Penrhyn Quarry

The Penrhyn Slate Quarry is a slate quarry located near Bethesda in north Wales. At the end of the nineteenth century it was the world's largest slate quarry; the main pit is nearly 1 mile long and 1,200 feet deep, and it was worked by nearly 3,000 quarrymen. It has since been superseded in size by slate quarries in China, Spain and the USA. Penrhyn is still Britain's largest slate quarry but its workforce is now nearer 200. The quarry was first developed in the 1770s by Richard Pennant, later Baron Penrhyn although it is likely that small-scale slate extraction on the site began considerably earlier. Much of this early working was for domestic use only as no large scale transport infrastructure was developed until Pennant's involvement. From then on, slates from the quarry were transported to the sea at Port Penrhyn on the narrow gauge Penrhyn Quarry Railway built in 1798, one of the earliest railway lines. In the 19th century the Penrhyn Quarry, along with the Dinorwic Quarry, dominated the Welsh slate industry. The quarry holds a significant place in the history of the British Labour Movement as the site of two prolonged strikes by workers demanding better pay and safer conditions. The first strike lasted eleven months in 1896. The second began on 22 November 1900 and lasted for three years. Known as "The Great Strike of Penrhyn" this was the longest dispute in British industrial history. In the longer term the dispute cast the shadow of unreliability on the North Welsh slate industry, causing orders to drop sharply and thousands of workers to be laid off. From 1964 until 2007 it was owned and operated by Alfred McAlpine PLC. In 2007 it was purchased by Kevin Lagan and renamed Welsh Slate Ltd. Kevin Lagan and his son Peter are now directors of Welsh Slate Ltd which also includes the Oakeley quarry in Blaenau Ffestiniog, the Cwt Y Bugail quarry and the Pen Yr Orsedd quarry.

Nantporth

Nantporth is a football stadium on Holyhead Road in Bangor, Wales. Bangor City F.C. moved from their previous ground, Farrar Road, that opened in the 20s but changed to Nantporth during January 2012. Previously the ground was used occasionally by Bangor University football and rugby clubs, as well as practical lectures by the University's 'Normal Site' campus, which is home to the Sports Science and Education faculties. The main pitch overlooks the Menai Strait, with stunning views in both directions along the coast. Building work started on the new stadium in August 2011, and was completed in January 2012. Click Here to see photos of the ongoing development. The stadium was built by developer Watkin Jones as part of a joint project with Morbaine Ltd. Both companies formed a further company "Deiniol Developments" for the purpose of the Nantporth construction and the development of the football clubs former home at Farrar Road into an ASDA supermarket. The work was undertaken on behalf of Bangor City Council the site owners. Under this agreement the developers installed 805 seats in the main stand. The club have installed a further approx. 300 seats in the Menai Stand on the opposite side of the pitch. A Planning application HERE has been submitted for further seating to be installed. Should Bangor City qualify for European football at the end of the 2011/12 season they will be able to play some of their home games at Nantporth after the FAW applied for a 1-year dispensation for clubs with a 1000+ seater stadium. Bangor City hope to take the overall seating to over 1500 in time for Bangor to play any European matches there at the end of the 2012/13 season should they qualify. A previous planning application has already approved the installation of a full-size astro-turf training pitch on the same site.
