Pegli is a neighbourhood in the west of Genoa, Italy. With a mild climate and a sea promenade, Pegli is mainly a residential area with four public parks and several villas and mansions. Palazzo Rosso

Palazzo Rosso is a historical palace of Genoa, northern Italy. Situated in Via Garibaldi, it is one of the most important picture galleries of the city, along with the galleries of Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi. Palazzo Rosso was designed by the architect Pietro Antonio Corradi and was built between 1671 and 1677. The Brignole Sale family owned the palace until 1874, when Maria Brignole Sale, duchess of Galliera, bequeathed it to the city of Genoa, in order to "increase its artistic splendor and practical resources". The palace then became municipal property and it was destined to become a public gallery.

Palazzi dei Rolli

The Palazzi dei Rolli is a group of palaces in Genoa, northern Italy. On July 13, 2006, forty-two of eighty subscribers to Palazzi dei Rolli or rolls palaces were entered by the special committee UNESCO meeting in Vilnius between the members. About 10 million euro was spent on their restoration in the 1990s with the use of public and private capital. On January 20, 2007, a plaque was placed by UNESCO at the beginning of Via Garibaldi on the grounds that it inserts the description of Palazzi dei Rolli within the world heritage listing: The largest homes, various in shape and distribution, that were chosen at random in the lists to host visits of state. The buildings, often built on sloping land, formed of a stepped atrium courtyard staircase garden and rich interior decorations, express a singular social and economic identity and commencement of modern age urban architecture in Europe.

Via Garibaldi

Via Garibaldi is street of the historical centre of Genoa, northern Italy, well known for its ancient palaces. The street dates back to the year 1550. Originally named as Strada Maggiore, then Strada Nuova, only in 1882 its name was dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi. The street is 250 metres long and 7.5 metres wide. Since July 2006 Via Garibaldi is inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli and Strade Nuove del Centro Storico of Genoa.

Sant'Anna funicular

The Sant'Anna funicular is a funicular railway in the Italian city of Genoa connecting the Piazza Portello, on the edge of the historic city centre, to the Corso Magenta. The line is one of two true funiculars in the city, the second being the Zecca–Righi funicular, although the Principe–Granarolo rack railway is sometimes erroneously described as a third funicular.

Palazzo San Giorgio

The Palazzo San Giorgio or Palace of St. George is a palace in Genoa, Italy. It is situated in the Piazza Caricamento. The palace was built in 1260 by Guglielmo Boccanegra, uncle of Simone Boccanegra, the first Doge of Genoa. For the construction of the new palace, materials were used from the demolition of the Venetian embassy in Constantinople, having been obtained from Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII as a reward for Genoese aid against the Latin Empire. Stone lions, the emblem of Venices patron St Mark were displayed as trophies on the facade by her bitter rival, the Republic of Genoa. The palace was intended — through the creation of a civil-political center — to separate and elevate the temporal power of the Republics government from the religious power of the clergy, centered on the Cathedral of San Lorenzo. In 1262, Guglielmo Boccanegra was deposed and forced into exile. The palace was used for a time as a prison; Marco Polo was its most famous resident and it was there that he dictated his memoirs to Rustichello of Pisa. In the 15th century, the palace became home to the Bank of Saint George.

It is run by AMT Genova.

Quezzi funicular

The Quezzi elevator (Italian: Ascensore inclinato di Quezzi) is a public incline elevator with variable slope at Quezzi, in the northern suburbs of the Italian city of Genoa. The line opened in May 2015, and connects a lower terminus at the Via Pinetti to the Via Fontanarossa via an intermediate stop at Portazza. The plant is one of the public people movers in the city, including several elevators and funiculars, the older and best known of which are the Zecca–Righi funicular, the Sant'Anna funicular and the Principe–Granarolo rack railway; the last one is often erroneously described as a funicular.

The Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art in Genoa is an important collection of Asian art, one of the most significative collections in Europe and in Italy, along with the museums of Venice and Rome. The museum hosts the huge collection of Edoardo Chiossone, who spent 23 years in Japan. The exhibition shows many objects and artworks from Japan and China, like sculptures, porcelain pieces, bronze vessels, prints, masks, Samurai armors and helmets. It is situated inside Villetta Di Negro, a public park in the centre of Genoa, next to Piazza Corvetto and overlooking the historical centre and Via Garibaldi.

Palazzo Bianco

It contains the Gallery of the White Palace, one of the greater city art galleries, and together with those of its neighbors Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Doria Tursi, it forms part of a cluster of museums at that end of the street.

Giardino botanico Clelia Durazzo Grimaldi

The Giardino botanico Clelia Durazzo Grimaldi is a small botanical garden located on the grounds of the Villa Durazzo-Pallavicini in Pegli, a suburb of Genoa, Italy. It is a part of the romantic historical park made by Ignazio Pallavicini in 1846. The garden was established in 1794 by Clelia Durazzo Grimaldi, and donated to the city in 1928. Today is restored and it contains around twenty groups of plants laid on the ground by an educational disposition: Carnivorous plants Succulent plants Tropical plants and orchids Palms Ferns Camellias Roses Bamboo Aquatic plants Mediterranean plants Scented plants Useful plants The garden contains a lot of species, some of these rare or unusual.

Teatro Carlo Felice

The Teatro Carlo Felice is the principal opera house of Genoa, Italy, used for performances of opera, ballet, orchestral music, and recitals. It is located on the Piazza De Ferrari. The hall is named for Duke Carlo Felice, and dates from December 24, 1824, when the Most Excellent Department of Theatres was established. On January 31, 1825, local architect Carlo Barabino submitted his design for the opera house which was to be built on the site of the church of San Domenico. The Dominican monks were moved elsewhere without delay or ceremony, and the first stone of the new building was laid on 19 March 1826. The inaugural performance of Bellinis Bianca e Fernando took place on April 7, 1828, even though the structure and decoration were not quite finished. The auditorium accommodated an audience of about 2,500 in five tiers, a gallery above, and standing room in the orchestra pit. The acoustics were considered among the best of the time. For nearly forty years from 1853, Verdi spent the winter in Genoa, but he had few strong professional ties with the Teatro Carlo Felice. In 1892, Genoa commemorated the 400th anniversary of Columbus discovery of America and to celebrate the occasion the Carlo Felice was renovated and redecorated at a cost of 420,000 lire . Verdi was approached to compose a suitable opera, but he declined the honour, making the excuse that he was too old. Alberto Franchettis opera Cristoforo Colombo premiered at the Carlo Felice on 6 October 1892. The hall was altered many times in the years 1859-1934, and remained remarkably unscathed by war until 9 February, 1941 when a shell fired by a British warship hit the roof, leaving a large hole open to the sky and destroying the ceiling of the auditorium which had been a unique example of 19th century rococo extravagance, its main feature being a wide circle of angels, cherubs and other winged creatures in brightly painted high relief. Further damage was sustained on 5 August 1943 when incendiary bombs started a backstage fire which destroyed all scenery and wooden fittings, but did not reach the main auditorium. Unfortunately additional damage was caused by looters who stripped the back of the theatre of every possible scrap of metal they could find. Finally, an air raid in September 1944 caused the destruction of the front of the theatre leaving virtually only the outside walls and the corridors behind the tiers of boxes standing. What had been the most richly beautiful of opera houses had become a skeleton of bare walls and roofless porticos. Reconstruction plans began immediately after the wars close. The first design by Paolo Antonio Chessa was rejected; the second by Carlo Scarpa was approved in 1977 but brought to a halt by his untimely death. Aldo Rossi ultimately provided todays design, in which portions of the original facade have been recreated but the interior is entirely modern. The hall officially reopened in June 1991, with a main hall holding up to 2,000 seats and a smaller auditorium holding up to 200 seats.

Archaeological Museum of Savona

The Archaeological Museum of Savona (Museo storico archeologico di Savona) is located in Palazzo della Loggia inside the Priamar Fortress. It presents the history of the Priamar promontory and the town of Savona. On the exposition are old collections of objects from around the Mediterranean and artifacts from the 20th century excavations of the fortress and its surrounding (especially ceramic products of the region). The museum has two floors and inside it is possible to see original excavation pits.

Corso Italia is the main promenade of Genoa, Italy. It's one of the main roads of the neighbourhood of Albaro, east of the city centre. About 2.5 kilometres long, the promenade connects the quartieri Foce and Boccadasse.

Nostra Signora della Consolazione e San Vincenzo martire

The church of the Madonna della Consolazione e San Vicenzo Martire also called Chiesa di Nostra Signora della Consolazione is a church in Genoa, Italy. A church of ‘’Our Lady of the Consolation’’ under the care of Augustinian Fathers was known near this site since the 15th century. At the time, it stood in the perilous neighborhoods outside the city walls. Construction of new defensive walls after the bombardment in 1684, forced the Augustinian monks to relocate, and they were authorized to build at the present site. Construction ran from 1684 till 1706. The dome was added in 1769 based on designs by Simone Cantoni. The adjacent monastery, never completed, became in the 19th century the site of a marketplace called the Mercato Orientale. In 1810, under Napoleonic rule, the Augustinians were dispossessed of the church, and by 1813, it became a parish church. The interior frescoes date to after 1875. Inside the first altar to the right has a canvas depicting St Thomas of Villanova distributing his wealth to the poor by Domenico Fiasella. The virgin statue on the façade was moved here from the prior church. The organ was built by Giacomo Locatelli in 1880 and restored in 1975.

Santi Cosma e Damiano

The church of Santi Cosma e Damiano is located in central Genoa, Italy. Located at the site of an ancient oratory dedicated to the martyrs St. Cosma and Damian. The skull and tibia of the latter are presumably among the relics in the church. They were the patron saints of barbers and doctors. The first documents about the church date to 1049. In 1684, the church roof was damaged by the naval bombardment of the city. It was also damage in World War II. It contains a painting of Esther and Assuerus by Bernardo Castello and a Madonna and child with St Cosma and Damian by Gioacchino Assereto.

San Donato

San Donato is a church in Genoa, Northern Italy. It dates from the 12th century and is in Romanesque style. It became a parish under archbishop Siro il Porcello, and was consecrated on May 1, 1189. After the bombardment of 1684 it was restored several times, being again consecrated on December 4, 1892. Other restorations in 1946-1951 have kept its Romanesque appearance. The interior contains a Madonna by the 14th-century painter Nicolò da Voltri; a St Joseph, by Domenico Piola; and a marble relief of the Baptism of Christ, started by Ignazio Peschiera and completed by his pupil Carlo Rubatto. There is also a tryptich by Joos van Cleve representing The Adoration of the Magi; the person who commissioned the work Stefano Raggi with Guardian Saint ; and a Mary Magdalen. This is topped by a Crucifixion scene with Mary and St John the Evangelist.

San Filippo Neri

San Filippo Neri is a Baroque church on via Lomellini in central Genoa. The order of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri had arrived in Genoa in 1643, under the sponsorship of the Oratorian and Marchese Camillo Pallavicini who was born in Genoa. Originally housed in the church of San Pancrazio, by 1674 the order began a move to this new site and built their church and chapter house on the site of a former palace of the Lomellino family. The nearby building on via Brignole De Ferrari houses the chapter house for the Oratory of Philip Neri. Designed by the architect Giovanni Battista Montaldo, it was built during the same period as the church. It is not clear who designed the church.

Oratory of San Giacomo della Marina

The Oratorio di San Giacomo della Marina is a small chapel or prayer-house at the dockside in Genoa, northern Italy. Erected in 1453, the oratory was rebuilt and decorated in the 17th century. Twelve large canvasses illustrating the saint and patron of the battle against the Moors, Saint James, were completed by major Genoese Baroque artists including: Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione St. James defeats the Moors Giovanni Battista Carlone St. James Opens the Gates of Coimbra to King Ferdinand and Martyrdom of St. James Valerio Castello Saint Peter Baptizes St. James Giovanni Domenico Cappellino St. James Preaching Domenico Piola Martyrdom of the Saint Giovanni Lorenzo Bertolotto The Invention of the Spoglia Aurelio Lomi Sons of Zebedee with Jesus The exterior of the oratory is unadorned. The confraternity was active in religious processions during past centuries.

Santa Maria di Castello

Santa Maria di Castello is a church and religious complex in Genoa, Italy. Administrated by the Dominicans, it is located in the Castello hill of the city, where a Roman castrum existed. The church is flanked by the large Tower of the Embriaci. The church, in Romanesque style, was erected before 900 AD. It houses numerous artworks commissioned by the main noble families of Genoa, by artists such as Francesco Maria Schiaffino, Lorenzo Fasolo, Alessandro Gherardini, Giuseppe Palmieri, Francesco Boccaccino, Pier Francesco Sacchi, Bernardo Castello, Aurelio Lomi and Tommaso Orsolino. Notable are the frescoes with Stories of David and the painted majolicas from the 16th century Genoese school. The high altar is decorated by a marble group of the "Assumption" by Domenico Parodi while the chapel to the left of the presbytery has a Santa Rosa da Lima by Domenico Piola and a marble cover by Taddeo Carlone. The fourth chapel in the left aisle has a Madonna del Rosario by the workshop of Anton Maria Maragliano, while the first chapel has a painting attributed to Giovanni Battista Paggi . The baptistery has a polyptych from Lombard masters of the 15th century. The main portal is in Tuscan style and is surmounted by a Gothic lunette of the 14th century with a "Crucifixion". The loggia facing the second cloister has frescoes of Saints, a Madonna and, on the first floor, an Annunciation by Giusto d'Alemagna from 1451. In the upper floor has a statue of "St. Catherina of Alexandria" and a marble tabernacle attributed to Domenico Gagini .

Santissimo Nome di Maria e degli Angeli Custodi

The church of the Santissimo Nome di Maria e degli Angeli Custodi, commonly known as the Church of the Scuole Pie, is a church in central Genoa, located a few metres away from the Cathedral of Genoa. The church was built on property belonging to the community of Piarist or Scolopi fathers . Francesco Maria Schiaffino designed nine relief sculptures present in the church, and died before they were all completed by his studio. The three representing the Nativity, Mary at the Temple, and Young Jesus among the Scholars, while the Marriage of Mary, the Annunciation, the Visitation of Anne, the Assumption of the Virgin, the Descent of the Holy Spirit, and Flight to Egypt were by pupils, including this last once completed by a young Nicolò Traverso). The statue of Mary at the main altar was completed by Tommaso Orsolino, while a painting of the Guardian Angel was completed by Giovanni Paolo Oderico.

Santi Quirico e Giulitta

The church Santi Quirico e Giulitta is a church in the Genovese quarter of San Quirico, located on val Polcevera. A church at the site is first recorded by 1143. It underwent a number of reconstructions and enlargements. By the 1840s, the church nearly lay in ruins, with the roof caving in. Construction of the present Neoclassic structure and façade began in 1849; it represents the designs of the architect Angelo Scaniglia, and was consecrated in 1851. The interior frescos mainly reflect Michele Cesare Danielli who died at the young age of 32 in 1853. It is ornamented by the paintings of Giovanni Mola. Further decoration was by Camillo Torsegno in 1870. The wooden statues of the titular saints at the altar, were produced by Giuseppe Rungaldier. Among the remnants of the older temple, is a small tempietto made of marble on the main altar. It also contains canvases of St Clair in adoration of the Holy Sacrament by Giovanni Andrea Carlone, St Felice Bishop celebrates Mass by Giovanni Andrea de Ferrari, Extasis of St. Theresa of Avila by Domenico Piola e St Ursula and the Virgins and the Holy Family by Domenico Fiasella.

San Torpete

San Torpete is a church in central Genoa, northern Italy, dedicated to Saint Torpes. It was founded in the 11th century by local merchants. It was rebuilt in 1730 under designs conceived by Giovanni Antonio Ricca. The interior ceiling is decorated with paintings and stucco by Giovanni Bernardo Carlone depicting scenes of the Life of San Torpete. An altarpiece of Madonna with St Thomas Becket of Canterbury, St Lucia and John the Baptist is attributed to the studio of Luca Cambiaso or Andrea Semini. The small statue of the Virgin of Providence at the main altar was completed by Giovanni Battista Drago. The altar of San Filippo Neri has a painting depicting The Saint in ecstasy attributed to the studio of Giovanni Battista Paggi.

Santa Maria delle Vigne

Santa Maria delle Vigne is a Roman Catholic basilica church in Genoa, northern Italy. It is known from the 10th century. The main altar was completed in 1730 by Giacomo Antonio Ponsonelli. The church is also the final resting place of the leading early Italian composer Alessandro Stradella, who was murdered in 1682.

Basilica di Nostra Signora Assunta

Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption (Italian: Basilica di Nostra Signora Assunta is a Roman Catholic church in the town of Genoa, in the Province of Genoa and the region of Liguria, Italy. This church was constructed during 1610–1624. The Baroque-style facade was added in 1932, design of the architect Piero de Barbieri; the sculptor Luigi Venzano contributed the facade statues of St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph, while the central relief depicts the Madonna. The interior was decorated across the centuries and includes works by Giulio Benso, Domenico Piola, Nicolò Barabino, and Gian Stefano Rossi. It should not be confused with the distinct Santa Maria Assunta also called Santa Maria di Carignano.
