 km east from the state capital of Cuernavaca and about 1.5 hours south of Mexico City. It is a rural area, whose way of life has not changed much over the 20th century, with 90% of its population still partially or fully dependent on agriculture. The town has old mansions, houses with red tile roofs and streets paved with stones. Many ravines crisscross the area and are crossed by numerous stone bridges. The main landmark is the former monastery of San Juan Bautista, which towers over all the other structures. It was built beginning the 1530s, along with 26 chapels scattered around the original town as part of the “spiritual conquest” of the area. Today, this monastery is part of the Monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl, which was made a World Heritage Site in 1994. Culturally, the town is famous for two things: being the origin of the Chinelos dance and the home of the Banda Tlayacapan band, the most important culturally in the state and nationally recognized. Tlayacapan was also a popular filming location for many Mexican and American films such as La Valentina, starring María Félix and Eulalio González, and Two Mules for Sister Sara, starring Shirley MacLaine and Clint Eastwood. American rock band The Killers, filmed the music video of their hit song When You Were Young, in 2006.

Yecapixtla is a town and municipality located in the northeast of the state of Morelos in central Mexico. The town is home to one of the monastery complexes associated with the Monasteries on the Slopes of Popocatépetl World Heritage Site. Chalcatzingo

Chalcatzingo is a Mesoamerican archaeological site in the Valley of Morelos dating from the Formative Period of Mesoamerican chronology. The site is well known for its extensive array of Olmec-style monumental art and iconography. Located in the southern portion of the Central Highlands of Mexico, Chalcatzingo is estimated to have been settled as early as 1500 BCE. The inhabitants began to produce and display Olmec-style art and architecture around 900 BCE. At its height between 700 BCE and 500 BCE, Chalcatzingo's population is estimated at between five hundred and a thousand individuals. By 500 BCE it had gone into decline. The Chalcatzingo center covers roughly 100 acres . It was well-situated in a fertile plain, at the base of two tall hills, Cerro Chalcatzingo and Cerro Delgado. Cerro Chalcatzingo has evidence of long regard and use as a site of ritual significance. The climate in Morelos is generally warmer and more humid than the rest of the Highlands. A spring rising at the base of the hills provided a source of drinking water for the population. Chalcatzingo connected trade routes between Guerrero, the Valley of Mexico, Oaxaca, and the Gulf Lowlands.

Estadio Nido del Colibri is a multi-use stadium in Cuernavaca, Mexico. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home stadium of Colibríes de Morelos. The stadium holds 25,000 people and opened in 2003.

Oaxtepec

Oaxtepec is a town within the municipality of Yautepec in the northern part of the Mexican state of Morelos. Its main industry is tourism, mostly aimed at the inhabitants of nearby Mexico City, and the town possesses various aquatic resorts and hotels. The climate is tropical and the countryside very lush. It has 78,000 inhabitants. During the XIX Olympiad in 1968, Oaxtepec was the venue and staging area for the World Youth Camp component of the Cultural Olympiad. Not every Olympic country sent delegates, but participants from the Bahamas, Belgium, Chile, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Guyana, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Norway, the United States, the United Kingdom and a dozen other nations filled a resort operated the rest of the time for Mexican government officials and their families. Evan Wilson, 28, of Baltimore, was the USA delegations Chief of Mission and while at Oaxtepec signed the so-called Oaxtepec Declaration, which he also negotiated, on behalf of the United States. The Oaxtepec Declaration called for expanded participation by world youth in sport, dialog, and encampments aimed at building international peace, friendship, and understanding.

Ciudad Ayala

Ciudad Ayala is a city in the east-central part of the Mexican state of Morelos. It stands at 18°46′N 98°59′W, at a mean height of 1220 metres above sea level. Although it had a 2005 census population of only 6,190 inhabitants, the city serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of Ayala. The municipality reported 70,023 inhabitants and has an areal extent of 345.688 km² and includes such smaller towns as San Pedro Apatlaco, Anenecuilco, and Tenextepango, which are all larger than Ciudad Ayala. It was previously known as San Francisco Mapachtlan. The town of Anenecuilco, birthplace of Emiliano Zapata, is in this municipality; so is the Hacienda de San Juan, near the town of Chinameca, where he was betrayed and assassinated. Ayala itself is mostly known for giving the name to Emiliano Zapatas manifesto: the Plan of Ayala.

Huitzilac is a city in the Mexican state of Morelos. It stands at 19°01′42″N 99°16′02″W and at an altitude of 2,561 m. above sea level. The city serves as the municipal seat for the surrounding municipality of the same name. With a 2010 census population of 4,568 inhabitants, it is the second-largest city in the municipality, after the town of Tres Marías 19°03′15″N 99°14′30″W. The municipality reported 17,340 inhabitants in the 2010 census. The name is a Spanish-language adaptation of a Nahuatl toponym meaning "in the water of the humming-birds".

Tlalnepantla

Xochitepec

Xochitepec is a municipio of the state of Morelos, in central Mexico. Xochitepec is also the name of its principal township and seat of the municipal government. It is located approximately 13 km to the south of the capital of Morelos, Cuernavaca, on the southern outskirts of that citys greater metropolitan area. The municipality reported 45,643 inhabitants in the year 2000 census. The toponym Xochitepec comes from the Nahuatl language, meaning "on the hill of flowers". In June 2006 a research team from Mexicos National Institute of Anthropology and History began excavations at Zazacatla, a pre-Columbian Mesoamerican archaeological site located within the municipal boundaries. The INAH team led by Giselle Canto reported finding evidence of Olmec cultural influences at the site. Prior to the find Olmec-influenced statuary and architecture had been almost completely unknown for other sites in the western Morelos region, and Zazacatlas excavation represents the strongest evidence yet for some form of trade or contact between the area and the "Olmec heartland" in the Gulf Coast region, some 400 km to the east. In January 2007 the governor of Morelos, Marco Adame Castillo, announced an offer for the state to underwrite the preservation of Zazacatla and to incorporate it into the tourism and cultural heritage plans for Morelos. He foreshadowed that a tourism project would be initiated at the sites location in Xochitepec once the archaeological investigations had further developed.
